This course is flexible in that it offers several entry routes, choices for modular study and appropriate academic targets. Those who have already completed either the BSMS Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (or equivalent, if APL requested) or the BSMS Postgraduate Certificate in Simulation Studies, may enter at Postgraduate Diploma Level. These participants would then successfully complete a further three 20-credit optional modules to achieve a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education (120 M level credits). Normally these modules would be completed part-time within one academic year.

Participants wishing to progress to Masters level must include Module MDM 10 ‘Research Methods & Critical Appraisal’ in their choice of three. A 16000-word Dissertation (as well as a 3000-word draft paper for publication) in the academic field of clinical education completes the Master of Science degree (180 M level credits). This would normally be completed in a further year, but some students with busy NHS jobs find it can take up to two years to complete.

For those who have not yet taken any ‘M Level’ postgraduate study in this area, the normal route would be to take at least two of the the ‘PG Cert Med Ed’ modules in year 1 (MDM 28/140), and then proceed with the PG Diploma/Masters routes in years 2 & 3, as described above.

The overall aim of the course is to promote knowledge of and research into learning, teaching and communication in a clinical context, together with facilitating a reflective awareness of participants’ related educational skills and their ongoing development.

Course Structure

The format of assessment throughout the course is varied: some modules are assessed by more traditional 3,000 word written assignments, centred on a topic relevant to the student’s own practice or in-depth analyses of specific case studies or significant educational events. Others feature the development of specific educational tools (e.g. on–line learning or simulation-based assessment), focussing on more practical aspects of clinical education. Students will also develop a personal educational portfolio of about 5,000 words using an appropriate national professional standards framework i.e. Health Education Academy (HEA) or Academy of Medical Educators (AoME).The Dissertation module involves a personal research project and is assessed by a 16,000 word thesis plus a draft paper for submission for publication in an appropriate academic journal.

Career Opportunities

This course provides health professionals with a firm base to underpin their role as medical educators.

Formal credentialing in medical and clinical education is currently being considered seriously at national level in the UK and elsewhere, and the ‘Teaching Excellence Framework’ (May 2016) for higher education institutions in the UK also means that careers in medical or clinical education are likely to be enhanced via the acquisition of formal qualifications in clinical teaching. Degree Information

Students gain understanding of the context for the emergence of lifelong learning, as well as its incorporation into policies for educational and professional development. They are also able to critically analyse adult learning policy at the national and organisational levels, and acquire the tools to analyse and plan their own professional development and that of others in their organisation.

The MA was adapted from the highly regarded London-based MA in Lifelong Learning to meet the needs of policy makers, researchers, managers, trainers, and others involved in the development of Continuing Education and Training (CET) in Singapore. Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practise is a work-based modular postgraduate degree specifically geared towards the needs of practising and registered midwives. It is practice focused but also supports the student to develop skills in reflection and critical thinking.

Work-based learning is a student-centred approach where the student directs their own learning objectives so they reflect on what is important to their roles in their practice, and use these practice issues to drive forward their learning within the modules.

Midwives completing the Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice programme will have developed as autonomous learners who can think more critically and apply theory, experience and academic literature to the development and enhancement of their practice.

They will have gained not only academic and enhanced clinical skill, but also a number of transferable skills. Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice Course Structure

The Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice course is a flexible part-time degree and students can study a maximum of 60 credits per year and complete in not less than 36 months and no more than 5 years including submission of the dissertation. Most students will be in full time employment and this programme allows them to undertake postgraduate studies whilst they are working.

The first module students will study is SHGM90 Starting your Professional Practice. In addition to this module and SHGM91 Personal Practice Development Portfolio, students will undertake SHMM01 Leadership and Professional Issues in Midwifery or SHMM00/SHMM02 Developing Expertise in the Supervision of Midwives, as an additional core module.

Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice students may also access up to 30 credits from the College of Human and Health Sciences’ postgraduate catalogue of modules. To be awarded the MSc Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice, the student must achieve 180 credits at level 7 which must include the three core modules.

Delivery of the Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice programme is a tripartite arrangement between the student, personal tutor and practice facilitator. Learning for each work-based module is based on the development of a learning contract and consequently the following process will be adopted for each module.

Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice students who do not wish to complete the full MSc have alternative exit qualifications:

- Students will be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice on successful completion of 60 credits at level 7.
- Students will be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Enhanced Professional Midwifery Practice on successful completion of 120 credits at level 7.

For this programme the academic supervision and support is given by Midwifery lecturers experienced in work based learning. The support is offered through a combination of individual tutorials and Action Learning Sets in groups. The MRes offers exciting opportunities to develop advanced scientific, research and transferable skills required to become an independent researcher.

The MRes is organised by the Centre for Human Development, Stem Cells & Regeneration (CHDSCR) which undertakes fundamental research into early development and stem cells, together with applied translational research targeting the NHS and patient benefit.

Through research projects totalling 32 weeks, you will develop a broad range of laboratory skills and work in different research environments. You will be supervised by internationally recognised academic researchers. In addition to providing broader training in scientific research, the course will develop your transferable skills including time and project management, public speaking, critical appraisal and scientific writing, thus aiding employability for a variety of careers.

The intake for this MRes is 15-20 students.

What does this MRes provide?

During the one year, full time programme that commences in September/October, MRes students undertake taught modules in Research Skills in Biomedical Sciences, Stem Cells, Development & Regenerative Medicine, and Advanced Scientific Skills. Students also undertake two research projects totalling 32 weeks, to develop a broad range of laboratory skills and gain experience of working in different research environments. What will you learn in the modules?

i) Stem Cells, Development & Regenerative Medicine module
Students are introduced to core concepts through a series of facilitator-led workshops focussing on key research publications. Students critically appraise primary research papers and develop the skills required to understand, critique and interpret research findings. Integral to these workshops is the requirement for students to present their thoughts and participate in group discussions with both their peers and academic facilitators.

ii) Research Skills in Biomedical Sciences (RSBS) module
A combination of taught and practical sessions are used to introduce students to the core concepts underlying statistical analysis and study design that support students in handling their own data and critically appraising data published by others.

iii) Advanced Scientific Skills module
A series of taught and practical sessions introduce students to additional core concepts used in Biomedical Sciences such as the analysis and critical appraisal of large data sets. In addition, key principles required to relay research to both a scientific and lay audience are introduced. Students write both a scientific and lay abstract for a published primary paper and give a research presentation suitable for a lay audience. Thus, students develop the skills required to communicate their research to both scientists and non-specialists.

iv) Research Project modules
In the two research projects, students are introduced to a range of laboratory skills gaining valuable practical experience of research methodology, experimental design, data interpretation, viva voce, scientific writing, oral and poster presentations.

What teaching and learning methods will be used?

A variety of methods are used including lectures, research seminars, small group discussions, journal club presentations, analysis of large data sets and in depth research projects which incorporate the evaluation and presentation of research findings within the field of stem cell biology. A range of summative and formative assessment methods are used to assess student performance. These include oral presentation, poster presentation, written assignments/critical review, viva voce, laboratory proficiency, analysis of large datasets, lay/scientific abstracts and preparation of a research proposal.

What are the entry requirements for this MRes?

The minimum classification normally expected for a degree entrant is at least a second class upper division (1st or 2:1) in Biological/Biomedical Sciences or a closely related subject from any approved University.

Qualifications from non-UK institutions must be of an equivalent standard to those of UK Universities. Before commencing the course, non-UK applicants should obtain an overall IELTS score of 7.0, with a minimum of 6.0 in each component.

The ethos behind this programme is the development of person-centred cultures, using a professional practice-based learning model that embraces practitioner inquiry and practitioner research, thereby contributing to the development of knowledgeable and dynamic person-centred practitioners who are sensitive to the needs of people who use healthcare services. The programme values knowledge gained through critical reflection on practice experience used in conjunction with the range of knowledge sources. The delivery of person-centred practice (McCormack and McCance 2010) requires practitioners to know and understand self in the context of their practice. Critical reflection is one means to achieve this. Consequently, within the DPHC the focus is on the practitioner learning from practice, understanding the theory underpinning their professional practice-based learning through critical reflection, applying this learning to practice and finally providing evidence in the form of learning and development in practice in an academic portfolio mapped to learning outcomes.

- Course format and assessment -

Although some elements of the programme are taught or delivered online, most of the learning is achieved in and from practice, where the practitioner works with a practice based facilitator (who is a recognised teacher with the Ulster University) and completes a portfolio of their learning. Practice based facilitators enable the practitioner to select the most appropriate modules to match their needs and to meet the requirements of the award.

Methods used include: facilitation in practice, critical reflection, portfolio development, workshops, lectures, seminars/discussions, e-learning, guided reading, teacher and peer observation, presentation, creative methods and debate. Multi-media and other material may be used to support this.

Self, peer and teacher/facilitator assessment will be used throughout the course to assess the achievement of learning outcomes and will require students to demonstrate the blending of theory with practice through participation, critical reflection and by production of coursework, an assignment or portfolio of evidence. Students are also required to complete a Post Feedback Action Plan reflecting on the feedback received from summative coursework, what can be improved on and how they plan to achieve this

Students within the programme come to us with an existing employment background within health and social care. On completion of this programme we expect students to continue their employment in health and social care organisations with an enhanced range of transferable knowledge and skills to benefit their communities, individual patients/families and their carers and employer. The Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) team at London South Bank University (LSBU) has a long history of delivering high-quality ANP education, initially with the first ANP programme in the UK based at the RCN Institute, London and subsequently at LSBU. LSBU has provided ANP education at both degree and masters level in the past. However developments in policy related to advanced nursing practice have increasingly emphasised the need for masters level education to inform and underpin nursing activities at an advanced level.

You will initially enrol for the postgraduate ANP award programme, which comprises of a prescribed sequence of five compulsory modules and the Non Medical Prescribing programme. The curriculum for this award has been shaped by the Department of Health (2010) position statement on Advanced Level Nursing which is the current English policy standard for ANPs. It has been mapped against its four themes of "Clinical/direct care practice", "Leadership and collaborative practice", "Improving quality and developing practice" and "Developing self and others". This ensures that graduates from our Postgraduate Diploma ANP programme (PgDip ANP) will be able to demonstrate all of the elements that are detailed in this statement and are therefore benchmarked against the current policy standards for advanced nursing practice in England.

This course is accredited by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Accreditation unit. This is the only quality marker for ANP programmes in the UK and demonstrates that our programme has been rigorously evaluated against 15 standards and associated criteria (RCN, 2012) and judged to prepare ANPs to an advanced level commensurate with the RCN guidance on ANPs (RCN, 2012). The sequencing of modules is designed to support advancement of clinical knowledge and skills during the programme.

The programme incorporates the Non Medical Prescribing programme for those students who are not already independent prescribers.

You have the option to exit at the end of the PgDip ANP or can choose to progress to gain the MSc award by undertaking a dissertation. You do not have to make this decision until year two or three depending on your rate of progress through the postgraduate diploma programme. You have up to five years to complete the Postgraduate Diploma. Graduates would be required to enrol to undertake the Dissertation within two years of completing the PgDip ANP. Those choosing to progress to the MSc ANP award have six years overall to complete this award from point of registration.

This clinically-focused programme is a "generic" ANP preparation programme. While it is offered to nurses working in any setting and with any client group it should be noted that the curriculum is designed to develop a "generalist" approach at advanced level. In practice this means that you will be expected to gain substantial experience in and demonstrate advanced level knowledge and clinical competence in relation to assessment, clinical reasoning, formulation of appropriate differential diagnosis, diagnostic decision making and initiation or delivery of appropriate timely evidence-based care for patients experiencing problems related to the following: head, neck, ENT, skin, eyes, lymph nodes, respiratory system, cardiac and peripheral vascular systems, gastrointestinal system, musculoskeletal system, neurological system (including cranial nerves), and mental health.

The programme is therefore not appropriate for nurses working within a specialist area who want to continue to further their learning and career within that specialty. Modules

The RCN ANP standards (2012) and DH (2010) Advanced Nursing position statement are central to the design of the curricula and staging of the modules. Key material is introduced, further developed, revisited and consolidated in a spiral approach, with knowledge and skills pertaining to all of the ANP domains and competencies taught, developed and assessed during the programme. All modules carry 20 credits at masters level (Level 7) other than the "Physiological Principles for ANPs" module which is provided at degree level (Level 6) to develop key foundation knowledge to underpin subsequent applied patho-physiology and pharmacology educational input.

The first two modules on the course are:
- Physiological Principles for ANPs
- Advanced Assessment Skills for Clinical Practice

These, along with the Non Medical Prescribing (NMP) programme, can be taken on a stand-alone single module basis and then credited into the ANP course within a two year time frame.

The other modules are listed below and these can only be taken once a student is enrolled on the programme:
- Clinical Reasoning and Applied Pathophysiology for ANPs
- Leadership and Service Development for ANPs
- Managing Clinical Complexity for ANPs

Non Medical Prescribing

The PgDip ANP includes the requirement for you to become an Independent Prescriber by successfully completing the Non Medical Prescribing (NMP) programme. This ensures that graduates from the programme will be able to fully meet patient's needs and service demands. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) stipulates the rules for delivery of the NMP programme, which dictate that this must be taken as a distinct entity with a separate application process. At LSBU the NMP programme is available as a Graduate Certificate (60 credits, Level 6) and a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits, Level 7). Those on the PgDip ANP programme who have not already successfully completed the NMP programme or equivalent, will undertake the full NMP programme at Level 7 and 20 credits will be used towards the PgDip ANP award. A separate occurrence of the NMP programme will be provided for all ANP students from January to July each year. If you have previously completed the Non Medical Prescribing programme (or equivalent) at master's level then you will not be required to repeat this component. However, those who have previously completed the NMP programme (or equivalent) at degree level will be required to make up 20 credits at masters level by undertaking an optional module of choice. The School offers a wide variety of modules including ones that focus on assessing and managing children's minor illness, mentorship and developing research or specialist skills. Alternatively you could use master's level credit from prior learning at LSBU or study undertaken at another university.

Employability

To date we have prepared over 1,000 ANPs who have gone on to enjoy excellent employment opportunities. For example our graduates are now making a positive impact on service delivery and patient care in general practices, walk-in centres, urgent care centres, minor injury units,A&E departments, refugee/asylum seekers/homeless projects, elderly care facilities, 'out of hours' developments, rapid response services, prison services, intermediate care teams, generalist and specialist acute services,critical-care and ITU, outreach initiatives that cross traditional healthcare boundaries, and innovative community-based services. Some are now lead nurses within social enterprises, partners in general practices, nurse representatives on commissioning boards, community matrons and nurse consultants.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is provided by experienced qualified ANPs, many of whom work regularly in clinical practice. A variety of student-centred, teaching strategies are used including skills demonstrations and supervised, practical workshops and use of online learning resources. High quality student skills development and supervision is provided with a one teacher to 15 student ratio.

E-learning complements face-to-face delivery for all modules. Blended learning is used as a teaching and learning strategy alongside classroom attendance in modules to enhance your clinical and professional development and support you to overcome the challenges that ANP's face in the workplace. You therefore need use of a computer and efficient internet access between classroom sessions. For those who are anxious about their ability to study and write at master's level will be supported with sessions on study skills, academic writing, formative feedback on their writing and one to one tutorials.

Practice based learning

Focused practice based learning activities are an integral part of the programme to complement classroom learning and develop your clinical and professional scope of practice to an advanced level. Evidence of clinical development and completion of certified clinical hours, form one of the components of assessment for the clinical modules. Requirements for skills development and practice based learning extend beyond the University semesters to include the summer periods. You are therefore strongly advised to negotiate for your study day to continue throughout the calendar year.

Learning within the work place is supported through identification of a doctor/qualified ANP to act as your "Practice Facilitator" to initially supervise and subsequently support your clinical development. Details of these activities and the role of the Practice Facilitator are provided in the Practice Based Learning Handbook which accompanies the programme and are discussed during a specific session for students and their Practice Facilitators within the Orientation programme at the start of the course.

Assessments

A range of assessment methods are used including health needs assessment leading to development of a service proposal, clinical case analysis, completion of certified clinical hours, a clinically focused portfolio and practical assessments including OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) Guided practice-based learning takes place in the your own work place, supported by a visit from an ANP Mentor.

Attendance

The attendance requirements for this programme are greater those normally associated with a traditional post-graduate course; we use additional study days / blocks to develop the professional skills that are integral to the pathway. The nature of this programme means that those who miss any sessions will lose out on their learning experience. Academic Regulations stipulate that students who miss more than two sessions within a module will not normally be eligible to continue to finish the module. Midwifery practice makes up 60% of the programme and is based in one of the three local maternity units. You will work alongside a registered midwife gaining hands on experience from your first week of practice. Practice sites are allocated according to preference and availability.

Programme details

Professional Doctorates are as rigorous as traditional PhDs but are different in focus. A traditional PhD subject can be relatively fixed, in terms of what is researched. A Professional Doctorate is more variable and adaptable to change due to developments in your profession. This is because the Professional Doctorate is linked intrinsically to your workplace.

The doctorate has run very successfully for eight years. It comprises two years taught modules which you must pass to progress onto a further three years research component during which, you write up your thesis.

During the research component you independently undertake PhD level research study, supervised by two experienced academics. Although the Professional Doctorate programme is housed within the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Social Care we have supervisors from across the Health & Social Care College. We have experts in child psychology, social care, public health, occupational therapy, radiography, physiotherapy to supervise your own area of expert knowledge.

Format

The first two years of the course are modular, with facilitated content, designed to help you refine and develop your initial research ideas. The latter three years are part-time also, focused upon the research element, and there are key milestones at the end of each year within the research element. The thesis is between 40,000- 60,000 words long and you have a viva.

This course is very flexible; with two years part-time of facilitated modules which you use to frame, explore and refine your initial research question. For example, you will use the modules to explore general philosophical and methodological ideas, examine what is known about your topic, what your research will contribute to new knowledge; best methods for undertaking the research and, critically, learn about the leadership skills you will need to lead research in practice.

All the modules are facilitated using blended learning. For example within each module there are face to face sessions led by a module facilitator. In addition specific learning activities for each module will be developed using the virtual learning environment ‘Blackboard’ and the virtual doctorate learning environment (VLS). Both enable greater flexibility about the when and where of learning, and enables you to keep in contact with your peers and the programme team, wherever they have internet access.

Within the professional doctorate the assessment processes have been developed to enable you to critically interrogate, analyse, and reflect on your research ideas, demonstrating your ability to take account of professional and methodological issues.
