The Postgraduate Certificate Fashion: Buying and Merchandising is a fashion business course with a vocational focus on buying and merchandising. It combines a post graduate level academic experience with the vocational realities of retailer buying and merchandising operations. The course covers a range of vocational knowledge and skills for students seeking a career in fashion buying and merchandising, and develops knowledge of both theoretical and practical issues relevant to current practice in the UK buying and merchandising sector. This is integrated with practical professional skills in communication, negotiation and presentation. Distinctive features of the course are the strong links with fashion buying and merchandising offices in the UK and the opportunity afforded by the practical emphasis on skills negotiation in the final project.

The course is designed for graduates aiming at a first career position in fashion buying or merchandising but who need to supplement their first degree with a more relevant academic qualification. The course may also be suitable as a preparation for higher level postgraduate study in related subject areas.

The Postgraduate Certificate Fashion: Buying and Merchandising course is based at High Holborn, adjacent to Lincoln’s Inn Fields. Other green spaces in the area include Gray’s Inn Gardens and Coram’s Fields. Situated nearby are Sir John Soane’s Museum in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, the Foundling Museum in Brunswick Square, and the British Museum in Bloomsbury. Markets worth visiting are the weekday lunchtime markets in Leather Lane and Exmouth Market. Over recent decades the fashion and textile industries has been making changes; responding to enviromental and social needs; publishing corporate social reports and working with industry bodies and NGOs. Yet the Rana Plaza disaster in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2013 was tragedy for the workers, their families, the country and the industries, and an imperative for new thinking, new practice, and fresh ethics. It is a horrific milestone for fashion manufacture, communication, consumer awareness and industry responsibilities. The industries are now reaching out to governments, NGOs, charities, unions and radical thinkers for advice and support. They are accountable for their current and future ethics. Without doubt it is time for change in which education is a crucial contributor to the new solutions, and alternative futures for the industries.

The new MSc Ethics in Fashion (See http://www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/prog/msc-ethics-in-fashion/ ) is a research led, taught programme, focussed on analysing and understanding the industry, whilst mapping the changes in practice, monitoring the voices and diversity of stakeholders in the supply-chain. The programme offers a chance for ethically aware graduates and established professionals to refresh and extend their knowledge and skillset. An escalating need for an Ethics in Fashion programme has been identified, and Heriot-Watt University is in a unique position with subject specific research faculty, global industry links, outstanding fashion and textiles facilities and an enviable pastoral location, with strong transport connections.

The taught programme has been created for those wanting to work, or already working in the fashion and textiles industries, in design, sourcing management, buying, journalism and corporate affairs. The qualification provides a set of fresh perspectives and insights for an existing first degree qualification, or relevant experience in any of the above areas or similar for those wanting to be part of the dynamic changing industries.

Industry links

The School of Textiles and Design, and the research staff have strong global industry and NGO links in design, corporate social responsibility reporting and corporate affairs, social enterprise. In addition teaching staff are Fellows of the Fellowship of 500, in the Ethical Fashion Forum. There are both courses, and research opportunities to work with local and international industry.

The programme has been designed to utilise selected core postgraduate courses offered within the School and introducing courses specific to Ethics in Fashion, thus encouraging inter-disciplinary participation and discourse, and membership of the a growing research community.

Objectives

- Analyse the ethics in supply-chain practice

Assessment

Students are assessed through a combination of individual and group written course work, and projects and the Masters dissertation. Emphasis is placed on rigorous academic standards as well as acquiring and developing a range of transferable industry skills and individual development. Assessment exercises can therefore include making effective visual and oral presentations, writing reports and as well as team and group work.

Overview

This dynamic new course will prepare you for the world of contemporary, global fashion design, improving your professional skills, your academic understanding and your industry knowledge.

You’ll develop a comprehensive understanding of the international fashion world, and the business-led factors that influence professional practice.

Our course mixes traditional and experimental fashion design processes with theory and practical work. This will encourage you to think about important issues and future trends in the fashion industry and how you could adapt or improve upon your design, styling, marketing or promotional work. For example, you might explore relationships between your design process, marketing strategy and psychological theories. Or you might look at the connections between mathematics and pattern-cutting; or sustainable design and production processes.

We'll investigate different markets and consumers, too. Having learned more about people's wants and needs, you'll use your insight to create innovative designs, along with branding and promotional strategies.

Throughout the course you'll be working closely with other students. Together, we'll share and debate our ideas and working practices, and learn to critically analyse our work.

Your studies will take place over three trimesters in a single calendar year.

Our course will equip you with the skills, knowledge and professional understanding you need to work as a fashion designer. You’ll also be well-prepared for related roles, such as styling and promotion, brand and marketing management, PR management/press, fashion production, buying or trend forecasting.

Learning & Teaching

The course is delivered with a mixture of lectures and seminars. Many of the assessments will be based on real world cases and therefore specialist guest speakers and visits to businesses will also form part of the learning journey. At Master’s level, self-management and independent research and study is expected with students being directed and encouraged to deepen their understanding of particular areas of Marketing. Moodle is used as an interactive VLE but the development of a learning community is particularly prevalent at Cardiff Metropolitan with excellent student support. 

Assessment

Assessment on the programme is mixed and will include a variety of formats. You are assessed throughout the course on the basis of coursework and presentations, many of which are focused on real-life cases studies.

• Contour Fashion – specialising in the study of intimate apparel, including jersey wear, lingerie, swimwear, corsetry, loungewear and bra design

• Fashion Design – with the opportunity to specialise in womenswear, menswear and fashion knitwear

• Footwear Design and Accessories – with options including women’s, men’s and children’s footwear and accessories for sport, leisure or fashion

Prior to enrolling onto the course you will choose one of the pathways which will provide the focus of your design practice. Contemporary Issues for Business and Society

This core module reflects the fact that organisations do not operate in a vacuum: they are both shaped by and themselves also shape the geo-political, economic, social and technological environments in which they operate. Understanding the interaction between organisations and their wider contexts is essential to effective management and responsible leadership. This module is designed to equip students with the information and analytical skills required to critically reflect upon some of the most significant issues which pose challenges to business managers and organisational leaders in the modern world.

Consumer-Led Fashion Marketing

This module is designed to provide an in-depth and critical understanding of consumer-led marketing practices. Students are introduced to the concept of customer insight and its role in marketing decision making. A range of models of consumer behaviour, including consumer value, are examined in the context of strategic decision making and relationship building.

Strategic Decisions in the International Fashion Marketplace

Core to organisational success is strategic planning, implementation and evaluation. This module considers the challenges facing organisations in the contemporary marketplace and explores the creation and consideration of solutions that arise from such. Adopting a marketing planning perspective this module will equip students with the necessary tools, skills and insights to generate a comprehensive, cohesive and congruent marketing plan.

Digital Fashion Branding and Delivery

The module explores the role of technology and the creative process in the development of brands. Focusing on the emergence and growth of virtual realities and e-communications, students will examine how the creation and delivery of a new brand concept through creative technologies represents a transformational shift in the entrepreneurship, commerce and professional practice of the contemporary marketer.

Fashion Buying, Merchandising and Distribution

This module provides students with a critical understanding of the buying, merchandising and distribution functions with a fashion organisaton. The associated management processes are explored in detail, including analysis of market trends, product concept, sourcing, buying, merchandising, logistics and distribution channel decisions. The aim being to furnish students with the ability to critically examine the inter-relatonships that exist between these different processes.

Research Methods

Develops your advanced skills related to a range of research methods needed for academic and practical research at a Masters Level.

Dissertation

The research project can assume one of 3 forms: An Applied Research Project, an Inquiry Project or a Business Consultancy Project. The Applied Research project involves collection of secondary and primary data. The Management Inquiry Project is secondary data based and can assume the form of an exploration of an aspect of the development of global trends in the relevant business literature and an assessment of its implications for local practice. The Management Consultancy project is normally primary data based and requires the student to adopt the role of a consultant.

The fashion industry is a vibrant and challenging business environment. This Fashion Management with Marketing MA is designed to accommodate a range of career opportunities within this sector, providing you with an advanced understanding of the global fashion industry.

Our innovative programme is aimed at graduates with a fashion, textiles, design or business degree who wish to gain management knowledge, with the aim to become a manager within this sector. It will also provide a suitable progression route for those who have worked in the industry but want to improve their employment prospects to get to a higher level, as well as for those preparing for PhD study.

You will learn from a range of expert staff about the management practices which are specific to the fashion and textiles business, as well as the inclusion of fashion marketing and promotion techniques, and brand management theories. You will graduate with an advanced understanding of the global fashion industry.

Teaching usually consists of one hour lectures followed by one or two-hour seminars or tutorials for each module. You will also be expected to conduct a substantial amount of self-directed learning, which is important for you to contextualise your studies and to broaden your knowledge. The Fashion Management with Marketing MA is a theoretical programme and assessments are mostly by the submission of fully referenced and structured reports. Presentations are also fundamental as an opportunity for you to present your work to others either for assessment or within a scheduled class activity. One module includes the formulation of a weekly blog for you to keep abreast of topical issues. You will also be required to submit a project proposal which will act as your plan for future research, especially for the dissertation.

Content

MA Fashion Cultures offers a unique experience in fashion education at postgraduate level.

The course has two specific but interrelated pathways: History and Culture; and Fashion / Film. On this course you will have the opportunity to study fashion and dress within its historical, social and cultural contexts. A dynamic in-depth exploration of theoretical and methodological perspectives will give you a grounding in the history of fashion and an underpinning of social and cultural theory for both pathways. You will then undertake more specialised study on your chosen pathway. On the History and Culture pathway you will investigate fashion as object, representation and practice through an interdisciplinary approach from both historical and contemporary perspectives. On Fashion/Film you will investigate the ongoing changing relationship between fashion, costume and forms of film as well as the relationship between cinema and consumption within a global context. While you will choose one pathway, you will have the opportunity to attend the lectures for the other pathway if you wish to, so you can gain the fullest possible understanding of a variety of disciplines and their impact upon visual and material cultures.

The pathways are led by renowned experts in their respective fields, and they are supported by research fellows, professors, authors, curators and historians who contribute to the course. Based in one of fashion’s most important cities, our students benefit from access to the special collections and archives of many leading institutions in London, including the V and A, Museum of London and the British Film Institute. You will also have the opportunity to work with other graduate students from the Culture and Curation Programme on some units of the course.

We attract students from a wide variety of academic and industry backgrounds, some of whom have completed theory-based first degrees, while others come with practice-based backgrounds. After completing their Masters studies, some students from both former courses have progressed to higher level research degrees, and others have established themselves in a number of related fields including curation, visual merchandising, styling, archiving, fashion buying, lecturing and research.
