CONSUMER SCIENCES

Students must complete 30 hours of coursework. A minimum of 24 semester hours of course credit, including HES 509, two courses in statistics, and 15 hours in courses in the area of specialization are required. Students must complete 6 credit hours of thesis research and write a thesis. A final oral examination is required upon completion of the thesis, and a manuscript of publishable quality based on the thesis research is expected of each Plan I degree candidate.

FAMILY FINANCIAL PLANNING AND COUNSELING

In the financial planning specialty within the 30-hour Master of Science degree program, students will study economic and social influences on the family and learn how to help individuals and families achieve their financial goals. Coursework includes 24 hours of financial planning coursework and 6 hours of electives in the area of specialization. By taking two courses each semester, students may complete this M.S. degree in less than two years. The program is offered both in Tuscaloosa and by distance.

CONSUMER CONFLICT MANAGEMENT, NEGOTIATION, AND MEDIATION

The certificate requires the successful completion of 15 hours of course work, in addition to the hours required for the masters in the student’s discipline. All 15 hours may count toward the master’s degree. Students must apply and gain admission to the UA Graduate School. Students must adhere to all UA Graduate School admission policies and deadlines. See Section 4.3 of the UA Graduate Catalog.

Students who wish to complete the Graduate Certificate in Conflict Management, Negotiation, and Mediation must meet admissions criteria for the Master’s degree in General Studies in Human Environmental Sciences with a 3.0 or higher GPA. If the prospective student does not have the 3.0 overall GPA or a 3.0 on the last 60 hours of course work, then the student must provide the GRE or MAT with an appropriate score. CONSUMER QUALITY MANAGEMENT

To deal with the complex challenges of urban development, planners have to know how to work with other professionals. This course equips you with the skills to produce sensitive plans and creative designs, taking into account the financial and practical issues associated with property development.

This course will develop your skills in urban design, planning and the development of cities.

You’ll study the UK urban experience and also rapidly urbanising cities in Asia and Africa. The course draws on leading teaching and research at the University, combining the urban design expertise of the School of Architecture and the international planning expertise of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning. The course is accredited as a Specialist Planning Programme by the Royal Town Planning Institute.

On this course you will undertake four 30 credit units and one 60 credit project unit.

Our courses are designed engaging, attractive and flexible in the current global marketplace. The six entry points through the year allow you to start when it is most suitable.

Your course takes place over three semesters. Depending upon when you join the course, this will determine the order of units which you will study. You will benefit by beginning your studies with others who started at one of the earlier points of entry.

This Master's course provides the opportunity to undertake different types of project, a "Capstone" experience which completes the integration of your studies applied in one of the following:

• Professional Practice - the central aim of this unit is to provide you with a thorough understanding of the commercial context in which organisations operate. By reflecting upon your existing knowledge and experience you will be required to respond to a number of work-based scenarios through critical evaluation to determine an appropriate course of action.

• The Live Project - this will enable you to work as part of a team on a project provided by a business organisation. The exact nature of the level of work, and nature of responsibility will depend upon the chosen organisation. However, there will be close negotiation between the company and the Business School.

• The dissertation - this is a conventional dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words, enabling you to undertake in-depth research of a topic relating to your course. It will consist of research question, aims and objectives, rationale for undertaking the study, literature review, research methodology, analysis of findings, conclusions and recommendations.

Assessment

In line with our commitment to practice-based education, a large part of the assessment will relate to the demonstration of your ability to understand Financial Risk Management in practice.

Teaching And Assessment

This highly flexible MSc takes an applied approach to learning. In addition to the six taught modules you will choose between a semester-long internship or a practical group project and either a dissertation or a consultancy project.

During the taught modules you will apply academic theory to real life business situations via tutorial-based activities, case discussion and group-work sessions. The course also includes a residential weekend to strengthen your self-reflection, independent learning and critical thinking skills.

Your second year includes either a 15,000-word dissertation or the Masters Consultancy Project which gives you an opportunity to work on a business problem or question faced by a real organisation.

Assessment takes the form of personal development planning, group and peer assessments, portfolios and reflective reports as well as traditional exams and essays.
