Course content

The Postgraduate Certificate Practice Education is two module programme, which will enable you to fulfil the role of Practice Educator: supporting, assessing and training student social workers in practice.

Module 1: Practice Education 1, meets Stage 1 of the new Practice Educator Professional Standards (PEPS); you will normally complete this module in one year.

Module 2: Practice Education 2, meets Stage 2 of the PEPS, and successful completion of both modules will result in the award of the Postgraduate Certificate. A key feature of this programme is the possibility of importing and ‘upgrading’ credit from previously completed ‘ Enabling Learning ‘ courses . This may allow you to progress directly to the Practice Education 2 module and complete the Postgraduate Certificate in one year.

A business studies graduate might typically expect to work within a commercial environment, but the skills you’ll develop through the degree will be equally applicable to employment within the public and not-for-profit sectors of the economy.

Work placements

You’ll have the option to undertake a four year professional placement programme by completing a one-year internship in year three. Following this placement, you’ll return to university to complete your final year. The internship is typically salaried and, if you choose this route, you will receive professional placement recognition as part of your degree title. Should you wish to progress beyond the Postgraduate Certificate the University offers you a choice of professional pathways:

The MA in Practice Education offers modules in Mentoring, Developing Resilience, Advanced Critical Analysis, and Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.

The MA in Advanced Professional Practice allows you to combine your Practice Education modules with a choice from a range of university and work-based modules. Studying for the Berlin MBA means

... that you will get to know people from all over the world sharing one classroom with you: 84% of our graduates 2013 were coming from abroad and 16% from Germany. Despite the diversity of our study groups, there is one thing that unites them all and this is the motivation to give their career a different direction. And this is what our graduates 2013 achieved in terms of career change/transition: 50% changed position and industry, 27 % changed position in the same industry and 4% changed position within the same company. So all in all 81% of our graduates successfully achieved a career change.

What most of our international candidates intrigues about studying for an MBA in Germany and in Berlin is the opportunity to work for a company in Germany after graduation. Of our international graduates 2013 59% achieved this goal.
And here are some examples of career change/career transitions:

One of our graduates from Spain who was working as a research analyst is now working as a Regional Manager for a start-up company in Berlin. A project engineer from Greece is now working as a consultant for a company in the renewable energy area in Berlin. A journalist and researcher from the US joined a start-up company in Berlin as Communications & Marketing Manager. An IT Analyst from Russia became Head of Office IT in Berlin. A Business Development Manager from Norway moved the career ladder up and is now Director of Business Development in Frankfurt a.M.

MBA in Transatlantic Management

Be a part of the global study world

The Berlin full-time MBA in Transatlantic Management prepares for leadership or consulting roles in companies or organisations which operate in a transatlantic context. The pathway course content will focus on general international management issues with a particular focus on transatlantic issues. Students will learn about topics such as the North American Free Trade Agreement and the European Union and their implications for cross-border trade and foreign direct investment.

Certain forms of market entry such as licensing/franchising will receive particular attention. Important variations in business law and corporate governance standards on both sides of the Atlantic will be examined. Differences in business culture and general business practices in American and European companies will be elucidated.

The primary focus is on finding viable and feasible management solutions in real-life situations confronting cross-boarder-aware businesses and organisations.

To realise this goal effectively, business theory is always linked to best practices and placed in an intercultural context – a process that underscores how business activities are located within a social surround where overall economic and social factors play their part.

Introducing your degree

This is the course page for MRes Wildlife Conservation at the University of Southampton. Find out everything about Wildlife Conservation and what studying here involves.

In this course page we explain a range of key information about the course. This includes typical entry requirements, modules you can take and how assessment works. We also suggest career opportunities open to you as a University of Southampton graduate of MRes Wildlife Conservation.

If you still have questions, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to answer any enquiries. See our contact us page for our telephone, email and address information.

Overview

Please note: This programme is currently undergoing its five year review. There may be some slight changes to the programme which will be implemented from September 2018. This process should be completed in early 2018. We therefore advise that applications are made after this date, so that you are fully informed when making your application. We will shortly welcome our fifth intake of students and any changes made to the programme will be informed by our experiences from the previous five cohorts, of course including student feedback.

This Wildlife Conservation Masters course is jointly delivered as a collaborative programme with Marwell Wildlife. It offers an unusually high degree of interaction between the University and an action-oriented Conservation organisation. The aim of this MRes is to produce individuals with the skills, experience and academic credentials required for a career in Conservation biology.

In order to provide an immersive experience for students and to ensure we have the scope to cover all that the MRes encompasses, the course is based on a full calendar year, running from the start of Semester one (October-Jan), through semester two (Feb-June), and beyond, right up until late September. The MRes is a full-time course only, with no provision for a part-time option at this time.

Career Opportunities

This MRes allows those with career aspirations within conservation to enhance their prospects in a number of ways. You will develop your academic credentials and your practical skills, jointly, without having to choose to invest in one route or the other. You will be exposed to, and have the opportunity to work alongside, practicing conservation biologists, providing you with valuable experience and insight into the realities of working in conservation. By undertaking an in-depth 8 month research project you will develop some specialist knowledge within your area of interest, and be exposed to a wider network of conservation biologists and other industry professionals working for organizations that collaborate with Marwell Wildlife (for example, European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, Kenya Wildlife Service, Natural England). This wide range of experience, and any contacts within the conservation network you have made, will assist you when applying for positions within conservation NGOs and wildlife focused government agencies.

Additionally, graduates will find the MRes programme an excellent way to prepare for a PhD in conservation science as you will gain experience of undertaking postgraduate research, as well as having the opportunity to begin developing your own specialist area of study, off the back of your 8 month in-depth research project . Students should note that the research undertaken for the MRes Project would be independent of research for a PhD.
