Fashion and Textiles aims to develop the creative process for designers in conjunction with valuable marketing and business skills. The course is aimed at ambitious designers, designer-makers or textile artists who wish to develop opportunities within the profession and who may wish to set up on their own or with others in small teams.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

The course is offered in both full and part-time modes. It is normally one year (3 trimesters) in duration in full-time mode or 6 trimesters in part-time mode. The first two trimesters comprise taught sessions and assessed projects, while the Master’s Project in the final part of the course is by negotiated project only. Completion of the first 2 modules on the course lead to the award of the Postgraduate Certificate, and completion of the first 4 modules leads to the award of the Postgraduate Diploma. Subsequent completion of the MA double module leads to the award of MA Design: Fashion and Textiles.

You will be introduced to research skills and methods, product development, design management and methods, with marketing and business skills. The emphasis of the course is learning how best to present ideas, and where and how to place them in the market.

The course is developed through seminars, lectures, tutorials, visiting speakers, group critiques, market research and personal research. You are encouraged to trial a product in the market. This may be through first hand experience, or through working with studios and agents for designers, shops and craft markets (for designer makers), or with galleries or public spaces (for textile artists). Students propose a route of study through the course to explore and research a chosen area of textiles in knit, print, weave, or embroidery for fashion or interiors, or in fashion design.

MODULES

Research Methodologies - Part One introduces generic methodologies with Part Two considering subject specific data retrieval analysis and evaluation techniques.

The Development of Product, Market Research and Product Ideas - Developing ideas technically and aesthetically, in-depth investigation into techniques and researching to market.

Marketing Skills - Marketing and Business skills – developing an understanding of marketing requirements for textile designers and artists.

Product Sampling and Development and Research - Initial product sampling techniques and investigation. Developing and progressing ideas to enable the creation of new products. Range planning.

TEACHING METHODS AND RESOURCES

The first trimester (PGCert) consists of two modules. Research Methodologies consists of a taught programme of lectures, seminars, group critiques, and assignments. You will also negotiate a programme of study for the Product, Market Research and Product Ideas module. The emphasis at this level is on ideas. During the second trimester (PGDip) you will take two further modules: Marketing Skills comprises of lectures, seminars and research; the Development of Product and Product Ideas is negotiated by each student. The final trimester, leading to the MA, involves a negotiated study which you will propose. The study will be research based resulting in a body of work for assessment.

Specialist facilities include computer studios with over 70 Macs, as well as flatbed and transparency scanners. There is a recently re-equipped digital media studio. Fashion and Textiles students benefit from specialist studio spaces for both digital and screen printing, knitting, weaving, embroidery, laser cutting and pattern cutting, using the latest digital technology for CAD/CAM. All students have access to workshops in photography, sound and video, etching and litho, as well as the specialist Art and Design library.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The main aim of the course is for students to identify their own employment opportunities. Other possibilities may include textile design, product or fashion design, retail or sales and marketing opportunities, teaching, trend prediction and promotion, or further research in industry or education, and exhibiting in galleries as a textile artist.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The PGCert is assessed by studio exhibition and/or portfolio presentation with a marketing report. The PGDip involves a written report including market analysis of your chosen product field. Practical work is presented by studio work and/or portfolio. For the MA you will present a cohesive body of creative work, supported by written work.

Module Details

The course is offered over one year (full-time) or two years (part-time) and includes:

Research: methodologies, analytical skills, visual analysis, research management and organisation.
Enterprise: business strategy and planning, analytical and entrepreneurial skills, and knowledge. It's specifically and purposefully designed for creative thinkers using innovative and apposite methods of delivery, including an opportunity to work within an established or integrated fashion label within the course itself adopting the Atelier approach.
Concept and Design: brand identity, flexible and future focused market thinking, range planning end user analysis and product development.
Skill and Manufacture: mastering existing skills in a recognisable niche product area through specialist workshops and facilities.
Professional Practice: embedded throughout the programme with high quality visiting lecturers and practitioners alongside the University’s award winning careers department.

Core units comprise:

A Question of Research: 30 credits. This unit provides an introduction to debates and research methods relevant for creative practitioners and your application to a pertinent research question. It also encourages self reflection on the research process.
Fashion/Textile Enterprise: 30 credits. Explore business research strategy and planning, develop analytical and entrepreneurial skills, and become adept at flexible and future focused market thinking.
Fashion/Textile Industry: 60 credits. Work with an established or integrated fashion and textiles label.
Fashion/Textile Major Project: 60 credits. Supervised by Academic and/or Business mentor(s) to undertake an extended self-directed project, informed by research.

Programme Assessment

Teaching methods include a mixture lectures, seminars, group critiques, live projects, workshops, individual tutorials and events. During the final stage of the course, learning becomes more independent and self-managed, making your timetable more flexible.

The learning environment will be primarily studio, seminar room and workshop based but will also involve field trips and/or working within external companies.

You will be assessed through mix of written and practical coursework, with regular feedback. There will be assessment points of project work conducted by academics, industrial professionals and peers.

• Contour Fashion – specialising in the study of intimate apparel, including jersey wear, lingerie, swimwear, corsetry, loungewear and bra design

This innovative and progressive course will give you the opportunity to develop your creative, technical, and critical skills in fashion and textile design, while extending your practice in a conceptual and professional context.

The course combines intensive, studio-based projects with design research, as well as furthering your understanding and working knowledge of the techniques and processes specific to your chosen field of fashion and textile design. You’ll also learn to consider your design practice in terms of the technological, social, critical and ecological issues that influence fashion and textile design, while extending your understanding of business and entrepreneurship through industry briefs and external projects.

You’ll have the opportunity to develop advanced research skills and explore issues related to design practice, including new technology, globalisation and sustainability. This will be informed by your work with academics, practitioners and experts in the field of fashion design and textile design.

We use a broad range of teaching and learning strategies, including lectures, seminars and studio practice. You’ll take part in presentations, group activities, study groups and individual tutorials to discuss, debate and critique your work alongside your peers. You’ll work in our specialist workshops that include digital print and CAD facilities, knit, weave and print equipment, fashion sewing and pattern-making resources and an extensive specialist art and design library.

Our teaching staff are active in professional practice, research and scholarship and are members of research groups covering digital and material arts and sustainable art and design.

When you have completed your course you’ll be able to position yourself for a career in design for fashion, textiles, or related product areas, such as knitwear, performance sportswear or smart textiles for apparel and other uses such as interior design. The Graduate Diploma in Fashion offers a one-year Higher Education programme for international and, for the first time in 2014, graduate students. It aims to produce mature and sophisticated designers equipped to work in and design for the international market.
The course offers students with a background in fashion design or a closely related discipline the opportunity to take a fresh view of their work and their creative direction.

The course’s learning and teaching philosophy emphasises creative freedom and offers you the opportunity to explore and experience London as an international fashion design centre and a rich resource for research, providing invaluable insights into progression to postgraduate study or employment in the International fashion industry.

The learning and teaching are project-based and offer you the freedom to experiment and find or re-define yourselves within a creative environment. The course emphasises breadth as well as depth of research and an innovative approach to design development.

The Graduate Diploma in Fashion begins with staff-directed and / or industry projects aiming to support you in identifying and further developing your strengths and addressing your weaknesses. This enables you to develop your work in consultation with staff on an ongoing basis.

Fundamental to the course is the commitment to support your creative development with appropriate design, technical (pattern cutting / garment construction) and professional skills to help you to take advantage of the benefits and challenges that studying in London provides.

Later projects are negotiated with course staff and self-directed, offering you the opportunity to demonstrate independent learning in the context of your final project.

The curriculum also introduces you to the potential of a range of different approaches to the visual communication and articulation of design ideas. Personal and professional development emphasises the skills and aptitudes required in designing for a specific market, researching and taking account of current trends and, in particular, the personal presentation skills required to support application for entry into postgraduate study and / or employment in the international fashion industry.

You leave the course with a portfolio and realised design work that will effectively support access to postgraduate study and / or entry into employment in the fashion industry.

Over recent decades the fashion and textile industries has been making changes; responding to enviromental and social needs; publishing corporate social reports and working with industry bodies and NGOs. Yet the Rana Plaza disaster in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2013 was tragedy for the workers, their families, the country and the industries, and an imperative for new thinking, new practice, and fresh ethics. It is a horrific milestone for fashion manufacture, communication, consumer awareness and industry responsibilities. The industries are now reaching out to governments, NGOs, charities, unions and radical thinkers for advice and support. They are accountable for their current and future ethics. Without doubt it is time for change in which education is a crucial contributor to the new solutions, and alternative futures for the industries.

The new MSc Ethics in Fashion (See http://www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/prog/msc-ethics-in-fashion/ ) is a research led, taught programme, focussed on analysing and understanding the industry, whilst mapping the changes in practice, monitoring the voices and diversity of stakeholders in the supply-chain. The programme offers a chance for ethically aware graduates and established professionals to refresh and extend their knowledge and skillset. An escalating need for an Ethics in Fashion programme has been identified, and Heriot-Watt University is in a unique position with subject specific research faculty, global industry links, outstanding fashion and textiles facilities and an enviable pastoral location, with strong transport connections.

The taught programme has been created for those wanting to work, or already working in the fashion and textiles industries, in design, sourcing management, buying, journalism and corporate affairs. The qualification provides a set of fresh perspectives and insights for an existing first degree qualification, or relevant experience in any of the above areas or similar for those wanting to be part of the dynamic changing industries.

Industry links

The School of Textiles and Design, and the research staff have strong global industry and NGO links in design, corporate social responsibility reporting and corporate affairs, social enterprise. In addition teaching staff are Fellows of the Fellowship of 500, in the Ethical Fashion Forum. There are both courses, and research opportunities to work with local and international industry.

The programme has been designed to utilise selected core postgraduate courses offered within the School and introducing courses specific to Ethics in Fashion, thus encouraging inter-disciplinary participation and discourse, and membership of the a growing research community.

Objectives

- Analyse the ethics in supply-chain practice
- Speculate on, and develop, effective methods of communicating ethics
- Identify and map outcomes and consequences of unethical and ethical practice
- Speculate and apply new criteria within the supply-chain
- Analyse the motivations and roles of consumers in the ethics discourse and practice
- Identify best practice models across the traditional fashion and textiles industries, social enterprise and non-governmental organisations (NGOs)
- Research independently the role of ethics in fashion practice and theory

Assessment

Students are assessed through a combination of individual and group written course work, and projects and the Masters dissertation. Emphasis is placed on rigorous academic standards as well as acquiring and developing a range of transferable industry skills and individual development. Assessment exercises can therefore include making effective visual and oral presentations, writing reports and as well as team and group work.

This postgraduate course is about leading not following, accepting criticism, learning and moving on. It is not a hobby. It has an international profile second to none.

MA Fashion is offered in four pathways that are interrelated and structured around the core subject of fashion. It is part of the Fashion programme.

With an emphasis on research, market intelligence and industry awareness, MA Fashion believes that truly relevant, innovative design is not purely a creative activity involving designers in the artistic process – it also recognises the ability to analyse markets, the industry and society in general. Designers or journalists must not only be conversant with the broad fashion context; they must also be able to diagnose markets accurately and to communicate with colleagues and management.

MA Fashion emphasises presentation and communication skills. Students must not only create the right product for the market but also be good communicators capable of convincing colleagues that their ideas are based on a mature understanding of markets and competitors.

You’ll get involved in the debates generated by our Professional Speakers Talks, related projects, and the inter-pathway critiques that help you develop your critical and communication skills. These activities, together with the range and reach of staff connections with the industry, bring excitement and breadth to the course.

Structure

MA Fashion lasts 45 weeks full-time, structured in two units over five terms (which may vary in length) commencing in late October.

The Fashion Journalism pathway focuses on writing, editing and digital media. Fashion Communication & Promotion is for innovative image-makers; and Fashion Critical Studies offers an academic approach to the analysis of Fashion.

The MAFC course consists of three specific pathways. While each pathway has a distinct approach to Fashion Communication, cross pathway projects will connect subject specialists into vibrant groups creating challenging and industry relevant experiences.

There are key points in the year when MAFC students will interact with MA Fashion Design students and experience Fashion Communication in a live context. In January and February the build up to the MA Fashion Show at London Fashion Week will provide opportunities to participate in the production and organisation of a fashion show. In May MAFC students can work with BA Fashion students as they present their degree fashion show.

The MAFC course is framed in the highly creative Fashion Programme at Central Saint Martins, but also within an Art School philosophy where other creative disciplines such as Graphic Communication, Architecture, Textiles, Jewellery, Product Design and Fine Art offer debates, collaborations and new approaches to the subject.

Course outline

We actively encourage mixing different approaches, materials and techniques to create innovative fabric, such as print combined with embroidery, with opportunities to utilise laser cutting to create new fabrics and potential applique techniques. Our strong links with traditional Fine Art print techniques allow students to research and explore the graphic and textural potential of these alongside contemporary fashion and textile design.

There will be three studio modules throughout the first two terms. The first will look at researching aspects of fashion textile, experiencing the range of processes and materials available. This will lead to creation of a range of studio project proposals, equipped with a comprehensive understanding of the creative potential within the department. Finally, there will be practical MA Project Module which will culminate in an exhibition of work in an appropriate media.

The course allows great flexibility within the project proposals. These may range from full garment collections to fabric creation for clothing, printed fashion fabrics or accessories.

Graduate destinations

You'll be prepared for a range of careers in fashion and textile design, including working with pattern cutting and pattern design in all garment trades as well as film and theatre costume production. You might wish to enter garment manufacturing or textile fabric design, working in samples for mass manufacture. No matter what you decide to do, from interior surface designs to textile and fashion prints, your qualification will ensure you are ready for it.
