Objective

The EMBA (Executive MBA) Program at The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the first program of its kind offered in Hong Kong. The program, initially offered by the CUHK Business School in 1993, is a two-year part-time program that is unique in its approach to graduate business education in Hong Kong.

The CUHK Business School was again accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International) last year.

The EMBA program was established with the objective of developing in our participants the essential skills and knowledge for modern management, and preparing them for general management responsibilities at the senior executive level. In light of rising corporate and managerial complexity and new challenges facing senior executives, the program aims to improve participants’ analytical and decision-making capabilities, and enhance the competitive advantages of their enterprises. Relevance will be emphasized in the context of Hong Kong’s strategic location within China and the Asia-Pacific region.

Program of Study

The EMBA program of study reflects our commitment to relevance and excellence by focusing on strategy and the integrative nature of the business environment in which senior executives operate. Each year approximately 50 persons are admitted to the program. Participants are expected to retain their full-time job responsibilities throughout their EMBA study.

Two years of study are required - each consisting of four terms. Two one-week, in-residence study programs are respectively scheduled at the beginning and end of the program. The first-year program provides a solid foundation in all major business functions and an introduction to the various changing business environments. The second-year program uses a functionally integrative approach that emphasizes broad-based strategies and policies.

Method of Instruction

The EMBA method of instruction consistently takes advantage of the strong and diverse management experience of the participants. The methods of instruction vary, but may include formal lectures, seminars, case analyses, simulation games, and individual and group projects related to current management issues in the participants’ host organizations.

To enhance the educational value of the program, participants are expected to contribute to small and large group activities within a highly interactive learning environment. Study groups are formed with participants from varied backgrounds and experience levels. Here, effective communication and teamwork skills are practised with the aim of achieving our EMBA objective.

All core courses are conducted in English while a few electives are conducted in Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin).

If you are interested in becoming a fully accredited, professional executive coach, equipped with the latest knowledge in the field, this is the programme for you.

The Ashridge Masters in Executive Coaching is a two-year, part-time, modular, self-directed programme. It is an opportunity to review and re-launch your practice, make the best of your natural skills, learn about yourself as a coach through supervision and co-coaching, and meet some of the most experienced practitioners in the field.

You will develop your coaching and mentoring skills, either to integrate into your existing consultancy and coaching work or to create a solid foundation for a new coaching and consulting practice.

The programme takes a relational psychological perspective, which will deepen your clients’ self-awareness and their understanding of the web of key relationships in their organisation. The aim is to develop your ability to respond to, initiate and enable change through the coaching process.

This programme has been developed by experienced coaching practitioners who have a combination of research, psychological and organisational development experience. Two of the programme modules have been awarded the EMCC European Quality Award (EQA) at Senior Practitioner level.

There are five modules altogether but you do not have to commit to the full degree programme until the end of module 3. For module 1 you will have two options: Coaching for Organisational Consultants or Team Coaching for Consultants. As both of these modules are Open Programmes, you may choose just to start with one of these and then sign up for the degree if you would like to go further.

After completing Modules 1 and 2, Module 3 enables you to prepare to become an Accredited Coach with Ashridge Accreditation. This popular certification has been helping coaches to excel since 2002.

What will you learn?

During the programme you will:

• Be introduced to the latest models and perspectives
• Learn about the relational approach to consulting
• Develop and broaden your coaching and mentoring skills
• Develop greater self-awareness enabling you to use your experience whilst coaching others
• Benchmark your approaches as a coach
• Understand and be informed by theoretical frameworks that support effective coaching
• Practice both familiar and new coaching skills and interventions
• Acquire a personal vision of your own coaching work
• Become part of a diverse and experienced community of coaches

How you will learn

The programme reflects Ashridge's philosophy about the nature of change and learning. You will be learning in an environment of reflection and experimentation, rather than simply relying on didactic input. The learning experience draws on the principles of adult learning and development and is well-grounded in research.

It is delivered through short teaching inputs on coaching theories and models, combined with small and large group discussions. Each module also includes 'co-coaching' with fellow participants as well as live supervision. In the second year, the programme delivery becomes a collective and deeper inquiry into the main elements of coaching: the coach, the client, the relationship and the organisation.

Start dates:

March, May & October.

Description

Innovatively tailored to meet the needs of North Wales’ management professionals and high-flyers, the Management Centre’s new Executive MBA Programme is designed to provide a challenging and flexible learning experience.

The programme is aimed at professionals who have key technical and functional experience, but who seek the breadth of business and management knowledge needed to develop their careers in the direction and at the speed required. We recognise that MBAs across the globe appreciate the international recognition that their qualification brings and the opportunities, which it can create. Our experience suggests that most MBAs are looking to consolidate and advance their learning with a view to either changing career direction or to fast-track progression in their current sector. Our Executive programme recognises these demands and provides an ideal platform for the highly motivated individual.

Aims of the course

Among the key features that distinguish the Executive MBA Programme at Bangor Business School’s new Management Centre are:

Aimed at management professionals within North Wales
Structured around part-time studies
Flexibility which recognises the often heavy demands placed on delegates in their workplace
Broadly based syllabus aimed at equipping participants with the knowledge and skills required across diverse business and management environments
An analytical and problem solving bias
Personal and professional development
Leadership and team building focus
Performance management
Networking and peer support
The programme is a challenging one both intellectually and in workload. However, the rewards are tremendous. The teaching and learning processes are formative. Most MBAs will find their studies are life changing, bringing opportunities which otherwise would not have presented themselves. The competence and confidence, which accompanies the learning and development process equips participants for the greater things to come.

Course structure

The programme is offered part-time. The course has a minimum duration of two and a half years although we would expect most students to complete within three.

Executive MBA students attend a combination of evening, afternoon and weekend sessions over each of the two semesters each year.

There are three stages in the Executive MBA Programme:

core compulsory modules that build knowledge and skills across key business and management disciplines and fields;
optional specialist streams aimed at ‘implementation/application’ and ‘project management’ within either public sector or SME management including innovation/entrepreneurship;
an individual project based on a real project in the student’s place of work.
The programme starts in mid-September each year with a three day introductory module aimed at building study skills and imparting the MBA ethos, starting the process of ice breaking and group working, and sorting out domestic and technical matters prior to commencing the course.

The programme is taught in two semesters each year. Students will normally complete three modules each semester. Hence, over two years they will complete the required 12 modules comprising the core and specialist streams.

Two modules are taught in parallel and teaching is timetabled over ten weeks on Tuesday evenings and Friday afternoons each week. The third module is taught over four days in concentrated weekend blocks.

What will you study?

Core modules (10 modules):

Managerial Economics
Financial Management
Management and Organisational Behaviour
Human Resources

This module provides a detailed insight into the entrepreneurship and the role of small firms within the economy.
