Introduction

The course situates fashion photography within a range of social, cultural and theoretical models of practice and dissemination. Students develop significant project work - based on personal, professional and collaborative initiatives - that comes to define new possibilities of fashion photography and its reach.

Content

MA Fashion Photography relates directly to its philosophy and structure and remains based essentially on practice, as opposed to theory.

The course explores the rhetoric of fashion photographic production and contextualises theory and practice within fine art, popular culture and mass media. Through photographic practice, you will examine social, cultural and critical issues involved in the practice of fashion photography and the impact and construction of the fashion image as a spectacle. In broad terms, it is a multidisciplinary framework for independent study leading to an original body of photographic or written work proposed and negotiated by you.

As a student of MA Fashion Photography, you’ll build upon your existing fashion and photography knowledge to identify, develop and manage a Masters project.

Throughout the course you’ll have access to UCA’s state of the art photography and participate in a variety of lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops, with regular off-campus visits to shoots and exhibitions.

Our MA Fashion Photography course offers you the opportunity to develop your practical fashion photography skills whilst giving you a solid grounding in critical thinking and theory.

Your studies will be supported by a number of internationally renowned staff in a department that encourages experimentation. This will enable you to establish yourself as a rounded professional who can formulate ideas in a sophisticated framework whilst also being able to communicate to others, both visually and verbally.

You’ll build a portfolio of skills and knowledge that will give you a strong grounding in fashion business practices and the application of innovative thinking in a commercial context.

This new MA builds on the success of the BA (Hons) Fashion Management & Marketing course at UCA Epsom and provides a learning environment where you can develop both creative and strategic skills in fashion business, management and marketing.

You’ll be taught the core principles of fashion business and management through a range of approaches, including lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops, and will undertake both formative and summative assessment including reflective personal blogs and journals.

The course will support you in developing your practice through relevant research, a deep understanding of how the fashion industry operates, and engagement with global fashion brands, in order to plan and produce a major project that is unique to you.

Running throughout the course is a strong emphasis on both independent research and participatory group work. If you’re a full time student, you’ll have scheduled teaching for up to two days a week, as well as access to workshops and studios for a further three days (as agreed with your tutor). The retail workforce is projected to grow between 2013 and 2020, with job opportunities expected to increase for managerial positions in particular (Prospects, 2015). This unique degree programme will help you to capitalise on the growth, developing key skills that visual merchandising and product buying employers are seeking.

The programme -

With increasing competition in the retail sector, fashion merchandisers play a vital role in transforming ordinary store environments into exciting retail experiences. Students studying on Southampton Solent’s unique fashion merchandise management programme will undertake in-depth study of visual merchandising, retail design and fashion buying – delving into the psychological and cultural factors that influence consumer spending.

The curriculum also covers technical innovation and the place of technology in the modern retail environment. These contemporary innovations are examined alongside retail design, visual merchandising, in-store branding and the benefits of customer interaction.

Students can get involved in retail activities at Re:So, Solent’s student-run high-street store. Re:So stocks a range of fashion and craft products produced by our creative students, making it the ideal place to get hands-on visual merchandising experience. The store’s upper floor ‘learning zone’ has previously hosted guest speakers from the fashion industry, workshops, photo-shoots and exhibitions – all with an emphasis on developing student retail, enterprise and employability skills.

The course concludes with a final master’s project. This is a chance for students to specialise in an area that suits their unique career ambitions, applying the skills that they have learnt throughout the course. Project supervisors are chosen based on the topic of the dissertation, ensuring that students have one-to-one access to expert support.

Overview

This dynamic new course will prepare you for the world of contemporary, global fashion design, improving your professional skills, your academic understanding and your industry knowledge.

You’ll develop a comprehensive understanding of the international fashion world, and the business-led factors that influence professional practice.

Our course mixes traditional and experimental fashion design processes with theory and practical work. This will encourage you to think about important issues and future trends in the fashion industry and how you could adapt or improve upon your design, styling, marketing or promotional work. For example, you might explore relationships between your design process, marketing strategy and psychological theories. Or you might look at the connections between mathematics and pattern-cutting; or sustainable design and production processes.

We'll investigate different markets and consumers, too. Having learned more about people's wants and needs, you'll use your insight to create innovative designs, along with branding and promotional strategies.

Throughout the course you'll be working closely with other students. Together, we'll share and debate our ideas and working practices, and learn to critically analyse our work.

Your studies will take place over three trimesters in a single calendar year.

Cambridge School of Art has been inspiring creativity since 1858 when it was opened by John Ruskin.

Engaging with current debates surrounding contemporary practice and with the state-of-the-art facilities, Cambridge School of Art houses light, bright studios, industry-standard film and photographic facilities, and 150-year-old printing presses alongside dedicated Apple Mac suites. Whether you are a recent graduate or a professional in fashion and related industries, such as marketing, journalism, photography, film and pattern cutting, Fashion Innovation and Realisation MA allows you to advance your current skills and expertise and engage in an advanced level of fashion-related academic study.

This flexible, modular programme will allow you to develop your skills, experience and expertise through experimental, innovative practice and fashion theory. The programme then switches to ‘realisation’ modules, achieved through collaborative and interdisciplinary practice, and a studio culture supported by lectures, seminars and visiting lecturers. Wherever possible, you will be able to access undergraduate inductions and basic workshops to revisit skills or investigate new technologies for your study.

Your studies will culminate in the development and presentation of a final major project where you will present the outcomes of your individual learning plan.

Fashion is a mature subject within the Liverpool School of Art and Design and you will have access to the latest digital equipment as well as traditional fashion techniques that are seeing a re-emergence in the fashion sector. The facilities available in our John Lennon Art and Design Building will provide all the equipment you need to develop, create and photograph work.

Our MA Photography course approaches photography as an expanded visual discipline. You'll be encouraged to confidently produce complex and extended photographic projects and engage with experimental and speculative approaches to making.

We offer a dynamic and exciting environment for studying the critical theory of photography, and this course engages with practices of reading and writing about the image. MA Photography also pays close attention to the dissemination, exhibition and publication of photographic work.

We provide specialist digital and analogue facilities for large-format colour and black-and-white exhibition prints.

Our course offers a considered balance of support that develops practical skills and fosters a high standard of diverse critical approaches. You'll take risks, explore and develop your interest, and exchange, debate and discuss ideas. You'll respond to the diverse field of contemporary photography and explore practices of representation that engage with the still and the moving image, as well as performance and installation.

Your studies will be supported by a number of internationally renowned staff in a department that encourages experimentation. This will enable you to establish yourself as a rounded professional who can formulate ideas in a sophisticated framework whilst also being able to communicate to others, both visually and verbally.

Candidates holding a first-level academic diploma or BA degree, or about to graduate and with a knowledge of the English language (IELTS 5.0 academic or equivalent certificate).

Characterised by a multi-disciplinary, holistic ethos, MA Fashion Media Production aims to stimulate and cultivate fashion communicators of the twenty first century. Reflecting a shift in the fashion industries demands for multi-skilled creatives, this course bridges a gap between primary disciplines such as journalism and photography as well as encompassing digital and new media practices to encourage reflective practice, fresh responses and innovative solutions within Fashion Media Production.

As future fashion podcasters, film-makers, web-site editors or creators, fashion forecasters, broadcasters, stylists or sound artists, you will work with a repertoire of communicative and interpretive tools including text, image, sound, film and digital technology to question industry conventions, processes and practices.

MA Fashion Media Production will be an industry facing course and aims to incorporate a range of professional practitioners within its units. You will be encouraged to combine your course with industry placements appropriate to your study.

Industry has been consulted on the development of this course. An industry consultation panel, consisted of e-journalists Hilary Alexander and Marianne Buckley.

Develop your existing knowledge and experience as a fashion designer, exploiting our significant research expertise to enhance your own design and research skills to a new level.

We place emphasis on personal research, giving you the chance to develop your own interests and ideas in a challenging and supportive environment. Our aim is to help you to become a creative, imaginative and versatile fashion designer who can operate independently or as a member of a design team.

You can pursue a wide area of investigation when developing your designs. Your course tutors include fashion design specialists in areas including innovative pattern cutting, CAD and fashion technology, fashion marketing, fashion entrepreneurship, fashion craft and sustainability. As well as helping develop your creative design skills, they also help you to identify and shape your future career direction.

There are opportunities to participate in study trips and visits to design conferences and debates.

Project-based course

You choose your own project content and this is supported by lectures and seminars dealing with professional practice issues and reviewing your progress. You also take part in regular group and individual tutorials.

Your final major project is the culmination of your research and studio-based design practice. It demonstrates that you can deal with difficult contemporary questions and take a leading role as a design professional.

We have professionally equipped design studios and fashion workshops that house digital garment manufacturing equipment, pattern-cutting software and flat-bed cutting equipment. As well as specialist fashion design facilities, you can a use the University’s wider creative facilities including professional photography studios, printing facilities, and laser cutting technology.

You can also access our award-winning learning centre featuring a specialist art, design and media library and extensive online resources.

MA and MFA study

MA and MFA students complete the same modules during the course except that MFA students complete an extra project module. The MFA project encourages you to develop professional skills that help you to identify, instigate, and deliver projects with external partners, such as communities, galleries or businesses. You find a project partner, agree a brief and then deliver the project to a professional standard.

We are normally asked to shortlist applicants before recommending a small number to apply. If this happens, we consider your interview, portfolio of work, academic qualifications and learning aims. We aim to pick people whose abilities and aims are relevant for the company and who are most likely to be successful in a competitive interview.

This course is part of the Sheffield Institute of Arts (SIA), an amazing, diverse community of makers – where staff, students and partners work as equals to deliver real innovation and creativity. SIA opened in 1843 and is one of the UK's oldest Art and Design Schools. We have recently moved into the Head Post Office, a redesigned Grade II listed building. It includes state-of-the-art workshops which provide you with a unique studio-based learning environment in the heart of the creative community.

This is a one-year, industry-led programme, which gives you the opportunity to develop your specialist knowledge of contemporary fashion marketing from a managerial perspective. Developed in conjunction with industry specialists to inform innovative and maintain contemporary content.

You will develop the ability to strategically plan and instigate complex marketing campaigns. Throughout your studies you will gain an understanding of the development of creative and sophisticated visual marketing methods for promoting fashion. You will work within a commercial context to address pressing new agendas surrounding fashion marketing, such as fashion consumption, ethics, sustainability, consumerism, economic and political influences.

Briefs will be informed by industry, spanning print, new media, experiential events, new emerging technical environments and media relations. The course cultivates intellectual and analytical approaches to your research, which will enhance your managerial skills for increased employability.

MA Photography provides an intensive environment for the advanced study of photographic practice. The course aims to stimulate and engender innovative approaches to individual practice, celebrating the authorial voice alongside the development of critically informed perspectives.

Study is practice-based and students are encouraged to develop a deep understanding of appropriate professional and commercial contexts for their work. NUA has gained a strong reputation in the field of advertising, fashion and editorial photography and is strongly linked to industry and professional bodies including the Association of Photographers.

Taught components will consider a range of contextual and theoretical aspects of photography including collaboration, aesthetic/anti aesthetic, technological determinism and the impact of emerging technologies. A series of seminars and workshops will encourage you to explore the complex relationship between individual approaches to practice and client-led work.

With access to outstanding studios and digital darkrooms, you will be encouraged to develop a strong individual voice within your visual practice, and to explore the possibilities for moving image within the context of contemporary photography. In addition, you will have further opportunity to engage with industry professionals through a professional mentoring scheme.

Creative thinking and innovation are at the core of the MA philosophy and you will engage with students from across the postgraduate community to share opportunities and debate contemporary issues.

We encourage our students to engage in critical discourse through course specific seminars, lectures and critiques; larger NUA symposia such as Dialogues (Fine Art) and Cowbird (Design); and attendance at national and international exhibitions and conferences.

Digital Darkroom

24 workstations. Software includes Aperture, Capture One and Adobe Creative Suites. Data projection is installed for reviewing and critiquing work. High quality flat bed transparency/reflective scanners are installed, as well as a photographic quality Inkjet printer.

Photography Studios

Equipped with a range of professional studio equipment from  tabletop still life work to full-length model photography. The studios include a full blackout studio with flexible options for configuring the layout to suit the varied requirement of individual and taught study. Professional camera kits with specialist lenses; medium format digital camera kits and a full range of professional studio lighting, camera supports and accessories are provided for use in the studio or on location.

General Technical Sessions

Optional software inductions available to all students introduce you to a wide range of creative possibilities and output options.

Media Resource Centre

For digital cameras, tripods, 35mm DSLRs, 35mm film cameras and lighting equipment.

NUA Library

The largest specialist are, design and media collection in the East of England including 32,000 books, 1,300 journal subscriptions and 3,000 DVDs.

Applications

The offer of entry onto a Masters Degree (MA) is based on an expectation that you have the potential to fulfil the aims of the course of study and achieve the standard required to successfully complete the award. Entrants should normally have achieved a BA (Hons)/BSc Degree of 2:1 or above (or its equivalent), in a subject related to your proposed course of study.

Applicants who hold a Degree from another discipline may also be considered for entry, subject to the submission of a satisfactory portfolio of art, design or media-related work in support of their application.

The majority of applicants to courses at NUA will be invited to attend an interview. This provides an invaluable chance to meet face-to-face and is the major factor in determining the success of your submission. The interview is an opportunity to assess your work and the suitability of your application and also provides you with a chance to assess NUA’s staff, campus and facilities and ask questions. The key focus of your application process is on your portfolio. Some courses may require additional entry requirements or passes in specific subjects.
