The Faculty of Law of the University of Pretoria, widely known as Africa's Global Law Faculty, forms part of an unsurpassed network of universities from the African continent and abroad, with graduates from its post-graduate programmes filling leading positions across the region. The quality and relevance of the Faculty’s post-graduate programmes are widely acclaimed, and recognised as such by the likes of the United Nations and the African Union through the awarding to the Faculty of its highest honours.

An established suite of cutting edge masters programmes focussed on Africa, addresses themes as diverse as human rights and democratisation, to trade and investment law in Africa. Adding to this selection, the Faculty is now offering a specialised masters programme in extractive industry law in Africa.

A first for the continent, this programme focusses on extractive industries in African from a multi-disciplinary perspective, with a particular emphasis on the law aspects associated with contemporary oil, gas and mineral extraction. In addition to lectures presented by eminent academics and practitioners in this field of law, the learning experience is enhanced, as never before, by comprehensively incorporating aspects of macro- and micro economics and management, finance, mining engineering and earth sciences. The student experience is further enriched by field visits to operational mines and extractive industry operations, related organisations and institutions.

The aim, as with other masters programmes presented by the Faculty, is to deliver graduates who have a comprehensive and holistic understanding of all relevant aspects of the extractive industries in Africa, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to take on the toughest challenges with which they will be presented. Tailor-made in Africa, for students who will be working in Africa, the ambition is nothing short of grooming the next generation of industry and government leaders, who will be at the vanguard of unlocking the riches of the continent in a way that can change the future of Africa's countries and her people for the best.

As such, it will be of particular interest to candidates from legal practice who work with the extractive industries, the judiciary, government officials, legislators, policymakers, international organisations, consultancies, industry regulators and research institutes. The programme also provides an excellent foundation for recent graduates on which to prepare for a career in this dynamic and exciting field.

A maximum of 25 students is selected for admission per year. In order to allow for the greatest flexible learning experience and to accommodate working professionals, the course consists of a blend of intensive, on-campus contact sessions throughout the year, and distance learning modules.

The programme uniquely contextualises the study within the petroleum industry from beginning to end, ensuring that our graduates can "hit the ground running" in management roles in the industry when they leave. The programme draws on the globally recognised expertise of the staff within the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP).

CEPMLP achieved a high research rating in the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise as part of the submission from the University's Law Unit of Assessment. Methods of Teaching and Assessment

The programme will be delivered on campus using a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, guest speakers and computer-based simulations. Learning is also facilitated and supported using an electronic virtual learning environment (VLE). The VLE has a number of learning tools to help you successfully advance through the programme of studies and communicate with other students.

Assessment of your modules will commonly comprise both the successful completion of an examination and the preparation of a research paper or management report. The examinations take place at set periods in the academic year at the end of each of our three semesters, usually in December, April and June.

Core modules on the course will cover a variety of issues connected to corporate social responsibility, including international standards and regulations, managing local content, the Global Compact, stakeholder engagement strategies and the triple bottom line in corporate sustainability. Also covered will be issues such as supply chain management, building value through value chain analysis and effective monitoring and evaluation approaches.

Modules specific to the two different exit routes will cover the following:

Those undertaking the energy route will examine the relationship of energy to issues around global and national security and conflict management. The impact of energy on health from the perspective of those both working inside the energy sector and those outside it who are affected by its operations will also be studied.

Those undertaking the sustainable development route will examine the impact of globalisation on communities, how to manage community development projects and developing leadership skills.

All students will study research design and methodology in preparation for the dissertation. Research highlights

In our research, we work closely with industry partners internationally. We have faculty with world-renowned expertise in hydrometallurgy, sustainability, nanomaterials, biomaterials and ceramics. Recent research developments in the department are helping to reduce environmental impact in the mining industry and enabling new possibilities in medical treatments. We also have a leading role in MagNet, an initiative that aims to achieve significant reductions in carbon dioxide emissions in the transportation sector. We have a long history of providing excellence in education and offer one of the top-rated materials programs in North America. This programme will provide you with the necessary training and skills to undertake professional employment in the civil, environmental, engineering geology, geotechnical engineering and mining-related industries. It also provides specialist knowledge in tunnel, surface and underground excavation design, and applied hydrogeology and risk assessment.

Taught modules take place at the Camborne School of Mines(CSM) over two semesters and individual projects are undertaken throughout the summer, often as industrial placements. The programme is suitable for geology and engineering graduates wishing to specialise in applied geotechnics.

This degree is professionally accredited under licence from the Engineering Council, as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng (Hons) undergraduate first degree.

Programme Structure

You can either study the course full time over a year or part-time over 3 years.

Compulsory modules

The compulsory modules can include; Project and Dissertation; Excavation and Geomechanics; Health and Safety in the Extractive Industry and Project Management

Optional modules

Some examples of the optional modules are; Resource Estimation; Economics, Processing & Environment; Hydrogeology; Surface Excavation Design; Tunnelling and Underground Excavation; Production and Cost Estimation; Mine Planning and Design; Geomechanics Computer Modelling for Excavation Design and Soil and Water Contamination.

Learning and teaching

The taught part of the programme is structured into two terms. Field visits and practical field-based assignments are used, where appropriate, to emphasise key areas within each module.

The project is undertaken from June to September, after the second semester examinations. You are encouraged to undertake projects directly linked with industry, which may result in industrial placements for the project period. The projects are normally design-based and allow further specialisation in a topic that is of particular interest to you. This could involve the use of state-of-the-art engineering design software, risk and hazard analysis and other analytical techniques.

For the award of the Masters (MSc), you must pass four modules and complete a project and dissertation. To obtain a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip), you must pass two modules and a project with dissertation.
