This Master of Science programme’s aim is to train highly qualified designers able to manage the competitiveness of the Fashion System on an international scale, both in its product development systems and within the strategic processes of fashion companies. Fashion at Politecnico di Milano is strongly committed to research and innovation, binding together high craft and high tech, the artisanal vision with the technological one, manual processes with the most advanced digital modeling softwares, in order to give the student the capability to work in any reality of the fashion system. Is your career aspiration to be a manager and business specialist within the international events industry? If so, this course aims to provide you with a specialist education in the management of international events to enable you achieve your aim. This programme will build on your existing knowledge and experience.

A key strength of the MSc is that it is modular in structure and delivered in blended learning mode with all modules being taught in 3 day intensive blocks. The block delivered modules are supported with online discussion groups and three learning set days per module.

- Teaching and learning assessment -

A range of teaching and assessment methods will be employed to develop learning through block delivery with the use of Blackboard Learn for dissemination of teaching and learning materials. As a student you will benefit first-hand from the research we undertake. Staff engage in research and consultancy activities within the event and tourism sector. In addition students will benefit from talks from industry leaders and working with live event projects. Methods of assessment will be both formative and summative. Methods include; short synopsis, reviews and peer reviews, case studies and business reports, computer modelling, individual and group presentations. No modules will involve formal examinations as a means of assessment.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

Events play a vital role in society, providing not only culture and entertainment for millions but also enabling cities and destinations to promote and regenerate themselves. Every facet of our society is involved in events, from business meetings and conferences to music festivals and sport.

Across this global industry, it is recognised that the events sector needs trained professionals if it is to continue to thrive and develop. This programme provides students with both the education and training to become a professional event manager, capable of organising both small and large scale events.

Through a balanced set of modules, students will gain advanced understanding in how the event industry works and develop expertise in planning and managing different events.

The programme aims to provide a high quality vocational education, which is intellectually rigorous and up-to- date, as well as relevant to the needs of future managers, executives and professionals in the service sector industries covered by the programme.

The programme has a business management orientation related to service industries and draws on a range of cognate areas of study to explain and analyse the particular sector. An integrated approach is taken so as to provide a coherent view that explores the interrelationships between the various components of the programme. At the same time by way of elective modules the programme permits students to pursue an element of specialisation relevant to their backgrounds, interests and/or career aspirations.

The Department of History options encompass a diverse regional, conceptual and methodological range to investigate religious, cultural and political history in both the Western and non-Western world from the 15th century to the present.

You also undergo training in Research Skills, which develops expertise in a variety of methodologies including the use of oral, visual and material, as well as textual, sources.

There will be a one-day, student-led, interdisciplinary research workshop to share ideas about projects and methodologies, and gain experience in event organisation.

And you'll complete a 10,000-word dissertation, based on primary research.

The continued growth of this industry has brought about an increasing need for flexible and skilled managers able to operate at a global, as well as national and local level. In a rapidly changing tourism environment, you are grounded in the skills necessary for strategic analysis and the knowledge necessary for informed and flexible decision-making.

About the course

The course is designed to cater for local and international professionals within the industry who wish to gain the necessary qualifications and theoretical awareness to enabling you to advance your careers or operations. It will also appeal to recent international and home graduates who wish to acquire the specialist knowledge and qualifications necessary in order to manage tourism operations.

This programme has a core set of modules, with all of the functional business management modules delivered in Stage 1: People Management and Development, Decision Making for Managers (Finance and Accounting) and International Tourism Marketing. In addition, a Research Method module is designed to clearly contextualising research in Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management. Students are also given the flexibility to create their curriculum by choosing three out of five optional modules. The programme can be undertaken anywhere in the world, as we use facilitative technologies to enable your engagement with the course team, fellow students and course materials. Normally, you will complete three blocks of 14 weeks study. After the completion of the taught modules you will have a further nine months to complete your Business Research Project. Employability & Careers

All students undertake a live consultancy project through the Industry Project Management module, which provides an opportunity to engage with employers in the industry. As part of this module, they have the opportunity to gain an accredited qualification from the Project Management Institute.

Student have the option to undertake the Internship module. The duration of this (unpaid) internship is either for a minimum of 20 days, which will normally be undertaken during term-time one day a week throughout semester one and semester two or in blocks of time during the semester breaks.

Alternatively, the students can undertake an internship (paid or unpaid) for the duration of 10-12 weeks (usually engaging in a full time role in an organisation) and this will normally be completed during semester three which would mean that the engagement with the final project would be deferred until September when the internship is completed and 120 credits are awarded.

Students undertake operational, supervisory and if possible, management tasks and duties within the organisation; During their internship students are expected to follow the same work pattern as other employees in the organisation and to perform routine work consistent with that which they aspire to on successful completion of their programme of study. They will also undertake a work based project tailored to meet the needs of the organisation. Students can opt for an individual consultancy project as their final project.

Work Experience Opportunities

As a full time, on campus student, you can elect to participate in a Work Placement – completing the module Organisational Culture and Work Environments, instead of Business research (consultancy project). These placements can enable you to develop your skills and knowledge in a work environment, with the aim to give you an advantage over the competition for jobs and scholarships after you graduate.

Your placement would last between six and 12 months, and be appropriate to the level of study and you should also be paid. We will support you in finding and securing a placement opportunity, however it must be noted that placements are highly competitive and there is no guarantee of a placement offer being made by an employer.

Whilst on a work placement you will attend two full-day workshops held at the university, and complete a research project based on the organisation in which you are working.

If you think a work placement is not for you, or are unable to secure a placement within the first nine months of the programme, then you will be automatically transferred to our Business Research (Consultancy) Project module to gain the required credits to complete the MBA. The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, skills, qualities and other attributes in the following areas:

The specificity of sport, with its high media coverage and numerous stakeholders, requires managers to have uniquely honed business skills and an in-depth knowledge of the principles of sports management. The MSc Sport Management has therefore been developed for those with aspirations towards senior or line management positions within the core functional departments of the sports management industry.

At UCFB we bridge the gap between academia and business. Students on our taught postgraduate programmes have significantly more contact time than those at traditional higher education institutions. In parallel to the academic curriculum runs the Complementary CurriculumTM; a journey of professional and personal development through learning and knowledge enhancement activities. The Complementary Curriculum allows access to industry leading guest speakers, industry opportunities and additional certificates such as the Prozone Performance Analysis and Green 4 Solutions Customer Relationship Management and The FA Level 1 and 2 Coaching award.
The MSc Sport Management is suitable for graduates of all disciplines and for professionals working within the sports industry, in management, marketing, operations or other appropriate areas, and who wish to build on that experience through a structured programme of study.

As a capstone to the MSc Sport Management degree, students may have an opportunity to specialise their academic experience by undertaking a research project with a sports organisation, leveraging UCFB’s global network of contacts with leading organisations such as The Football Association, BBC Sport and the US Tennis Association.

Graduates of the MSc Sport Management programme will be awarded degrees by our esteemed academic partner institution, Bucks New University.

Course content

Financial and Human Capital Management
This module develops students’ understanding of the ways in which financial and management information can be used to achieve competitive advantage. The module also examines the evolution of human resource management, human capital management, and their interaction with accounting and finance.

Strategic Sports Marketing Management
This module addresses the importance of marketing plans to sporting clubs and organisations and helps to develop well-informed strategic marketing plans, while critically appraising the range of academic material that is available to the sports marketer. While the module addresses practical aspects of marketing and takes account of the latest developments in social media and communication with customers, the main emphasis is on strategic marketing management and will require students to devise a plan and suggest ways of allocating their marketing budget.

Sustainable Stadium and Event Management
To explore current and future issues around sustainable sports management. The course uses the concept of sustainability to explore key contemporary issues such as: Types of sports venues, construction and refurbishment, venue design, event delivery, stakeholder management, venue marketing, and venue management. Each topic will include a balance between the establishment of a theoretical base, and the investigation of practical case-studies.

Leadership and Influence in Sport
The aim of this module is to understand the conceptualisation of leadership within the sporting and business world via the drivers of influence, mutuality and future.

Aims:
· Review different theories of leadership and their relevance to leadership practice, thus allowing learners to analyse critical incidents to judge organisational leadership performance.
· Understand how the role and nature of the organisation affects the leadership knowledge, skills and behaviour needed by senior leaders, while taking responsibility for own personal development and effectiveness in the leadership role.

Corporate Strategy in a Sporting Context
In order to be an effective sport manager, it is essential to possess a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the importance of corporate strategy in management, and to demonstrate how this can be applied in the area of international football and sporting management. Students will extend research skills alongside new analytical techniques in order to analyse the business environment. Students will be expected to show a critical awareness of how to carry out complex analysis of this information and explain the current strategic position of the organisation.

Current Themes in Sports Law
Sport is big business but the right to exploit its commercial value is not unfettered. This module explores how, under English and European Union law, an event organiser is able to exploit the commercial value of sport whilst also protecting its rights from infringement by third parties.

The module places this legal discussion in a multi-disciplinary context by examining the historical commercialisation of sport and how that contributed to the juridification of the sector and why and how some sports adopted various business models, for example the development of the Premier League and the Champions League. The module examines whether the specificities of sport preclude the application of UK and EU law to these business practices or whether the law should treat sport in the same way as any other economic activity.

Dissertation and Research Methods
The individual research project focuses on producing an in depth piece of work which has theoretical/ practical/ industrial/commercial relevance to the sports industry. Ideally, this will be a piece of industry sponsored work to produce a commercial output for the sponsor. The work need not be sports-related but mat be applied in the area of sports.

Capstone project

This Master's course provides the opportunity to undertake different types of project, a "Capstone" experience which completes the integration of your studies applied in one of the following:

• Professional Practice - the central aim of this unit is to provide you with a thorough understanding of the commercial context in which organisations operate. By reflecting upon your existing knowledge and experience you will be required to respond to a number of work-based scenarios through critical evaluation to determine an appropriate course of action.

• The Live Project - this will enable you to work as part of a team on a project provided by a business organisation. The exact nature of the level of work, and nature of responsibility will depend upon the chosen organisation. However, there will be close negotiation between the company and the Business School.

• The dissertation - this is a conventional dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words, enabling you to undertake in-depth research of a topic relating to your course. It will consist of research question, aims and objectives, rationale for undertaking the study, literature review, research methodology, analysis of findings, conclusions and recommendations.

Assessment

A large part of the assessment will relate to the demonstration of your ability to understand Event Management in practice.

It is the expectation of the course that you understand the theory and develop critical thinking skills, which will help you to evaluate the relevance of what you have learnt. All of this comes together by being able to demonstrate rigorous expertise for a business or related organisation.
