The Master’s Programme in Quantitative Economics and Finance (MiQE/F) offers a high-quality graduate education in economic theory, finance and quantitative methods. Apart from a common set of core courses, our students are able to select from a large menu of elective courses to specialise in economics, finance, or a combination of both. The MiQE/F prepares students for ambitious careers where a solid understanding of the theoretical foundations of economics and finance and a rigorous competence in quantitative methods are required. This combination provides MiQE/F graduates with a competitive advantage on the job market and direct access to highly selective Ph.D. programmes.

Curriculum

The MiQE/F is a research-oriented programme. The objective of the programme is to educate highly-qualified economists with special skills in the area of quantitative methods. The MiQE/F uniquely combines theoretical concepts, quantitative methods and their application to practical problems. On the basis of well-understood theory and methodology, students develop the skills necessary to analyze and solve complex practical problems.

Students need to successfully complete a course load of 90 ECTS in order to graduate with an M.A. HSG in Quantitative Economics and Finance.
In the MiQE/F programme, the compulsory courses mainly focus on economic theory and quantitative methods. This allows you to choose core electives according to your interests and talents and to shape your profile.

In the compulsory courses you will acquire basic methods and a theoretical knowledge of economics, finance and econometrics, as well as mathematics and statistics:

Core electives and specialisations
The core electives involve advanced application- oriented work and problem-solving and allow for various specialisations. The different areas of specialisation include optional courses in econometrics, finance and economics, which are important to prepare for quantitative applications. The three specialisation areas can be flexibly combined. You can choose core electives and will have the possibility to create your profile by specialising within a field of your interest:

• Corporate finance, banking and insurance

Master’s thesis
The topic of the Master’s thesis has to be chosen from the MiQE/F core studies. When writing your thesis, you will be applying the skills you have acquired to explore a special research topic. The thesis must be written in English.

Contextual Studies
Contextual Studies are an opportunity to acquire leadership skills and develop intellectually and culturally beyond the scope of core studies. You are free to choose from Contextual Studies irrespective of your particular Master’s programme.

Double degree and exchange programmes

By choosing the MiQE/F you can benefit from obtaining a double degree from the HSG and an additional leading European university: SSE, Stockholm (exclusively for economics students); ESADE, Barcelona; HEC, Paris; RSM, Rotterdam; and Bocconi, Milan. By choosing the MiQE/F, you will also have the opportunity to apply for the CEMS Master’s in International Management (CEMS MIM). To extend your choice of courses, the University of St.Gallen and the University of Constance (Germany) have agreed to cooperate at the Master’s Level. MiQE/F students thus have the possibility to choose certain courses from the Master’s Programme in International Economic Relations at the University of Constance, and vice versa.
Furthermore, the University of St.Gallen offers exchange programmes for its students with approx. 200 partner universities worldwide.

On this part-time, distance learning course you will learn how to evaluate and interpret different forms of forensic evidence and how to consider its relevance to police investigations. You will study the scientific principles and practical application of the many and varied techniques used to forensically examine different evidence types.

You will learn how to select the most appropriate techniques for different evidence types, how to interpret the results and how to apply critical analysis to determine what that means in terms of evidential value.

The skills and knowledge you will gain on this course will enable you to confidently argue the reasoning behind the interpretation and evaluation of forensic evidence and to demonstrate in a court of law that you are credible as an expert witness.

If you complete all of the modules and a dissertation you will be awarded an MSc. You will normally work on a research project which comprises two to four research assignments and a longer dissertation. Your supervisor will be an expert in your chosen field, and will receive support if necessary from an experienced research supervisor.

As a student in the School of Modern Languages, you will benefit from the Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) Faculty research training programme. You will choose these research modules in consultation with your supervisors.

Up to £250 per year is available to support your attendance at conferences or for archival research. You can also request an inter-library loan allowance.

Delivery

This course is delivered by the School of Modern Languages, with the possibility of joint supervision with other schools. You will mainly be based in Newcastle's city-centre campus. Attendance is flexible and agreed between you and your supervisors depending on the requirements of the research project.

Full-time students are expected to undertake 40 hours of work per week with an annual holiday entitlement of 35 days (including statutory and bank holidays). Part-time study requires a commitment of at least 20 hours per week.

The MLitt incorporates a formal research training component where you will develop your research skills and methodologies. You also complete a portfolio of essays chosen in consultation with your supervisors according to your interests and experience. You then undertake a dissertation of 16,000–24,000 words consisting of a sustained piece of original research.

Facilities Management (FM) is one of the fastest growing professions within the UK providing a holistic, integrated approach to the delivery and management of property and associated support services; enabling both the organisation and individual to pro-actively and effectively manage assets, contents and components for the benefit of the users.

Course Overview

The course offers a stimulating part-time pathway, allowing flexibility for individuals with responsibilities and commitments, to progress to Master’s level within the field of: Facilities, Property and Asset Management. The programme is modular, containing both core and elective options within Part One and a Dissertation; generally work related, in Part Two. The latter is often completed remotely but with full workplace support being provided by an experienced supervision team and specialist University support staff.

This is the only post-graduate F.M. related qualification offered within an educational establishment in Wales and the south-west of England. The programme is eminently suited to those working within or aspiring towards a senior management position, addresses cutting edge, strategic and operational issues that impact upon estates, property, facilities and corporate business services. The current mode of attendance for Part One occurs at the Mount Pleasant campus in Swansea, generally taking place on a Wednesday afternoon, between 2.00pm and 8.00pm.

Existing and past students have entered the programme from a range of specialist discipline areas, including engineering, building services, surveying, hotel services, general business administration, hard and soft F.M. property, project management, town planning, health-care etc. Their employers have included international PLCs, central government, local authorities, professional practices, Universities, Further Education colleges, Housing Associations, outsourced F.M. organisations, Welsh Government Agencies etc.

Modules

Candidates study at a high level, a range of inter-related topics that will typically include:
-Strategic Property Management and Procurement,
-Management of Human and Organisational Resources,
-Building Maintenance and Property Asset Management,
-Services and Energy Performance of Buildings
-Health & Safety Management
-Research Methodology
-Dissertation

Individual modules can be studied on a semester basis to meet an individual or professional body’s CPD requirements, and used to build subsequently onwards to more formal academic qualifications.

Key Features

Effective FM is critical where highly serviced buildings and spaces are provided but has many other applications that embrace the commercial property, housing and business support areas. Many candidates use the programme to enhance their management and business skills whilst underpinning technical and professional subject knowledge, in areas such as the environment, asset management and building technologies, waste management, energy use, health and safety as well as developing core business and people management skills.

Few who currently operate in this fast moving field have received formal training or qualifications within this highly rewarding industry and hence major opportunities exist for Master’s graduates.

Assessment

Assessment is via industry related case study based assignments, some formal examinations, presentations to panels and a dissertation that can be very closely focussed to the candidate’s current employment or area of career aspiration.

Career Opportunities

Most candidates are employed full-time and a number of students past and present have gained considerable career enhancements, as a consequence of their formal studies with the University. The Food and Resource Economics (FRE) Group offers both a research master's degree, the Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Agricultural Economics, and a professional master's degree, the Master of Food and Resource Economics (M.F.R.E.). The M.Sc. is designed for careers where research is a main component, while the M.F.R.E. is designed for careers in industry or government.

In both degrees, coursework provides students with rigorous training in applied economics and quantitative methods. In the M.Sc., students develop specialized research skills by working with faculty throughout UBC on important real-world issues. In the M.F.R.E., students combine applied economics with policy analysis and agribusiness management, enabling them to analyze issues in the food and resource sectors.

FRE faculty members have direct experience working in the food and resource sectors, both domestically and internationally in Europe and Asia, particularly with developing countries.

Master of Fine Arts

The M.F.A. in Design for Theatre is an intensive graduate program intended to prepare students for design in the professional theatre in Canada. The Program can accommodate very few students, and admission is competitive.

Instruction in the M.F.A. Design for Theatre program centres around a core of studio classes emphasizing development of the designers' graphic, conceptual, and research skills. In addition, Design for Theatre students may assist faculty and other practicing designers on projects outside the University, design theatre productions at UBC and elsewhere, and work in film. The program generally takes two or three years to complete, and culminates in a design thesis/theses.

The M.F.A. Directing program is a professionally-oriented intensive graduate program, intended for those who wish to extend and enhance their directing practice. The Directing program can accommodate very few students, and admission is competitive.
