There are no exams, just assignments and a final business-based masters project, so your organization may even benefit from free consultancy! This is of particular value if you are looking for company sponsorship for your studies. The four residential weeks will include development of personal and leadership skills which are more effective when practiced face-to-face. While studying online, you will have the opportunity to interact with your tutor and your peers through discussion forums, privately and in the virtual classroom.

Here you will find numerous databases of thousands of articles, industry journals, company reports, and e-books which are all freely available to support your studies. Although focused around distance learning, you will be expected to attend four residential weeks, two per year, to gain the key soft skills required to support the academic elements of the MBA. Objective

The EMBA (Executive MBA) Program at The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the first program of its kind offered in Hong Kong. The program, initially offered by the CUHK Business School in 1993, is a two-year part-time program that is unique in its approach to graduate business education in Hong Kong.

The CUHK Business School was again accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International) last year.

The EMBA program was established with the objective of developing in our participants the essential skills and knowledge for modern management, and preparing them for general management responsibilities at the senior executive level. In light of rising corporate and managerial complexity and new challenges facing senior executives, the program aims to improve participants’ analytical and decision-making capabilities, and enhance the competitive advantages of their enterprises. Relevance will be emphasized in the context of Hong Kong’s strategic location within China and the Asia-Pacific region.

Program of Study

The EMBA program of study reflects our commitment to relevance and excellence by focusing on strategy and the integrative nature of the business environment in which senior executives operate. Each year approximately 50 persons are admitted to the program. Participants are expected to retain their full-time job responsibilities throughout their EMBA study.

Two years of study are required - each consisting of four terms. Two one-week, in-residence study programs are respectively scheduled at the beginning and end of the program. The first-year program provides a solid foundation in all major business functions and an introduction to the various changing business environments. The second-year program uses a functionally integrative approach that emphasizes broad-based strategies and policies.

Method of Instruction

The EMBA method of instruction consistently takes advantage of the strong and diverse management experience of the participants. The methods of instruction vary, but may include formal lectures, seminars, case analyses, simulation games, and individual and group projects related to current management issues in the participants’ host organizations.

To enhance the educational value of the program, participants are expected to contribute to small and large group activities within a highly interactive learning environment. Study groups are formed with participants from varied backgrounds and experience levels. Here, effective communication and teamwork skills are practised with the aim of achieving our EMBA objective.

All core courses are conducted in English while a few electives are conducted in Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin).

Students can expect the residency periods to be quite rigorous. The normal schedule for residencies is from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Homework, readings and team assignments are completed outside of these hours so it is recommended that you keep your evenings available for these activities.

Online Learning
The online portion of our Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching program takes place over the Internet. There are deadlines for assignments; however, students work through the requirements of the course at their own pace. A number of different information delivery methods are used, including textbooks, articles, case studies, interactive learning and "chat" bulletin boards for corresponding with your team members, who may be on the other side of the country. Students are assigned to a team during the first residency and continue to work together during the online courses.

The online courses are taken consecutively and each course lasts for a period of 12 weeks. Each course requires a level of effort of approximately 20 hours per week. During the first online course, the amount of time required may be higher as students familiarize themselves with our online learning platform.

Advanced Standing
Upon completion of this certificate program, successful graduates may apply for advanced standing in our MBA programs. A portion of the MBA tuition is also waived.

The Executive MBA is a taught programme delivered by experienced internal and visiting faculty, and complemented by guest practitioner speakers from industry and the professions. Over a two year period, the Executive MBA combines short intensive bursts of classroom interaction with online support. This programme will next commence in September 2018.

Successful businesses in the future will be those that can confidently and capably steer a path through a world characterised by intense competition, rapid technological development, economic turbulence and increasing resource insecurity.

Businesses need leaders who can think and act strategically in this volatile environment, managing the risk and challenges involved, but also spotting and seizing opportunities for efficiency, innovation and new business models. Businesses also need leaders who will act responsibly in delivering value to all stakeholders.

The Edinburgh MBA will prepare participants to progress with confidence into leadership roles in this new world. We will deepen participants’ understanding of how businesses and markets work, how value is created through innovation and marketing, how strategies are crafted, how businesses are financed, how performance is measured, how value is delivered efficiently and effectively, and how organisations should be governed, managed and led through change.

The programme aims to develop leaders who:

  • demonstrate a strategic mind-set and skill-set
  • recognise their role as responsible stewards of financial, social and natural capital
  • are capable of leading improvement, change and innovation in organisations
  • are confident and capable critical thinkers and decision-makers
  • have an international perspective
  • value and take advantage of the benefits of collaborative and lifelong learning

We will instil a passion for business improvement, innovation and entrepreneurial action to help participants lead in the growth or creation of new business opportunities. We will develop participants’ ability to think strategically and beyond disciplinary silos. Successful leadership also requires accomplished interpersonal skills to bring about change in organisations. Through coaching and skills training, we will work with participants to understand their leadership strengths and weaknesses and provide support for improvement.

Strategic Leadership Certificate

Starting in April 2017 we are offering a Postgraduate Certficate in Strategic Leadership. This offering will give experienced managers an alternative to the Executive MBA who perhaps are looking to develop themselves further but who cannot commit to a full Executive MBA.

For more information about certificate structure, entry requirements, fees and how to apply, please visit the Business School website.

Programme structure

The programme is delivered in a modular format and is next commencing in September 2018. The main taught part of the programme is delivered over 21 months, followed by completion of a Capstone Project. Participants will complete the full programme within 27 months.

The design of the modules reflects consideration given to the balance between participant and employer investment and maintaining work-life balance. For most participants, attending modules will mean taking one day a month from their normal working week and one day from their weekend with modules commencing Friday lunchtime and ending early Saturday evening.

Most of the core courses will run over three months, with one day per course on each of three weekends (with the exception of Strategic Leadership which will be taught in a series of three blocks across both years). Option courses will be delivered in the middle of Year 2 and will be taught in intensive one-week blocks. Between modules, participants will work on assignments and undertake further reading and study, supported by online resources and discussion forums.

The Executive MBA is primarily delivered in a classroom format, but learning is supported by extensive electronic resources and the opportunity to discuss ideas and concepts with colleagues and tutors through regular discussion forums. This Executive MBA is not a distance-learning programme: on-campus attendance at courses is required at regular intervals as outlined in the programme structure. You should verify your eligibility to study in the UK before applying.

The programme combines rigorous academic study with practical application. This is achieved both in the classroom through case studies but also via assessments that directly relate to the participants’ own organisations. There will also be opportunities to undertake consultancy-style project work with external organisations, to broaden participants’ insights into alternative business models and approaches.

Core courses include:

  • Strategic Leadership
  • Strategic Marketing
  • Organising for Effectiveness
  • Operations Improvement
  • Understanding Economies
  • Finance
  • Accounting
  • Leadership and Responsibility
  • Entrepreneurial Leadership
  • Creative Strategy
  • Leading Strategic Change.

Participants can also select from a range of option courses. Participants also undertake a major capstone project. In parallel with academic study, the programme is complemented by a Leadership and Professional Development programme and personal coaching.

Strategic Leadership Certificate: The programme will commence in April 2017 and finishes in February 2018. It incorporates a number of courses that are taught as week long or weekend intensive sessions. Full details of the schedule will be available shortly.

Career opportunities

The employment market is highly competitive but the Edinburgh MBA is distinctive and will provide participants with a competitive edge. MBA participants will also engage in a Leadership and Professional Development programme that includes personal diagnostics, career planning and skills enhancement designed explicitly to support participants in their pursuit of promotion or new careers.

Description

Innovatively tailored to meet the needs of North Wales’ management professionals and high-flyers, the Management Centre’s new Executive MBA Programme is designed to provide a challenging and flexible learning experience.

The programme is aimed at professionals who have key technical and functional experience, but who seek the breadth of business and management knowledge needed to develop their careers in the direction and at the speed required. We recognise that MBAs across the globe appreciate the international recognition that their qualification brings and the opportunities, which it can create. Our experience suggests that most MBAs are looking to consolidate and advance their learning with a view to either changing career direction or to fast-track progression in their current sector. Our Executive programme recognises these demands and provides an ideal platform for the highly motivated individual.

Aims of the course

Among the key features that distinguish the Executive MBA Programme at Bangor Business School’s new Management Centre are:

Aimed at management professionals within North Wales
Structured around part-time studies
Flexibility which recognises the often heavy demands placed on delegates in their workplace
Broadly based syllabus aimed at equipping participants with the knowledge and skills required across diverse business and management environments
An analytical and problem solving bias
Personal and professional development
Leadership and team building focus
Performance management
Networking and peer support
The programme is a challenging one both intellectually and in workload. However, the rewards are tremendous. The teaching and learning processes are formative. Most MBAs will find their studies are life changing, bringing opportunities which otherwise would not have presented themselves. The competence and confidence, which accompanies the learning and development process equips participants for the greater things to come.

Course structure

The programme is offered part-time. The course has a minimum duration of two and a half years although we would expect most students to complete within three.

Executive MBA students attend a combination of evening, afternoon and weekend sessions over each of the two semesters each year.

There are three stages in the Executive MBA Programme:

core compulsory modules that build knowledge and skills across key business and management disciplines and fields;
optional specialist streams aimed at ‘implementation/application’ and ‘project management’ within either public sector or SME management including innovation/entrepreneurship;
an individual project based on a real project in the student’s place of work.
The programme starts in mid-September each year with a three day introductory module aimed at building study skills and imparting the MBA ethos, starting the process of ice breaking and group working, and sorting out domestic and technical matters prior to commencing the course.

The programme is taught in two semesters each year. Students will normally complete three modules each semester. Hence, over two years they will complete the required 12 modules comprising the core and specialist streams.

Two modules are taught in parallel and teaching is timetabled over ten weeks on Tuesday evenings and Friday afternoons each week. The third module is taught over four days in concentrated weekend blocks.

What will you study?

Core modules (10 modules):

Managerial Economics
Financial Management
