Face recognition impairments (prosopagnosia) can present throughout life as a result of acquired or developmental influences. Yet, very little is known about early influences on the developmental trajectory of face recognition skills. While existing evidence indicates that face recognition difficulties appear to be influenced by genetics and early periods of atypical visual experience, other early influences may also impact the development and specialization of the face recognition system. Very recent evidence raises the possibility that premature birth and low birth rate influences face recognition skills in later childhood (Perez-Roche et al., 2017), although the trajectory of these impairments is unclear and it is unknown if they persist through to adulthood or are merely delayed. Further, it is possible that atypicalities in face-processing may be detectable from birth, or instead may manifest at a particular stage in development. Understanding this trajectory and the plasticity of the face-processing system during childhood is of fundamental importance in order for intervention to be appropriately conducted.

The current project will investigate the development trajectory of face recognition impairments that result from premature birth or low gestational weight. A large study will use age-appropriate dominant tests of face and object recognition ability to assess relevant perceptual and mnemonic skills in adults and children at various stages of development. Participants will be recruited who were born prematurely and/or experienced a low gestational weight and compared to appropriate age-matched control groups. Eye-movement data will also be collected in order to detect any abnormalities in face-processing strategy itself.

The own-group biases are indicated by superior recognition for faces of one’s own group relative to another group. These groups include ethnicity (Meissner & Brigham, 2001), gender (Wright & Sladden, 2001), age (Anastasi & Rhodes, 2007), and even university (Hugenberg, Millar, & Claypool, 2008). There are two broad theories explaining these biases: socio-cognitive motivational theories (Sporer, 2001) and perceptual theories (Valentine & Endo, 2002). Eye-tracking has been used to find evidence for both theories but using different groups thereby making any general conclusions about the own-group biases impossible. Evidence suggests that ethnicity determines how faces are viewed (Caldara et al., 2010; Hills, Cooper, & Pake, 2013). However, Hills & Willis (2016) and Man & Hills (in press) have found that people view own- and other-age and gender faces differently. This, therefore, suggests that these biases may be based on different mechanisms.

The proposed study will employ eye-tracking to explore four own-group biases described above using within-participant designs in order to rule out confounding variables and participant effects. Participants view 40 faces (half inverted to measure the face-inversion effect, Yin, 1969) and after a delay view 80 faces (half new) in a standard old/new recognition paradigm, repeated for each type of face.

All students undertake an independent research project related to a problem of industrial interest or on a topic near the leading edge of research, which culminates in a 60–80 page dissertation.

Teaching and learning

Course detail

The course has been designed for all students to meet the Standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and provides the opportunity to gain 40 Masters level credits.

The course runs in partnership with schools across the region and beyond. Whilst every effort is made to support students in their preferred school location, where a school is more than two hours’ drive from Canterbury we would ask applicants to discuss whether this is possible, with Hannah Marsh in Admissions.

This course provides an opportunity for you to gain a PGCE whilst continuing in employment/caring for a family/fulfilling other life commitments. It is flexible and responsive to your needs. It gives you the chance to tailor your studying to your lifestyle and to take a very individual route to QTS, whilst providing opportunities to meet with likeminded people from all over the United Kingdom and Europe.

Two of the modules offer the opportunity to gain 40 Masters credits and these can then be put towards a Masters degree in the future.

Content

All PGCE courses cover three main areas: Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies.

All learning on the course is designed to complement professional practice and the academic study will be informed by and inform practice.

The module work is accessed and submitted online, with tutor support when needed.

There are three school placements of six weeks, eight weeks and eight weeks. There is the possibility of gaining exemption from the second placement, if certain criteria are met, including evidence from previous teaching experience. Placement one and two may be undertaken part-time if necessary, doing a minimum of three days a week in school.

You are obliged to attend a minimum of 12 core teaching days at Canterbury. These cover the core and foundation subjects, are taught by subject specialists and are very highly evaluated.

Format

Learning and teaching is comprised of online materials, face-to-face seminars, group and individual tutorials (these can be face-to-face or via Skype/Facetime/telephone/email) and support in school whilst on placement.

The face-to-face seminars are held in Canterbury on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the year. These offer the opportunity to network with your colleagues and have access to tutors who are subject specialists. These days are fun, informative and designed to provide a theoretical underpinning to your learning. They also offer ideas and suggestions for activities to try out when on school placement and time to answer any queries or concerns you might have.

From the very start of the course you are allocated a pathway tutor who will support you throughout. They will offer pastoral, academic and school experience support, and this strong relationship is a key aspect of your time on the course.

You will also have other subject tutors who will offer guidance both for academic work and school placements. You are welcome to contact tutors and arrange tutorials (face-to-face or virtual) whenever you feel it would be useful.

Assessment

Students will be assessed in two main ways ­ via academic assignments and assessment of their teaching.

Students will submit academic assignments for 20 credits in each curriculum, professional and enhanced studies modules. Each submission will include a written element, but students may also be assessed via presentations or practical performances as relevant to their chosen subject options.

Assessment

Assessment for the Enhancing Learning and Teaching through Reflective Practice module is through the completion of a patchwork text (a series of separate pieces of work that are ‘sewn’ together at the end to link to the structure of the module) and reflective commentary; it includes the observation of your teaching.

The Developing Assessment for Learning module is based on a negotiated format which you can discuss with your tutor and also includes a reflective commentary. You could choose to carry out a patchwork text, group project or an essay, depending on your individual strengths and the methods you work best with.

We use online submission and feedback for our final assessments. With students across the sector increasingly expected to use online plagiarism detection software packages, this offers you an insight into both ‘sides’ of the tool, as well as the opportunity to try out the system from a ‘student’ perspective.

Introduction

The University has a long history of face research. Our internationally renowned team of experts study almost all aspects of face perception, including low level visual processing, adaptation, gaze perception, social perception such as mate preference and attractiveness, mechanisms of recognition and forensic aspects such as unfamiliar face matching and eye witness recovery of memories for faces. This research has led to EvoFIT, a unique system for constructing facial composites of offenders by witnesses and victims of crime, which has a suspect identification rate ten times higher than traditional methods used by police. You will become part of this vibrant research community as you study the key research methods related to face research and will put your learning into practice during a month-long placement.

Delivery and assessment

Teaching is delivered using a variety of methods including tutorials, demonstrations and practical classes, but the majority is seminar-based. Students are typically taught within small groups in specialist classes, with first-year PhD students or other postgraduate students (for example, in modules from other MSc courses).

Both taught and research postgraduates are integral to our research group and expected to participate in our regular meetings. All students allocated a peer mentor are provided with appropriate office space and equipment. In addition, each student is associated with an academic from Psychology.

Part-time students take the same modules spread over two years.

Clinical Pharmacy for General Practice:
NHS England has recently announced their intention to invest £15 million pounds to pilot patient facing roles for clinical pharmacists in GP practices. This is a clear sign of that pharmacists are recognised as health professionals who are able to support patients in the management of long term conditions e.g. by optimising medicines. These roles offer exciting opportunities for pharmacists to develop in this area of practice. . If you wish to work in general practice, it is likely that you will need to be working towards or hold a postgraduate pharmacy qualification that includes Independent Prescribing.
Our new postgraduate pathway 'Clinical Pharmacy for General Practice' allows you to combine your choice of modules from across our Community Pharmacy, Advanced Professional Practice and Prescribing Studies programmes (including the Independent Prescribing course) to meet your own personal learning needs whilst working towards a Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or Masters award.

Achievement of the Master’s award requires you to complete the Professional MSc year. The professional MSc year consists of three compulsory modules: Advanced Practice Development (15 credits), Researching and Evaluating your Practice (15 credits) and the Independent Learning Project (30 credits).

You will require the equivalent of 1-2 days (approximately 10-15 hours) each week to complete your course. Remember that the online nature of our course materials, and the fact that a good proportion of the assessed work focuses on your daily practice, means that you can integrate study and work.

Assessment is entirely by coursework for the Certificate, Diploma and MSc courses. A variety of assessment methods are used such as Practice-Based Assignments that will assess your knowledge, problem-solving skills, and data interpretation skills in relation to application of knowledge to practice, patient care and medicines management. Case Presentations assess your ability to critically appraise the literature and relate published theory to everyday practice. An Audit Project, Practice-Based Assignments, Project Protocol Development and the Independent Study Project Report assess ‘thinking’ and practical skills, and your ability to plan, conduct and report on an investigation. They also assess your ability to critically appraise the literature and relate published theory to everyday practice. Your Reflective Portfolio also assesses your ability to relate theory to practice, and self evaluation of, and reflection on, your own performance and CPD needs.

The nature of the assessments develops your written and oral communication skills. Practical skills and key life/transferable skills are assessed within the methods described above. Each method of assessment is supported by clear criteria for marking; these are explained in the relevant Course Handbooks. The minimum pass mark is 50%.

The summative assessment is supported by a variety of formative assessment activities that include online discussions, formative feedback on elements of the reflective portfolio, contributions to study days and feedback on draft proposals.

Additional Costs

For all programmes you will need regular access to a computer, email and the internet. However apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for our postgraduate programmes, with the exception of those listed below.

Some modules may require that you attend a Webinar. You may find it beneficial to purchase a headset to participate in webinars, however this is not essential if your computer has a built in microphone and speakers.

Some modules may require that you travel to Keele for a study day. There will be additional travel and accommodation costs (if required) to attend any face to face study days.

This course is for people who are working as physiotherapists, who wish to develop themselves and their profession. The MSc in Advancing Physiotherapy Practice aims to help you thrive in health and social contexts where the pace of change is high and professionals need to be dynamic and proactive to meet the needs of the people they work with.

The programme of study aims to be:

-Clinical: with a focus on highly topical subjects, ability to learn in and from the workplace, practical experience, and ability to take specialist clinical and practice routes: for example, musculoskeletal physiotherapy, neurological physiotherapy, cardiorespiratory physiotherapy, paediatric physiotherapy, leadership and management, and education.

- Flexible: with a determination to enable study for students who have a variety of circumstances, and who live in different countries. Two paces of study are available (full-time and part-time) and two modes of study (distance learning, and blended learning which requires attendance). The standard full-time pace is 18 months, which can be accelerated to 12 months where relevant requirements are met. Please see the section on study routes for further details.

- Supportive: with a focus on helping you to adjust to master’s level study at the start of the programme, to stay engaged with your profession throughout the course, and to increase your employability as you progress towards completion. Study routes

-Full-time with attendance (12-18 months): The full-time study route makes use of blended mode of learning which includes face-to-face contact supported by online resources. This is designed with international students in mind and offers attractive practical modules as well as opportunities to learn in clinical settings (see modules). The standard duration of the full-time route is 18 months. This is valuable if your priority is to use all opportunities to develop your professional standing and employability. If you wish to prioritise quick completion of your MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice, and meet requirements, you can accelerate it to 12 months duration.

-Part-time with attendance (3-7 years): You can study the MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice part-time, with a minimum duration of 3 years, and maximum duration of 7 years. If you study this route you can select modules that involve some attendance and some online study. For example, some modules are delivered with blocks of attendance and online study between these blocks. If you study part-time you can also choose to complete distance learning modules as part of your programme.

-Distance learning (part-time or full-time) (1-7 years): You can choose modules that enable you to complete your MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice entirely as distance learning . You can study distance learning at a full-time pace (12-18 months duration) or at a part-time pace (3-7 years).

Teaching, learning and assessment

We use a range of student-centred learning methods, including tutorials, seminars and practical classes, with facilitation of work-based learning and recognition of prior learning. Further specific strategies are used to enable distance learning.
Your performance will be assessed by coursework (assignments), presentations and practical examinations, and you are provided with structured support in learning how to develop and demonstrate your academic skills at a master’s level. Class sizes are usually 5-10 students.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module that is studied on-campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Your attendance requirements at QMU will vary between semesters of study, but contact time might average about six hours per week over one academic year; this would be higher during taught modules. Whether you are studying distance learning or through a mixture of face-to-face contact and online work (blended learning), each 30-credit module will entail around 300 hours of student work. This includes contact with tutors (online or face-to-face), supported by independent learning. When thinking about the total amount of learning, for the full-time pace of study, you will undertake 120 credits of study over two 15-week semesters, followed by your dissertation. This suggests up to 40 hours per week of study. A student who chooses to study part-time may be undertaking, for example, 60 credits of study, which would equate to about 20 hours per week of study. The distance learning route can be studied part-time or full-time.

Links with industry/professional bodies

In order to design a flexible, clinical and supportive programme, we talked with current students, ex-students and employers internationally. We collaborate with many physiotherapists and managers locally to create opportunities for our students to contribute to the development of physiotherapy services during their programmes. This ensures the relevance of their studies, their professional development, and advancement of the physiotherapy profession. The MSc Physiotherapy is accredited by the UK’s Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (to be confirmed following recent revalidation). This course does not lead to HCPC registration. However, advice is given to assist the process of registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Course material will also help the student to develop knowledge and skills recognised by the HCPC.

The programme is a two-year Masters level course through which participating teachers extend their knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematics and related pedagogy, and develop the skills to support other colleagues in mathematics. The University of Northampton has been successfully leading the programme across a wide range of local authorities since 2009, with over 640 successful graduates.

This course is for serving teachers and aims to transform teaching and learning in mathematics. Each teacher develops their own subject and pedagogical knowledge. No pre-existing specialist knowledge of mathematics is assumed, so this course is suitable for all teachers of primary mathematics. Within this course there is a strong focus on promoting reasoning and problem solving in primary mathematics. The teaching activities and workshops are achieved mainly through two weekend residential events each year (making four weekends altogether). For 2016-17 the first two residential weekends are on 5th/6th November 2016 and 4th/5th March 2017.

Assessments

The first year of the programme has two assignments. The first is a reflective discussion of your own mathematical learning with an activity, which you then relate to children’s learning for the same activity. The second assignment is a small project to coach or mentor a colleague within school. For this assignment you will reflect on the impact on teaching and learning for the colleague but also on your own development as a leader of mathematics in school.

The second year has one assignment. This is a small-scale research project that develops an aspect of mathematics across your school. You will use and reflect upon approaches to teaching and learning from the course to improve an aspect of mathematics in your own school. You will also present your whole-school project with a small presentation at the final network meeting. For all of the assignments you will receive personal tutorials and feedback on draft assignments.

Facilities and Special Features

The key feature of this course, and the main reason for its success, is that this programme provides a direct impact upon teaching and learning across the whole school. In all areas of government and public administration – whether in local government, national civil services or international organisations – the world of policy making is changing fast. There is an increasing recognition of the need for a secure and transparent evidence base on which to make policy, but there are also a range of approaches and methods that policy makers can use to assess the evidence base and consider the likely impact of different policies. This Doctorate will enhance professional capability and critical reflection on the theories, methods and practices of policy making.

The course involves a blend of face-to-face and distance learning. If your circumstances change and you are unable to complete the course, there are alternative qualifications that may be awarded depending on the number of credits accumulated.

- Taught stage:
The taught stage is based on four units. In the first year, two compulsory core units provide advanced training in policy analysis and research methods. The first year is designed to equip you with the knowledge and capability to understand and use a range of research methodologies, novel analytical frameworks and toolkits to address key issues within a broad policy context. The two core generic analysis units include:

- Transformational Policy and Practice – to introduce you to theoretical understandings of ‘policy’ and policy making and how they relate to practice. This will include a series of case studies of policy making and implementation from different countries

- Policy Research Methodology – to develop your knowledge and understanding of the methodologies (philosophic frameworks) employed in policy research, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the merits of particular quantitative and qualitative methods.

Each of these generic units carry 18 credits and are assessed with an 8,000 assignment or equivalent. Successful completion of these units would normally entitle you to the PG Certificate exit award if appropriate.

- Specialist streams:
Over the subsequent two years you elect two specialised units, relevant to their field of practice, from a choice of up to four units. These are designed to enable you to develop and hone specific interests towards the conduct of supervised research: current optional units are listed below. The five initial units are:

- international development policy
- education policy
- health policy
- technology policy
- social policy (awaiting final approval).

Each specialist unit carries 18 credits and is assessed by an 8,000 word assignment.

You will be asked to choose a specialist unit in the first year, while undertaking your core modules so that teaching resources can be planned for the following year.

- Research enquiry:
You will spend the final three years of your study developing a supervised research enquiry. Supervision is primarily provided virtually over this period but it would normally be expected that you adhere to a minimum number of face-to-face contact hours. Course Structure

Our course is available to study in a range of options, ensuring you don’t have to miss out.

Full-Time
You can choose to study one year full-time or three years part-time, with qualifications achieved at the end of each year:
-Term / Year One – Postgraduate Certificate
-Term / Year Two – Postgraduate Diploma
-Term / Year Three – Master’s (MSc)

Distance Learning
This course is also offered as a distance learning option, enabling you to study at a time that suits you. You don’t have to attend any face-to-face sessions, and delivery of course materials is done through our e-learning platform, Moodle. Each module with an exam has a revision day which, although not mandatory, you should highly consider attending. If you can’t make it, supporting materials are made available via Moodle.

If you’re an international student, you can sit your examinations at your British council offices for a fee payable locally of around £100 per examination.

Block Release
This option sees you attend intense face-to-face teaching on campus from Monday to Friday for each module, one a term for years one and two. In year three the block weeks take place in the first term for both modules in order to support early initiation of your research project.

This option also provides the flexibility to incorporate some distance learning, to accommodate your work and personal commitments. You can do this at no extra charge and with no penalties.

Assessments
All modules are tested by assignment, except for
-Organisation environment risks and controls which has an assignment and a 27 hour test to be completed remotely
-Organisational Leadership which is a closed book exam
AND
-Professional Innovation and Development which is a presentation (which can be done remotely over Skype, for example) and reflective diary

Employability

There are planned field trips each term to local organisations. These trips will be accompanied by a seminar from a visiting professor on a related topic.

We also have a guest speaker programme, bringing the working world into the University. These talks are delivered in the block weeks, and presentations are posted on Moodle so that they are available to everyone.

All assignments are grounded in the real working organisations, allowing students to apply their knowledge into a real working environment.

Skills assessment takes place at the start of each term and students are encouraged to create a development plan to enhance their skills and work experience over the duration of the course. Lecturers will support students in finding opportunities to support this wherever possible.

The Leeds programme offers an MA in Deaf Education over two years that combines face-to-face with online learning and support. The programme, approved by the Department for Education (DFE) to offer the Mandatory Qualification for Teachers of the Deaf, integrates cutting-edge research knowledge with practitioner expertise to develop skilled, knowledgeable and critical practitioners.

The programme combines a strong research base with input from highly qualified and experienced practitioners in the field. It is delivered within a research intensive environment that prioritises working partnerships with schools/services and other stakeholders through collaborative research and professional development activities.

Central to the programme is an understanding that the establishment of language fluency and effective communication as a basis for cognitive development and access to the curriculum must be an educational priority for all deaf learners. Individual residual hearing and auditory potential must be carefully evaluated and regularly reappraised in relation to the communicative and educational demands of the context, so that advances in personal hearing technologies and the latest thinking on optimal classroom management can be put into practice.

Unique to this programme is recognition of the plural and diverse linguistic contexts of deaf children’s lives. Through consideration of the roles of sign and spoken languages and increasingly sophisticated hearing technologies in deaf children’s lives and education, you will develop a broad language base and the skills to respond flexibly to deaf children’s dynamic and changing communication needs.

The MA Deaf Education comprises four core modules delivered across two years. Your first module will be either Deafness and Development or Educational Audiology, depending on when you commence your studies.

Educational Audiology explores the full audiological implications of deafness in both social and educational settings. You will develop a knowledge and understanding of the auditory system and gain practical experience of assessment procedures, and the implementation of audiological support programmes. You will gain an understanding of the effective use of all classroom related audiological and amplification systems, and ways in which different technologies maximise the use of audition.

Learning and Teaching considers the implications of deafness for individual learning and achievement, and explores ways in which teaching, learning and assessment opportunities can be maximised to facilitate pupil progress. You will gain a knowledge and understanding of ways in which the environment and the use of technology can contribute to the learning experience. You will develop skills in individual planning and the monitoring and assessment of learning, and how this is shared with other professionals, parents and deaf learners.

Deafness and Development focuses on child and language development and the potential impact of deafness on early childhood experiences and development. You will gain a knowledge and understanding of the language, communication and interaction issues associated with childhood deafness, and implications for cognitive development and social- emotional well-being. You will develop skills in assessing and developing the language of deaf learners and flexible approaches to meeting the language needs of deaf learners in the classroom.

The Context of Deaf Education provides you with an in-depth understanding of the current legislative and educational context for deaf education. This includes current statutory frameworks as well as in-school evaluation and improvement processes. As part of this module you will have the opportunity to broaden your experience of the different types of settings in deaf education and to equip yourself with the knowledge and skills needed to support learners across the range of specialist and mainstream models of provision.

To receive the MA qualification you will also complete a research-based Dissertation. This is an independent piece of work that allows you to study a topic related to your own interests and to make a genuine contribution to the field. This aspect of the programme is supported by an online research methods module, two face-to-face study days, regional tutorials and individual supervision.

If you are working towards the Teacher of the Deaf (ToD) award, you will also build a Professional Skills Portfolio throughout the two years. This applied aspect of the programme allows you to acquire and demonstrate the mandatory teaching, communication and audiological skills required of a ToD.

This course can serve as your entry pathway to the Master of Business Administration (MBA) of which 11 of the 12 required units can be done fully online. It is also a challenging stand-alone course giving you the option to specialise in oil and gas or business or to tailor your studies to suit your needs by choosing from a wide range of business topics.

This course offers you a foundation in leadership studies and business management. You will complete one core unit studying organisational behaviour at an individual, group and organisational level, exploring issues that are changing the way work is conducted, organised and managed today. The rest of your units will depend on your chosen major: oil and gas or business.
