OVERVIEW

This course is aimed at students with a strong interest in financial trading in integrated financial markets. It addresses the needs of students who are looking to pursue a career in global financial trading and related fields, such as financial analysis.

You will focus on trading and the behaviour of global financial markets through the use of an on-campus simulated Trading Floor, which provides practical exposure and hands-on experience in the art of trading. This course explores the principles of equity trading and evaluation, bond trading and financial derivatives. In addition, you will gain career-ready business skills sought after by employers, including teamwork, communication, presentation and leadership skills.

By successfully completing this course you will not only gain a master's qualification, but also be prepared for the Financial Information Associate Certificate, which is recognised by the world’s leading financial information companies. What you will study

To provide an understanding and application of the tools required to operate as a financial trader, you will initially study modules in Risk and Portfolio Analysis,Technical Analysis and Fundamental Analysis. During this period you will begin to develop expertise in accessing and analysing data using Thomson Reuters Eikon financial database.

Modules focusing on the Psychology of Trading and Financial Services Compliance and Ethics, will also enable you to study and research the issues of psychology, regulation and ethics applicable to the role of a trader. These modules will be studied at our Cardiff Campus.

All students will then undertake a two month Practical Financial Trading module delivered on-site in Swansea by leading global trading company, OSTC .

The final stage of the course will be spent either completing a three month work-based learning internship at an OSTC trading floor or a written dissertation.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

The MSc Trading and Risk prepares you for a career in financial trading. Such a career requires technical skills and expertise which the course delivers, but also mental skills for which the Psychology of Trading prepares you. The appreciation of financial trading which you will have by the end of the course will also make you attractive to employers for back-office roles related to financial trading.

Assessment methods

A variety of assessment methods are used. Students are assessed on their ability to trade in a simulated environment and on their own reflection on their experience of that simulated trading. Analysis techniques are assessed through a combination of in-class tests and extended case studies. The MSc Computational Trading programme allows students to bridge the gap between financial theory and work experience.

Our partnership with City-based Amplify Trading will enable you to gain hands-on experience of stock market analysis on a live trading platform. Amplify provides financial software used within the development programmes of leading investment banks including Bank of America, HSBC, Citigroup, Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank. By the end of the programme you will be capable of trading effectively in equity, bond, commodity and foreign exchange markets and you will be ready to take up a role within leading institutions in the financial and commodity trading sector.

We focus on real time approaches to trading, including features of specific financial tools and the interaction of macroeconomic, financial, technical and behavioural drivers in financial markets. Our highly interactive teaching techniques include the use of Eviews Econometrics software, R programming language and specialised trading platform. You will engage with theoretical, applied and practical (hands on) learning.

We benefit from our close proximity to one of the world's largest financial centres, Canary Wharf, which lies just across the river. We work closely with the financial and professional services companies that are based there. Industry guest lecturers have included BBC, Bank of England, Barclays, Deutsche Bank, PricewaterhouseCoopers and many more.

The course combines a thorough grounding in business and finance theory with practical, real-world training and experience provided by OSTC.

OCTC has changed the traditional concept of locating proprietary traders in London and Chicago. OSTC delivers a professional environment for talented traders, providing an opportunity to actively participate in global financial markets. They currently have 16 offices in some of the world’s key cities and opened OSTC Wales in 2009.

Course Overview

The first phase of study is the Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert), which is campus-based and will prepare you for work in trading and financial markets. It is designed to enable you to gain a thorough understanding of the sector in preparation for work experience. Upon successful completion of the PG Cert, you will have an opportunity, if you wish, to apply to study the Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip).

The PGDip primarily consists of a work placement with OSTC. Applicants will be required to undertake an interview with representatives of the university and OSTC. If successful, you will have the opportunity to undertake in-depth training on industryspecific simulators which will prepare you for work as a financial derivatives trader. Throughout this phase you will be required to keep a learning log of your training activities and to submit a written assignment reflecting on your practice at the end of the placement. Upon successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma you may have the opportunity to go directly into employment as a trader with OSTC, subject to their selection procedures. You will also have the opportunity to continue your study to Master’s Level by completing a 60-credit dissertation.

You will study the following four units and complete your studies with a dissertation:

Financial Econometrics:

Econometrics is a core tool used in the study of finance. This unit gives you a strong practical understanding of the econometric tools you will be using throughout your study of finance. The teaching philosophy of this unit is to take an applied approach, to provide you with a strong intuitive understanding of a range of econometric techniques and their applications to a wide variety of problem-solving situations in finance. You will gain extensive experience with econometric and statistical packages such as Eviews and SPSS. Your work in this unit is supported by lectures, tutorials and workshops. Many of the econometric techniques covered in this unit are used and applied in other units in the course, to help you gain a good understanding of how to apply them successfully to the theory and practice of financial management.

Multinational Corporate Financial Management:

In this unit you will study international finance from the corporate perspective. The first half of the unit focuses on the primary financial decisions of the firm, working capital management, advanced capital budgeting techniques, the strategic analysis of capital investment decisions, capital structure theories, and the financing and dividend decisions. Corporate financial management in a multinational context introduces many new problems, challenges and opportunities. In the second half of the unit the focus will be on corporate financial management from the global and international perspective. Topics you will study include the measurement and management of currency and interest rate risks, taxation, regulatory and political risks, mergers and acquisitions, and the international capital investment, financing and dividend decisions.

International Money and Capital Markets:

This unit covers international finance from the securities and markets perspective, and complements the unit on Multinational Corporate Financial Management. You will study the currency and Eurocurrency markets, the international equity, fixed income and derivatives markets, financial institutions, financial regulation, and the models used to price the financial securities trading in these markets. The topics in the International Money and Capital Markets unit are developed with a strong emphasis on their applications to multinational corporate financial management.

International Banking:

In this unit you will study commercial and investment banking at national, international and global levels. Topics covered include, money and the banking system, banking structures and regulations, risk management in banking, scale and scope economies and the measurement of competition in banking, determinants of bank crashes and failures, global banking and regulation, global financial markets and instruments, and derivatives related financial crises.

Research Methods and Dissertation:

This is a scheme of independent research. We offer comprehensive training via lectures and workshops throughout the year to develop skills commensurate with standards of good research practice. You will be assigned a Dissertation supervisor who will provide feedback, guidance and support on an individual basis.

Programme Assessment

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, computer-based workshops, invited speakers and live case studies. Module Details

You will study the following four units and complete your studies with a dissertation:

Financial Econometrics

Econometrics is a core tool used in the study of finance. This unit will give you a strong practical understanding of the econometric tools you will be using throughout your study of finance. We take an applied approach to provide you with an intuitive understanding of a range of econometric techniques and their applications to a wide variety of problem-solving situations in finance. You will gain extensive experience with econometric and statistical packages such as Eviews and SPSS. Your work in this unit is supported by lectures, tutorials and workshops. Many of the econometric techniques covered in this unit are used and applied in other units in the course, to help you gain a good understanding of how to apply them successfully to the theory and practice of financial management.

Multinational Corporate Financial Management

In this unit you will study international finance from the corporate perspective. The first half of the unit focuses on the primary financial decisions of the firm, working capital management, advanced capital budgeting techniques, the strategic analysis of capital investment decisions, capital structure theories, and the financing and dividend decisions. Corporate financial management in a multinational context introduces many new problems, challenges and opportunities. The second half of the unit the focuses on corporate financial management from the global and international perspective. Topics you will study include the measurement and management of currency and interest rate risks, taxation, regulatory and political risks, mergers and acquisitions, and the international capital investment, financing and dividend decisions.

International Money and Capital Markets

This unit covers international finance from the securities and markets perspective, and complements the unit on Multinational Corporate Financial Management. You will study the currency and Eurocurrency markets, the international equity, fixed income and derivatives markets, financial institutions, financial regulation, and the models used to price the financial securities trading in these markets. The topics in the International Money and Capital Markets unit are developed with a strong emphasis on their applications to multinational corporate financial management.

Derivatives: Options, Futures and Swaps Markets

In this unit you will study the main derivatives securities and markets, options, forwards, futures and swaps. The emphasis is on the study of derivatives pricing models and how these are applied in speculation, hedging, arbitrage and price discovery in financial investments as well as in the measurement and management of financial risks. In finance some models work better than others. The pricing models and techniques developed in derivatives work so well that all professionals working in derivatives markets use these models and techniques all the time, every day. In this unit you will acquire a high degree of theoretical understanding and practical competence in using and applying these techniques.

Research Methods and Dissertation

This is a scheme of independent research. We offer comprehensive training via lectures and workshops throughout the year to develop skills commensurate with standards of good research practice. You will be assigned a Dissertation supervisor who will provide feedback, guidance and support on an individual basis.

Programme Assessment

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, computer-based workshops, invited speakers and live case studies. Student participation is encouraged and classes are challenging but informal and friendly, which promotes discussion and debate. The course tutors are available to support your studies and you will also have a personal tutor to provide help and guidance for any problems that you might have.

You are assessed in a variety of ways to reflect the individual topics. Our approaches to learning, assessment and feedback are varied and constructive, to help you build the personal management and employability skills that are essential for a fulfilling career.

These skills are in high demand and you’ll be strongly placed to enter industry in the finance and industrial sectors. Structure

The Postgraduate Certificate is made up of five of the seven core modules.

The Postgraduate Diploma is made up of the remaining compulsory modules and one additional optional module, allowing you to specialise in an area relevant to your career plans.

To achieve a Masters, you must complete a dissertation which gives you the chance to research an area of accounting or financial management that is of particular interest to you and of relevance to your career plans.

Format

You will learn through formal classes and seminar sessions, as well as group work and independent study. The course will include assignments, exercises, case studies and presentations, with an emphasis on independent learning to develop your analytical and problem solving skills.

Assessment

Assessments will be a mix of written assignments, supervised mini-projects, role playing, presentations and examinations.

Careers / Further study

Many of our graduates choose to specialise further by going on to study for the CIMA or ACCA qualifications and becoming chartered accountants.

A proficiency in accounting and financial management, as well as an appreciation of the contemporary issues faced by financial managers, can enable you to progress to senior positions, such as business analyst, finance director, investment analyst, financial reporting manager, chief accountant and head of risk management.
