The focus of the course is on the strategic role events play in a modern society, and how they contribute to organisational and community objectives. The most recent evolutions in event strategy are at the core of the course, based on the research of our 25-strong academic research team.

Sheffield Hallam University is one of the top providers of events courses in the UK. As a founder member of the Association of Event Management Educators (AEME), we are involved in establishing academic benchmarks in events education. This innovative course has an innovative format based on a new learning and assessment strategy that puts you at its centre.

You take three core modules designed to replicate the real world, where problems are solved in an integrated way. Working closely with our Research Centre for International Tourism and Events Management, you will explore recent research and the challenges within the sector to help develop your potential to become a leader within the events sector.

We place emphasis on theory and practice and the development of core employability skills. You have the choice to apply for an 8 month paid work placement in a marketing role instead of completing either a dissertation or client project.

Approach to assessment

Assessment methods have been designed to support the teaching and learning process, and where possible provide a vehicle for learning rather than an assessment of learning. For example, participation within the design, planning, delivery and post-event evaluation of a real event provide opportunities to learn and apply theory and event management tools. The Dissertation and Client Project are self-managed activities organised by students, and supported by a tutor in the role of Supervisor who will provide regular feedback on progress. For the Work Placement Project module, a Supervisor will similarly be allocated and provide a central point of academic support for you during the length of the project. The placement project itself is secured by you and organised jointly between the Faculty of Business and the supporting organisation. Initial information and guidance will be provided during Professional and Academic Development for Marketers and Event Managers.

Within the remaining modules you are assessed in a number of ways, including individual and group reports and presentations, portfolios, reflective statements, and open briefs that encourage individual creativity. An optional Business in Practice Study Trip is offered to students in the form of a non-credit bearing module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies. 

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. This is a 'conversion' Masters course, and we assume no prior study of events. You'll learn though formal classes and seminars, as well as through group work, work-based learning and independent study. Course overview

This part-time Masters course is designed to give you a career advantage in the tourism and events sectors. Our course blends a social science approach with the development of job-related skills that are needed by, for example, events managers, festival coordinators and exhibition organisers.

We welcome applications from graduates of any discipline. You will study theoretical approaches through modules such as ‘Critical Tourism Theory and Methods’ and ‘International Tourism and Development’. There is a core module in ‘Events Management Studies’ and an optional module with a focus on work-based learning. We organise a number of field trips and company visits to put your learning into a real-world context. You can negotiate the topic of your Masters project to reflect your personal interests and career aspirations.

The University of Sunderland is a member of the Institute of Hospitality's Education Membership Scheme. The University of Sunderland’s tutors have active research interests which include cultural geographies of tourism, heritage management and events. You will be introduced to key concepts, including the psychology of consumer behaviour, how to create a marketing plan, hospitality operations and strategic financial management. You don’t need to have previously studied hospitality, events or tourism management and prior work experience is not required.

After completing your academic studies, you will have the option to undertake a one-year paid work placement as part of the course (sandwich mode). You will be fully supported in finding a placement and supervised throughout.

Teaching and learning

The innovative learning experience on this course is very much student-centred and interactive. You will take part in multicultural group work, case studies, workshops, seminars, lectures, events and one-to-one tutorials. Alumni and senior industry professionals contribute to the programme through guest lectures. You will have the opportunity to be personally mentored by an industry leader.

The tutors are internationally renowned for their research and consultancy activities, and their excellent links with hotel, tourism and events industries. They bring commercial expertise into the classroom to inform you of contemporary developments taking place in hospitality and tourism industries.

Approach to assessment

Assessment is based predominantly on individual coursework and the dissertation. There is an examination in the Strategic Financial Management module.

Field trips

Each year, there is a series of field trips to events such as the World Travel Market and visits to destinations, attractions, hotels, museums and the corporate office of a leading international hotel company.

Field trips are optional and are paid for by the student.

Attendance pattern

The full-time mode involves approximately 15 hours of contact time per week, but in addition there is a significant amount of independent and group study time. You will therefore be expected to take a great deal of responsibility for your own learning and to manage your time effectively.
