We have seen an increasing professionalisation of the events industry, including development of the skill sets and education of its people.

If you are seeking to develop your management potential within this sector and improve your transferable skills such as presentation ability and creativity, then this Master's is for you.

You will gain knowledge in direct marketing campaigns when acquiring new customers and nurturing existing customer relationships. A greater number of organisations now invest in live communications to create experiences for customers, inspire and motivate employees, and develop meaningful messages for brands.

Our Master's will equip you with the skills and knowledge to manage an events project and quality of service delivered at the event. You will gain a better appreciation and understanding of the theoretical underpinnings, operational practice implications, and public policy issues relating to events management.

Teaching and learning

Our teaching and learning philosophy includes the whole learning process, both how courses are taught and how the personal needs of our students are addressed. Lectures and tutorials provide a framework of knowledge which you will be expected to build upon through private reading and completion of self-directed tasks.

Classes are a mixture of lectures, tutorials, presentations, videos, seminars, guest speakers, site visits and field trips, depending on the teaching requirements of the course. Attendance is monitored throughout the year, both for core and option courses. You will be expected to attend taught courses on a frequent basis.

Extracurricular activities

The Events Society provides an additional forum for students to meet and discuss current trends with faculty and guest speakers. You will also be able to gain work experience and develop your skills at the various events the society organises.

In recent years an exciting new profession has emerged with conference/events planners and managers organising a diverse range of events, and marketing the great variety of destinations and venues in which they take place.

This course is specifically designed for people who want to enter, or make further progress in, management-level careers in the fast-expanding field of events and conferences. London is an ideal place in which to study events and conference management. A regular host of world class sports and culture events such as Wimbledon, the London Marathon, Notting Hill carnival and the London Fashion Week, as well as one-off mega events such as the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics games and the 2015 Rugby world Cup, London is widely recognised as a world events capital. EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

Events play a vital role in society, providing not only culture and entertainment for millions but also enabling cities and destinations to promote and regenerate themselves. Every facet of our society is involved in events, from business meetings and conferences to music festivals and sport.

Across this global industry, it is recognised that the events sector needs trained professionals if it is to continue to thrive and develop. This programme provides students with both the education and training to become a professional event manager, capable of organising both small and large scale events.

Through a balanced set of modules, students will gain advanced understanding in how the event industry works and develop expertise in planning and managing different events.

The programme aims to provide a high quality vocational education, which is intellectually rigorous and up-to- date, as well as relevant to the needs of future managers, executives and professionals in the service sector industries covered by the programme.

The programme has a business management orientation related to service industries and draws on a range of cognate areas of study to explain and analyse the particular sector. An integrated approach is taken so as to provide a coherent view that explores the interrelationships between the various components of the programme. At the same time by way of elective modules the programme permits students to pursue an element of specialisation relevant to their backgrounds, interests and/or career aspirations.

Where appropriate it is international in scope and coverage. The programme draws on the stimulus of the School’s recent research activities.

The programme provides the students with the basis for developing their own approach to learning and personal development.

Excellent writing and confident presentation skills are essential to work in marketing. Good people skills are also a must as networking is particularly important. So is having a creative and adaptive mind.

A traditional career path leads from marketing executive to senior marketing executive, then to marketing manager, and finally to marketing director. However the marketing industry is very broad, with many companies in all different sectors requiring varying degrees of marketing expertise, so options for progression vary considerably.

What will you study on the MSc/PGDip/PGCert Corporate and Marketing Communications?
The course allows you to choose from a range of optional modules which build upon the content of the core modules and explore more specialised and niche aspects of communications. For example if you want to focus on marketing communications then modules on advertising, experiential marketing and events would be an appropriate route to take. If you have an interest in consumers and stakeholders within a communications context then modules on psychology, analytics and research would suit you. For a more strategic communications approach then modules on PR, crisis communications and cross-cultural communication would be the pathway to follow. You will also have the opportunity to complete a dissertation project in an area of marketing communications that you have a particular interest in and matches with your career specialism.

In a competitive marketing environment, organisations are now marketing through events, whereby events are used as an integral part of the marketing communications mix. The event is not the end itself, but a means to achieve a product’s or brand’s marketing objectives. Events marketing is, thus, part of the experiential marketing domain, defined as the strategy of achieving marketing objectives through personal experiences which allow customers to engage and interact with brands, products, and services.

You'll learn about the most recent developments in a range of critical areas of events marketing such as sponsorship/branding, new media campaigns (guerrilla and ambush), PR stunts and virtual events. The industry -

Modern PR practitioners have to grapple with communication that knows no boundaries. The stakeholder relations manager, the corporate journalist, the digital promoter, the brand content manager - these are the jobs of the future, and the graduates filling these posts will need to know how to do their public relations in an integrated way.

The corporate narrative now has to compete with the user generated content. Traditional news and feature journalism is being pushed aside by citizen journalism and brand journalism, causing PR practitioners to re-think their influencer strategies. Advertisers who were once focused on campaigns in print media are now using rich online content, while native advertising is blurring the lines between public relations and advertising. Those who can surf the waves of this multifaceted world will be the most effective (employable) strategic communicators.

The programme -

As the roles of digital newsroom manager, multimedia advertiser, marketing professional, and corporate PR continue to converge, it is increasingly important that students gain first-hand experience of these functions. With opportunities for networking, live client briefs and portfolio development all built into the course, graduates leave Southampton Solent with a wealth of industry relevant experience to show potential employers.

The ‘Professional Development’ unit gives students work-placement and freelance opportunities, enhancing their professional skillset. Students will also be able to pitch for paid work at Solent Creatives, who specialise in connecting students with businesses who need creative support. These projects can help students to strengthen their portfolio of professional work. For full details of each individual unit, please see the ‘course content’ tab.

Learners are encouraged to carry out additional work experience alongside their regular studies. The course team’s close links with industry have helped past students to negotiate placements at top local and national agencies.

As one of the country’s top creative universities (Which? University Student Survey, 2014), Southampton Solent is proud to offer students a range of high-end media facilities. Students also have the opportunity to access an extensive media loans service, where they can borrow high-end video production and photography equipment.

The course concludes with a major project or dissertation. This is another opportunity for students to specialise their knowledge, conducting in-depth research into an area that complements their unique career ambitions.

Course Content

Units include:

- PR in a Multimedia World (30 credits) - this unit covers how the theory and practice of PR changes as communication moves across paid, owned, shared and earned media. Paradigm shifts from traditional PR approaches are considered in the context of actual PR campaigns currently running.
- Multimedia Campaign Planning (30 credits) - students get the opportunity to develop and implement a number of campaign activities across a wide variety of platforms, testing their ability to integrate paid, owned, shared and earned media in a PR campaign.
- Media Measurement & Evaluation (15 credits) - this unit introduces students to the measurement techniques applied in advertising, marketing, promotion and PR sectors, including the evolution of RoE (return on engagement).
- Research Methods (15 credits) - this unit raises the students’ research skills to master’s level and includes SPSS software and other methodologies that are relevant to their particular areas of interest. This is a shared unit.
- Professional Development (30 credits) - this unit positions the MA programme in terms of the student’s career aspiration, identifying skill sets and development needs in a personal development programme. This forms the basis of a freelance/workplace project and informs the student’s choice of dissertation topic.
- Major Project/Dissertation (60 credits) - the culmination of this MA programme. Theory and practice learned in the previous units inform a final research project.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

Work experience:

One unit (Professional Practice) requires a work placement or freelance project to be completed. Students are encouraged to source their own client (through Solent Creatives) or to find a work placement that is appropriate to their career ambitions. The course team will be available to provide support and guidance as necessary.

The placements and projects vary in length, depending on client needs. The minimum required is a two week placement, but on average the client projects last much longer.

Assessment:

Assessment methods include essays, practical portfolios, reflective reports, and campaign outputs. The major project/dissertation unit includes a presentation during the early stages of development. ‘PR in a Multimedia World’ includes an exam.

Our facilities -

We have a fully equipped IT centre with both PC and Mac computers. These feature industry-standard image manipulation, video and audio editing software. Access to camera equipment and professional recording devices for podcast and video creation is highly likely, and access to photographic equipment is always available.

Web-based learning -

Solent’s virtual learning environment (VLE) provides quick online access to assignments, lecture notes, suggested reading and other course information. The unit materials are posted on the VLE and students are expected to have reviewed them prior to attending class. The materials include journal articles, videos and web-based resources.

Graduates will be in a good position to pursue further professional qualifications. Chartered Institute of Public Relations diplomas are available in areas of expertise such as crisis management and internal communication. Membership of the CIPR encourages continued professional development (CPD).

MPhil/PhD options are open to those wishing to pursue academic research and teaching.

The tuition fees for the 2016/2017 academic year are:

Other costs -

Students may travel to central London for an agency visit. This has taken place three times over the past six years. Coach tickets can be found for less than £20, and all day tube passes cost around £10.

Graduation costs -

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2015, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £42 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

The optional Visual and Material Culture Track (VMC) within the Master of Art in Global Communications (MAGC) offers an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural consideration of the increasing importance of visuality and interactivity in today’s world.

Students acquire in-depth knowledge of visual theories, contexts, and practices and their relationship to the global media—and develop critical thinking about the cultural forces behind visuality as a communicative practice.

Vision and visuality: more than meets the eye

Social, political, and economic conditions shape seeing and the production of objects and events for visual consumption. Reaching beyond traditional understandings of media and communication, we examine such things as imaging systems, screen practices, data graphics, architecture, tourism, performance, gaming, body ornamentation, race, gender, and sexuality—and all of these on both a global scale and within regional traditions.

Incorporating non-Western contributions to the field, this track combines a critical approach to theoretical and scientific understandings of vision and visuality with a rigorous consideration of the functions of the viewer, object, and environment in specific circumstances.

Ideal candidates—and outcomes

Students pursuing this track will likely have studied or worked in art, anthropology, cultural studies, psychology, design, publishing, marketing, image-based journalism or film—or be interested in pursuing careers in those fields.

The VMC track prepares students for professional careers in communications or further graduate study.

Structure of the specialized track

As in the regular MA in Global Communications program, coursework can be completed in three semesters, including the summer. The length of the internship or thesis may vary, however—many students choose to take additional time for these components.

The program requirements for the MAGC Visual and Material Culture Track are as follows:
-Three core courses (12 credits)
-Three core electives (12 credits)
-Four elective courses from the general Global Communications graduate course offerings (16 credits)
-Final project: thesis or internship (8 credits)

Core courses focus on the fundamentals of global communications and the physical and cultural conditions of vision. You may explore how people come to identify—and believe in—brands, or study representations of gender in a globalized media environment.

As for electives, you have the choice of several practicums, including in video, broadcasting, branding, and advertising, as well as courses as diverse as identify formation to color as communication in marketing and art.

Coursework and Research Masters

The MA in in Global Communications, Visual and Material Culture Track is a 48 credit Coursework and Research Masters that can be completed in one calendar year. The length of the internship or thesis may vary, however—many students choose to take additional time for these components. These come from current work in politics, political science and media studies, and also from political sociology, cultural theory and journalism. The curriculum covers political communication, from the national and international down to the local and personal, from governments and parties to NGOs and local activist groups. It engages with cultural, alternative and digital, interactive communication as well as traditional mass media.

This dynamic programme, first and foremost, offers critical engagement. It asks difficult questions about politics, economic policy, society and the media. Taking this course will not just give you an understanding of the the forms and impacts of political communications. It will also help you contextualise that knowledge in relation to the structures, institutions and actors that are at the heart of politics and media.

This course is broadly conceptual in focus, but also offers several practical, applied options as well as skills-based components. All students take a research skills course and are supervised through a dissertation with a research component. There are options, such as Campaign Skills, Social Media Campaigning, Digital News Writing and Media Law, which are entirely practice-based and taught by professionals in the field. There are also several speaker series running each year with guests from the worlds of politics, journalism, business and campaigning coming to talk.

Theory is usually applied to a number of case study areas on, for example: conflict and war; elections; social and environmental debates; foreign affairs; the economy, finance and business; crime and disorder. Theory and discussion is always related to current events and debates.

Structure

The MA in Political Communications is built up of modules that must count up to 180 credits. The programme comprises:

Two core modules taught in the Department of Media and Communications (60 credits in total)
A research skills module
60 credits' worth of modules chosen from the Department of Politics or Department of Media and Communications. These can be a combination of 30 and 15 credit modules
Up to 30 of the 60 credits of options may be chosen from the departments of Sociology, Anthropology, English and Comparative Literature, and the Centre for Cultural Studies

Assessment

The MA is assessed primarily through coursework essays and written projects. Practical modules may require audiovisual elements to be submitted. It will also include a dissertation of approximately 12,000 words.

We give priority to those with proposals for research within the areas of interest of our staff.

Research degrees in this department have two elements:

-the research work that you carry out individually under supervision
-a programme of taught courses, which brings you into contact with other students within Goldsmiths

Supervisors and their students form loose research teams, sometimes on a joint basis with another group. When you apply, please indicate your intended research area and any preference for a particular supervisor.

The MPhil programme offers the opportunity for the student to continue their research to a PhD.

You'll be assessed by a thesis and viva voce.

AVPhD in Media and Communications

The Department also offers a PhD programme partially by audio-visual practice. We encourage applications from Doctoral candidates who wish to submit, as part of their thesis, a portfolio of practical work alongside a reduced textual component.

Before you start at Goldsmiths, the actual topic of your research has to be agreed with your proposed supervisor, who will be a member of staff active in your general field of research. The choice of topic may be influenced by the current research in the department or the requirements of an external funding body.

If you wish to study on a part-time basis, you should also indicate how many hours a week you intend to devote to research, whether this will be at evenings or weekends, and for how many hours each day.

Research proposals
