MA Contemporary Textiles is an award within the MA Art and Design programme at the School of Creative Arts. Within the postgraduate programme there is strong emphasis on professional practice and the real-world applications of art and design. You will develop key research skills and gain a good understanding of the work of other practitioners in your field.

Contemporary textiles has emerged as an innovative area of practice for artists, designers and makers, testing the boundaries of more traditional areas of art practice. This course gives you the opportunity to explore areas such as textiles and new materials, textiles and performance, and the connections between contemporary textiles, fashion and interior design. It provides students with an environment that encourages individuality and explores the breadth and diversity of contemporary textile practice. Students employ a wide range of traditional and innovative methods and techniques and through research and experimentation, build on skills already established to develop the personal identity of their practice.

The aim of the postgraduate programme is to equip you with the skills, knowledge and understanding required to practice at an advanced level, to foster your creativity and enhance your employment opportunities. You will work alongside artists and designers who are involved with a wide variety of media and forms. Induction, seminars and social events for students and staff mean that you will be part of a friendly and supportive postgraduate community, which also includes film makers, musicians and professionals working in new media.

Recent practitioners in contemporary textiles have explored performance-based work and film and lens-based media, combined textiles with digital media, and, as one of eight MAs, this course is well placed to help you question conventions and challenge the boundaries of contemporary textile practice. Our staff are experienced in research and professional practice, and you will also benefit from contributions from visiting artists, makers, curators and involvement with our international exhibitions programme.

Teaching methods

The programme is centered on individual practice and encourages critical dialogue between traditions, disciplines and media. The practice modules develop individual practice through a combination of work-in-progress seminars, tutorials and gallery visits and discussions. A sustained body of creative work forms the basis of assessment, supported by written documentation and assignments. MA and MFA students complete the same modules during the course except that MFA students complete an extra project module. You find a project partner, agree a brief and then deliver the project to a professional standard.

We rely on three types of professors: Masters, who are major figures in the European photography scene; professors, who are international artists and theorists of renowned academic quality in the field of photography and visual arts; andtutors, who represent a new generation of photographers with academic and project experience. A fundamental element of the Master’s academics is its orientation towards personal projects and exhibition, as well as personalized assistance. Throughout the process, the close experience with professors and tutors is one of the most enriching aspects of the program.

The program’s academics are characterized by their nature of encompassing and concretizing a subject from an initial idea, promoting research, reflection and discussion, and materializing the entire process of creating an artistic piece to be presented in a collective exhibit and catalog. As well, three students will opt to exhibit their work in one of the European centers and festivals connected with the course. Classes include the discussion of texts; projections of the authors’ images and videos; visits to exhibits and artists’ studios; and individual and group exercises.
The importance of the personal project in the Master’s requires the participation of specialized tutors to help students develop their work in a personalized way. Technical tutoring involves large-scale, digital laboratories, analog laboratories, printing, and coaching in research and communication of the artistic process.

Module structure
- Challenging Behaviour
This module explores challenging behaviour from a variety of perspectives and provides you with an overview of individual and contextual factors which may influence children and young people's behaviour. During seminar workshops you will discuss theoretical perspectives in relation to problematising children and young people's social, emotional and mental health. Particular attention will be paid to 'causes' of challenging behaviour, individual and whole school approaches to managing behaviour and the importance of recognising pupil voice and increasing pupil participation. You will be encouraged to reflect on, and critique, alternative educational provisions.

- Action Research (double module)
You will determine the content of the sessions by focusing on the inquiries selected by both yourself and others, adopting a 'learning set' approach. Group seminars and workshops will provide a structured introduction to action research followed by the development of small working groups to support the stages of individual projects and provide peer group support. Your tutor will signpost you to relevant academic theory and research and support material from the MA in Education online resources.

Teaching and learning

The first module, 'Challenging Behaviour', requires regular evening attendance (seven evening sessions) in the Autumn and this is followed by a double action research module in which you will complete a research project in your own school based on work with children / young people with behaviour difficulties.

This research project will be supported by six workshops between January and June, and individual tutorial support based around your particular project.

Cognitive neuropsychology is a branch of cognitive psychology that aims to understand how the structure and function of the brain relates to specific psychological processes. It places a particular emphasis on studying the cognitive effects of brain injury and neurological illness with a view to inferring models of normal cognitive functioning.

Evidence is based on case studies of individual brain damaged patients who show deficits in specific brain areas and from patients who exhibit double dissociations between cognitive impairments. From these studies, and from studies of functional brain imaging, researchers can infer the components of the cognitive system that are responsible for our ability to remember, perceive and communicate.

Our MSc Cognitive Neuropsychology provides you with an advanced education in the core areas of cognitive neuropsychological research, plus knowledge of appropriate statistical methodology and neuropsychological research methods. You study topics including:

The Social and Health Psychology Group work on motivations, needs, intercultural contact, and sexual attraction. Recent projects include the impacts of living and studying abroad, and how personal relative deprivation is linked to problem gambling.

The Cognitive and Sensory Neuroscience Group research brain function and human behaviour. Recently they have been working on projects on the neural processes underlying language production, how motivations are communicated through tone of voice, and how the brain performs 3D vision. They previously developed the BioAid mobile phone app that turns an iPhone into a biologically inspired hearing aid.

Course detail

The Aberystwyth Masters in Fine Art provide you with an excellent opportunity to develop your artistic skills, understanding and technical aptitudes as you strive to pursue your art. In every area of this course, technical, stylistic, and conceptual experimentation is enthusiastically encouraged. You will also be able to participate in ‘Forum’ seminars to communicate orally and critically about your own and colleagues’ works. You will also have the opportunity to submit articles for publication to contextualize your practice and develop your engagement with critical and public opinion. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework assessment (2014) it was found that 75% of publications were of an internationally recognised standard or higher.

Upon graduation from the Masters in Fine Art, you will have demonstrated artistic excellence, personal rigor and critical engagement with your own and the work of other artists, which will define you as an artist. You will be well-prepared for the realities – both creative and practical – of life as a professional artist.

Format

The course is a full-time programme, taught over one year, and is divided into two parts over three semesters. In part one, you will study a number of core modules, together worth a total of 120 credits, whilst directing your own study in part two where you will explore and resolve your chosen artistic problem, culminating in the second of your two public exhibitions. This study is equivalent to a Master’s dissertation project and is worth 60 credits.

The subject of this final public exhibition will be agreed in consultation with your supervisor(s) and, in tackling it, you will be encouraged to develop and sustain a self-initiated programme of work. Subject to the satisfactory completion of the study modules and exhibition, the Masters in Fine Art is awarded. Contact time is approximately 10-14 hours a week in the first two semesters. During semester three you will arrange your level of contact time with your assigned supervisor.

Assessment

The taught part of the course (Part 1) is delivered and assessed through lectures, student seminars, practical exercises and exhibitions. Successful completion of your exhibition (Part 2) leads to the award of an MA.

Aberystwyth University’s Fine Art and Art History course features a number of modules which will encourage you to direct your studies into areas of art which particularly fascinate you. This course of study is designed to enable you to delve deeply into your chosen specialism, whether that focuses on specific materials, styles, time periods or locations. The School of Art at Aberystwyth provides supervision and specialist knowledge in a huge range of subjects including British art, ceramics, contemporary painting, graphic arts (including book illustration and much more), Nineteenth Century European Art, museum and gallery studies, the visual culture of Religion, Wales and Art, and Women’s Art, Crafts and Design.

Most staff of the School of Art are practising artists and art historians who have exhibited and published widely in their field. Course detail

The Aberystwyth MA in Fine Art and Art History provide you with an excellent opportunity to develop your artistic skills, understanding and technical aptitudes as you strive to pursue your art. In every area of this course, technical, stylistic, and conceptual experimentation is enthusiastically encouraged and you will be encouraged to contribute to the School’s academic knowledge of art history through your own research. You will also have the opportunity to submit articles for publication to contextualize your practice and develop your engagement with critical and public opinion. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework assessment (2014) it was found that 75% of publications were of an internationally recognised standard or higher.

One of the central strengths of this course is your personal development as an artist. You will be challenged to experiment, test hypotheses, and extend your field of action in preparation for exhibitions. You will develop a portfolio of work that is a creative and imaginative interpretation of subject matter demonstrating the acquisition and refinement of technological dexterity and stylistic sophistication. You will also benefit from gaining new insight into careers in fine art, defining concepts of the subject and the crucial importance of professional identity.

Upon graduation from the MA in Fine Art and Art History, you will have demonstrated artistic excellence, personal rigor and critical engagement with yours and others’ work, which will define you as an artist. You will be well-prepared for the realities – both creative and practical – of life as a professional artist.

Format

The course is a full-time programme, taught over one year, and is divided into two parts over three semesters. In part one, you will study a number of core modules, together worth a total of 120 credits, whilst directing your own study in part two where you will explore and resolve your chosen artistic problem, culminating in the second of your two public exhibitions. This study is equivalent to a Master’s dissertation project and is worth 60 credits.

The subject of this final public exhibition will be agreed in consultation with your supervisor(s) and, in tackling it, you will be encouraged to develop and sustain a self-initiated programme of work. Subject to the satisfactory completion of the study modules and exhibition, the MA in Fine Art and Art History is awarded. Contact time approximately 10-14 hours a week in the first two semesters. During semester three you will arrange your level of contact time with your assigned supervisor.

Assessment

The taught part of the course (Part 1) is delivered and assessed through lectures, student seminars, practical exercises and exhibitions. Successful completion of your exhibition (Part 2) leads to the award of an MA.

‌This course is for people who want to develop a specialism in glass, making use of the outstanding facilities at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland. We don’t require previous study of glass, but most students have experience in a subject related to art and design.

This course will help you develop a synergy of creative ideas and technical skills. You might focus on one of the three main areas: hot glass, kiln glass, or architectural glass - or combine approaches, and in doing so establish yourself as a professional glass artist. You will be using world-class facilities, and have access to 26 glass kilns, a state-of-the-art water-jet cutter, a hot glass workshop, two cold working studios, a glass mould-making workshop, architectural glass studio and glass and ceramics print studio.

We do not have a ‘house style’; instead, you will be encouraged and supported to develop your own focus. You will be encouraged to develop your independent creativity, improve your technical skills through expert support, and develop academic skills in research and communication.

During the course, we encourage you to develop your personal practice through studio work, critical studies, professional practice, research, critiques, analysis and questioning.

You’ll be joining the largest glass and ceramics department in Europe, made up of an international team of creative and experienced educators and practitioners.
