About the course

Applications have closed to start the MPhil in Sociology and Demography in 2017-18. Applications to start in October 2018 will open in September.

The MPhil introduces students to contemporary theories and research methods on the intersection of sociology and demography. This 21-month programme takes a life-course and multilevel approach, aiming to integrate micro and macro issues in analysing social problems and the causes and consequences of population change.

The MPhil Sociology and Demography will prepare you for doctoral work in sociology and demography and research-intense jobs.

The curriculum emphasises:

• population-level analysis and demographic measures
• a life course approach
• sociological analysis as the key approach to explanation
• advanced quantitative methods.

This emphasis is reflected in the compulsory papers. Optional papers and the thesis will reflect either a more specialised topical study (eg gender, family and fertility, migration and integration of migrants, health and mortality, intergenerational relationships) or methodological work.

The MPhil programme has the following components:

• Sociological Analysis paper taught in the first year through lectures and seminars, assessed by an unseen examination
• Demographic Analysis paper taught in the first year through lectures, seminars and computer labs, assessed through a combination of examination and assignments
• Life Course Research paper taught in the first year through lectures, seminars and computer labs, assessed through a combination of methods
• Statistical Methods paper taught in the first year through lectures and computer labs, assessed through a combination of a test and assignments
• Research Design paper taught in the first year through lectures, assessed via a combination of methods
• Two optional papers over both years of the MPhil, normally taught through eight weekly classes/seminars for each paper and assessed by unseen examination or appropriate coursework
• Replication project in the second year, comprising a combination of individual and group work and assessed via assignments
• MPhil thesis, a substantial piece of original research (of up to 30,000 words) to be submitted by the end of the second year

Graduate destinations

Graduates often continue with a PhD at Oxford or doctoral studies at highly-ranked US and continental programmes. Others find placement in research-intensive occupations in the public sector (eg national statistical offices, government departments and regional/local authorities), in international organisations, think tanks, and in private sector occupations in which quantitative skills are highly valued (consulting, market research, health research, social research, and insurance companies).

The MSc in Sociology for 2017-18 has now closed to new applications. Applications for the 2018-19 academic year will become available in September.

Students are given high quality research training in sociology, which includes knowledge of relevant theoretical approaches, an understanding of their application to substantive problems and skills in the use of major research techniques. The course prepares students for doctoral work in sociology and research-intense jobs in the public and private sector.

The MSc Sociology is a one-year taught course which is assessed in five elements.

Sociological analysis:

A compulsory core paper on sociological analysis, for which you sit a three hour unseen examination at the end of Trinity Term. The paper examines the nature of different sociological explanations, their potentials and methodological implications and their relationship with concepts from other disciplines. The interrelationships between description and explanation, theory and empirical data.

The course, in Michaelmas Term, consists of eight lectures (one hour each) followed by two seminars (also one hour each) where the class is split in two groups.

Research methods:

A compulsory research methods course, for which you are examined through a mixture of a formal examination and take-home assignments. This course comprises three sections: statistics, qualitative methods and research design.

Statistics:

The statistics course consists of eight statistics lectures and eight STATA sessions in the IT Laboratory (Michaelmas Term). Qualitative Methods (Michaelmas Term) consists of eight lectures and Research Design (Hilary Term) consists of eight lectures and classes.

Option papers:

You will take two option papers in Hilary term, for which you sit either an unseen examination or complete appropriate coursework. You should note that the options available may vary from year to year. There are normally eight weekly classes for each paper. Dissertation:

The MA Creative Music Production is aimed at applicants specifically interested in applying studio technologies and production skills to the creation of their own original music (as opposed to “producing” other artists’ music). Careers

Graduates from this award will be equipped with a wide range of specialist knowledge and skills in the field of music technology and music creation – from purely technical to creative and intellectual. You may, in addition, consider positions in music publishing, music journalism and criticism, or teaching, or you may continue your higher education at doctoral level.

Teaching methods

Lecture, seminars and tutorials are typically scheduled over two consecutive days a week, plus some extra sessions for particular workshops, performance, recording, as necessary. In addition to scheduled sessions, students are expected to engage in continuous self-directed study and studio practice.

The MA Creative Music Production is led by Bruce Aisher.  Bruce is a music producer, songwriter, composer, remixer, sound designer and technology journalist whose work is to be found on over 100 commercially released tracks (including a US Billboard Club Chart No.1) on TV programmes such as ‘CSI’ ‘Numb3rs’ and 'Top Gear' and products by Apple, Clavia and Native Instruments.

Entry requirements

A good (1st, 2.1 or 2.2) BMus/BSc/BA in Music / Music Technology (or equivalent qualification), or 5 years professional industry experience at the discretion of the admissions or programme tutor. Evidence of solid compositional work with technology prior to undertaking the course is required (determined by the submission of a small portfolio of original compositions with the student’s application).

All international students are required to demonstrate suitable levels of English language competence. This can be through previous study in English, but we often require specific performance in English tests. All undergraduates must be able to prove a minimum of IELTS 6.5 with at least 5.5 in every component or equivalent.

Our course builds your skills in leadership and management and teaches you how to apply them in an engineering context. You'll explore the impact of new technologies and how they relate to management in the engineering sector. Your studies will cover business analysis, product development and supply chain management.

You will apply your core management skills and learn more about engineering business in your second semester. Coursework and assessment

Course unit details

There are (i) eight course units to attend over two academic terms and (ii) a dissertation project to be completed in the summer term. Teaching of the course units is shared by the School of Mathematics and the Manchester Business School and delivered through lectures, case studies, seminars and group project-based work.

First term course units (autumn): Derivative Securities; Foundations of Finance Theory; Martingales with Applications to Finance; Stochastic Calculus.

Second term course units (spring): Brownian Motion; Computational Finance; Time Series Analysis and Forecasting in Finance; Stochastic Modelling in Finance.

Third term dissertation project (summer): In this term students will conduct an original study of a topic relating to the programme and write an MSc dissertation.

The MBA Masterclasses are not a compulsory part of your study however, they give you the opportunity to enhance your study, meet with the module leader and network with fellow MBA students.

The module enables placement students (as future managers and leaders) to analyse the ways in which the design and organization of work places and spaces might influence organisational culture. The design and interior layout of buildings represent ‘the visible part of the culture of an organization’, with these spaces being representative of an organisation’s collective values, beliefs and behaviours.

Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Introductory Certificate

The CIM Introductory Certificate provides an internationally recognised qualification in marketing. We provide all the materials necessary to prepare you for this award as part of your course fees. The programme can be undertaken anywhere in the world, as we use facilitative technologies to enable your engagement with the course team, fellow students and course materials. Normally, you will complete three blocks of 14 weeks study. After the completion of the taught modules you will have a further nine months to complete your Business Research Project. The distance learning programme normally runs twice a year with September and February starts.

It combines master's level academic study of business education with a range of school and college experiences. Completion of the 10 month course leads to both a postgraduate qualification and qualified teacher status (QTS).

More than two-thirds of your time will be spent in our partnership schools and colleges, where you will develop practical teaching skills with the support of trained mentors and established teachers. You will have the opportunity to visit a range of educational establishments, in particular outstanding local sixth form colleges, to hone your skills and understanding of specific teaching theory and practice.

Collaborative learning and formative teaching will allow you to develop the knowledge and capabilities of students in your own classrooms in all aspects of business education, including business studies, economics, and accounting and key vocational business qualifications. Aims

The University-based components of the course will enable you to reflect on teaching, learning and pedagogy, and encourages you to observe how children learn. Sessions will include:

  • business studies and economics subject knowledge and pedagogy;
  • current debates in business education;
  • planning lessons;
  • assessment for learning; differentiation;
  • managing pupil behaviour; and
  • keeping records and using data and ICT to support pupils' progress.

In addition, you will be able to observe and discuss a number of `best lessons' which are planned and delivered by experienced practitioners. You will be encouraged to make the transition from subject specialist to outstanding teacher.

Teaching and learning

The structure of our PGCEs includes both school-based and University-based learning. On our secondary PGCEs, around two thirds of your time will be spent in secondary schools, academies or colleges on placements. You will also need to undertake self-directed study in the evenings and weekends, such as background reading, creating lesson plans and completing written assignments.

The course is a partnership between the University and its partner schools and colleges which are drawn from a wide area, including Bolton, Bury, Cheshire, Deeside, Lancashire, Manchester, Merseyside, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Staffordshire, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Warrington and Wigan. Each placement school or college has a designated business education mentor who has been trained by the University.

The usual placement pattern is a main school experience, followed by a contrasting placement, before returning to the main school/college in the final weeks of the course. As a trainee in a placement school or college you will observe and teach classes under the guidance of experienced subject mentors.

You will be given a significant amount of responsibility to develop your own teaching style, to set personal targets, to demonstrate initiative and to evaluate your work in planning, teaching and assessing. You will participate actively in your own professional development as a teacher through seminars, lectures, group discussion, practical workshops, reflection, trainee-led sessions, peer review and tutorials.

Coursework and assessment

School and University-based experiences are formally assessed and your school/college mentors and University tutors will help you to record your achievements and to set targets.

During each placement, a University tutor will observe your teaching and at the end of each placement you will receive a report from your mentor. The report will grade you in the following areas: teaching; planning, differentiation and assessment; learning environment; and wider professional responsibilities. The grades are awarded by your mentor in conjunction your University tutor. These reports, together with your record of achievement and development, facilitate your progression as a trainee teacher.

You are also required to complete a number of written assignments which allow you to gain 60 master's level credits. Modules include: Teaching, Learning and Assessment, a School/College-based Enquiry (with supporting literature review), and a Reflection of Professional Practice. On-going guidance and support to complete these assignments will be available from your University tutors.

The candidates will be able to select a title from the list below, or suggest their own project relevant to research conducted in the host laboratory. Our priority areas of studies are: molectual mechanisms of interaction between pathogenic bacteria and host cells, virulence factors, mechanisms of bacterial stress response, molecular genetics and genomics with a focus on Campylobacter jejuni and other bacterial pathogens.

Examples of potential research projects:

(1) Investigation of host-pathogen interaction (e.g. to study of adhesins of Campylobacter jejuni and cognate host cell receptors)

(2) Application of IonTorrent Next Generation Sequencing for comparative analysis of bacterial pathogens (e.g. to study genetic mechanisms responsible for structural variation of a capsular polysaccharide of Campylobacter jejuni)

The research will employ a wide range of state of the art microbiological and molecular biology techniques, and a successful candidate will receive extensive training and support from an experienced supervisor.

It is expected that the student will actively participate in scientific meetings and writing research articles with a possibility to progress to a PhD, and a postdoctoral post in future (depending on performance). 

Personal requirements:

- enthusiastic and eager to learn;

- keen on research in molecular microbiology in general, and in investigation of bacterial pathogens in particular.

- some basic skills in bench work would be beneficial.

Do you prefer a work based route? This initial teacher training course covers the knowledge and skills that are required for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with training led by your host school supported by the University of Sunderland.

Course overview

PGCE School Direct is a unique school led route that provides exciting opportunities for you to train though work based learning, as a teacher, in a school. There are two routes available within School Direct:
Salaried Route
The salaried route is available to those candidates who have three or more years experience in schools and settings. Trainees apply direct to the school for a salaried position and are trained by the school in partnership with the University. You may also be eligible for a salaried route if you are a ‘career changer’ with transferrable skills.

Tuition Fee Route
This route is designed for trainees who prefer an apprenticeship approach to training. Trainees apply direct to the school via UCAS Sunderland codes and are trained by the school in partnership with the University.

How to Apply
In order to apply you should choose the school, or group of schools, in which you train and apply to them against the relevant University of Sunderland code. School Direct is run as a partnership between a Lead School, other schools in their Alliance and the University of Sunderland as the accredited teacher training provider.

Course content

Your training will blend academic study provided by the University of Sunderland with hands-on placements organised by the school that employs you.

PGCE Secondary Course content:
-School placement (with some experience in another secondary setting);
-Master's Module 1: Development of Learning: A Case Study – you will identify an educational intervention and explore its use, impact and influence upon the learning of one or more pupils;
-Subject Studies module (developed in school placement);
-Master's Module 2: Negotiated Individual Study in Education – you will undertake a piece of action research into an educational issue.

PGCE Primary 3-11 Course content:
-School placements in 3-7 or 7-11 Key Stages
-Master's Module 1: Development of Learning: A Case Study – you will identify an educational intervention and explore its use, impact and influence upon the learning of one or more pupils;

-Master's Module 2: Negotiated Individual Study in Education – you will undertake a piece of action research into an educational issue.

Teaching and assessment

School Direct Trainees will receive academic input during University return days timetabled throughout the year.

All University Modules are designed to support Trainees in developing their knowledge and confidence in teaching. University input is delivered by both expert Tutors and excellent Practitioners from Partnership Schools, in a wide variety of ways including, lectures, tutorials and practical workshops as well as online discussions.

All aspects of the Programme are designed to enable you to meet and demonstrate the National College for Teaching (NCTL) and Leadership Standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Students will compile evidence against the Standards throughout the Programme in their online e-Portfolio.

The PGCE Primary School Direct Tutor Team is committed to providing the best experiences for our Trainees. Our Personal Tutor system ensures all Trainees are allocated an individual Tutor and are nurtured and developed both academically and professionally throughout the Programme.

Assessment is continuous throughout the course. Subject knowledge is monitored through the use of subject audits which enable students to identify their strengths and areas of development and to then action plan with Subject Specialist Tutors support to increase their knowledge and confidence in identified areas.

Modules are assessed through a variety of assessment methods including, Assignments, Portfolio and Practice Based Tasks.

Assessed Placements are assessed by Partnership schools/settings in liaison with the University.

Your training will be based in the school that employs you. Academic studies will be delivered by the University of Sunderland.

Course location
Your studies at the University of Sunderland will be based at the Forster Building on City Campus and at the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s. Sunderland is a very vibrant and supportive environment with excellent resources for teaching and learning.

University Library Services
We’ve got thousands of books and e-books on education topics, with many more titles available through the inter-library loan service. We also subscribe to a comprehensive range of print and electronic journals. Resources include the EBSCO Professional Development Collection, which is a specialised collection of over 500 education journals.

Employment & careers

By joining this programme you will also be taking a big step towards sorting your first post-qualification teaching job. That’s because the school will select you and customise your training to suit their needs as well as yours. One of the goals of the programme is for schools to be able to grow their own teachers and future leaders – so there is every reason for the school to continue to employ you after the award of QTS.

With QTS you will be qualified to teach in any state-maintained school in England and Wales. This gives you flexibility in case your plans change or you decide to work elsewhere.

The starting salary of a newly qualified teacher is over £21,000, with extra if you work in London. Teachers see their salaries rise by an average of 30 per cent after their first four years in the job.
