The MA in Professional Communication program provides a broad understanding of communication as a human activity. Graduates will have:
-Knowledge of both the fundamental and advanced concepts related to human communication and interaction and an ability to communicate successfully (written and oral discourse).
-The ability to use computer-mediated technology to manage the processes required for information retrieval and dispersal.
-Knowledge of the mass media and the information society, including information technology, telecommunications, public policy, publishing, and the cultural industries.
-Knowledge of government, social, and business organizations and an understanding of how information exchange is fundamental to the operation of these.
-An understanding of the management of communication industries and of internal and external corporate communications (public relations, advertising, marketing).

Flexible Admission

Applicants who do not meet the Standard Admission requirements will be considered for Flexible Admission and assessed as follows:
-Applicants without an undergraduate degree, but more than three years (90 credits) of relevant post-secondary education, should have at least three years of relevant work experience, preferably in a leadership capacity.
-Applicants with 2-3 years (60-90 credits) of relevant post-secondary education should have at least five years of relevant work experience in a leadership capacity.
-Applicants with less than two years of relevant post-secondary education should have at least ten years of high-level, professional communication experience in a leadership capacity.

The programme -

Built on a successful and popular undergraduate programme, this high-level master’s degree helps to prepare students for a career in the sports industry by delivering hands-on professional skills and adopting an interdisciplinary approach to coaching.

During the course, students will explore key areas such as talent identification, long-term athlete development, performance analysis, strength and conditioning, peak performance, technical and tactical development, marginal gains, and injury prevention and management.

To complement their studies, students are expected to undertake work placements relevant to the course within professional sport and exercise organisations. Working at all levels, from elite athletes to schools or rehabilitation patients, students will gain valuable ‘real-world’ experience working alongside leading experts. Work placements are expected to have been organised prior to joining the course; if students have been unable to organise a placement, the University will support them in finding a suitable opportunity.

Students have full access to the University’s leading, fully-equipped sports science facilities, which boast a BASES-accredited physiology laboratory, as well as biomechanics, health and exercise, and psychology laboratories. Many of these facilities are regularly used by professional athletes, including players from Southampton FC.

Past students have benefitted from a guest speaker programme which has featured lectures from professionals from the highest level of a variety of sports, who have shared their advice, knowledge and experience of the industry.

The course team has strong industry links and the University is a partner of Southampton FC. The University also works with other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC and GB Wheelchair Rugby.

Course Content

Technical Development in Sport: On this unit you will critically analyse coaching methods and how skill is acquired, building your understanding and use of technology for developing, monitoring and testing athletic performance.

Psycho-Social Development in Sport: The aim of this unit is to analyse the theories underpinning talent identification and long-term athlete development, and to examine the psycho-social factors affecting performance throughout an athlete’s career.

Physical Preparation in Sport and Exercise: This unit examines the science behind effective training, injury prevention and rehabilitation in a practical setting. You will focus on physical and mental loading, and on the key fitness components of strength, speed, endurance and flexibility.

Tactical Development in Sport: This unit focuses on performance analysis techniques, providing practical opportunities to collect, assimilate and analyse tactical, technical and time motion information, with the aim of improving performance.

Marginal Gains for Peak Performance: This unit identifies past, current and future methods of obtaining potential marginal advantage in performance, with a chance to build first-hand experience via off-site learning.

Individual Project: The project provides an opportunity to undertake a sustained, intensive and independent investigation into a topic of your choosing, presenting your work in a peer-reviewed journal format.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

The course combines theory-led sessions with practical sessions, working individually and in groups in both the laboratory and the field. On all units you’ll work with real-life clients, in a placement either organised yourself or by members of the course team.

Work experience -

Prior to starting the course you’ll be expected to have a placement organised that will last throughout your studies; this can be in more than one organisation if required. The placement should be in a role relevant to the course, and might include (but not limited to) coach, sport scientist, performance analyst, strength and conditioning coach, exercise physiologist, biomechanist, laboratory technician, etc.

If you’ve been unable to organise a placement, the course team will support you in finding a placement, potentially with university partners Southampton FC or a range of other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC, GB Wheelchair Rugby and more.

Assessment -

Assessment will be a range of written coursework, viva, presentations, reports and practical tests.

The assessment strategy used is predominantly written assessments with only two (2) formal invigilated examinations throughout the course. The MSc Risk Management programme provides an in depth understanding of risk and their application in practice both for financial and non-financial organisations. Course details

Postgraduate certificate - to achieve a postgraduate certificate, you will need to earn 60 credits.

Develop your existing professional skills and learn how to undertake a comprehensive health assessment including history taking, clinical examination, diagnosis and documentation in the advanced consulting and clinical skills module. You’ll discover how to create effective treatment and management strategies and gain advanced skills through clinical practice experience, utilising relevant theoretical models and decision making processes.

Acquire the knowledge and skills you need to excel as a surgical care practitioner, specialising in trauma and orthopaedic surgery through the surgical care practitioner specialist practice module. You’ll develop an understanding of the pathological, clinical, and practical aspects of both trauma and orthopaedic surgical practice and master the necessary surgical techniques.

Assessment in practice is ongoing throughout the programme with specified competencies to be achieved within operating theatres, clinics and ward areas. Assessment in theory is patient and service focused to enable development of condition/patient specific knowledge as well as service enhancement.

Postgraduate diploma - to gain a postgraduate diploma, you will need to earn 120 credits.

During the PgDip students develop further specialist knowledge and skills enabling greater participation and leadership in surgical patient care. Most organisations offer mid-Band 6 during training, and Band 7 on qualification (PgDip). Many continue to participate in service delivery innovation, with high level patient interaction and decision-making.

On completion of PgDip, you have the option to enrol onto the MSc Surgical Care Practitioner (Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery).

This course explores a range of psychological approaches and therapeutic methods to provide holistic training in counselling. You will learn about the Humanistic approach and Person-Centred therapy, Psychodynamic approach and Psychoanalytic therapy, Behavioural approach and Behaviour therapy, and Cognitive approach and Cognitive therapy. Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Our MSc in Counselling will use a range of teaching methods to provide a challenging and engaging learning environment. You will attend lectures introducing the core theories, be supported through computer labs, watch video demonstrations of counselling in action, participate in workshops simulating counselling and supervision, debate important and controversial issues in the field, and receive regular one-to-one support from your personal tutor. Research Thesis

Our MSc in Counselling includes an empirical research project in the field of counselling. Research is an essential skill for a career in counselling, as more workplaces demand that their counsellors are able to empirically test their interventions and evidence their impact on clients. Counselling Placement

Our MSc in Counselling requires that you complete a core counselling placement of 150 supervised face-to-face counselling hours and 50 hours of work based practice. After learning the foundations of ethics, boundaries, and communication skills in the first semester, you will be expected to begin your placement at the start of the second semester in your first year. You will then need to complete all of your hours before graduating from the course in order to gain the MSc in Counselling. You will be provided with support and guidance in identifying a suitable placement, but the responsibility for obtaining a placement and completing all required hours remains with the student. You will also be responsible for ensuring that every month of practice is supported by at least 1.5 hours of supervision by an appropriate counselling supervisor (please be aware that you may need to pay for the services of a supervisor, if sufficient supervision is not provided within your placement). Graduates of the course are expected to have a broad overview of the field of GIS, to have extensive practical experience of GIS and related software and hardware, and be able to operate at a professional level in GIS employment.

PgDip modules cover issues such as the representation, acquisition, management and manipulation of spatial data, spatial analysis and modelling, remote sensing, GIS in the commercial environment, databases and web programming. Concepts and techniques are illustrated using a variety of applications. Students can take one optional module from a choice of GIS work experience / work-based project, GIS for environmental management, and customising GIS. Students may also opt for an environmental strand of the course.

In addition to acquiring substantial theoretical knowledge of the subject, students gain extensive practical experience using a variety of software, focusing primarily on ArcGIS but also including ERDAS Imagine, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, MySQL, OpenLayers, Geoserver, QGIS, Excel, SPSS and a number of GIS extensions and plug-ins. One of the core modules gives students experience of web-based programming languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript, while an optional module in customising GIS applications introduces them to Esri ModelBuilder and the Python programming language.
