This was the first course to be accredited by the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr), the national register for qualified sport and exercise nutritionists. Academically challenging, vocationally relevant and underpinned by evidence-based practice, it focuses on the study of nutrition in relation to sport and exercise.

You will gain a thorough understanding of the multidisciplinary aspects of sport and exercise nutrition, and on completion you will be able to apply for graduate registration with the SENr.

Whether you aspire to work in high-performance sport or in the promotion of physical activity, exercise and good health practices among the general population or in specific communities, nutrition workshops and applied sessions will provide you with the opportunities to develop your practical skills and apply your expertise. If you would like to gain additional practical experience alongside your academic study, you will be able to apply for an internship in an applied sport science setting, working with elite athletes under the guidance of a registered SENr practitioner.

ASSESSMENT

Modules are assessed through a mix of coursework assignments, case studies, examinations, laboratory reports and presentations appropriate to the programme. Each module is assessed through the equivalent of 4,000 words.

The programme is designed to provide graduates with training in sport and exercise nutrition which will equip them for future careers in research, teaching in higher education, in industry, or in applied sports nutrition support. It is not a substitute for a dietetic qualification.

Sound knowledge of sport and exercise nutrition can therefore ensure a healthy balance between exercise and diet for a range of athletes, from amateur to elite levels within different sports. This programme provides a postgraduate pathway for graduates who are interested in pursuing a career in the area of sport and exercise nutrition. As an accredited course, the programme achieves the competencies required for graduate registration with the British Dietetic Association (BDA) Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr) meaning those students graduating with the PgDip/MSc are automatically eligible to register with the SENr as a graduate registrant.

About

The programme is delivered by blended learning (combined distance learning and on campus modules). Students enrolled for the PgDip Sport and Exercise Nutrition course need to undertake modules to a total of 120 credit points and for the MSc undertake an additional research project of 60 credit points. Modules studied will include: nutrition and exercise metabolism, nutritional assessment, recommendations and requirements, sport-specific nutrition issues, research design and biostatistics, nutrition for health and disease prevention, evidence-based practice in healthcare sciences, practical sports nutrition and the sport and exercise nutrition research project.

Attendance

Full-time

The full-time programme (over 1 calendar year; i.e. three academic semesters) is comprised of taught modules in semester one and two and the research project which is completed in semester three. All semester one modules are delivered by distance-learning. In semester two, one 30 credit point module is delivered by distance-learning with the remaining two 15 credit point modules being delivered as face-to-face modules at the Jordanstown campus.

Part-time

In part-time mode, all modules in year one, and semester one of year two are delivered by distance-learning. In semester two of year two students will attend the Jordanstown campus for the remaining two 15 credit point modules which are delivered as face-to-face modules. As for full-time students, students taking the programme in part-time mode who progress to the MSc (and depending upon the nature of their project work chosen) will opt to undertake their MSc research project work either on-campus (at either the Jordanstown or Coleraine campus) or may complete their project work in the work-place (subject to approval by the project module co-ordinator).

This programme achieves the competencies required for graduate registration of the British Dietetic Association (BDA) Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr).

Teaching and learning

Teaching is organised on a module-credit basis, with each module requiring approximately 36 hours of staff contact time and 200 hours of total student input in each 12-week semester.

The main theme of the teaching and learning aspect of this MSc is to encourage you to develop the necessary skills to understand and communicate advanced theoretical and research-based knowledge of nutrition to people who participate in sport and exercise. Learning methods reflect the wide variety of topics associated with applied sport and exercise nutrition and include lectures, directed reading, workshops, seminars, practical exercises, laboratory sessions and project work. The research project will be supervised on a one-to-one basis.

Student performance in each module is usually assessed by evaluation of the quality of written or design work, and verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include essays, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project case work, design and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, and practical exercises.

Career prospects outside sport are perhaps even more exciting. The NHS offers an increasing number of opportunities for students with specialist training in exercise nutrition to support GP referral schemes and other healthy living programmes. The growing awareness of health within society, coupled with misunderstandings about the relationships between physical activity, nutrition and health has led to an increasing demand for graduates who can deliver evidence-based solutions and advice at all levels. Research or teaching within further or higher education also provide potential career opportunities.

Graduates progress to a diverse range of careers including exercise and lifestyle consultants based within hospitals and private practice. WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Your main study themes are:

  • Exercise Physiology: How the body adapts and responds to exercise and strength training. We will examine exercise in different populations, using appropriate physiological assessment techniques to differentiate between acute reactions occurring during exercise and late onset adaptations that occur with training. You will then apply this understanding to critically evaluate training schedules for individuals at differing stages of fitness or competition.
  • Nutrition: The science of nutrition and the use of dietary strategies to enhance sport and exercise performance
  • Research Skills: Key aspects of scientific method will be developed. Types of information, finding appropriate information for scientific purposes, and how to use this information. Experimental design, analysis and presentation of data.

This multidisciplinary course draws together a broad range of biosciences subject matter within the areas of sport, exercise physiology, health and nutrition.

Content has been designed to develop your appreciation of the human body and its functions, together with nutrition science and its role in promoting human health so that you can apply this knowledge to develop appropriate dietary advice and exercise programmes.

We will consider the components of fitness, including nutritional requirements, energy expenditure, body mass and body composition, examining some of the common problems associated with general health and wellbeing, diet and nutrition, exercise and sport performance. These include diets, hydration and supplements, for example.

Covering how to scientifically measure nutritional requirements and dietary allowances of macronutrients, micronutrients and other metabolically active components of food such as fibre. We also consider the negative effects of things like food additives, tannins or drugs and how ethnic and culture may affect practical advice on foods, meals and menus.

As well as subject-specific knowledge, we will encourage a critical, analytical and flexible approach to problem-solving in sport and exercise nutrition. You will systematically and creatively explore complex issues, such as physical activity, nutrition and obesity, and elite physiological support through a variety of case studies, laboratory sessions and group work.

This course offers the unique opportunity to study a sport and exercise nutrition programme as delivered from within a Nutrition department, which focuses on the study and application of evidence-based, practical sport and exercise nutrition. You will examine the evidence surrounding nutrition, performance and health whilst also gaining experience in the nutritional and physiological skills required to work within the field of sport and exercise nutrition.

The programme will offer the opportunity to undertake research within either an applied practitioner or laboratory-based environment, with additional potential to apply for vocational experience in performance sport, physical activity and/or health fields. Further, the programme offers the opportunity to obtain a vocational anthropometric analysis qualification (ISAK) within taught content. Through the underpinning theoretical content of nutrition, physiology and sports performance, alongside the vocational skills embedded throughout the course, this programme is designed to provide graduates with training which will allow them to pursue employment in applied sports nutrition, research, health and industry.

Fundamental Sport Nutrition

Covers the basics of sport nutrition, including a critical appraisal of the current thoughts with regards to carbohydrate, fat and protein requirements of athletes. The module involves traditional teaching and problem based learning.

Practical Sport Nutrition

As well as gaining professional accreditations in body composition assessment (ISAK), during this module you will be taught the key practical techniques required to work as a sport nutritionist – including diet analysis, assessment of energy expenditure, reflective practice and much more. The module will involve laboratory practicals, as well as classroom based teaching.

Research Skills

To equip you with the skills to perform an independent research project, fundamental research skills and statistical analysis are taught using practical sessions and problem based learning.

Exercise Metabolism

A comprehensive understanding of exercise metabolism is essential to fully understand sport nutrition. This module covers the basics of exercise metabolism, with the role of nutrition clearly embedded in the learning.

Supplements and Drugs in Sport

A sport nutritionist must be able to give accurate and professional advice to athletes with regards to the issues and concerns related to sports supplements. The role of WADA and UKAD will be examined, as well as how to set up safe supplement policies. At the end of the module students are encouraged to sit the free online UKAD anti-doping accreditation which is a requirement of entry onto the SENr register.

Applied Placement

All students engage in a 12 week placement provided by the university. Placements can be in high level sporting clubs such as premier league football or premiership rugby and super league rugby clubs, as well as with local sports clubs. Under mentorship from an experienced LJMU tutor, you will be guided through the process and gain hands-on experience working as a sport nutritionist.

Research Project

All students complete a research project in semester 3. This project can be individual or in small groups and can be on any topic of your choice related to sport nutrition. Some students choose to join current research projects running in the sport nutrition department whilst others prefer to fully design their own project.
