This distance learning programme builds on the strength and success of the campus-based taught MSc Mathematical Finance at the University of York. The online MSc was launched in September 2009 to run alongside the campus-based programme.

Applications are invited for the intake of students in September or February. Candidates should submit their application at least two weeks before an intake is due to start.

A online Pre-sessional Programme is available for candidates who need to strengthen or consolidate their mathematics background before embarking on the MSc. Such candidates need to apply at least three months before an MSc intake is due to start.

Online students will be developing skills and competence in Mathematical and Quantitative Finance which are of direct relevance in the field of work, and can open up fantastic employment and progression opportunities.

The online programme has built-in flexibility to meet the needs of distance learners from diverse backgrounds:
-City and other professionals, who wish to pursue a postgraduate degree programme without disrupting their career commitments
-Individuals, companies and professional organisations seeking suitable Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses
-Recent university graduates who need to support themselves or their families while continuing their studies to postgraduate level
-Students who find it difficult to attend a campus-based programme because of a variety of reasons such as family care commitments or disability
-Overseas students who seek a degree in Mathematical Finance from a leading British university but prefer to pursue their studies from their home country

Course outline

The distance learning programme is delivered online using Internet conferencing and application sharing software and a web-based Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

A distinctive feature are regular one-to-one ("Oxbridge style") online tutorials and supervisory sessions.

Interactive presentations are provided on CDs and for downloading via the VLE in lieu of lectures, supported by lecture notes, worked exercises, synchronous one-to-one online tutorials and an asynchronous discussion forum.

No presence on campus is required, but access to suitable hardware, software and a good internet connection are necessary pre-requisites.

The online MSc programme consists of three stages: Certificate, Diploma and Dissertation, preceded by a brief Induction Module. The programme structure section provides the contents and specifications for the modules comprising each of these stages.

There are two four-month teaching periods in each academic year, 1 October - 31 January and 15 March - 15 June, and two intakes per year, in September and February. Completing the online MSc can take from 18 months (Fast Stream) to 36 months (Standard Stream). Transfers between the two streams are possible between stages.

Students have remote access to electronic library resources, and full pastoral and study support including a personal supervisor and a dissertation supervisor.

Assessment is by means of written coursework submitted electronically and a recorded online Viva Voce (an oral examination) held at the end of each of the three stages (Certificate, Diploma, Dissertation) of the programme.

Modules for each option vary - please refer to MSc course option pages for descriptions of compulsory modules which must be undertaken. Students also have an extensive choice of optional modules to match their specific interests.

Group project

The extensive group design project is a distinctive and unique feature of this course. This teamwork project takes place from October to March (or March-August for the March intake), and recreates a virtual industrial environment bringing together students with various experience levels and different nationalities into one integrated design team.

Each team member is given the responsibility for the detailed design of a significant part of the aircraft, for example, forward fuselage, fuel system, or navigation system. The project progress a design from the conceptual phase through to the preliminary and detail design phases. Students will be required to run project meetings, produce engineering drawings and conduct detailed analyses of their design. Problem solving and project co-ordination must be undertaken on a team and individual basis. At the end of the project, the group is required to report and present findings to a panel of up to 200 senior engineers from industry and academia.

This element of the course is both realistic and engaging, and places the whole student group in a professional role as aerospace design engineers. Students testify that working as an integrated team on real problems is invaluable and prepares them well for careers in a highly competitive industry.

Students following the Structural Design option do not participate in the Group Design Project but instead undertake a more intensive individual project.

The role of pharmacists in the emergency department offers an exciting opportunity to work in a new field of practice. Pharmacists are also extending their scope of practice in urgent and acute medicine areas in primary and secondary care.

Our six-month Advanced Clinical Skills short course enables trainee pharmacy practitioners to independently evaluate, assess and recommend or prescribe medicines for patients who present to emergency departments.

This will allow junior and senior medical staff to attend to more urgent medical patients in a clinical setting and aims to decrease waiting times for patients with minor injuries. Research has shown that hospital pharmacists with additional skills in independent prescribing and advanced clinical assessment could manage up to 35.7% of patients presenting to emergency departments.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to manage emergency and urgent patients in addition to working as part of a multidisciplinary emergency, acute medicine and urgent care team.

Our course confers 30 postgraduate (Level 7) credits upon completion and can be taken as a standalone course by pharmacists who are already non-medical prescribers. If you are not already a non-medical prescriber, you can take this course before starting our Independent Prescribing short course . Completing both of these courses within two years of registering will lead to a PGCert in Advanced Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine .

Aims

This course aims to:

  • provide you with the skills to independently evaluate and assess patients who present to the emergency department, acute medicine or urgent care setting;

The postgraduate diploma course in Adult Nursing is open to applicants with a first-degree or a higher degree; the programme makes use of Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) provision for prior learning to allow students to complete the academic award and achieve professional registration as a nurse via a two-year course. Successful applicants will undertake some of their studies alongside undergraduate students completing the BSc (Hons) in Adult Nursing, but will also complete dedicated study at Master's level to achieve a postgraduate qualification.

The NMC’s Standards for Pre-registration Nursing Education (2010) require programmes leading to registration to be delivered over 4600 hours, with 50% of this theory and 50% practice; NMC do however permit prior learning to be recognised where this can be mapped against the programme outcomes and requirements. Students applying for this programme will therefore need to demonstrate that they have the relevant experience and learning prior to entering the course.

Throughout the course you will develop your knowledge and understanding of the art and science of adult nursing. Communication and team working are key in health and social care and you will develop a range of interpersonal skills that enable you to work effectively with a wide diversity of clients and within complex settings.

The health economy is rapidly changing and future nurses are likely to be located in a broader range of workplaces. Your placement opportunities will therefore be in a diverse range of settings which include the growing independent sector as well as care within the community, preparing you to function effectively and meet the health care needs of an increasing ageing population.

Watch a webinar presentation to find out more about the course or attend one of our Undergraduate Open Day events where the PGDip Adult Nursing programme is represented.

Please note that this course is not recruiting for September 2017. We will be recruiting a funded intake to this course in February 2018. You can apply for February 2018 using the September 2017 start date in UCAS. Funding arrangements for students starting in September 2018 are unconfirmed by the Government.
