The MBA Family and Smaller Enterprises starts from the premise that anyone working in a family business requires at least two forms of expertise: business expertise and the ability to consider the family dimension. By studying some general business modules, and others that focus directly on the family dimension, this MBA prepares students for careers working in the family business or within the business advisory community. You will complete a project with a focus on a family business or a smaller enterprise.

Teaching, learning and assessment

You will attend lectures and seminars, work in groups and carry out independent learning. You will be expected to participate in discussions, develop ideas and engage with experiential learning. Assessment methods will include management reports, essays, exams, reflection on practice, and group work with presentations. A unique aspect of the course is the challenge to design, lead and reflect upon a project that focuses on an external business partner. A central part of the course experience is the regular involvement of industry through specific visits, guest lectures, scenario planning and project opportunities. Class sizes are normally 10-30 students.

Modules studied on-campus require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Attendance requirements at QMU will depend on which module you are studying and whether you are full or part time. In most instances the taught elements of the full-time course occur on Tuesday, Wednesday (AM) and Thursday. Part-time students have the option to select different routes each year. Links with industry/professional bodies QMU is an Approved Centre of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), the only professional body in the UK dedicated to promoting the highest standards in management and leadership excellence. As an approved centre, we are working towards facilitating CMI professional qualifications within our postgraduate awards. The MBA involves a number of guest lecturers and visits to industry, for example Diageo, New Lanark Heritage Centre, Nairn’s, Glenkinchie Distillery, and Luca’s.

All MBA students, will study the following core modules:

What is Business Development?

CNCP RECOGNITION

Students graduating from the MSc Business Development also receive a certificate conferring them the title of Manager International. This title, recognized by the Commission Nationale de la Certification Professionnelle - an agency belonging to the French Ministry of Labor - attests to the successful acquisition of a core of international management skills and knowledge necessary for future roles as managers in an international context. The Manager International label is registered on the Répertoire National des Certifications Professionnelles at Level 1, the highest level for such certification.

At the end of the classroom portion of the program, each student will be required to complete a thesis, known as the Final Management Project. This work is approximately 20,000 words in length and is completed under the guidance of a GGSB tutor.

To successfully complete the Final Management Project, you are required to address a particular research question or knowledge gap in the field of your study.

This should be business oriented and coherent with your program’s objectives. You may choose to write your Final Management Project on a topic grounded in your internship experience.

During this program, participants will have the opportunity to become real-life business developers by exploring a Live Business Case provided by companies working in partnerships with the MSc Business Development program. The work students do on the Live Business Case is closely linked to the International Study Residency. Students will work in groups, delving deeply into their cases during the seven months from October to June under the supervision of a GGSB coach.

EXPECTATIONS AND OBJECTIVES FOR MSC BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT STUDENTS

The Live Business Cases are launched by a briefing given by the company.

The Live Business Case will cover:

- Looking at business development and management issues from an integrated, holistic perspective,
- Provide students with a final opportunity to apply learning from the material, courses and lectures that they have studied.

At the conclusion of the Live Business Case, students will be able to:

- Build a company analysis
- Select and apply a methodology, and make useful and efficient recommendations
- Understand the Business Development process
- Provide critical analysis
- Make strategic decisions
- Work in small multicultural groups under time constraints
- Produce compelling written and oral presentations
- Demonstrate communication, negotiation and leadership skills

At the end of 7 months of the Live Business Case, each group will produce a written report and make an oral presentation to the Jury (company tutor, school tutor and program director) and the other groups from the program.

International Residency Trip: An Amazing Opportunity!

As part of the MSc Business Development program, students have the opportunity to visit one emerging economy each year (Brazil, Russia, China, India). The goal is to create an integrated learning experience for all participants.

The International Residency Trip combines academic lectures, corporate visits, and cultural activities. The students gain extensive knowledge of global business practices to prepare them as business developers that consistently perform across cultures and compete in a global market. The International Residency Trip is linked with the Live Business Case and students will have the amazing opportunity to visit important companies.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Foreign language skills are essential in business today and the program is taught in English but provides the possibility to learn a foreign language at the same time.
No prior knowledge of French is required to attend the program. Non-French speakers may study French, native and fluent French speakers will have the possibility to choose from Spanish or Chinese. The language component is not compulsory.

MANAGERIAL CREATIVITY: A SELF MANAGEMENT METHOD

This course/ work shop is an introduction to all group assignments to be carried out all through the year. In order to help you be efficient when working in small groups, you need to know not only your personal strengths and improvement points but also those of your class.

By discovering them during this course, you'll be able to imagine together how to leverage the strengths of your class and how to manage the improvement points. You have to manage the classroom as a company so we will appoint the different representatives in charge of taking care of the main aspects of the construction of the class as a performing team: event manager, class representative, time keeper, project leader, MSC community leader, Alumni communication and coordination manager. There are three areas of focus for study:

3. Building a Career Focus – individual classes give you exposure to different areas of the business. Conversion to the MBA

The conversion syllabus can be completed through any route of the MBA. That includes studying in Strathclyde Business School’s centres around the world and the flexible learning option. - Living case study
The Living case study is an innovative way of bringing participants to an understanding of what it means to deal with organisational issues at a managerial level. The exercise casts participants in the role of a graduate trainee who has been asked by the management director to analyse the behaviours in the company and present to the board a way forward.
Management consultancy firm Accenture regularly attend the final presentations. These presentations showcase the professionalism of the cohort and the analytic skills they have acquired through this and the other classes that make up the syllabus. Accenture’s experienced consultants recognise the type of issues and behaviours recreated in the simulation and provide hints and tips on dealing with problem situations and communicating ideas to executives.

Course content

Introductory modules explore the concepts of enterprise and entrepreneurship and their role in society. You’ll examine how enterprise is seen around the world, and how different geographical and economic contexts create challenges for new ventures.

You’ll consider contemporary issues and debates during guest lectures with successful entrepreneurs, hearing first-hand about their experience of the latest topics. You’ll also develop your understanding of research methods in business and enterprise studies.

The course has a practical focus and you will work on a range of projects that allow you to gain real experience – you’ll create a new venture and work in a team to deliver a consultancy project for an entrepreneurial business.

In the final semester, you’ll complete a dissertation project on a research question of your choice - this can be used to explore your own ideas for a business venture or social enterprise, or look at how best to support or grow an existing firm.

You’ll also have a choice of optional modules in key areas of management and international business, including cross-cultural management, supply chain management and the emerging markets.

If you study part-time, you’ll study one day per week over 24 months and take only the compulsory modules, plus a dedicated module in applied enterprise. The part-time option enables existing entrepreneurs to continue to develop their own enterprise, whilst professionals and budding entrepreneurs can work alongside their studies.

Learning and teaching

We use a variety of different teaching methods such as lectures, seminars, tutorials, work-based learning, fieldwork and workshops. Independent study is also vital to this programme, allowing you to develop your skills and prepare for taught sessions and assessments.

The Enterprise Project module is one example of how practical learning and teaching is embedded in the programme. This gives students the chance to work closely with an entrepreneur and undertake a strategic developmental role within their business. Students who choose to take an elective module(s) in Bradford or at one of our partner institutions will have a wider range of choices, including modules such as Mergers and Acquisitions, Management Consulting and Global Supply Chain Management. Up to three modules may be taken in this way at no extra cost.

The management project is an integral part of the Bradford MBA and is often the most challenging and rewarding part of the programme. At the end of the taught programme you put into practice what you have learnt by investigating and reporting on an important management issue or opportunity. If you are sponsored by your employer, the project can relate to your workplace.

Otherwise, you may choose to use the project to deepen your knowledge of a different sector or organisation, or as a stepping stone to your next job. The project findings and recommendations are then written up in a 9,000-word dissertation.

Throughout the project you will be guided by an experienced academic and you will have access to the School of Management Effective Learning department. The Effective Learning service often proves to be very useful providing students with a clear understanding and guidelines on what is required in order to successfully complete their project.

Learning activities and assessment

Students are expected to take two subjects (modules) every three months.

Each module contains nine study units. Students typically progress by studying one unit from each module per week. This equates to approximately 14-16 hours of study per week. If you don't think that you have enough time to study two modules over the three month period you can always chose to study just one module, lightening your workload considerably.

If work or family life is particularly busy then you can even suspend your studies and restart at a later date. This flexibility means that students can complete a distance learning MBA in 2 to 6 years. We do however strongly advise that students study two modules every three months.

Study Abroad

You may decide you want to accelerate your studies, learn about a particular subject area, study alongside other University of Bradford School of Management students or simply broaden your horizons and spend some time studying overseas. You can do this by undertaking up to three block modules (i.e. 3-5 days of intensive study) at no extra cost (other than travel, accommodation and subsistence) at the School of Management or at any one of our partner institutions in Dubai and Singapore.

Career support and prospects

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

An MBA is an opportunity to either change career direction or consolidate experience then return and progress in a previous industry or job. The Financial Times Global MBA rankings show that, on average, 20% of alumni achieve board-level positions within three years of graduation.

The idea of a Fashion Business Management MA was formulated in discussion with industry leaders. Building on the success of our Fashion Merchandise Management courses and in particular the close collaboration with industry we spoke extensively to senior fashion executives. Live business project

Many employers require graduates who possess a range of skills and knowledge, including experience in the workplace. Masters students of the Business School take a unit called Investigating Business Practice, where you will act as a consultant for a real business. This will develop your project management, team working, client management and business consultancy skills.

In groups, you will be matched with a business organisation that is seeking solutions to an issue that is related to your subject area. You will be expected to meet with the client company, identify the key issues that the client is facing and be required to scope out their specific requirements and business needs, delegate roles and tasks within your team and then respond professionally to this brief, showcasing strategies and proposals that they can realistically implement into their business.

The Master of Business Administration - Master of Conflict Management and Resolution program is designed for students who intend to broaden their knowledge in business administration and management while becoming qualified in the areas of conflict management and resolution.
This course allows graduates to distinguish themselves to future employers with a dual Masters degree and is popular among progressive senior managers, middle managers and legal professionals who want to fast track their way towards more than one qualification.

Practical skills

The Master of Conflict Management and Resolution course is academically grounded and practice oriented. Our students develop the knowledge and skills to analyse, manage and resolve conflict in a wide variety of contexts. Graduates are prepared to work in professions that deal directly with conflict as well as in other professions that require conflict management skills.

What you will study

The course helps you to identify and use archives and other resources which are an important and sometimes neglected aspect of researching family history. Archives will help you discover more about the world that your ancestors lived in.

Aims of the Programme

This programme teaches the skills and methodologies necessary to investigate the history of families and neighbourhoods within the wider context of social history.

The courses are online, easy to use and fully supported. You can do them wherever you live and can log onto the site at whatever time you wish to study. You will work your way through the courses with other students and will be able to discuss the topics on a discussion forum. Your tutor will provide support and guidance throughout.

Students study a series of core and optional modules which have full academic accreditation from the University of Dundee. The programme is delivered by distance learning via the University of Dundee's Virtual Learning Environment which ensures a supportive and interactive learning environment, with frequent contact between students and tutors.

Centre for Archive and Information Studies

The Centre for Archive and Information Studies (CAIS) is part of the University's Archive, Records Management and Museum Services (ARMMS) which is responsible for the care and development of the University's historical collections, the management of systems to control business records and compliance with information legislation across the University.

CAIS offers postgraduate and undergraduate distance learning programmes for information professionals and family and local historians, delivered in an interactive online environment and allowing flexible part time study.

CAIS also conducts a number of associated activities such as hosting a range of presentations, seminars and conferences, the attraction of external funding and occasional taught training courses in collaboration with experts in the field throughout the UK and beyond.

Course Content and Structure

Mlitt degree:

To qualify for the MLitt in Family and Local History, students must complete a total of 180 credits.
Compulsory modules total 40 credits:
Skills and sources for Family and Local History in Scotland or England - 20 credits
Scots or English Palaeography and Diplomatic - 20 credits
Students can then choose to study a selection of optional modules, to equal 80 credits.

The list of options can be found on the CAIS website. 20 credit modules last for 15 weeks, 10 credit modules last for 9 weeks. Finally, a dissertation of 18,000 words is completed (60 credits).

PG Certificate:
To qualify for the Certificate in Family and Local History, students must complete a total of 60 credits. Students must complete one of the following core modules, but they can elect to study both if they so desire:
Skills and Sources for Family and Local History in Scotland (20 credits)
Skills and Sources for Family and Local History in England (20 credits)
Students can then choose to study a selection of optional modules to complete their total of 60 credits.

Assessment

Essays/reports; contribution to module (through online tasks and discussion board debate), dissertation of 18,000 words for MLitt students.

Student Support

The programme is delivered by distance learning via the University of Dundee's web-based Virtual Learning Environment which ensures a supportive and interactive learning environment, with frequent contact between students and tutors. The VLE gives access to study materials, links to on-line journals, discussion boards and research guides. Module tutors provide regular feedback and support to the students.

Structure

The MSc in Business Strategy & Entrepreneurship consists of taught components, directed reading, assignments, practical sessions, written examinations and a new venture plan.

The taught component covers two academic semesters, each covering four core modules.

During Stage One, you will attend lectures, practical classes and tutorials coupled with directed reading and other assignments.

Following this, in Stage Two, you will carry out a new venture plan. The aim of the new venture plan is to integrate and apply core course concepts, skills and techniques holistically, experientially and in a self-guiding context in order to construct and present a complete plan for a new business venture.

You will undertake four core modules in each semester, each worth 15 credits. These modules provide you with a thorough grounding in the theory and skills needed to become an effective entrepreneur.

Following successful completion of the taught phase, you will undertake a New Venture Plan. This consists of both group and individual components and allows you to demonstrate the theories and techniques developed in the taught phase.

Methods of teaching

Most modules involve a mixture of lectures and small group teaching (called classes, seminars, workshops or tutorials).

In a lecture, the lecturer will mainly be giving an overview of a particular aspect of the module content (as well as opportunities for you to ask questions and be reflective), while in classes and workshops you will have an opportunity to practice techniques, discuss ideas, apply concepts and consolidate your understanding in the topic.

Support

You will be allocated a personal tutor at the beginning of your studies. Normally, your personal tutor will teach on your own degree course and you will keep the same personal tutor throughout your course.

Your personal tutor will be able to give you advice on academic issues, including module choice and assessment. If you encounter any problems which affect your studies, your personal tutor should always be your first point of contact; she/he will be able to put you in touch with the wide range of expert student support services provided by the University and the Students' Union as appropriate. You are required to meet with your personal tutors at three points during each academic year but you are also encouraged to get in touch with them at any other point if you need help or advice.

For day-to-day information, the staff of our Postgraduate Student Hub are available, in person, by telephone or by email, from 8am to 6pm each weekday during term time to answer your questions.

Feedback

We’ll provide you with regular feedback on your work. This comes in a variety of formats including oral feedback, personalised feedback on written work, and generic written feedback.

You will be given general feedback in relation to examinations following all examination periods and you will be able to discuss your overall performance with your personal tutor.

When undertaking the dissertation/project you are expected to meet regularly with your supervisor to review progress and discuss any questions. Your supervisor will be able to provide feedback on your research plan and drafts of your work as you progress.

Assessment

Assessment methods vary from module to module but, across your degree scheme as a whole, you can expect a mixture of exams, coursework, essays, practical work, presentations, and individual and group projects.
