Course structure

One year university-based study blocks

This course contains four modules that must be completed to achieve the Postgraduate Certificate and the BIFM Level 7 Diploma. On successul completion of these four modules, you may wish to consider transferring to the Executive MBA in Facilities Management (the modules represent the first year of the Executive MBA).

Each module involves a three-day study block and self-managed study time.

This flexible attendance means that the course has minimal impact on your work or personal time and you can be based anywhere in the UK or overseas.

Starts October, although students can enter the course in January, April and June dependent on student numbers.

  • Delivering strategic facilities management

This module provides an essential and critical perspective of facilities management as a profession, covering facilities management theories, models and practice.

  • Strategic project management

The module develops your critical understanding of strategic project management. It develops your knowledge of project management processes coupled with the ability to apply project management concepts in the life cycle of projects. It provides insights into contractual issue in relation to projects, including management of the contracting process and contract performance.

  • Strategic property asset management

The module develops your critical understanding of the management of property assets and provide insights in to the ways property can have a significant impact on the overall performance of the organisation. Modern drivers of change such as globalisation, technology and innovation in work practices will be analysed and explored. It will encourage critical reflection on the importance of alignment between property and organisational strategy.

  • Leadership, partnership and change within FM

Facilities management professionals are operating in a complex and rapidly changing business environment which is increasingly reliant upon the effective collaboration and communication with a range of professionals in the private, not for profit and public sectors. Within this context, the module develops your knowledge of the complexity of leadership and change, through real world diagnosis and application, and awareness of the diverse spectrum of related concepts, models and theories.

•Service Procurement and Provision – mandatory
This course looks at the key services that make up a modern facilities management operation ranging from interior design, landscaping and courtesy services to the more traditional property related services concerned with the upkeep of facilities. The course provides a theoretical basis for service procurement; the selection of service providers; and risk management models. It considers the organisational, human and cultural impact of facilities and ways in which improved services can affect facility performance. Within the course, ongoing performance measurement systems are also described which enable the effective management of service contracts.

•Space Planning and Management - mandatory
This course provides a strategic overview of space from a business perspective. It identifies the supply and demand process in relation to property portfolios and considers tools and techniques that enable the effective modelling and use of space. It examines the concept of flexibility and reuse in the context of a changing organisational context. Alternative space strategies are examined in the course in tandem with new ways of working. It also considers how space can be used to support work-life balance strategies in organisations.

•Asset Maintenance Management - mandatory
This course examines the effective management and maintenance of operational property. Key aspects include: maintenance policy and standards; planned and responsive maintenance; asset appraisal and evaluation; information management; maintenance; property portfolios; acquisitions and disposals.

•Contracts & Procurement - mandatory
This course considers facilities management in the broader context of the construction cycle. The advent of new procurement methods such as the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) have inevitably drawn facilities managers into the larger issue of construction projects and their procurement, This course considers procurement arrangement options, principles of contract law, procurement through Public Private Partnerships, construction contracts, negotiation, as well as conflicts and disputes. Facilities managers have an ever increasing contribution to make in this process in the capacity of informed client.

•Sustainable Practices in Facilities Management - mandatory
This course examines a number of key issues in facilities management which are rapidly gaining significance within the industry. The purpose of the course is to familiarise the facilities manager with contemporary issues in facilities management and the relevant guidelines, assessment procedures, and standards for sustainable and strategic facilities issues. Key issues covered include: sustainability, energy management, waste management, the working environment, and comfort and productivity in the workplace.

For BIFM accreditation, students should undertake the following three elective courses:

Facilities Management (FM) is one of the fastest growing professions within the UK providing a holistic, integrated approach to the delivery and management of property and associated support services; enabling both the organisation and individual to pro-actively and effectively manage assets, contents and components for the benefit of the users.

Course Overview

The course offers a stimulating part-time pathway, allowing flexibility for individuals with responsibilities and commitments, to progress to Master’s level within the field of: Facilities, Property and Asset Management. The programme is modular, containing both core and elective options within Part One and a Dissertation; generally work related, in Part Two. The latter is often completed remotely but with full workplace support being provided by an experienced supervision team and specialist University support staff.

This is the only post-graduate F.M. related qualification offered within an educational establishment in Wales and the south-west of England. The programme is eminently suited to those working within or aspiring towards a senior management position, addresses cutting edge, strategic and operational issues that impact upon estates, property, facilities and corporate business services. The current mode of attendance for Part One occurs at the Mount Pleasant campus in Swansea, generally taking place on a Wednesday afternoon, between 2.00pm and 8.00pm.

Our computer science conversion course is for those who have little or no experience in computing. You will study the principles and practice of computing. It will include the fundamentals of computing science, database design, network technologies and programming.

This course can also be taken as Continuing Professional Development (CPD), for example by ICT teachers who are switching to the new Computer Science curriculum.

Our research expertise feeds into our teaching. This means that you learn at the cutting edge of the discipline. We incorporate new techniques and knowledge into your learning and have an active research community. We have several research groups and four three research centres.

Delivery

The course is delivered by the School of Computing. You can study over one year full time or two years' part time.

The first nine months of the full time course are devoted to taught modules (120 credits), which are examined by written papers. There will be about 20 contact hours per week. You will also undertake a substantial amount of supervised and unsupervised practical work.

The taught part of the course follows three main threads:

  • programming: introduces the Java programming language
  • computer architecture: covers the basic structure of computers and computer networks
  • software engineering: considers the problems of the design and implementation of large computing systems produced by a team of designers and programmers

The three summer months are devoted to a dissertation project (worth 60 credits).

The course is designed for you as an experienced or recently graduated engineer who wants to develop your subsea knowledge.

Teaching consists of lectures, practical sessions, seminars and personal supervision covering a variety of topics in subsea engineering. The degree is taught using a mix of the academic staff from the School of Marine Science and Technology as well as visiting lecturers and experts from industry.

You will undertake a research project leading to a dissertation. This may be a critical review and/or computational or experimental project using the University's world leading testing facilities. The research project is supported by an academic supervisor and may be conducted with an industrial partner which, where appropriate, may be your employer.

Delivery

Ten taught modules worth 120 credits are delivered in blocks through semester one and/or two. A dissertation or research project, worth 60 credits, is undertaken across the three semesters.

There is a growing shortage, and hence opportunity, for Electrical and Instrumentation (E & I) technicians, technologists and engineers in the oil and gas industry. This is due to an increasing need for higher technology methods of obtaining and processing oil and gas as it is a finite declining resource. The technical challenges of extracting oil and gas are becoming ever more demanding, with increasing emphasis on more marginal fields and previously inaccessible zones such as deep oceans, Polar regions, Falkland Islands and Greenland. The aim of this 18-month e-learning program is to provide you with core E & I engineering skills so that these opportunities may be accessed, to enhance your career, and to benefit your firm.

This advanced diploma is presented by lecturers who are highly experienced engineers from industry, having 'worked in the trenches' in the various E & I engineering areas. The MSc by Research in Archaeology is aimed at students who have a specific topic of interest into which they wish to conduct their own research.

We welcome applications from anyone keen to work in fields that overlap with or complement our academic staff interests. These include human osteoarchaeology, forensic anthropology and archaeology, isotopes and science-based methods of investigation, geographical information systems, early civilisations and urban societies in the Mediterranean and Europe, Egyptology, Roman archaeology, the Byzantine world and late antiquity, hunter-gatherers and the spread of farming in Europe, megalithic monuments, later European prehistory and the archaeology of Scotland. As part of your application, you must submit a viable research proposal which sets out your aims and plans, while demonstrating your knowledge of the chosen field: this will be scrutinised as part of our admissions process. Two supervisors will be appointed to work with you on the project. It is a good idea to consult with prospective supervisors in advance of an application.

The School of History, Classics & Archaeology, and our relationships with other subject areas and external organisations, such as the National Museums of Scotland and Historic Environment Scotland, allow us to arrange interdisciplinary study and supervision.

A long dissertation is the sole form of assessment, but you will also attend a prescribed training course and are encouraged to take other relevant courses.

This course provides you with a balance of molecular biology, engineering, computing and modelling skills necessary for a career in synthetic biology. Computational design of biological systems is important as the field of synthetic biology grows. This allows the construction of complex and large biological systems.

While laboratory approaches to engineering biological systems are a major focus, the course specialises in computational design. This provides you with essential computing and engineering skills to allow you to develop software to program biological systems.

Our course is designed for students from both biological and computational backgrounds. Prior experience with computers or computer programming is not required. Students with mathematical, engineering or other scientific backgrounds are also welcome to apply. It is ideal if you are aiming for careers in industry or academia.

We provide a unique, multidisciplinary experience that is essential for understanding synthetic biology.
