We have seen an increasing professionalisation of the events industry, including development of the skill sets and education of its people.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

Events play a vital role in society, providing not only culture and entertainment for millions but also enabling cities and destinations to promote and regenerate themselves. Every facet of our society is involved in events, from business meetings and conferences to music festivals and sport.

Across this global industry, it is recognised that the events sector needs trained professionals if it is to continue to thrive and develop. This programme provides students with both the education and training to become a professional event manager, capable of organising both small and large scale events.

Through a balanced set of modules, students will gain advanced understanding in how the event industry works and develop expertise in planning and managing different events.

The programme aims to provide a high quality vocational education, which is intellectually rigorous and up-to- date, as well as relevant to the needs of future managers, executives and professionals in the service sector industries covered by the programme.

The programme has a business management orientation related to service industries and draws on a range of cognate areas of study to explain and analyse the particular sector. An integrated approach is taken so as to provide a coherent view that explores the interrelationships between the various components of the programme. At the same time by way of elective modules the programme permits students to pursue an element of specialisation relevant to their backgrounds, interests and/or career aspirations.

Where appropriate it is international in scope and coverage. The programme draws on the stimulus of the School’s recent research activities.

This course prepares you to enter an exciting and vibrant industry encompassing conferences and exhibitions, cultural and sporting events, festivals and personal events. You study how these are planned, managed and evaluated. The focus of the course is on the strategic role events play in a modern society, and how they contribute to organisational and community objectives. The most recent evolutions in event strategy are at the core of the course, based on the research of our 25-strong academic research team.

Sheffield Hallam University is one of the top providers of events courses in the UK. As a founder member of the Association of Event Management Educators (AEME), we are involved in establishing academic benchmarks in events education. This innovative course has an innovative format based on a new learning and assessment strategy that puts you at its centre.

You take three core modules designed to replicate the real world, where problems are solved in an integrated way. Instead of studying topics such as events marketing, finance or operations separately, you learn how strategic decisions involve multiple business areas at once. You gain experience problem-solving real or simulated case studies, working with live projects and real clients.

You also choose an option module and complete a work-based-learning module focusing on the event sector of your interest. You are supported by our teaching team, who have a variety of professional backgrounds.

It is delivered by staff with practical and academic expertise, using a variety of learning approaches.

The programme is built on self-directed study and independent learning. You will need to read around highlighted materials, identifying and critically appraising important themes. Lectures and tutorials will require active participation and you will also be involved in task-oriented activities featuring guest speakers and group discussions.
The course has a strong emphasis on work-related learning. Modules such as ‘Planning and Resourcing Events’ and ‘Staging and Evaluating Events’ are particularly ‘hands-on’ in nature.

Format

This is a 'conversion' Masters course, and we assume no prior study of events. Teaching is based on international published literature, the professional experience of specialist staff and the use of debate and discussion. We place an emphasis on using real-world examples of event scenarios, in line with the applied nature of event management, and our tutors are thought leaders in their field with industry connections and research experience.

You'll learn though formal classes and seminars, as well as through group work, work-based learning and independent study. The work will include assignments, exercises, case studies and presentations, with an emphasis on independent learning to develop your problem-solving skills. Outside of the classroom, you will have access to the latest research, publications and intelligence on events and business / management.

Assessment

A variety of assessment approaches are used, both individual and group-based, including essays, examinations, reports, critical literature reviews, vivas and presentations. We explore the role of planning as a set of regulatory mechanisms but more importantly as a means of identifying opportunities and assisting developers (be they in the private, public or not-for-profit sectors).

We have been running professionally accredited planning education courses at LSBU successfully for over 40 years (50 in 2018).

This MA is aimed at graduates from a variety of disciplines who are looking to pursue a worthwhile and challenging course that can lead to an exciting and stable career in spatial planning and related fields.

The qualification is fully accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute, which means you can become a licentiate member on graduation. With two years' relevant work experience (in some cases one year) you can apply to take the RTPI Assessment of Professional Competence and become a full member. Students will get free RTPI membership and RTPI bursaries (subject to availability).

The qualification includes a compulsory one week residential European field study visit. In recent years students have visited Barcelona. Venice or Dortmund. For all new entrants, field study visit fees are included in the tuition fees. Our one-day and week-long residential visits include presentations and Q&A with practitioners in London, the UK and beyond.

◾If you want to establish a career as a chartered town planner, this programme is designed for you.
◾The programme is professionally accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).
◾There is significant input from industry to our teaching programme, including teaching on some courses, guest lectures and seminars. There are also informal opportunities to meet people from industry at open events and recruitment presentations. We will also support you to arrange professional work placements.

Programme structure

You will take a series of core courses and undertake a dissertation or a major project in planning and regeneration.

The core semester 1 courses focus on planning and urban theories, principles and practices which are necessary for you to build a solid understanding of how cities, markets, institutions and planning process function. In semester 2 you will build on this knowledge base by developing core spatial planning skills and a solid grounding in regeneration. Courses will involve you attending lectures, seminars and tutorials and taking part in project, lab, field and team work.

Accreditations

As a graduate you will be in possession of an MSc degree recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute and can develop your career as a chartered town planner. ◾If you satisfy the progression requirements, this qualification provides an entrance route to the MSc in City & Regional Planning, MSc in City Planning & Regeneration and MSc in City Planning & Real Estate Development.
◾You can gain this qualification in a manner that works best with your professional commitments, either through one year of full-time study or on a modular basis over two or more years.
◾An optional field trip to London will provide you with an insight into the complex socio-economic dynamics of city building and design through visits to high profile real estate, planning and regeneration projects. You will have the opportunity to both meet and speak with senior industry professionals and policy-makers involved in the delivery of major urban developments. Past trips have included visits to The Shard, Olympic Park, Crossrail, Battersea Power Station.
