In an era of massive digitalization in which individuals have indirect communications through the intermediary of a screen, it is psychologically reassuring to believe that the construction of one’s style mirrors its representation as an individual. However, just like any other languages, Fashion has a myriad of nuances and facets that render any reading and interpretation much more complex.

The main objective of the MBA in Fashion Business at IFA Paris is to equip its postgraduate students with keys to decipher the ever changing fashion industry. Delivered since 2008, the course has been completely revamped in order to take full advantage of IFA Paris’ heritage and cultural specificities.

The philosophy of the MBA in Fashion Business revolves around 3 pillars:

Discovery:
Students are being immersed in a workshop environment allowing them to get an intensive and practical training based on each development stage of a fashion collection, from inception to commercialization.

Experimentation:
While travelling between IFA’s campus locations (Paris, Istanbul, Bangkok and Shanghai) our students are able to experience first-hand the intrinsic characteristics of emerging and mature markets thanks to IFA Paris learning by doing pedagogy.

Self-affirmation:
The overarching Capstone thesis reflects the students’ commitment to the development of a unique and individual project.

The overall course structure promotes a holistic approach to the fashion industry enabling participants to analyze complex functions. The MBA in Fashion Business is one of the only postgraduate courses that allows its students to understand the integration of Sensorial Marketing within the strategies of international fashion houses.

The development of special seminars in haute couture, fashion trade shows, celebrity endorsements and fashion ethnography are “windows” into unique activities or phenomenon of the fashion industry. From their implication in the organization of fashion related events to the discovery of the inner sanctum of Paris Haute Couture Ateliers, participants will be able to improve their professional portfolio with experiences that will ultimately render their profile more sophisticated and attractive to potential employers.

Finally, from inception to graduation, and regardless of their location, Postgraduate students of IFA Paris will benefit from the support of a unique department called the “Career and Alumni Center”. The industry relation arm of IFA Paris’ academic programs is in charge of organizing bi-weekly guest lectures and field trips to attune our students with the fashion pulse. They will have access to exclusive brand launch events, fashion shows, art exhibitions or professional trade-shows in order to build their own professional network. The Career and Alumni Center accompanies IFA Paris students even after graduation by linking them with its strong alumni network composed of individuals originating from 50 different countries. The key word here is synergy, whereby IFA Paris, its students and its graduates are all major actors in the reshaping of the fashion industry panorama.

Our MBA Courses are structured with the ECTS framework in mind as set by the Bologna Convention. Upon completion of their studies participants will gather a total of 120 ECTS that they will be able to transfer if they wish to further their studies. Our Fashion Business course covers a wide range of modules clustered into five main module groupings:

Marketing and Management:

This grouping encompasses a series of modules that will be sequentially planned based on the structure of a marketing plan. The overall body of knowledge acquired by the students will prepare them to:

Analyze complex marketing challenges based on practical case studies
Allocate resources strategically to achieve pre-determined objectives
Craft brand DNAs allowing for the achievement of a sustainable competitive advantage

Business Issues:

The capacity to listen and interpret markets’ signals is a key component of today’s managers. It needs to be continuously cultivated. Within this module grouping students will discover the idiosyncrasies of the fashion industry from an economic and financial view point.

Distribution and Retail:

The emergence of fast fashion retailing and the exponential growth of online commerce have changed the distribution landscape for fashion houses. This module grouping explores the importance of selecting the right distribution strategies as well as creating a positive shopping environment to achieve an efficient customers’ return rate.


Fashion Environment:

Programs focusing on Fashion Business traditionally put the emphasis on analyzing strategic and marketing challenges. The MBA Fashion Business at IFA incorporates a more creative accent, sourcing inspiration from the school’s roots in Fashion Design. In this module grouping students will learn and experience first-hand about the different steps involved in the creation of a cohesive collection.

Fashion Lifestyle:

From observing the development of a Haute Couture Collection in a studio in Paris to taking an ethnographic trip in the Northern Tribes of China to understand their contribution to the contemporary fashion scene, this series of seminars comprised within the “Fashion Lifestyle” module grouping will allow our students to experience specific aspects of the fashion industry in a workshop like environment.

The idea of a Fashion Business Management MA was formulated in discussion with industry leaders. Building on the success of our Fashion Merchandise Management courses and in particular the close collaboration with industry we spoke extensively to senior fashion executives. Many felt that although doing an MA in Fashion Business Management would not ensure promotion, potential candidates who learn how to apply the knowledge they gain from the course can become leaders who can inspire others. Those candidates need to understand the values and culture of the industry and, most importantly, recognise the difference between information and knowledge and have clearly defined goals.

Content

Please note: This course will run at Level 6, which is equivalent to the final year of a BA Honours degree, and is a preparatory course for students who want to study at postgraduate level, but currently need further knowledge and skills before being eligible for postgraduate study. A one-year conversion course for students who have a 2.1 or higher first degree in an area unrelated to fashion management, this course will enable students who come from different paths of study to progress onto fashion management postgraduate courses or enter employment.

The international student body on the Graduate Diploma Fashion Management, reflects the internationalisation of the fashion industry. Students are encouraged to draw on their own experience to develop a global understanding of the relevant dynamics affecting the fashion industry. Drawing on the field of International Business, Marketing, Operations Management and Creative Management, this inter-disciplinary course will cover a wide range of topics, including the establishment of the fashion industry, its internationalisation drivers, product development and product life cycles, fashion forecasting, fashion marketing and marketing communications with a specific focus on social media, consumer behaviour and fashion branding.

This provides students with a rich and stimulating learning experience from which to progress, culminating in a final project that is self-negotiated and relevant to their future aspirations. Many students progress onto MA study while others move into employment, defining and establishing their roles within the sector including positions in PR, marketing, management and product development.

Structure

The Fashion Language and Context unit (20 credits) enables students to locate their own work within global economic, social, cultural and technological contexts. Students will have the chance to enrich their own understanding by engaging in debate and by exchanging ideas with students across a range of courses within the School of Graduate studies from diverse backgrounds and with expertise in a range of fashion disciplines. This will enable students to share experiences and benefit from interdisciplinary approaches to the subject. The unit is underpinned by English support specifically directed to enable students to fully understand and evaluate language used within these discourses.

The introductory units Fashion Business Environment and Creative Fashion Management will provide a variety of specialist knowledge required as a solid base for study. The second term will build on that knowledge with Fashion Marketing Management. The Fashion Business Project unit will enable you to specialise in your own interests and to research a self-selected topic from three subject areas of management.

Fashion Business Environment (20 credits) will consider strategies and concepts for different types of business from small and medium enterprises to large corporations. Creative Fashion Management (20 credits) looks at key requirements such as innovation, creativity and new product development. A more specialist in depth approach to Fashion Marketing Management (20 credits) will explore branding and marketing communication theories and practices.

The final term offers you the opportunity to specialise in one of three areas of expertise, retailing, marketing and creative management for the final Fashion Business Project (40 credits). STUDY TRIPS

Students will take part in an international study trip of one week in one European Fashion Capital. They will have the opportunity to meet with leading industry professionals and visit companies in the fashion, design and luxury industries.

During the company visits students will work on a project relating to one of these industries and in alignment with their future career ambitions.

INTERNSHIP

Each student will undertake an internship of a minimum of three months in a company of their choice at the end of the classroom part of the program. The internship will contribute directly to the content of the Final Management Project and may take place anywhere in the world.

FINAL MANAGEMENT PROJECT

The second year of the program is dedicated to the Final Management Project which will be undertaken under the supervision of a GGSB professor.
Students will focus on a management aspect of the fashion, design and luxury industries; they are also encouraged to choose the subject of the Final Management Project in coherence with their future career goals. It is possible to complete the project in parallel with an employment or an internship in France or abroad.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Foreign language skills are essential in a globally competitive business environment. The program is taught in English, and no prior knowledge of French is required to attend the program. Students have the possibility of learning French or another foreign language such as Spanish or Chinese during the program.
This language component, although not compulsory, is highly recommended for students who intend to pursue an international career, since companies in the Fashion, Design and Luxury industry are currently recruiting personnel speaking the language of the country in which they are based, in addition to English and in-demand languages like Chinese or Russian.

The course merges practical skills, with leading academic research surrounding areas such as business, marketing, consumer behaviour, branding and fashion theory – giving a solid platform for graduates to move into the industry or progress in their chosen career path.

MA Fashion Retail is designed to accommodate a range of student backgrounds, from those already within employment looking to add to their existing skills, to design graduates looking to expand their knowledge of branding and retail strategy, or even those seeking a change in career. Learning activities will focus on the needs of individual students, allowing them to focus projects on their area of expertise or future career ambitions.

The course has been developed to meet global fashion industry demand for graduates with both creative skills and business acumen, particularly surrounding multi-channel retailing, digital and social media strategies, brand management, retail design, marketing and communication. What you will study

Students will benefit from an immersion into the contemporary fashion industry, with modules addressing both the creative skills and theoretical application necessary. The course will combine a creative focus with the acquisition of technical skills and professional expertise via experiential learning and the strategical application towards live and industry simulated briefs.

Selection of Modules include:

- Academic and Professional Practice for Fashion
This module is design to cater to students individual learning needs, whether that be focused on research into the fashion industry or towards research and academic skills required for Masters level study. Students will consider their own personal experience and future career aspirations along with a focus on creative digital visualisation skills and industry standard software.

- Fashion Retail Interactions
This module will explore the landscape of fashion retail to encourage students to engage with contextual understanding, looking into areas such as consumer behaviour, sales management, visual merchandising, buying, multi-channel retailing and marketing communication. Students can choose an area of specialism to produce a visual research book, demonstrating their skills in research and analysis.

- Fashion Retail Space and Place
This module will encourage innovative thinking as students question what retail is and what it could be in the future. Students will use industry standard 3D visualisation software to design their own retail space that will be focused on a specific market and consumer base, considering the store environment, use of multi-platform integration across all levels of fashion retail.

- Fashion Brand Design and Communication
This module will critically explore the nature of branding, with both theoretical understanding and creative and practical application. Students will be encouraged to select an existing fashion brand or retailer, researching fully utilising both primary and secondary research methods, before proposing an opportunity for re-branding or re-positioning of the brand. Students will utilise create software to produce promotional materials relating to their ‘new’ brand concept. This module is designed to run as a live brief with a brand.

- Strategic Fashion Retail Innovation
Students will be asked to think globally, exploring the impact of wider factors on the design of fashion retail strategies for innovation. Students will consider a consumer group in a specific marketplace and produce a strategy for international expansion. This strategy will be accompanied by creative promotional material to enhance students research and analytical skills, as well as their visual communication.

The final semester of the degree will include a 60-credit project, which will develop through one of the above modules. The final major project enables students to focus on their area of expertise, designing their own major project brief (with help from lecturers) that will showcase their advance fashion retail knowledge and design skills. Students will be guided on an appropriate project, before working with tutors to create an outcome that can be used as a discussion point in future interviews or exhibitions. Alternatively, students can choose an extended work placement, or reflection on their own work practice, to utilise work placed learning into their MA Fashion Retail.

The course is offered over one year (full-time) or two years (part-time) and includes:

Programme Assessment

Teaching methods include a mixture lectures, seminars, group critiques, live projects, workshops, individual tutorials and events. During the final stage of the course, learning becomes more independent and self-managed, making your timetable more flexible.

Our Fashion Management students benefit from a dedicated faculty with extensive experience and knowledge of the industry. Master of Science in Fashion Management Curriculum

The Master of Science in Fashion Management consists of 90 ECTS credits and is offered on a full-time basis. The curriculum is developed around introductory courses to build a common managerial background; core management courses with a focus on the industry; and specialized courses in fashion. It also includes French or other foreign language courses.

Following the learning-by-doing methodology, students are constantly developing projects in teams. The Fashion Management Master students are hosted in a dedicated classroom, a space that it's transformed in an innovation design studio where students experiment with new tools an knowledge, with the guidance of the faculty. Small groups of students in the class facilitate the application of this hand-on methodology.

Leading managers need to have strong personal skills, to head projects involving heterogeneous teams of people. They should be capable to be the reference for the working team, but also transmit confidence to senior positions and investors. Personal branding, people management and creative leadership will be then integrated during the development of classes.

Fashion leaders must be able to communicate very clearly their concepts, either to the business staff or to the working team in order to achieve the desired results. Therefore the students are taught a very diverse set of tools, to train their skills to a level where they can communicate well.

With the aim of creating synergies between future professionals, some transversal activities will be held for exchanging knowledge with students of different programs is part of IED philosophy.

PERSONAL RESEARCH PROJECT

The Personal Research Project is the single most important piece of written work that students undertake during their RSP Research Study Program. PRP is the culmination Master and should demonstrate that the student has acquired skills, knowledge and analytical capabilities.

The project is an original piece of research involving primary data collection which aim is to undertake an individual work that meets the requirements outlined in these guidelines in order to achieve a passing grade.

In the same period students are working on their PRP so that they can choose to focus their investigation on a personal project or to connect it with the internship.

FIELD TRIPS

To give students a wider understanding of market state-of-the-art, 2 field trips are scheduled in the course curriculum, one to Milano and the other to Paris.

With the guidance of professors and coordination, students will explore different markets and professional contexts in Europe.

Field trips take students for 4 days to European Fashion Capitals to exchange knowledge in different environments. After this days devoted to academic activities, students have the opportunity to discover the city by their own.

- Students work closely with Solent’s industry contacts. Retailing company B&Q is currently involved in teaching the ‘Retail Futures: Innovation and Enterprise’ unit.

- Students will also have the opportunity to work in Re:So, our student-managed high-street retail boutique, or pitch for agency work through Solent Creatives.
- Students are supported by tutors to secure industry work placements.

The industry -

The retail workforce is projected to grow between 2013 and 2020, with job opportunities expected to increase for managerial positions in particular (Prospects, 2015). This unique degree programme will help you to capitalise on the growth, developing key skills that visual merchandising and product buying employers are seeking.

The programme -

With increasing competition in the retail sector, fashion merchandisers play a vital role in transforming ordinary store environments into exciting retail experiences. Students studying on Southampton Solent’s unique fashion merchandise management programme will undertake in-depth study of visual merchandising, retail design and fashion buying – delving into the psychological and cultural factors that influence consumer spending.

The curriculum also covers technical innovation and the place of technology in the modern retail environment. These contemporary innovations are examined alongside retail design, visual merchandising, in-store branding and the benefits of customer interaction.

Students can get involved in retail activities at Re:So, Solent’s student-run high-street store. Re:So stocks a range of fashion and craft products produced by our creative students, making it the ideal place to get hands-on visual merchandising experience. The store’s upper floor ‘learning zone’ has previously hosted guest speakers from the fashion industry, workshops, photo-shoots and exhibitions – all with an emphasis on developing student retail, enterprise and employability skills.

The course concludes with a final master’s project. This is a chance for students to specialise in an area that suits their unique career ambitions, applying the skills that they have learnt throughout the course. Project supervisors are chosen based on the topic of the dissertation, ensuring that students have one-to-one access to expert support.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

The course is taught through seminars, tutorials and workshops, with an emphasis on creativity and critical thinking. You will collaborate with our industry partners and take part in occasional group projects.

We can provide support and guidance to help you find relevant work experience at a fashion or design company through our close links with industry. Former students have completed placements in a wide range of areas, including:

Assessment -

Assessment is through projects, reports and a dissertation.

The tuition fees for the 2016/2017 academic year are:

UK and EU full-time fees: £6,695 per year

International full-time fees: £11,260 per year

UK and EU part-time fees: £3,350 per year

International part-time fees: £5,630 per year

Graduation costs -

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2015, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £42 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

The fashion industry is a vibrant and challenging business environment. This Fashion Management with Marketing MA is designed to accommodate a range of career opportunities within this sector, providing you with an advanced understanding of the global fashion industry.

Our innovative programme is aimed at graduates with a fashion, textiles, design or business degree who wish to gain management knowledge, with the aim to become a manager within this sector. It will also provide a suitable progression route for those who have worked in the industry but want to improve their employment prospects to get to a higher level, as well as for those preparing for PhD study.

You will learn from a range of expert staff about the management practices which are specific to the fashion and textiles business, as well as the inclusion of fashion marketing and promotion techniques, and brand management theories. You will graduate with an advanced understanding of the global fashion industry.

Teaching usually consists of one hour lectures followed by one or two-hour seminars or tutorials for each module. You will also be expected to conduct a substantial amount of self-directed learning, which is important for you to contextualise your studies and to broaden your knowledge. The Fashion Management with Marketing MA is a theoretical programme and assessments are mostly by the submission of fully referenced and structured reports. Presentations are also fundamental as an opportunity for you to present your work to others either for assessment or within a scheduled class activity. One module includes the formulation of a weekly blog for you to keep abreast of topical issues. You will also be required to submit a project proposal which will act as your plan for future research, especially for the dissertation.

The fashion and textile business is highly competitive and we encourage you to develop networking opportunities by becoming a student member of trade associations and to engage in conferences and seminars delivered by industry members.
We expect you to be proactive and attend presentations provided by visitors from the fashion and textiles business to the university, as extra curricula activity. Teaching staff come from a range of art and design disciplines, contributing to their own areas of expertise. Throughout the programme the curriculum is also enhanced by visiting lectures from a variety of business experiences.

Graduate careers include fashion buying, fashion marketing, fashion public relations, merchandising and logistics management, management of the product development process, retail or brand management, product sourcing, supply chain management, and e-commerce. Graduates would also be in a strong position to consider developing a new business along with the support from the university's business development unit.
