The Middle East has seen significant political and social upheavals in recent years which have had huge repercussions both within the region and beyond; the on-going Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the various peace initiatives launched to try and bring an end to that conflict, the end of the Lebanese civil war and the fragile peace that has followed and the war to ‘liberate’ Iraq and topple Saddam Hussein.

More recently we have witnessed the rise of Al Qaeda and the proliferation of Islamist groups affiliated to it operating far beyond the borders of the Middle East, a spate of popular uprisings calling for democracy in parts of North Africa and the Middle East popularly known as the Arab Spring and the fall-out of these rebellions both politically and socially in Egypt and Syria. The civil war in Syria has created a huge refugee problem which has created a humanitarian crisis in both Jordan and Lebanon, bordering countries that have neither the resources nor the necessary infrastructure to deal with such large scale migration. Political tensions have also been generated by the crisis.

The MA in Middle East Politics and Security Studies focuses on many of these themes and traces their origins historically in an effort to offer a much deeper level of understanding of social and political developments and broader security implications in this troubled region that have had - and continue to have -ramifications for peoples and governments far beyond the Middle East.

The School has over 50 years' experience of teaching aerospace, and has established an excellent international reputation in this field. We offer extensive lab facilities for aerospace engineering students, including a flight simulator, the latest software packages and wind tunnels. This MSc combines analysis and design with management skills to produce highly-employable postgraduates.

What you'll study

Year 1

This year is centred on consolidating your architectural design skills. You’ll also be introduced to the idea of architecture as a responsive solution to fundamental social issues. You’ll choose an area of personal interest that you’ll research for your dissertation.

Year 2

You’ll undertake an architectural project. This requires you to take a viewpoint on contemporary architectural issues and choose a theme that reflects your own interests and creative ambitions. As well as studio-based activities you’ll follow your chosen theme through project work and optional classes. You’ll also attend a taught course in professional studies and a series of guest lectures.

Study trips provide opportunities for intensive examinations of the culture and built fabric in a variety of urban and rural locations both in the UK and overseas. Recent trips include Barcelona, Rome, Paris and Venice and the less familiar Gdansk, Toledo and Monte Caruso.

Study abroad

You’ll have the opportunity to study abroad (subject to academic performance). The department has the most expansive international exchange programme in the UK. We have agreements with 22 institutions across Europe, Canada, the Far East and South America.

Learning & teaching

Each part of the course allows you to explore and develop projects related to your own interests in contemporary architecture.
The course is made up of studio design work, lectures, special projects and workshops.
The focus of study is on design project work including the analysis, synthesis and appraisal of design ideas. You’ll show your understanding of these ideas through drawings, physical and digital models, written and graphic work.

Assessment

The MArch degree normally requires further assessment over the summer semester. This will be on an aspect of the diploma project that is explored to a greater level of detail.
You’ll have exams in semesters 1 and 2 on all aspects of the course and are expected to present a complete academic portfolio based on advanced design study.

Career opportunities for Architecture graduates range from working in large multidisciplinary practices to smaller specialist firms.
Many of our graduates are employed by highly respected practices throughout the world, while others have set up their own businesses.

All applicants must normally hold a degree in architecture providing exemption from RIBA part 1. Desirably, overseas students should demonstrate that their work has received exemption from RIBA part 1 by undertaking the Architects Registration Board Prescribed Examination, or by giving the department reassurance that this will be successfully completed in the first year of study. Applicants for the part-time course should normally be working in practice. Course description
The programme provides students who have completed an undergraduate degree in architecture with the opportunity to define their own interests, speculating on a personal response to the design and making of architecture. Architecture is primarily a cultural activity, with significant connections to
theoretical, technological, and historical narratives. The discipline is exceptionally responsive to change, and actively engages with both the internal world of ideas and external realities around us; modernity in the broadest sense is a critical part of the world view of successful architects.

Our aim therefore is to educate reflective and resourceful architecture graduates for the 21st century.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Architecture is a strongly design-based course, underpinned by a firm base in theory and technology. The department is committed to a studio system as being the best medium for the exchange of ideas. Students on the course choose from three design studios identified by subject and theme. Each studio has developed its specialised approach to architecture based on specific responses to contemporary issues in the city, and the developing landscapes around cities. Issues explored include the relationship between architecture and urban design, architecture and popular culture, and architecture, geometry, and structure.

There is an emphasis on the observation and generation of alternative models for the city. This is developed through field trips to destinations such as Beijing, Berlin, Delhi, Dubai, Havana, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Jaipur, Las Vegas, Marrakech, Moscow, St Petersburg, and Tokyo.

Career opportunities
The course is well connected to key practices in London. Many LSBU graduates also work abroad in the Gulf States, China and the Far East, and Russia and the ex-USSR republics.

Students may also use their qualification as an introduction to careers in critical writing, journalism, project management, teaching, media and broadcasting, research, and website or software design.

Typical background of applicant
This course is usually intended for graduates of architecture courses where students have exemption from RIBA part 1. Applicants to this course will have a first degree in architecture (normally a 2:2 Hons or better); however, the university recognises that many individuals develop additional skills during their year out and will interview such applicants with a portfolio of both academic and practice work.

Professional recognition
The course is unconditionally validated by the RIBA, and offers the professional award of RIBA part 2 on successful completion of the course; the course is prescribed by the Architects Registration Board.
