However, resources for each subject are tailored to ensure they are relevant to the creative industries. In addition, you can use your own organization as the basis for your learning and your assignments, to ensure direct relevance and practical application while you study. There are no exams, just assignments and a final business-based masters project, so your organization may even benefit from free consultancy! This is of particular value if you are looking for company sponsorship for your studies. The four residential weeks will include development of personal and leadership skills which are more effective when practiced face-to-face. While studying online, you will have the opportunity to interact with your tutor and your peers through discussion forums, privately and in the virtual classroom.

Flexibility and innovation

This is an online MBA that can be studied in your own time to fit around busy work schedules, especially important in the creative industries. The online study planner will outline the study schedule, key deadlines and dates for online interactive sessions. Here you will find numerous databases of thousands of articles, industry journals, company reports, and e-books which are all freely available to support your studies. Although focused around distance learning, you will be expected to attend four residential weeks, two per year, to gain the key soft skills required to support the academic elements of the MBA. You’ll benefit from the expertise and support of several major research centres. The School boasts the UK’s premier research centre in international business, the Centre for International Business at the University of Leeds (CIBUL) led by Professor Peter Buckley OBE and our Global and Strategic Marketing Research Centre is led by one of the UK’s foremost professors of marketing, Professor Costas Katsikeas.

Given Leeds’ position as a financial services hub, it’s not surprising that our academics working through our International Institute for Banking and Financial Services, and the Credit Management Research Centre, are among the most respected in the UK. As organisations and the nature of work change in an ultracompetitive marketplace, specialists from our Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change work with employers and staff to develop effective working practices.

The Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Studies at the University of Leeds is the focal point for enterprise research on campus and supports business start-ups through SPARK.

You’ll also come across plenty of opportunities to build your professional network, and your project work will bring you into contact with some of our many industrial partners. We have extensive relationships with Marks & Spencer, IBM, Yorkshire Bank, Asda-Walmart, Lloyds Banking Group, KPMG, Accenture and the NHS, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises, charities and social enterprises.

Course content

The course begins with an online pre-induction programme and the on-site induction takes place in October. This is an opportunity to meet the MBA team, academic staff and brush up on study skills. During the induction you are introduced to the Leading Change module, which runs alongside your core and option modules throughout the programme.

To complement and enhance your studies you will undertake three live challenges that allow you to test your new skills and knowledge in a safe environment. You’ll develop a business plan for a new business, take on consultancy work for an external organisation and simulate a board room situation.

The course culminates with either your MBA Project, where you’ll undertake independent research – you could even focus on a topic of direct relevance to your own organisation - or your choice of two optional modules. Learning and teaching

The Leeds Executive MBA is flexible enough so you can fit it in around your work, whilst giving you time away from the office to fully focus on your studies. It’s delivered in intensive three day blocks Thursday to Saturday, every six weeks with a few modules delivered over four days, Thursday to Sunday. Most teaching takes place at our executive conference facility, Weetwood Hall.

Assessment

The majority of assessment is by work-based assignments, allowing you to develop a more strategic understanding of your organisation by focusing your work on a specific management problem or issue.

Study tours

MBA students have the opportunity to take part in a one or two-week international study tour.

Typically we try and offer a variety of trips in any year to a European and/or American University. You’ll have the chance to visit local companies and partner business schools, enjoy business seminars and networking opportunities with local students, businesses and leaders and still have time to explore the culture, history and sights of the region.

Career opportunities

If you are looking to develop yourself and your career then the Executive MBA is the ideal choice in helping you achieve these goals. It will provide the opportunity for you to:

  • Start your own business or grow your existing one
  • Progress into a more senior position within your current organisation, or change career
  • Learn how to constructively and critically analyse your organisation and yourself
  • Gain knowledge and learn new skills, which will enable you to make improvements with real impact.

The Sheffield Hallam Executive MBA is designed to give you the skills, knowledge and experience to advance your career into senior management. It is tailored around you and your individual development needs, and our approach ensures that you graduate with the skills and confidence to become an agile and resilient leader.

Your personal development is underpinned by practical experience. This enables you to apply your learning and demonstrate your capability for senior management.

We tailor assignments and projects to the needs of your organisation or your own areas of interest, which maximises the value of your studies. Your organisation also has the opportunity to provide input into your learning and contribute to your development.

To be a successful leader, you need to understand, implement and integrate the current fundamental concepts of business, and have insights from differing professional perspectives. You gain this knowledge on our course by studying core MBA subjects within four integrated modules.

Completing an integrated module means that instead of studying finance or globalisation in isolation, you study finance together with globalisation, marketing and decision making. Our approach replicates the real world where strategic decisions will span multiple business areas, providing you with a richer and more realistic learning experience.

The integrated core modules are complemented by option modules that enable you to tailor your learning to your career needs. You also complete a consultancy project that involves investigating a real issue from within your organisation.

As you progress through the course you apply your learning by problem-solving real or simulated case studies. This helps you to identify and deal with links and tensions between different business areas.

You enhance your leadership skills by encountering and managing varying, often competing, perspectives on management issues. Case studies enable you to practice and assess the impact of real-time decision making, embedding and demonstrating the skills you need during your career.

During the course you can

  • build your skills in coaching, negotiating and influencing
  • attend guest lectures from leading industry experts who provide unique insights into management
  • create a portfolio of work so you can evidence your learning and development
