A postgraduate degree in Translation Studies is of the highest value. Not only will it equip you with professional level translation skills in international dialogues, enabling you to play your part in developing a global community, it will also give you an opportunity to fine-tune your communication skills and awareness of the wide range of challenges and opportunities that arise every time intercultural dialogue occurs.
Recent research has shown that the fall in the number of language learners over the past decade has come at a big cost to the UK economy. While we may be able to continue to trade and to develop partnerships with countries, regions and companies whose first language is English, we’ve been cutting ourselves off from large swathes of the new markets emerging in East Asia, in Latin America, and in West Africa, to name but three regions. This trend has had an impact even at EU level, according to a recent CFA Skills report. The reasons for this recent decline in language learning are varied, but the tide is turning as Scottish and UK business and industry recognises the benefits of speaking the languages of truly global trade.

Course objectives

The Master’s in Translation Studies has a strong focus on practical translation and on specific situations in which people communicate with one another across different cultures. We offer the following languages: Chinese, French, German, Polish, Russian and Spanish (available subject to demand and availability).
The course provides extensive practical translation work on a theme or topic of your choice. It is structured so that you can have considerable flexibility in choosing what areas of translation you wish to specialise in, as you build up a portfolio of translations with your tutor. You may also choose to undertake an extended translation as part of your final dissertation and will be given an opportunity to examine some of the key topics in contemporary Translation Studies.
Students on the course examine some major debates surrounding the opportunities and problems that arise when people from different cultures communicate and translate, through seminars led by experts in the field of intercultural communication. There will also be some opportunity for work-based study and exercises, as well as a chance to develop your skills using translation software packages.
If you wish to study for a PhD subsequently, you have the opportunity to demonstrate you have attained a level that prepares you for a higher research degree. And for candidates of a suitable level, there is an opportunity to continue in Stirling with a practice-led doctorate involving translation.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your English language skills:
- IELTS: 6.5 with 6.0 minimum in each skill
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): Grade C
- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): Grade B
- Pearson Test of English (Academic): 60 with 56 in each component

Delivery and assessment

You will attend seminars and workshop sessions which will focus on translation theories, cultural translation and transfer, but also on the practical activity of translation. One of the modules in the autumn semester will also feature a site visit to one of our partner institutions which engages in cultural translation, broadly construed. Assessment will include essays, reports (which may take the form of written documents, websites or PowerPoint presentations), the portfolio of translation, and the dissertation.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

From day one you’ll write songs, using alternative strategies designed to work alongside your current creative approaches. Applying practice-based learning at our world-heritage research centres, through a range of creative strategies and critical perspective on your songs’ relationship with audience and industry, you’ll develop and focus your output.

Having stretched the range of creative options available to you within your own artistic palette, you’ll turn your hand to research; this is your entry to the post-graduate world. You’ll identify the industrial context relevant to your songs; your knowledge of your field will become intensified through primary research, secondary research and contact with guest speakers from industry.

Collaborating with songwriters from near and far will increase your creative and networking range; ahead of your Major Project contextual and collaborative research perform the vital tasks of shaping your song outputs.

TEACHING METHODS

The Distance Learning option is a blended learning design which combines formal online lectures with regular personal tutorials. PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Our MSc Entrepreneurship programme is designed for those planning to set up their own businesses, or work in high-growth areas of large organisations where competitive advantage depends on the successful harnessing of creativity and innovation.

In this context, the programme develops essential entrepreneurial skills such as business planning, business modelling, pitching and working in a digital environment. Students will also have the opportunity to work in entrepreneurial teams, guided by a mentor, to simulate the experience of setting up a business for an original idea.

The programme encourages ‘learning by doing’ to develop the attributes, ways of thinking and behaviour of an entrepreneur. At the end of the year this culminates in a final research project to develop an individual business plan or consulting project.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The programmes aim to provide a high quality education that is intellectually rigorous and up-to-date, as well as relevant to the needs of future entrepreneurs whether they are inside existing organisations or starting up companies.

Modules provide a theoretical framework and practical skills that aspiring entrepreneurs need in order to cope with an increasingly complex and dynamic business world in which we live. The programmes provide the students with the basis for developing their own approach to learning and personal development.

The compulsory modules aim to provide not only a rigorous treatment of the relevant theory, but also the quantitative techniques necessary to understand the literature and undertake empirical investigations in the areas of entrepreneurship.

The UK has a mature and highly successful TV industry with exports of programmes and formats worth over £1.3 billion annually. Broadcasting is still an expanding industry in many parts of the world, and is a crucial driver for the creative and cultural industries more generally. This course provides the wide perspectives and specific skills that are essential for success in the broadcasting industry.

This innovative course examines the different ways in which broadcasting is organised around the world. It has a particular emphasis on the production techniques of British television, approaching them through a comparative international lens. Students study a major BBC drama series in depth (currently the Saturday evening series Casualty) from conception, through to scripting and production organisation. The course includes visits to the production base in Cardiff as well as crucial skills training in the industry-standard MovieMagic budget and schedule software.

Each student takes creative control of their own television or radio production to complete the course. The Media Arts department’s extensive range of industry-standard equipment, our TV production studio, state-of-the-art Mac Labs and location store (all of which has recently benefited from a £100,000 investment), is available to all students and training is provided in using it as part of the course.

Located near London, the course provides students with a privileged insight into the production practices of the UK television industry. You will have guest lecturers from both production and management in the broadcasting industry. The wide range of past guest lecturers include:

Department research and industry highlights

The Media Arts department at Royal Holloway has a vibrant production culture. Most staff members have substantial production experience in TV and cinema. Around 300 undergraduate and 60 postgraduate students every year are engaged in making their own productions, including MA International Television Industries students.

Staff include the feature film director John Roberts (War of the Buttons, Day of the Flowers), award-winning documentary maker Marc Isaacs (All White in Barking, The Road), former controller of BBC1 and head of BBC Drama, Jonathan Powell.

The industry -

Shipping is a key link in the global supply chain and accounts for over 95 per cent of all imports and exports. With the growing demand of a global population, levels of international trade have dramatically increased over the last four decades. In the UK alone, this translates to a contribution of around £31 billion for the UK economy and the maritime industry is responsible for one in every 50 jobs. With the world shipping fleet growing at just under 4 per cent per year and anticipated annual growth in seaborne trade demand currently sitting at 3-4 per cent, opportunities in this industry continue to be as diverse and numerous as the cargo it carries.

The programme -

This interdisciplinary course combines traditional MBA content with elements that are unique to the world of shipping and maritime business. Students study all aspects of the maritime industry, exploring the global business environment and developing a greater understanding of the complex interactions between shipping companies, port authorities, businesses and governments.

Business modules cover a range of topics including advanced strategic planning, international marketing and scalable project management methodologies. Students will then apply this newly gained knowledge to a group consultancy project, working in teams to solve real workplace issues.
Maritime units look at global supply chain and logistics management, using this as a context from which to explore fundamental principles of international trade; investment risk; finance and maritime law.

Students will also enhance their research and analytical skills on specialist research units. These units prepare students for a major research project, where they will carry out original research into a specific area of the maritime industry. This project is a good opportunity to specialise knowledge, with many graduates using their research as a springboard for future careers.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

The course’s taught content is delivered through a combination of workshops, seminars, case studies, problem-solving sessions, group projects and work based assignments. Students will also have the opportunity to work alongside relevant maritime organisations, developing solutions for real business problems.

Work experience -

Students develop their business and management skills to the highest standard with a curriculum that emphasises real world learning. Students are also encouraged to attend optional events including research seminars, open lectures and visits to industry-related sites.

Full time students are able to take part in activity weeks, undertaking group learning projects and self-directed activities related to the coursework.

COURSE CONTENT

The first year of the Master is a fulltime year in Grenoble or London.
The program covers four key areas of study for Marketers, each of the 19 modules follow a logical connection to the one before.

Integrative Marketing Case Study

Using an existing business, the “Live Business Case” will provide the students with the opportunity to pull together all the aspects of the program. Students will analyze a marketing problem in the Company and use their skills and knowledge to solve issues and propose solutions. This takes place in small groups and in a limited time. Assessment for the case study will be based on a group assignment with a group presentation to the Company.

At the end of the one-year full time part of the program, each student will be required to complete a Final Management Project of approximately 20,000 words in length, under the guidance of a GGSB tutor.

To successfully complete the Final Management Project, you are required to address a particular research question or knowledge gap in the field of your study. This will be business oriented and coherent with your program's objectives. A student may choose to write his/her project on a topic grounded in his/her internship experience.
