Using an online platform and one tutor per 10-15 students, the self-directed distance learning is guided by tutor stimulated discussion based on clinically rich case scenarios. Group projects are undertaken alongside independent projects. Reflective practice is recorded in a reflective portfolio to help students consider how the learning can be translated into everyday work and practice. This MSc is designed to give clinicians and practitioners a deeper understanding of sports medicine, sports injuries and exercise medicine. The programme covers the evidence-based management of sports medicine and musculoskeletal injuries, and emphasises the vital role of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. This MSc can be taken full time over one year, part-time over two years, or via flexible distance learning.

Degree information

The programme focuses on sports injuries and their prevention and treatment, and provides a thorough grounding in relevant areas of anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology and psychology, as well as the fundamentals of exercise in maintaining and improving health. Students develop essential research skills through an independent research project.

All students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of seven core modules (105 credits), one optional module (15 credits) and a research project (60 credits). Clinical sessions are spread over the year: commitment is equivalent to one half-day per week over three 12-week semesters. All MSc students undertake an independent research project from a diverse range of available topics, which culminates in a dissertation, an oral examination and a presentation.

Teaching and learning
Teaching is delivered through a combination of formal lectures, hands-on practical sessions, small group seminars, clinics and field trips, and will be delivered by lecturers who are highly experienced in their field. Up-to-date, evidence-based practice will be emphasised throughout and students' contribution through discussion is considered key. Assessment is through written examination, presentations, coursework and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), as well as the dissertation and viva voce (oral) examination.

The MPhil comprises either:

Placements

The research project element of the course may be undertaken in a number of scientific institutions, within and without the University. This may include the University's School of Clinical Medicine, the School of Biological Sciences, the European Bioinformatics Institute, Welcome Trust Sanger Institute and, subject to approval, other suitable research institutions.

Assessment

Students must submit a dissertation of 5-6,000 words or 10-12,000 words, depending on the options selected. This will be worth 1/6th or 1/3rd of the overall mark for the course, respectively.

For each of the taught modules, students must complete summative assignments of 2500-3500 words or equivalent (except where other methods of module assessment are indicated in individual module descriptions)

Each student is allocated a named supervisor, who will meet regularly with the student to discuss progress and provide feedback and support as required. Written supervision reports are accessed via the online supervision system. Students are given feedback on the assessments conducted at the end of each module.

All students will meet with the programme director on a termly basis to discuss progress and to provide their feedback on the course.

Helmsmanship

Helmsmanship is a unique, two year, non-award bearing course which will help you to develop the non-clinical skills required for consultant-level appointments at tertiary centres. The course is designed to provide personalised comprehensive training in the attributes required to be an effective senior clinician.

It is delivered by Cambridge University Health Partners together with the Judge Business School. The faculty includes clinicians, senior NHS managers, organisational development consultants, Judge Business School academics, and experts from the wider Cambridge community.

The course is practically focussed, developing advanced skills in education, teamworking, leadership and management in an environment which encourages personal development, organisational intelligence, iconoclasm, and resilience. It is delivered in a variety of formats, using innovative tools to engender skills such as consultant level responsibility, development and improvement of clinical and non-clinical services, change management, and the effective supervision of teams and engagement with colleagues.

Helmsmanship is not delivered in any other environment and is designed to fit within the Clinical Medicine Programme at Cambridge.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

Many modules will have classroom sessions supported with online learning material. Your module tutors will guide you as to the preparation required for teaching sessions and whilst they will sometimes give specific guidance, at master’s level it is expected that you take some initiative to read around the session topic so that you can contribute to classroom discussions. The emphasis will be on problem - based learning where a student will be facilitated to engage in deep learning and enquiry. Blackboard, our online learning platform, will be used to support this process.

All the staff teaching on the course are experienced clinicians and have many years of experience in education. Each staff member is delivering modules within their area of expertise and so you can be sure that you are being taught by staff who are at the forefront of their field. All staff are involved in research within their clinical and/or academic field, and where it is relevant to the module you are studying, the research will be shared with you. In some modules we also bring in experienced, practising clinicians with current expertise in an aspect of the module; this enables us to blend academic expertise, clinical knowledge and current clinical experience and to give you access to people who are able to ensure that your learning experience enables you to meet the demands of the current clinical environment.

OPPORTUNITIES

On completion of the course you will have the necessary skills to pursue a career in Sports Medicine. You will also have developed valuable research skills that will allow you to continue with your education. After completing the degree, students will be encouraged not only to consider a position in Sports Medicine but to also consider further educational opportunities such as progressing on to a PhD or Professional Doctorate pathway. MISSION

The mission of the UWS master’s in human nutrition and functional medicine (HNFM) program is to prepare learners to serve as outstanding health care clinicians, consultants, educators, administrators and researchers in the field of human nutrition and functional medicine.

PROGRAM

Our clinically-oriented human nutrition and functional medicine program is the only fully accredited master’s degree in functional medicine, having been granted regional accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the highest level of academic accreditation available in the U.S. This program is 100 percent online as offered as a collaborative endeavor between UWS and the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), the organization which founded and developed the key functional medicine concepts used today.

Functional medicine is a science-based, patient-centered and systems-oriented approach to helping people achieve and maintain excellent health. This is accomplished primarily through natural methods, with diet and nutrition as a central focus. It is a forefront model for health care practice that seeks to address the causes of disease and dysfunction rather than suppressing symptoms. Founded on a holistic view of health, functional medicine delves deep into the biochemical and genetic individuality of each patient.

Why choose UWS for a master’s in nutrition?

This program includes advanced instruction in clinical nutrition, similar to other master’s level nutrition programs, but it goes far beyond by also presenting extensive educational content on functional medicine principles and practices derived from the Institute for Functional Medicine. These include important interdisciplinary and evidence-based perspectives, patient assessments and clinical interventions designed to enhance the function of the whole person.

It is primarily a clinically focused degree, with emphasis on treating individual or multiple conditions and their risk factors using dietary and nutritional interventions. Every course contains elements of clinical assessment and diagnosis. There is also a strong focus on wellness promotion and general health in order to meet the clinician’s primary goal of preventing disease and metabolic dysfunction before they occur.

SCHEDULE

The program consists of 50 quarter-credits of graduate coursework (33 semester credits) and can be completed in seven quarters (under two years) if taken at the recommended pace of 7-8 credits (usually two courses) per quarter, though students may move more quickly or more slowly through the program. We recognize that the life situations of our students vary considerably in terms of their family, employment and community commitments, thus we are flexible with regard to speed and prefer that students take the time they need in order to learn the material well.

Additionally, it is possible to take a leave of absence for a quarter or more if needed. As long as the intended schedule is communicated with the registrar, it is possible to extend the program to better suit a student’s individual needs.

Assessment

Online Diploma in Genomic Medicine and Healthcare

The course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. The scenarios act as both the focus for learning and assessment thus embedding assessment within the learning process.

Each of the 6 modules have the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Students are split into groups of 10-15 students and are assigned a dedicated expert tutor who:

This course seeks to develop future leaders in aesthetic practice by offering a high quality programme at an internationally recognised institution.

This MSc is an intensive part-time postgraduate taught programme encompassing the science of skin ageing and aesthetics, the application of evidence-based practice, the clinical assessment and management of patients presenting with aesthetic problems.

Teaching and learning

The programme structure has been designed using established educational theory and practices to enhance student experience and learning.

The University of Manchester virtual learning environment (Blackboard) guides participants through module content, assessment submission and programme information.

Modules utilise blended teaching methods aligned with learning outcomes and assessment. The course contains e- learning case work, small group work, interactive forums, clinical debriefs, and practical sessions with volunteer models. Students are taught in small ratios (1:5) to maximise opportunities for clinical learning.

We hold two face-to-face 6-day residential sessions during the first 24 months of programme, one in each of the two first years. Both of these will be scheduled in the second semester and dates should be circulated in September. Attendance in at the residential sessions is compulsory for all students.

An initial Induction Day is held in Manchester at the start of the first academic year to familiarise participants with the on-line e-learning software and library resources. Attendance at the Induction Day is also compulsory for all students.

Coursework and assessment

You will be required to pass group and written assignments for each module. Those with a highly practical element will also include assessments of procedural skills.

With the gap in training highlighted by the UK government review of cosmetic practice, it is likely all aesthetic practitioners in the UK will need to provide evidence of their credentials.

This programme does not provide a professional competence framework, but goes beyond this to offer integrated knowledge and the application of critical skills enveloped within high quality professional behaviours.
