This course is a conversion course, it is ideal for graduates who would like to change subjects or career direction.

This course focuses on events marketing, defined as the use of events for marketing purposes. In a competitive marketing environment, organisations are now marketing through events, whereby events are used as an integral part of the marketing communications mix. The event is not the end itself, but a means to achieve a product’s or brand’s marketing objectives. Events marketing is, thus, part of the experiential marketing domain, defined as the strategy of achieving marketing objectives through personal experiences which allow customers to engage and interact with brands, products, and services.

You'll learn about the most recent developments in a range of critical areas of events marketing such as sponsorship/branding, new media campaigns (guerrilla and ambush), PR stunts and virtual events. All aspects of marketing communications are discussed to enable you to prepare an integrated events marketing communications plan. You'll start the course by developing a sound understanding of management principles and the events industry; understand the strategic, finance and organisational context in which organisations operate. This will help you come up with events marketing solutions that satisfy the organisation’s marketing communication briefs.

A number of specialist knowledge areas are covered, including a comprehensive overview of marketing and the migration towards the integrated management of marketing communications. As an academically-driven course, you'll learn to evaluate a range of theories and models for events marketing.

Placement

You will be given the opportunity to undertake a placement or an option which directly provides insight into the operation or management of event marketing.

The MSc International Events Marketing welcomes students new to marketing and events and those with some events and marketing experience who wish to specialise or broaden their expertise. Working closely with our Research Centre for International Tourism and Events Management, you will explore recent research and the challenges within the sector to help develop your potential to become a leader within the events sector.

You will gain a strong foundation in marketing theory and practice and its relevance and application within an events context. With live case-studies, simulations and skills workshops we encourage an innovative and creative approach to your learning. 

We place emphasis on theory and practice and the development of core employability skills. You have the choice to apply for an 8 month paid work placement in a marketing role instead of completing either a dissertation or client project.

You will gain a wealth of knowledge in events marketing including:

  • the core principles of events marketing
  • contemporary issues, challenges and research in the events sector
  • customer behaviours and expectations, and the variety of channels used to interact with customers, thereby developing a customer-centric stance 
  • analysing marketing data
  • devising marketing strategy for global brands and organisations
  • developing the decision-making skills and rationale to devise marketing plans and communications. 

Course structure

You will study nine compulsory modules including a module which helps develop your professional and academic skills. In addition, you can choose to apply for an 8-month paid work placement or take a Dissertation or Client Project. If you choose to take the work placement the course last 17 months. If you choose not to take a work placement the course lasts 12 months.

Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises, simulations and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments and online group-based marketing simulation.

You will gain practical experience and put your knowledge of events marketing approaches and theory into practice during live research projects for an organisation. Teaching staff at the Business School are engaged in academic research and/or come from an industry background with in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Researchers within the Centre for International Tourism and Events Management Research or investigating contemporary issues related to the sector, which are shared through our teaching. Visiting speakers from the world of business, consultancies and research bodies augment the programme through leading edge discussions and specialist events.

Specialist facilities

We're investing over £30m to create modern teaching and learning facilities and creating a new home at Headington for the Business School.

Set to be completed in 2017, you'll see:

  • The Business School brought together in a modern, professional environment
  • 30 teaching rooms and a collaborative lecture theatre
  • A new Main Hall with soundproof wall, perfect for teaching and events like graduations

Our library provides specialist business resources (both hard copy and via online access) to UK and overseas companies' annual reports, statistics on all aspects of business and management, a wide range of constantly updated key texts, and postgraduate MA, MBA, MSc and PhD theses.

Approach to assessment

Assessment methods have been designed to support the teaching and learning process, and where possible provide a vehicle for learning rather than an assessment of learning. For example, participation within the design, planning, delivery and post-event evaluation of a real event provide opportunities to learn and apply theory and event management tools. The Dissertation and Client Project are self-managed activities organised by students, and supported by a tutor in the role of Supervisor who will provide regular feedback on progress. For the Work Placement Project module, a Supervisor will similarly be allocated and provide a central point of academic support for you during the length of the project. The placement project itself is secured by you and organised jointly between the Faculty of Business and the supporting organisation. Initial information and guidance will be provided during Professional and Academic Development for Marketers and Event Managers.

Within the remaining modules you are assessed in a number of ways, including individual and group reports and presentations, portfolios, reflective statements, and open briefs that encourage individual creativity. While you are encouraged to work in teams to enhance your own and collective learning, group work is only summatively assessed in two compulsory modules.

Field trips

An optional Business in Practice Study Trip is offered to students in the form of a non-credit bearing module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies. 

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. If you successfully complete this module you will have the following non-credit bearing module recorded on your transcript: P58335 International Business in Practice: Study Trip.

Field trips are optional and will have additional costs associated with them.

In the final phase of the course, you will complete a 15,000-word dissertation on a marketing topic of your choice, which will require you to make recommendations for real-life marketing practice. Schedule

One year, full time over three trimesters.

In addition to attending lectures and seminars (around 10-12 hours a week) you will be expected to spend significant time (25 or more hours a week) engaged in preparing for classes and additional self-directed study as well as participating in the support programme.

Assessments

An innovative range of individual and group based assessments are used involving the preparation of essays, marketing plans, case study analyses, portfolios and presentations as well as the dissertation.

Facilities and Special Features

Throughout the course you are taught by experienced academic staff with specialist knowledge of their subject areas. Taught modules are delivered using a combination of lecture and seminar sessions, with a strong emphasis on participation and discussion. To bring concepts and theories to life, extensive use is made of real world case-studies and practical exercises supplemented by extensive on-line learning materials

To integrate these modules and enrich the experience of the student there is a supporting programme of workshop activities and events. Typically these include a Summer School as well as guest speakers, marketing games, study trips and learning skills development sessions throughout the year.

Summer School

In July 2015, students studying on the course benefitted from a week-long Summer School that provided the opportunity to have marketing concepts brought to life through study trips, visiting speakers and participating in a Marketing Challenge based on Northampton’s leather heritage.

The students were able to find out how leather products are produced with a tour of the tannery at the University’s Institute for Creative Leather Technologies. Professor Mike Redwood spoke on the way luxury leather brands market themselves and the particular issues they face in developing markets.

Program details

The curriculum of MSc Marketing is made up of a set of compulsory core and elective courses that provide our students with all the necessary tools and knowledge required to successfully address today’s main marketing challenges.

Between April and June, students have access to a wide portfolio of certificates to add a sectorial expertise on top of their curriculum (students already holding a Master’s degree can stop in April to finish their professional thesis and fulfill a professional experience).

Finally, all students must write a Master's Thesis and fulfill a 4-month professional experience requirement in order to graduate.

The highly qualified teaching team has broad industry experience in various areas of marketing, such as product management, market research and marketing communications. They are also research active, widely published in books, journals and reviews. The Ehrenberg Centre for Research in Marketing, based at LSBU and the Ehrenberg Bass Institute in Australia regularly contribute to the curriculum and industry practitioners are often invited into the classroom.

The MSc Marketing and International Finance programme benefits from our considerable strengths in marketing and finance.

The programme is a ‘skills’ based degree containing 8 marketing and finance modules and a short focused business report. The structure of the report has been developed following feedback from employers who indicate that they prefer graduates who are able to write concisely, accurately and clearly in a focused report rather than write in the style of a lengthy and less focused dissertation.

The programme begins with a two week foundation programme where students become familiar with a range of concepts in business, statistics, economics and finance. The programme helps students to understand how the University operates and how to make the most of the range of student services that are freely available. The foundation programme importantly introduces you to your fellow students who will become a major part of your learning experience at Dundee and will continue to be part of your network of friends and business connections after you graduate.

Off-Campus Learning Events: The programme includes off campus learning events embedded in the modules of some of the modules. These events aim to extend your leaning skills in ways that are directly relevant to the pathway and your personal development. These off campus events are one or two days in length and the cost of the transport, event and any necessary accommodation is covered by the MSc programme. At present there are off campus events embedded in the marketing, finance and banking pathways. More off campus events are being arranged and further events are being developed to begin this year.

Urban Experience Event: The MSc programme places considerable importance on ‘team building’ and understanding the role that international and domestic cultural variation plays in the workings of firms, and product and employment markets. These issues are addressed through a unique ‘Urban Experience’ event that helps team building and the development of learning skills. Business themes are also explored in the event

Distinguished Visitor Series: A feature of the programme is the Distinguished Visitor and Enterprise Gym Lecture Series. Distinguished practitioners in the field are invited to the University to hold seminars highlighting critical aspects of business, finance, banking, management, marketing and human resource management. It offers students a unique opportunity to meet with business leaders and explore current issues with them.

The programme is focused clearly on the applied and theoretical aspects of marketing and finance so as to develop you for a marketing career in the finance sector. The inclusion of a shorter business report allows the programme to expand the opportunity for you to undertake more skills based modules that will improve your career prospects.

In the modern world marketing and finance takes an ever increasing role in business, development and the economy. The MSc Marketing and International Finance programme provides you with the skills and training to play an important role in a career in marketing and finance. To achieve this the programme provides you with the right mix of applied and theoretical skills to both understand the issues facing firms and how to deal with these issues.

This course is developed for students who have completed their undergraduate study and are now looking to develop their marketing and finance related skills so as to pursue a successful career in marketing.

We provide a fresh approach to marketing and finance that is suitable if you have already studied economics, business management or accountancy or if you are new to the subject. Around half of the students on the programme have a business background while the rest of the students come from a very wide range of non-business backgrounds. The programme has been designed with these students with non-business backgrounds in mind while still challenging students whose first degree has been a business related subject.

Assessment

Module content is assessed through a combination of coursework, quizzes, and end of module exams. The weighting on the coursework component varies depending on the content of the module but may account for as much as 40-50% of the overall degree.
