Teaching and learning

Our teaching and learning philosophy includes the whole learning process, both how courses are taught and how the personal needs of our students are addressed. Lectures and tutorials provide a framework of knowledge which you will be expected to build upon through private reading and completion of self-directed tasks.

Classes are a mixture of lectures, tutorials, presentations, videos, seminars, guest speakers, site visits and field trips, depending on the teaching requirements of the course. Attendance is monitored throughout the year, both for core and option courses. You will be expected to attend taught courses on a frequent basis.

Graduates pursue opportunities in senior positions in a wide variety of roles connected with events and events management. This may include events management companies, PR firms, local authorities, performing arts companies, festivals, conference venues, theatres, hotels, sports venues or concert halls.

The MSc International Events Management welcomes students from a range of academic subject areas as well as those with some events management experience who wish to broaden their expertise. By working closely with our Research Centre for International Tourism and Events Management, you will explore recent research and the challenges within the sector to help develop your potential to become a leader within the events sector.

You will gain a strong foundation in events management and apply theory to practice by engaging in practical events management. Through live case-studies and being immersed in real event design and delivery, you will experience an innovative and creative approach to your learning. 

Through continuous Professional Development you will develop core skills essential to increase your employability. You have the choice to apply for a an 8-month paid work placement in an events marketing role or you can complete a dissertation or client project. You will gain a wealth of knowledge in contemporary events management including: 

  • event design, planning, delivery and working with key stakeholders
  • the core principles of events marketing including digital marketing and marketing analysis
  • finance and accounting for business
  • leadership in an international context
  • develop decision-making skills to devise marketing plans and communications.

Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments and online group-based marketing simulation.

You will gain practical experience and put your knowledge of events management approaches and theory into practice during the design planning and delivery phases of a real event for an organisation. Teaching staff at the Business School are engaged in academic research and/or come from an industry background with in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Researchers within the Centre for International Tourism and Events Management Research are investigating contemporary issues related to the sector, which are shared through our teaching. Visiting speakers from the world of business, consultancies and research bodies augment the programme through leading edge discussions and specialist events.

Teaching Location

If you are starting the course in September 2017 you are likely to experience all your teaching at the Headington Campus.

Approach to assessment

Assessment methods have been designed to support the teaching and learning process, and where possible provide a vehicle for learning rather than an assessment of learning. For example, participation within the design, planning, delivery and post event evaluation of a real event provide opportunities to learn and apply theory and event management tools. The Dissertation and Client Project are self-managed activities organised by students, and supported by a tutor in the role of Supervisor who will provide regular feedback on progress. For the Work Placement Project module, a Supervisor will similarly be allocated and provide a central point of academic support for you during the length of the project. The placement project itself is secured by you and organised jointly between the Faculty of Business and the supporting organisation. Initial information and guidance will be provided during Professional and Academic Development for Marketers and Event Managers.

Within the remaining modules you are assessed in a number of ways, including individual and group reports and presentations, portfolios, reflective statements, and open briefs that encourage individual creativity. While you are encouraged to work in teams to enhance your own and collective learning, group work is only summatively assessed in two compulsory modules.

Field trips

An optional Business in Practice Study Trip is offered to students in the form of a non-credit bearing module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies. 

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. If you successfully complete this module you will have the following non-credit bearing module recorded on your transcript: P58335 International Business in Practice: Study Trip.

Many events now have an international focus working across cultural, economic and geographical boundaries. Providing a sound theoretical underpinning of the cultural, political, ethical and economic aspects of international events management, this course offers you the practical and strategic understanding required to run international events effectively.

Guest speakers from industry regularly share their knowledge and insights through a series of lectures, case studies and field trips, which keeps the course contemporary and industry focused. You will also be invited to bring your own cultural experience and understandings to the course, making it attractive to home and non-EU students.

You will gain a thorough grounding in key aspects of international events management. This course is suitable if you want to enter the events profession as a manager or if you have events experience and want to enhance your event knowledge in an international context either in the UK or overseas.

For Students from outside the EU who want to improve their English and academic skills we offer a combined masters course with the MSc International Events Management. If you have an IELTS score of 5.0 or 5.5 you can study for two semesters before starting your postgraduate degree. Teaching and Learning

This course is delivered full and part-time. The full-time course is taught over two days per week and if started in September takes twelve months to complete. If you choose to start in January, the course will take eighteen months due to the summer break.

The course requires a great deal of independent learning and study. The course is approximately equivalent to a working week requiring approximately 38 hours study in total, including contact time. However this is only a rough guide and will vary according to the academic workload and the students preferred work mode.

Part-time the course is taught one day per week over a two year period. There is some flexibility with part-time delivery and may have the option to expand or shorten your studies in particular circumstances.

The teaching methods used are diverse and include lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, practical exercises and online learning materials. Some modules adopt a blended learning approach using online materials and face-to-face delivery.

The MSc International Events Management programme offers you an engaging environment in which to explore the challenges faced by events professionals.

A balanced set of modules will provide you with an advanced understanding of the international events industry and the core areas of business and management generally.

A series of challenging, creative, real-world assessments will teach you how to design, plan, stage and evaluate different events. Central to the learning experience is the requirement to run a live event yourself.

Events play a vital role in society, providing not only culture and entertainment for millions but also enabling cities and destinations to promote and regenerate themselves. Every facet of our society is involved in events, from business meetings and conferences to music festivals and sport.

Across this global industry, it is recognised that the events sector needs trained professionals if it is to continue to thrive and develop. This programme provides students with both the education and training to become a professional event manager, capable of organising both small and large scale events.

Through a balanced set of modules, students will gain advanced understanding in how the event industry works and develop expertise in planning and managing different events.

The programme aims to provide a high quality vocational education, which is intellectually rigorous and up-to- date, as well as relevant to the needs of future managers, executives and professionals in the service sector industries covered by the programme.

The programme has a business management orientation related to service industries and draws on a range of cognate areas of study to explain and analyse the particular sector.

This course allows you to study at your own pace - from wherever you are in the world. To help you fit your studies around your work and personal commitments, you will study one module each semester.

Modules are offered on a rolling basis, with new and existing students learning together and from each other, sharing their experience and learning. Expertise is drawn from events worldwide and enables the course to address the changes and complexity of challenges facing today's events manager.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

This course is delivered by online learning and teaching methods focus on online materials. However, there is variety and diversity in the teaching methods deployed as they match the aims and learning outcomes of each module.

An online induction programme is provided in the first week of the course to ensure you are fully equipped to operate effectively throughout your studies. You will be supported by e-tutors and the distance learning team including administrative and course leader support.

A range of materials are provided to support your learning and include a programme specification, student and module handbooks and online learning tools. These include online and audio recorded lectures, PowerPoint presentations, directed reading in preparation for lectures, online journals and reports, online individual and group tutoring via web cam, and chat rooms for students and staff.

About the programme

This new programme enables you to develop your practical, strategic and conceptual understanding of the events sector within local, national and international contexts.

There are 530,000 people employed within the UK events sector. At a global level, nations the world over are increasingly recognising the value of events as a major element of development strategies and nation building projects with emerging economies such as Brazil (2014 FIFA World Cup, 2016 Olympics), Russia (2018 FIFA World Cup), China (2008 Olympics) and Qatar (2022 FIFA World Cup) pursuing hosting rights for mega-events.

As events are increasingly recognised as a tool for stimulating economic development, the industry is quickly professionalising and requires a growing number of graduates to form an educated, critically informed workforce. The new UWS MSc in International Events Management is designed to meet this demand.

There are three routes available –

Route 1 – for those with little or no prior grounding in events management

Route 2 – aimed at those who already have a qualification in events management

Route 3 – a work-based learning pathway for those in paid employment within the sector who wish to enhance their knowledge (one third of the programme will be completed in the workplace, with the remaining modules delivered via blended learning)

Your learning

To exit with a Postgraduate Diploma you must pass the taught modules. Most students will continue to work towards an MSc, and will complete relevant modules and a dissertation.

Format

This is a 'conversion' Masters course, and we assume no prior study of events. Teaching is based on international published literature, the professional experience of specialist staff and the use of debate and discussion. We place an emphasis on using real-world examples of event scenarios, in line with the applied nature of event management, and our tutors are thought leaders in their field with industry connections and research experience.

You'll learn though formal classes and seminars, as well as through group work, work-based learning and independent study. The work will include assignments, exercises, case studies and presentations, with an emphasis on independent learning to develop your problem-solving skills. Outside of the classroom, you will have access to the latest research, publications and intelligence on events and business / management.

Assessment

A variety of assessment approaches are used, both individual and group-based, including essays, examinations, reports, critical literature reviews, vivas and presentations. Formal assessments are normally scheduled towards the end of each module, but there are opportunities to submit work and receive feedback on this work throughout the course for example, through blogs, diaries and 'elevator' pitches.

Careers / Further study

Careers in event management are diverse, and roles include working as an event organiser, conference centre manager or event marketing executive. There are opportunities to specialise in particular events and event types, including meetings and exhibitions, and sporting and cultural events.

Every day, we receive on average 3,000 advertising messages, of which we will probably only remember four or five. The question is then to know what brands should do to survive in such a hyper-competitive environment, saturated as it is with commercial information.

Communication associated with events can then generate a retention rate then times higher than what traditional advertising methods can achieve. As a result, communication spendings on events account for over 7% of overall communication budgets, a figure that has been growing fast lately.

Located in Paris and given entirely in English, this programme will train you to work in the events industry, whether in the organisation or the promotion of events for the general public or for professionals.

This programme offers:

- Advanced level input by international lecturers (UK, Australia, Italy, ...);
- Field experience thanks to Challenge Projects, Junior Consulting Projects, and in-company work placements;

You will explore the connections between culture and business/ management, while applying theory, key skills and knowledge to practical experience in the industry. At the heart of the course is a synergy of arts, culture, and management theory and practice, which ensures that you will deepen your understanding of, and competence in, developing and managing cultural and/or commercial events.

You will have an excellent learning experience combined with intensive study and research options with key professionals in the field, such as the British Arts Festivals Association, Festival Republic, Glastonbudget, Spark Children's Art Festival and many more. You will also work with teaching staff at the cutting edge of research and new ideas in the field, as well as helping to organise and run our annual week-long festival, Cultural Exchanges.

DMU is linked to festivals and events across Europe through its membership of the European Festivals Research Project. The Cultural Events Management staff run their own Cultural Exchanges festival and the team are involved in research on festivals from music festivals such as Latitude and Summer Sundae Weekender, which creates opportunities for your own research projects and work placements. Within the UK alone it is estimated that there may be up to 25,000 festivals and events with a strong cultural dimension. COURSE SUMMARY

You will gain a detailed understanding of the theory and practical applications needed to become a successful events manager in this globally defining industry.

This programme enables you to work on group projects and business simulations designed to improve your experience and practical events management skills.  You will learn about the strategies involved in hosting international events from music festivals to corporate hospitality and from business related meetings to conferences and exhibitions.

You can choose to enjoy the challenges of a six-month industrial placement in the UK or overseas, as part of a work experience option in the events industry.

TEACHING

The course is currently delivered in four blocks of three-day intensive study periods, followed by independent study and online support through the University’s virtual learning environment, Blackboard. Each module is taken and assessed over a six week block. 

From September 2017, this delivery format will change. Students will continue to study a single module for a 6 week period. Face to face teaching will be delivered on campus for two half days each week. In addition, you will attend the taught element of the Business Innovation Programme each Wednesday afternoon during the 6 week blocks, with independent study completed in your own time through Blackboard.  Individual student timetables will be provided during induction week.

Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials using a wide range of learning activities.

ASSESSMENT

Over the duration of your course a range of assessment techniques will be used. Types of assessment include; essays, assignments, exams, multiple choice tests, online tests, group reports, and portfolio work.
