You will learn about management decision-­making, the significance and complexity of managing human and financial resources, and the critical issues involved in marketing international tourism and travel.

All our programmes are underpinned by an emphasis on the impact of globalisation for the international tourism industry, and a critical evaluation of ethical and social responsibility in business, and tourist behaviour.

The School of Sport and Service Management, where the course is based, is an affiliate member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) which informs our teaching and your learning. We are also a member of the UNWTO Knowledge Network, which will give you access to the extensive UNWTO e-library.

The course is suitable if you are looking to convert from another subject area and pursue a future career in tourism or if you already have a grounding in tourism or related subject areas such as business, management, events, hospitality or sport.

Course structure

The course is delivered by staff that are actively involved in research and consultancy, ensuring that the curriculum and classroom discussions are informed by current knowledge and practice in the management of international tourism.

Full-time students normally attend class two days per week, while part-time students usually attend once per week. Some modules may be delivered intensively over several consecutive days.The course is delivered through a variety of lectures, workshops, presentations, tutorials and case studies with an emphasis on interactive learning.

A distinctive feature of postgraduate study within the school is the flexibility and choice provided by the final project. Guided by your programme of study and in consultation with an individual supervisor, there are several options open to you. Whether undertaking an academic dissertation, an applied piece of research such as a business or enterprise project or a study that includes a portfolio or exhibition of work, the final project enables you to pursue your own particular interest in an area relevant to your programme of study.

For international students, the MSc also offers an extended masters route with English language study for between two and sixth months before the course begins.

Tourism is a global sector, and so international perspectives will be at the heart of your learning experience. Professional-Based Learning Module:

All credit-based postgraduate courses at the School of Sport and Service Management offer the Professional-Based Learning module.

The module offers you an opportunity to undertake practical experience in a work environment and gain invaluable first-hand knowledge. It is designed to help you engage with the process of planning and delivering expertise in practice, and to reflect upon and take steps to improve your academic, personal and professional skills.

In Semester 1 (September–January) you will have classes on CV development, interview skills, target setting, reflective practice and experiential learning, leading to 100 hours of professional experience in Semester 2 (February–June). This experience could take the form of a part-time job, an unpaid internship, a volunteering opportunity in the university or time as a mentee in your chosen industry. You can also take this module as part of a live consultancy in connection with one of your tourism, sport, hospitality or event modules, either in the UK or a School of Sport and Service Management project overseas.

Research-Rich Learning

As a master’s student you’ll develop your research skills to a new and higher level. Your research supervisor will help you submit a proposal for your master’s dissertation or consultancy project which will be specific to the disciplines of logistics and supply chain management. You will then discuss its development with your supervisor through to completion in the final semester.

If you decide on a master’s consultancy project, rather than a dissertation, you’ll still undertake primary and desk research. Through your reading, reflection and research, you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief.

Audencia and the Glasgow School of Art

Rather than putting pre-existing management and creative classes on a schedule to form a so-called “new” programme, Audencia and the GSA’s Institute of Design Innovation have jointly designed a customised programme of classes and projects that respond to emerging trends, circumstances and opportunities within the global creative economy.

Every aspect of the programme combines learning in business and management with creative processes and people. Designing Today will help you develop a critical appreciation of the role of design practice and of designers as drivers of social, economic and organisational change. Your final project will be an exhibition. Topics include:

- Exploring service design and organisational design tools and methods
- Seeing social interaction as value creation
- Considering the contemporary role of designers in the area of management: industrial, experience and knowledge economies
- Understanding design not simply as the manufacture of industrial artefacts, but as an activity that creates value

Designing research:

Within Designing Research, you’ll develop an understanding of user-centred design as an ethnographic and engagement-led process of iterative development built upon collaborative working practices and creative refinement and resolution that responds to a variety of contexts. You’ll be evaluated via a project process journal and reflective writing. Components include:

- Formulating design enquiries (open-ended, empirically validated and discursive) that create the possibility of new knowledge and innovative practices or behaviours
- Methods: critical observation, ethnography, STEP analysis, future casting

From idea to application:

From Idea to Application will help you internalise design practice as the material manifestation and evolution of value propositions. You’ll move from collaborative concept generation to product proposal, refinement and validation as understood across a variety of value regimes: manufacture and supply chain, branding and communication, user experience, etc.

The focus will be on the blend of industrial and digital artefacts, experience of use and the cognitive and narrative dimensions of innovative products and their collaborative production.

You’ll be evaluated through a project presentation and exhibition.

International winter school:

Led by the Institute of Design Innovation, the Winter School is an exemplar of our progressive teaching style and offers a method of research and learning that is both bespoke and distinct. The Winter School brings together international students and academics to fashion a new role for design in the exploration of a contemporary challenge during an intense two-week period.

Leading design academics and students from Köln International School of Design (KISD) and Copenhagen’s KADK (The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation) will join students and academics of the GSA, Audencia and other institutions from around the globe, forming an international network of diverse disciplines.

This component of the course offers a unique opportunity to examine current issues in a transcultural environment at the GSA’s stunning new campus in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and workshops. As this is a master’s course there is a major element of independent learning and self-motivated reflection.

During the second year you’ll spend a whole semester studying in another country. We organise exchanges with universities in Europe, Asia and the Americas, allowing you to take your international experience to another level. You’ll deepen your understanding of relevant topics and there may also be studies related to the language and culture of the host region. On your return you’ll complete your dissertation or consultancy project, which will be specific to operations, logistics and supply chain management.

The growth of the arts and the creative industries has created a need for well qualified arts administrators. This MA has the potential to shape a new breed of professionals in the arts management field by offering Liberal Arts, Humanities, Fine Arts, Film, Media and Communication graduates the opportunity to acquire the appropriate management and business skills, thus enabling them to capitalize upon their previous grounding within the arts.

Thanks to AUR’s connections and collaborations with numerous artistic and cultural institutions both in Rome and in Italy, this MA also offers the opportunity to gain invaluable professional experience. Rome and Italy are especially attractive for the study of arts, in general, and arts management in particular, given enormous resources that are available to scholars, art world professionals and students. Italy has a long and rich tradition of collecting, sponsoring and exhibiting visual arts. A special advantage available to students of Arts Management in Italy is a possibility to study some of the world’s oldest private collections and a specific system of patronage in the arts. The range of potential responsibilities of arts administrators requires a graduate program which will give future art managers in depth knowledge about the structure of the contemporary art world, the nature of artistic and cultural values in general in connection to their market value, a solid knowledge of the business and market principles, in their application to the sphere of artistic and cultural production, as well as high level skills that will make future professionals in the arts management desirable candidates for a variety of posts in particular institutions of the art world, such as museums, galleries, art fairs and media reporting on art and analyzing the current artistic scene. The AUR’s MA in Arts Management enables students to acquire basic skills in the fundamental areas of art management and art administration, giving them an opportunity, through the selection of elective courses and internship experience to specialize in a particular area of their interest.

This course is designed for graduates with a background in business or business related studies, who wish to specialise in HRM with a view to pursuing a career as an HRM practitioner either as a functional specialist or in other areas of management which involves significant people management responsibilities. On completion you will have developed as a manager of people by learning specialist knowledge and the application of theory and practice in the main specialist areas which comprise HRM.

Various approaches are offered to meet the needs of both full and part-time students. The course is delivered to part-time students over two three-day intensive blocks in the evenings, meaning each module will be completed within a six-week period.

Substantial use is made of distance learning through the University's Virtual Learning Environment, and a wide range of academic journals and texts are available in both paper and electronic formats. Tutorials allow you to reflect on lecture materials and benefit from discussion and group work.

The International Management, Legislation and Society program aims to give students an education that enables them to adapt quickly to an international environment, whilst understanding the dynamics, and knowing how to effectively identify solutions to managerial problems.

Learning objectives

The curriculum presents two types of courses: subjects relating to the basic disciplines (business, economic, and law), and subjects relating to business issues and problems typically associated with the processes of internationalization of firms. This is done to balance traditional knowledge of management with the specialization and the development of specific internationalization-oriented skills. In addition to traditional business disciplines, there are courses that intend to develop the capability to work in different social and cultural contexts, and to review, develop and implement internationalization of firms.

Programme modules

- Manufacturing System and Process Modelling
The objective of this module is to provide an understanding of manufacturing and its management that recognises breadth and depth of required resources and information. This is done through developing an understanding of the hierarchy of computer based modelling relevant to manufacturing, ranging from the detail of material behaviour in processed parts, through macroscopic process models to the integration of processes within manufacturing systems and higher level business processes.

- Lean and Agile Manufacture
This module allows students to gain an understanding of lean and agile concepts in the manufacturing business, including its distribution chains. Students will learn to specify, design and evaluate an appropriate lean or agile business system.

- Engineering Management and Business Studies
The aim of the module is to introduce the concepts of management techniques that are applicable to running an engineering company. Students will learn to evaluate commercial risk, plan and organise engineering activities for improved company effectiveness and communicate technical and business information to ensure maximum impact.

- Product Information Systems – Product Lifecycle Management
The objectives of this module are for students to understand and critically evaluate the emerging product information systems for designers in the form of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems. Students will learn to use modern information and process modelling techniques to define the information integration and workflow requirements of a PLM configuration.

- The Innovation Process and Project Management
Students will establish a clear overview of the innovation process and an understanding of the essential elements within it. They will learn strategies for planning and carrying out innovative projects in any field.

- Sustainable Development: The Engineering Context
This module provides students with an understanding of the principles and practices of sustainable development and to provide them with an understanding of how engineers can help manufacturing businesses develop into more sustainable enterprises.

- Advanced Manufacturing Processes and Automation
Students will gain an in-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, processes and technologies. They will learn to understand and critically evaluate advanced manufacturing processes and technologies, assessing their advantages and disadvantages.

- Additive Manufacturing
The module will introduce and develop the concepts of Additive Manufacturing (AM) and demonstrate the different AM techniques available at Loughborough University. The module will emphasise the strengths and weaknesses of the various technologies and highlight applications and case studies from the AM industry.

- Projects
In addition to the taught modules, all students undertake an individual major project. Part-time students normally undertake a major project that is based on the needs of their employing company.

How you will learn

You will learn through a carefully balanced combination of lectures, in-class guided workshops, hands-on computer modelling and independent research. Following eight taught modules, students pursue an individual project typically based on the diverse range of industrially focused manufacturing research strengths within the School. Part time students may base their projects on particular needs of their current employer.

Examinations are in January and May / June with coursework throughout the programme. The project is assessed by written report, presentation and exhibition.

Careers and further study

Within national or multinational manufacturing industry companies working as a Manufacturing Engineer, Project Engineer, Systems Analyst or Software Development Specialist. Graduates may also study for an MPhil or PhD with the School’s research groups.

Scholarships

The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a country outside the European Union. These scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.
