This award develops the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to perform evidence-based medicine and clinical research and is relevant to all specialist areas of practice. It also enhances your commitment to lifelong learning, encouraging you to develop an inquisitive approach to clinical practice.
You study three core modules in evidence-based practice, research design and statistics. We take a flexible approach to course delivery. You can take this one-year course either by attending classes, by distance learning (no attendance required) or by flexible learning (a combination of some attendance and some distance learning). On successful completion of this award you can choose to progress onto a PgDip or MSc.
You study three modules throughout this award to develop your knowledge and skills in evidence-based medicine, research methods and statistics. You are encouraged to apply this to your own specialist area of practice.

How you learn
You can choose to study all modules by attending classes, distance learning or a combination of both. Attendance learning includes key lectures, group discussions group seminars, practical activities, computer lab work and individual tutorial support. Distance learning is supported electronically through the virtual learning environment and includes written learning materials, narrated PowerPoint presentations, interactive learning materials, electronic discussion forms and email or Skype tutorial support. You can choose to combine these two learning methods by attending some sessions and taking others by distance learning.
How you are assessed
We use a range of learning and teaching methods throughout including a written report, statistical analysis and a research proposal.

The PgDip and MSc Evidence-based Medicine (Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and Pain) programmes provide a modular postgraduate education to meet your needs. The programmes offer specialty training within this area and will enhance your career progression towards a consultant post.
The programmes are flexible and modular, covering a range of subject matters relevant to anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain. Credits from the component modules can be combined to provide a postgraduate certificate, diploma or master’s-level qualification. You study the central aspects of evidence-based medicine and research, and how to apply these to your anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain practice to enhance the quality of your individual clinical practice and broader service delivery. You share a number of modules with other master’s-level programmes giving you many opportunities to mix with other students and share academic and professional experiences. The emphasis is on integrating theory and clinical practice in a multi-professional working and learning environment.
You develop an ability to understand how evidence is generated, retrieved, evaluated and importantly, employed in practice. The programmes enhance inter-professional learning and direct the focus of learning toward evidence based clinical decision making and quality improvement to enhance service delivery. In both programmes you study the central aspects of evidence based medicine and research and to apply these to your specific area of practice or clinical speciality with the aim of enhancing the quality of your individual clinical practice and broader service delivery. You study three core modules. A number of modules are shared with other master’s level programmes giving you many opportunities for you to mix with students on other programmes and share experiences (both academic and professional). The emphasis is on the integration of theory and clinical practice within a multi-professional working and learning environment.
The programmes offer a structured and logical progression to learning, with a firm link to your specialist area of practice. You may be employed in speciality training posts, so a flexible approach to the programme delivery has been used. You develop an ability to understand how evidence is generated, retrieved, evaluated and importantly, employed within practice.

Following the completion of your PgDip you can apply for entry to the third year of the MSc Evidence-based Medicine within five years of completing your PgDip.

Taught completely online, our Cosmetic Medicine courses have been developed with the express purpose of promoting and enhancing the professional knowledge underpinning practice in cosmetic medicine. The courses are designed to complement practice based Recognise Prior Learning (RPL) awards, which are being developed for cosmetic medicine practitioners.
With Health Education England (HEE) adopting increasing regulatory requirements for aesthetic practice, individuals undertaking aesthetic procedures should have a formal postgraduate qualification. Therefore, these qualifications from our Cosmetic Medicine courses would be an important milestone in the healthcare practitioner's journey to be an aesthetic practitioner. Such qualifications are also regarded as integral by the individuals' regulatory authorities, such as the GDC, GMC and NMC.
The Postgraduate Diploma and MSc course is aimed at doctors, dentists and nurses with independent prescriber status. These roles are evolving with increasing demand amongst these specialists for a postgraduate qualification to help support their professional learning and clinical development.
Students may apply for the MSc in Cosmetic Medicine as a two year course, firstly by completing the Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits), followed by the MSc (60 credits).
The Diploma in Cosmetic Medicine course has been specifically designed to promote and enhance working professional’s knowledge underpinning practice in cosmetic medicine. It is designed to complement separate practice based recognised prior learning (RPL) awards that are being developed for cosmetic medicine practitioners.

The online Cosmetic Medicine Diploma lasts one calendar year and is a part-time distance learning course. It consists of 6 modules per year, each of 6 weeks’ duration.

The course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. The scenarios act as both the focus for learning and assessment thus embedding assessment within the learning process.
Each of the 6 modules has the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).
Students use the skills gained during the lectures to engage with the different activities (see below).

Each module has the same format. Using an online platform and one tutor per 10-15 students, the self-directed distance learning is guided by tutor stimulated discussion based on clinically rich case scenarios. Group projects are undertaken alongside independent projects. Reflective practice is recorded in a reflective portfolio to help students consider how the learning can be translated into everyday work and practice.
Teaching starts with 1 day of introductory lectures. Students may attend these lectures in the UK (Glyntaff campus, University of South Wales)

Students are not required to attend the lectures however those who attend do benefit as they get a "jump start" to the course. Students who are not able to attend, should request a skype/telephone call to orientate them onto the course and are advised to review the lecture slides.
The Cosmetic Medicine MSc has been specifically designed to promote and enhance working professional’s knowledge underpinning practice in cosmetic medicine. It is designed to complement separate practice based recognised prior learning (RPL) awards that are being developed for cosmetic medicine practitioners.
The Masters in Cosmetic Medicine provides a progression route for the Postgraduate Diploma in Cosmetic Medicine offered by the University.
The Cosmetic Medicine Masters of Science runs over 1 calendar year. Students undertake an initial 12 week online module to develop their skills in critical appraisal and knowledge of research methodologies. Thereafter they are able to select a 1,500 word proposal and 10,500 word professional project.

Module 1: Research Methodologies and Critical Appraisal - MSc teaching methods for this module are similar to the PG Diploma course modules, however it is run over 12 weeks.
Module 2: Professional Project - To produce the professional project, students continue to use the online course; however much of the work is self-directed.
This MSc is designed to give clinicians and practitioners a deeper understanding of sports medicine, sports injuries and exercise medicine. The programme covers the evidence-based management of sports medicine and musculoskeletal injuries, and emphasises the vital role of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. This MSc can be taken full-time over one year, part-time over two years, or via flexible distance learning.
The programme focuses on sports injuries and their prevention and treatment, and provides a thorough grounding in relevant areas of anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology and psychology, as well as the fundamentals of exercise in maintaining and improving health. Students develop essential research skills through an independent research project.
All students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.
The programme consists of seven core modules (105 credits), one optional module (15 credits) and a research project (60 credits). Clinical sessions are spread over the year; commitment is equivalent to one half-day per week over three 12-week semesters. Clinic options include sports injury, physiotherapy and podiatry, exercise testing, and team visits.
A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, full-time nine months) is offered.
All MSc students undertake an independent research project from a diverse range of available topics, which culminates in a dissertation, an oral examination and a presentation.
Teaching and learning
Teaching is delivered through a combination of formal lectures, hands-on practical sessions, small group seminars, clinics and field trips, and will be delivered by lecturers who are highly experienced in their field. Up-to-date, evidence-based practice will be emphasised throughout and students' contribution through discussion is considered key. Assessment is through written examination, presentations, coursework and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), as well as the dissertation and viva voce (oral) examination.
