Our taught postgraduate programme aims to develop advanced knowledge and practice through the exploration of concepts and contemporary topics in design, fashion and textiles. The programme content challenges traditional and contemporary uses of fashion and textiles, as well as creating the opportunity, through well-resourced workshops, to promote new approaches and processes in fashion and textiles. The design of the programme also encourages inter-disciplinary projects reflecting the School's strategy of creative collaborations between subject areas to foster design innovation.

The MSc in Fashion and Textiles Management attracts applicants from business as well as fashion and textile backgrounds and results in projects that test and develop theory in the form of an academic paper.

The course aims to develop practice-based learning, informed by an in-depth study of design. It tends to attract students from an art and design background, looking to challenge established practice and offer new insights. Through well-resourced workshops the course also promotes new approaches and processes.

You’ll be able to study an area of fashion and textiles that interests you. You’ll also be encouraged to work on inter-disciplinary projects, reflecting the School's strategy of creative collaborations between subject areas to foster design innovation. And, you’ll be supported by staff with knowledge that covers everything from design and manufacture through to technology and creativity.

MA Fashion is fast moving. Students build up momentum in their design work which replicates working practices in the industry.

This postgraduate course is about leading not following, accepting criticism, learning and moving on. It is not a hobby. It has an international profile second to none.

MA Fashion is offered in four pathways that are interrelated and structured around the core subject of fashion. It is part of the Fashion programme.

With an emphasis on research, market intelligence and industry awareness, MA Fashion believes that truly relevant, innovative design is not purely a creative activity involving designers in the artistic process – it also recognises the ability to analyse markets, the industry and society in general. Designers or journalists must not only be conversant with the broad fashion context; they must also be able to diagnose markets accurately and to communicate with colleagues and management.

MA Fashion emphasises presentation and communication skills. Students must not only create the right product for the market but also be good communicators capable of convincing colleagues that their ideas are based on a mature understanding of markets and competitors.

You’ll get involved in the debates generated by our Professional Speakers Talks, related projects, and the inter-pathway critiques that help you develop your critical and communication skills. Structure

MA Fashion lasts 45 weeks full-time, structured in two units over five terms (which may vary in length) commencing in late October.

Over recent decades the fashion and textile industries has been making changes; responding to enviromental and social needs; publishing corporate social reports and working with industry bodies and NGOs. Yet the Rana Plaza disaster in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2013 was tragedy for the workers, their families, the country and the industries, and an imperative for new thinking, new practice, and fresh ethics. It is a horrific milestone for fashion manufacture, communication, consumer awareness and industry responsibilities. The industries are now reaching out to governments, NGOs, charities, unions and radical thinkers for advice and support. They are accountable for their current and future ethics. Without doubt it is time for change in which education is a crucial contributor to the new solutions, and alternative futures for the industries.

The new MSc Ethics in Fashion (See http://www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/prog/msc-ethics-in-fashion/ ) is a research led, taught programme, focussed on analysing and understanding the industry, whilst mapping the changes in practice, monitoring the voices and diversity of stakeholders in the supply-chain. The programme offers a chance for ethically aware graduates and established professionals to refresh and extend their knowledge and skillset. An escalating need for an Ethics in Fashion programme has been identified, and Heriot-Watt University is in a unique position with subject specific research faculty, global industry links, outstanding fashion and textiles facilities and an enviable pastoral location, with strong transport connections.

The taught programme has been created for those wanting to work, or already working in the fashion and textiles industries, in design, sourcing management, buying, journalism and corporate affairs. The qualification provides a set of fresh perspectives and insights for an existing first degree qualification, or relevant experience in any of the above areas or similar for those wanting to be part of the dynamic changing industries.

Industry links

The School of Textiles and Design, and the research staff have strong global industry and NGO links in design, corporate social responsibility reporting and corporate affairs, social enterprise. In addition teaching staff are Fellows of the Fellowship of 500, in the Ethical Fashion Forum. There are both courses, and research opportunities to work with local and international industry.

The programme has been designed to utilise selected core postgraduate courses offered within the School and introducing courses specific to Ethics in Fashion, thus encouraging inter-disciplinary participation and discourse, and membership of the a growing research community.

With its three distinctive but interconnected pathways, this course is for dynamic students looking to thrive within the fashion communications industry at the highest level. The Fashion Journalism pathway focuses on writing, editing and digital media. Fashion Communication & Promotion is for innovative image-makers; and Fashion Critical Studies offers an academic approach to the analysis of Fashion.

Content

The MAFC course consists of three specific pathways. While each pathway has a distinct approach to Fashion Communication, cross pathway projects will connect subject specialists into vibrant groups creating challenging and industry relevant experiences.

There are key points in the year when MAFC students will interact with MA Fashion Design students and experience Fashion Communication in a live context. In January and February the build up to the MA Fashion Show at London Fashion Week will provide opportunities to participate in the production and organisation of a fashion show. In May MAFC students can work with BA Fashion students as they present their degree fashion show.

The MAFC course is framed in the highly creative Fashion Programme at Central Saint Martins, but also within an Art School philosophy where other creative disciplines such as Graphic Communication, Architecture, Textiles, Jewellery, Product Design and Fine Art offer debates, collaborations and new approaches to the subject.

The extensive global CSM networks offer contemporary fashion links, creative networks and live industry projects. Module Details

The course is offered over one year (full-time) or two years (part-time) and includes:

Research: methodologies, analytical skills, visual analysis, research management and organisation.

It's specifically and purposefully designed for creative thinkers using innovative and apposite methods of delivery, including an opportunity to work within an established or integrated fashion label within the course itself adopting the Atelier approach.
Concept and Design: brand identity, flexible and future focused market thinking, range planning end user analysis and product development.
Skill and Manufacture: mastering existing skills in a recognisable niche product area through specialist workshops and facilities.
Professional Practice: embedded throughout the programme with high quality visiting lecturers and practitioners alongside the University’s award winning careers department.

Core units comprise:

A Question of Research: 30 credits. This unit provides an introduction to debates and research methods relevant for creative practitioners and your application to a pertinent research question. It also encourages self reflection on the research process.
Fashion/Textile Enterprise: 30 credits. Explore business research strategy and planning, develop analytical and entrepreneurial skills, and become adept at flexible and future focused market thinking.
Fashion/Textile Industry: 60 credits. Work with an established or integrated fashion and textiles label.
Fashion/Textile Major Project: 60 credits. Supervised by Academic and/or Business mentor(s) to undertake an extended self-directed project, informed by research.

Programme Assessment

Teaching methods include a mixture lectures, seminars, group critiques, live projects, workshops, individual tutorials and events. During the final stage of the course, learning becomes more independent and self-managed, making your timetable more flexible.

The learning environment will be primarily studio, seminar room and workshop based but will also involve field trips and/or working within external companies.

You will be assessed through mix of written and practical coursework, with regular feedback. There will be assessment points of project work conducted by academics, industrial professionals and peers.

Our innovative programme is aimed at graduates with a fashion, textiles, design or business degree who wish to gain management knowledge, with the aim to become a manager within this sector. It will also provide a suitable progression route for those who have worked in the industry but want to improve their employment prospects to get to a higher level, as well as for those preparing for PhD study.

You will learn from a range of expert staff about the management practices which are specific to the fashion and textiles business, as well as the inclusion of fashion marketing and promotion techniques, and brand management theories. You will graduate with an advanced understanding of the global fashion industry.

Teaching usually consists of one hour lectures followed by one or two-hour seminars or tutorials for each module. You will also be expected to conduct a substantial amount of self-directed learning, which is important for you to contextualise your studies and to broaden your knowledge. The Fashion Management with Marketing MA is a theoretical programme and assessments are mostly by the submission of fully referenced and structured reports. Presentations are also fundamental as an opportunity for you to present your work to others either for assessment or within a scheduled class activity. One module includes the formulation of a weekly blog for you to keep abreast of topical issues. You will also be required to submit a project proposal which will act as your plan for future research, especially for the dissertation.

The fashion and textile business is highly competitive and we encourage you to develop networking opportunities by becoming a student member of trade associations and to engage in conferences and seminars delivered by industry members.
We expect you to be proactive and attend presentations provided by visitors from the fashion and textiles business to the university, as extra curricula activity. Teaching staff come from a range of art and design disciplines, contributing to their own areas of expertise. Throughout the programme the curriculum is also enhanced by visiting lectures from a variety of business experiences.

Outcomes could be related to design, styling, forecasting and prediction, fashion promotion and consultancy, visual merchandising, art direction, publishing or pursuing further postgraduate study. You will be encouraged to develop design content that allows you to explore alternative ways of engaging with fashion and textile audiences. The course will emphasise the importance of being digitally articulate; you are welcome to combine this with traditional media and design processes.

Design Network

Based in the heart of the School of Art, MA/MFA Textiles for Fashion is part of an innovative design network — a community of staff and students exploring design ideas in a discursive, cross-disciplinary studio environment. Critically informed practical designers, the group works experimentally, inspired by new insights and possibilities.

While studying towards a particular qualification at MA/MFA level, students experience their subject in the broader context of contemporary design practice.

Specialist Environment

Dedicated spaces for the postgraduate community have been developed to enable the postgraduate community to flourish. These spaces, for thinking and practice, are located centrally within the School of Art, allowing easy access to an extensive range of workshops where the combination of traditional and state of the art equipment opens up a world of exciting possibilities.

Course Content

The MA Design: Textiles for Fashion is made up of four units totalling 180 credits.

The programme is designed to help you acclimatise to the challenges of MA level research and practice, enabling you to identify and describe a clear direction for your postgraduate design study.

You will be encouraged to develop design propositions that encompass key design issues and have complexity and ambition, taking full consideration of the relative contextual drivers.

You will also be encouraged and supported to extend your experience in the professional sphere. either through a practical project, research context, exchange, work experience, or other negotiated professional set of interactions with an external partner, groups of students and creative industry.

Towards the end of the programme you will undertake a major project to consolidate your past research and practice into fully realised collections, pieces, proposals, business plans, or exhibitions – whatever means is appropriate to the work. You will also have developed a strategy for the continuation of your practice located and contextualised to the profession or discipline.

If you choose to progress to MFA Design: Textiles For Fashion award you will study a further two units of 60 credits each.

This route is focused on the continuation of your practice aligned to the research and selection of appropriate public or professional venues and platforms to disseminate a significant body of work. You will be required to produce work for a public audience in the most relevant and appropriate form along with any implicit publicity and dissemination material.

The textiles industry is continually evolving. Developing new products that meet the needs of a changing market demands a combination of technology and design technology. This programme will give you access to the latest developments across the textile industry to equip you for these challenges.

You’ll receive training in key skills including laboratory practice, problem solving, and reasoning, and you’ll undertake a substantial research dissertation. In addition, you’ll have the chance to specialise in either textile technology or textile design technology, depending on your own interests and career plans. A variety of optional modules will also give you the chance to learn about topics such as medical textiles, or fashion and sustainability.

Taught by experts in one of the UK’s major hubs for textile research, this programme will help you gain the specialist knowledge and skills to build a career in a fast-paced and challenging industry.

Accreditation

The course is accredited by the Society of Dyers and Colourists as being equivalent to its ASDC examinations leading to Chartered Colourist (CCol) status. It is also accredited by The Textile Institute at Associate level (CText ATI), this demonstrates a good broad knowledge of textiles and its application, and allows you to apply for Licentiateship (LTI) upon graduation, and Associateship (CText ATI) after one year in industry.

Course content

Everyone studies the same compulsory modules throughout the programme, which allow you to become a confident researcher and give you experience of practical lab work in Semester 2. You’ll apply the knowledge and skills that you have gained throughout the course to a substantial piece of independent research, which you’ll submit by the end of the programme in September.

You’ll also have the chance to specialise in the aspects of textiles that interest you by selecting the appropriate pathway.

Textile Design Technology pathway

In the modules on this pathway you’ll learn how to view technology through the eyes of both the designer and the technologist. You’ll gain understanding of how to manipulate technology to design and produce new products and how to maintain and/or improve the desirability of current products.

Textile Technology pathway

You will gain in-depth knowledge of advanced textile technology, textile processes and quality management together with the science, technology and testing of functional textile materials, product development, coloration and finishing processes, medical textiles, nonwovens and performance clothing.

If you choose to study part-time, you’ll study over a longer period and take fewer modules in each year.

Moreover, you could work in various textile industries in managerial positions including the retail and supply chain management with major clothing companies and their suppliers.

The Textile Technology pathway will allow you to gain the skills to pursue a career in any of the following fields: technical consultancy; education and training; and academic research in technical textiles. You may also be employed as a product development technologist in specialist fields such as medical textiles, geotextiles and civil engineering materials, aerospace and transport engineering materials, and sport and performance clothing.

The course combines intensive, studio-based projects with design research, as well as furthering your understanding and working knowledge of the techniques and processes specific to your chosen field of fashion and textile design. You’ll also learn to consider your design practice in terms of the technological, social, critical and ecological issues that influence fashion and textile design, while extending your understanding of business and entrepreneurship through industry briefs and external projects.

You’ll have the opportunity to develop advanced research skills and explore issues related to design practice, including new technology, globalisation and sustainability. This will be informed by your work with academics, practitioners and experts in the field of fashion design and textile design.

We use a broad range of teaching and learning strategies, including lectures, seminars and studio practice. You’ll take part in presentations, group activities, study groups and individual tutorials to discuss, debate and critique your work alongside your peers. You’ll work in our specialist workshops that include digital print and CAD facilities, knit, weave and print equipment, fashion sewing and pattern-making resources and an extensive specialist art and design library.

This programme combines strategic business design, fashion enterprise and social impact to help you become a successful fashion business innovator.

Run by the School of Design and Leeds Enterprise Centre, Leeds University Business School, the programme allows you to view the fashion industry from social and cultural as well as commercial perspectives.

Along with concepts such as consumer behaviour, supply chain structures, branding and marketing, you’ll also study the principles of business and entrepreneurship and how they relate to social enterprise. You’ll also address the challenges of sustainability.

You’ll mix design, business and market-centred innovation to gain a broad base of skills to thrive in a complex, fast-paced and rapidly evolving industry.

Specialist facilities

We have plenty of facilities to help you make the most of your time at Leeds. You will be able to develop your practice in well-equipped studios and purpose-built computer clusters so you can build your skills on both PC and Mac. There is also a computer-aided design (CAD) suite with access to the latest design software and some of the latest design technology, such as digital printing and laser cutting facilities, clothing engineering and colour analysis/prediction labs.

We also have an impressive range of resources you can use for research. We house the M&S Company Archive including documents, advertising, photos, films, clothing and merchandise from throughout Marks & Spencer’s history, offering a fascinating insight into the changing nature of branding and advertising over time. Course content

From the very start of the programme you’ll develop a broad base of knowledge. You’ll explore the concepts of entrepreneurship, enterprise and social enterprise as well as different ethical, social and sustainable approaches. You’ll study the challenges faced by social enterprises today and even the process of setting up a new business.

At the same time, you’ll learn about consumer behaviour and the fashion marketing cycle. You’ll research and develop prototype garments to explore how innovative design ideas can meet the challenges of sustainability and ethics, or make the most of emerging technologies.

In addition, you can tailor your degree to suit your interests and career plans with a choice of optional modules on topics such as fashion photography, textile design, fashion industry analysis and sustainability. You will be presented with a range of research methods in cultural studies to develop research skills by applying them in your independent Masters project, through discussion with the tutors and potential supervisors.

Your independent project can be developed as a traditional dissertation on a fashion related topic of your choice, or a more creative based Professional and Contextual Studies project. In the contextual route you’ll research and develop your own design solution – which you’ll exhibit at the end of the year – supported by case studies and other independent work.

This course offers ambitious individuals the opportunity to become designers, designer-makers or textile artists, either within the professional industries or to set up small businesses independently or in small teams.

The programme of study allows you to freely develop creative design practice and valuable marketing and business skills, building comprehensive understanding, vision and direction.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

The course is developed through seminars, lectures, tutorials, visiting speakers, group critiques, market research and personal research. You will be introduced to research skills and methods, product development, design management and methods, with marketing and business skills. The emphasis of the course is learning how best to present ideas, and where and how to place them in the market.

Students develop and propose a personal route of study and explore and research an area of textiles in knit, print, weave, or embroidery for fashion or interiors, textile art, or in fashion design.

You are encouraged to trial a product in the market either through first hand experience, or through working with studios and agents for designers, shops and craft markets (for designer makers), or with galleries or public spaces (for textile artists).

MODULES

In the first trimester, you'll study Research Methodologies. This introduces generic methodologies and considers subject specific data retrieval analysis and evaluation techniques. You'll also study The Development of Product, Market Research and Product Ideas.

In the second trimester, you'll study Marketing skills. This about developing relevant professional skills and an understanding of marketing requirements for textile designers, makers and artists. You'll also study other modules such as Product Sampling and Development and Research.

The final trimester involves a practice-based Master's Project. This is about bringing ideas to a professional conclusion often in the form of an exhibition of finished wok and supporting promotional materials.

TEACHING METHODS

The course is developed through seminars, lectures, tutorials, visiting speakers, group critiques, market research and personal research.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The PG Cert is assessed by studio exhibition and/or portfolio presentation with a marketing assignment.

The PG Dip involves a written report including market analysis of your chosen product field. Practical work is presented by studio work and/or portfolio and an evaluative report.

For the MA you will present a cohesive body of creative work, supported by an extended report.
