The Intensive Master of Clinical Embryology course (MCE) has gained global recognition as a training program for all assisted reproductive technologies (ART), producing high calibre embryologists, with the excellent knowledge and practical skills to eventually work in, and manage, human ART clinics. MCE is offered both on-campus (one year full time) and off-campus (restricted entry, full or part-time) to domestic and international students

Your studies will include the foundations of mammalian embryology, detailed assessment of all infertility treatment strategies, the theoretical basis behind embryo production, embryo selection and cryopreservation, focussing on all current and future technologies associated with ART. There are 3 units dedicated to Total Quality Management, Preimplantation Diagnosis and Ethics. Most importantly, we are equipped to teach all the practical skills required of andrologists and embryologists, beginning with sperm and embryo handling and assessment, and slowly building skills though learning in vitro fertilisation techniques, the latest cryopreservation techniques, such as vitrification of gametes and embryos finally finishing the year with ICSI and biopsy. While learning the practical skills, students are also given opportunities to visit ART clinics within Australasia and worldwide and all encouraged to attend ART industry conferences. Students engage in research projects that are designed to enhance practical and research skills, while assessments throughout the year are designed to measure the competency of students in theoretical, practical and research disciplines.

Overview

This 12-month, intensive course provides students with the essential postgraduate knowledge and practical skills necessary to contribute competently to human infertility clinical services. Theoretical and practical skills are presented in the broad context of the regulations and the ethical considerations that apply to human IVF, both nationally and internationally, along with the quality control procedures required to ensure maximum success for IVF patients. The guidelines, protocols and regulations that steer and control human infertility services are also presented. In addition to attending lectures and self-directed study, students are required to undertake continual practical skills training and also students will undertake a minor research project. Students will not only be equipped with practical skills required for work in an IVF laboratory but also gain a greater understanding of research applications within the field of reproductive or developmental biology. Research-related tasks contribute to the overall assessment for specific coursework units.

Career opportunities

On completion of this course graduates may gain employment as clinical embryologists, or work in laboratories in embryology, health, in vitro fertilisation (IVF), or in related jobs within the reproductive biology field.

IT Tralee is currently seeking to recruit ahigh calibre and suitably qualified science graduate to undertake this Master by Research programme in the Department of Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences at IT Tralee. Graduates holding a relevant Level 8 Honours Degree (second class honours or higher) are invited to submit an application. The successful applicants will be awarded a stipend of €700 per month for a maximum period of 18 months and the Institute will waive full fees for this funding period. Postgraduate students are expected to complete their studies full-time at the Institute.

Biography of Principle Supervisor

Mr Quille received his Degree in Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds from University College Cork in 2007. He has since completed an M.Sc in Biotechnology in the Shannon ABC laboratories at IT Tralee on a project entitled: The preparation of an alginate with a hydrophobic moiety that retains its biocompatibility and immunosuppressive properties while remaining suitable for cellular encapsulation. He has previously worked in Astellas as a Process Technician and in Shannon ABC as a Biochemical Technician. He currently holds the role of Research Scientist with Shannon ABC. Previous projects include developing a commercial focus to the use of bioassays in the assessment of different components of seaweed and the impact of seasonality. He has worked on the FP7 funded project NatuCrop where he oversaw extensive tomato growth room, glasshouse and field trials. Results of his work have been presented at a number of conferences all over Europe and in Brazil. He is currently working on a Horizon 2020 project. 

Research Project Abstract

Crop productivity relies heavily on nitrogen fertilisation which in itself requires huge amounts of energy to produce. Also excess applications of nitrogen to the land is detrimental to the environment therefore increasing plant nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is essential in the promotion of sustainable agriculture. The use of seaweed and seaweed extracts in agriculture is well documented. The most popular and well researched type of seaweed extract commercially available is an Ascophyllum Nodosum extract (ANE). Ascophyllum is a brown seaweed that is native to the waters of Ireland as it grows best in the North Atlantic basin. Seaweed extracts have been described to enhance seed germination and establishment, improve plant growth, yield, flower set and fruit production, increase resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, and improve postharvest shelf life. Previously a seaweed extract when combined with a fertiliser regime increased the productivity and oil content and accelerated maturation (colour and firmness) of the olive fruits from olive trees. Oil-Seed Rape (OSR; Brassica napus) is a member of the Brassicaceae family that is grown for its oil content. It requires extensive nitrogen fertilisation, however it has a poor N-harvest index meaning a lot of nitrogen is lost in the straw rather than transported to the pod. The aim or our study is to apply 4 commercially available ANE’s to winter and spring crops of OSR (different varieties) in a controlled growth room and glasshouse and finally in a field setting under different fertiliser regimes. Treatments will be assessed by comparing fresh weight, dry weight, and seed/oil yield and oil quality. Plant tissue will also be saved in order to assess other parameters such as flavonol accumulation, nitrate reductase, gene expression (NRT2) and photosynthetic parameters.

Research Context (Technical Merit & Impact)

600,000 Ha of OSR is planted in the UK and Ireland alone every year, recommended input of nitrogen is 200 kg (0.2 tonnes) per Ha meaning 120,000 tonnes of nitrogen every year. As OSR only has an N-harvest index of 0.6, representing 48,000 tonnes lost, which is a massive financial loss as well as potentially environmentally detrimental. In determining the effect of ANE’s on NUE current research focuses on the outcome, i.e. is yield increased, rather than investigate the method by which the yield has increased. This research is aimed a filling some void of knowledge here by linking phenotypic differences to biochemical and genetic data of treated plants in order to assign a potential mode of action.

Research Methodology

While ANE’s have been shown to increase nitrogen assimilation, extensive growth trials, especially in economically important crops (such as OSR) which investigate their role in affecting NUE are scarce and are only seemingly becoming popular in recent years. However considering the increased price of nitrogen, the additional interest in biostimulants (ANE’s in particular), the need to feed a growing population and coupled to the environmental damage of excess nitrogen this can be considered a ‘hot topic’. Plant (glasshouse and field setting) trials will be conducted and analysed for phenotypic data (photosynthetic measurements, yield). Materials from these plant trials must then be harvested, extracted and saved for biochemical and genetic determination. Lab-based techniques employed include protein extraction, western blotting and spectrophotometry, RT-PCR and HPLC. This 3 pronged approach from assessing phenotype to the biochemical level and finally to the gene level will provide evidence on mode of action of the ANE’s potential impact on NUE in OSR.

The Master of Biomedical Science Preliminary is designed for students interested in undertaking postgraduate research in biomedical sciences. A candidate is required to carry out a prescribed program of research for a specified period under the direct supervision of a member of the academic staff. The supervisor, in consultation with the candidate, is responsible for developing the research program to be followed by the candidate, and for reporting at regular intervals on the candidates progress.

The MBiomedSci Preliminary is designed for students who do not have the equivalent of a class 1 or class 2A honours degree in a relevant discipline. For graduates with only a Bachelor degree in a relevant field and who have not attempted honours in that field, admission to MBiomedSci Preliminary will normally require at least a credit grade average in 24 points of relevant third-year units, or appropriate additional training and experience.

Candidates must complete the MBiomedSci Preliminary program and obtain results equivalent to class 2A honours (H2A) or better for admission into Master of Biomedical Science. The MBiomedSci Preliminary is not an awardable degree. Candidates should complete their program of study within 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time. Students who pass MBiomedSci Preliminary of the program but who do not wish to continue or do not achieve class 2A honours or above will be offered the exit award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Sciences.

Candidates will be required to undertake a major research thesis of 75% of the entire course. The thesis should embody the results of the candidates investigation, which demonstrates independence of thought and the candidates ability to carry out research in that discipline. The remaining 25% of the course will comprise coursework such as a literature review and/or statistics classes, and is specified by the enrolling department.

Career opportunities

Students who have completed the course will demonstrate an understanding of relevant research techniques in their field through a review of the relevant literature. They will demonstrate their ability, under supervision to apply relevant research techniques to their chosen field of study. Students will be able to present high-quality written work suitable for publication in appropriate scholarly journals, and be able to critically evaluate both their own and others' written work in their chosen field.

The course is structured in 2 parts. Part A. Foundational studies for dietetics and Part B. Evidence based dietetics, planning and treatment and C. Dietetic practice. All students complete Parts B and C. Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A.

Part A. Foundational studies for dietetics
These studies will provide you with an orientation to dietetics at the advanced undergraduate and early graduate level. You will examine the nutrition and food science underpinning dietetics, consider population health in the context of nutrition and the Australian food supply, explore health behaviours and cultural competency, assessment of nutritional status, and the role of diet in the causation and treatment of chronic diseases that are endemic in westernised societies. These studies are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in nutrition science.

Part B. Evidence based dietetics, planning and treatment
These studies will provide you with the core knowledge and professional skills relevant to thoughtful, innovative and evidence-based dietetic practice and for accreditation with the Dietitian Association of Australia. You will learn about a range of clinical conditions and diseases and develop skill in dietetic education and case management with a focus on person-centred care. Part C. Dietetic practice

This course is designed both for BSc graduates with a suitable first degree in subjects such as Life Sciences or Biomedical Sciences and clinicians specializing in cancer related fields including medical or clinical oncology wishing to undertake a research degree to further their career in academic medicine.

Course objectives:
1) To provide science or medical graduates with an excellent introduction to the cellular and molecular biological basis of cancer.
2) To enable students to experience some of the most technologically advanced and diverse approaches currently being applied in the broad field of cancer biology through two independent 19-week research projects within the Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College.
3) To introduce students to the research environment, develop the experimental expertise required to embark on an independent research career and provide training in key transferable skills including bioinformatics, and grant writing.
4) To facilitate interactions between clinical and non-clinical scientists, enabling the cross-fertilisation of ideas and approaches bringing about greater understanding and future productive collaboration between scientists with differing backgrounds.

Structure of the MRes in Cancer Biology:
The course comprises an initial eight week taught component in which the cellular and molecular basis of cancer biology are covered plus an introduction to the clinical and pathological aspects of carcinogenesis. Within this period will also be a series of workshops covering key transferable skills such as statistics, bioinformatics and grant writing. This is followed by two separate 19-week research placements in the Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London.


Career opportunities:
The course is primarily designed to prepare students for an academic or industrial research career, with those students successfully completing the course ideally placed to apply for fellowships and register for a Ph.D.

Entrance requirements:
Applications are welcomed from candidates with a first degree in an appropriate medical or science subject. Candidates are normally expected to hold a good first degree (upper second class or better) from a UK university or an equivalent qualification if obtained outside the UK. In line with Imperial College policy, students for whom English is not their first language will be expected to pass the British council IELTS test at grade 6.0 or above, with a score of 5 or above I each component. Our Medical Ethics & Law programme is designed for medical/legal professionals, graduates of a relevant discipline, those going on to research and for anyone wanting to think about some of the hardest human decisions.

You will study the ethical and legal questions raised in the context of medicine, which include genetics, assisted reproduction, abortion, assisted suicide and euthanasia, autism, psychiatric ethics and mental health law, medical research, organ donations and the allocation of scarce resources.

Course format and assessment

You will be taught through a combination of lectures and seminars.

Full time students have an average of 6 seminar hours per week. However, this will vary depending on which modules you choose to take and in which semester they are taught. Full time students are expected to spend 32-34 hours engaged in self-study per week.

Part time students have an average of 2-4 hours of seminars per week. They are expected to engage in 14-16 hours of self-study a week.

Contact time is based on 24 academic weeks (typically there is 1 reading week per semester), whereas self-study time is based on 31 academic weeks.

The total notional study hours for the MA are 1800 (10 hours per 1 credit). Notional study hours comprise formal teaching and learning activities, such as lectures and tutorials, as well as assessments and independent research and study.

Assessment

Many modules are assessed by coursework, i.e. one essay, usually of a maximum of 3500 words. Some modules are assessed by one 2-hour exam.

Many alumni go on to work in policy-related positions, which include the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, the Human Tissue Authority, the Nuffield Council on Bioethics and the Department of Health. Dissertation/report

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a substantial report and an oral examination.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of teaching and self-directed learning, and includes up to six weeks of clinical placements. Assessment is through clinical assessments, written assignments, oral presentations, multiple choice tests, submission of the literature review and research proposal, assessed coursework, unseen and prior disclosure written examinations, and the dissertation with an oral presentation.

Careers

Recent graduates have pursued careers in academia, research or furthered their clinical practice. For example, acquiring this MSc enabled a student to take up a post as an associate lecturer at a university and another to be offered a consultant physiotherapy position at a leading NHS hospital. Several students have used the MSc as a ‘springboard’ for gaining funding to undertake PhDs at UCL, Great Ormond Street Hospital and King's College London amongst others. Graduates have secured senior positions, such as team leads and clinical specialist posts within major London hospitals.
