Work Placement

Gain hands-on experience in the industry with a 160-hour (minimum) work placement that will give you the opportunity to apply in a real business what you have learned in the classroom. The events industry is used to stimulate economies, increase tourism, develop community awareness, increase public involvement, enhance education, improve quality of life, generate revenue and market products. Professional event managers, working with stakeholders, are required to plan, organize, staff, direct, co-ordinate and evaluate events that meet client needs.

The MSc Sport Management has therefore been developed for those with aspirations towards senior or line management positions within the core functional departments of the sports management industry.

At UCFB we bridge the gap between academia and business. Students on our taught postgraduate programmes have significantly more contact time than those at traditional higher education institutions. In parallel to the academic curriculum runs the Complementary CurriculumTM; a journey of professional and personal development through learning and knowledge enhancement activities. Financial and Human Capital Management
This module develops students’ understanding of the ways in which financial and management information can be used to achieve competitive advantage. The module also examines the evolution of human resource management, human capital management, and their interaction with accounting and finance.

Strategic Sports Marketing Management
This module addresses the importance of marketing plans to sporting clubs and organisations and helps to develop well-informed strategic marketing plans, while critically appraising the range of academic material that is available to the sports marketer. While the module addresses practical aspects of marketing and takes account of the latest developments in social media and communication with customers, the main emphasis is on strategic marketing management and will require students to devise a plan and suggest ways of allocating their marketing budget.

Sustainable Stadium and Event Management
To explore current and future issues around sustainable sports management. The course uses the concept of sustainability to explore key contemporary issues such as: Types of sports venues, construction and refurbishment, venue design, event delivery, stakeholder management, venue marketing, and venue management. Each topic will include a balance between the establishment of a theoretical base, and the investigation of practical case-studies.

Leadership and Influence in Sport
The aim of this module is to understand the conceptualisation of leadership within the sporting and business world via the drivers of influence, mutuality and future.

Aims:
· Review different theories of leadership and their relevance to leadership practice, thus allowing learners to analyse critical incidents to judge organisational leadership performance.
· Understand how the role and nature of the organisation affects the leadership knowledge, skills and behaviour needed by senior leaders, while taking responsibility for own personal development and effectiveness in the leadership role.

Corporate Strategy in a Sporting Context
In order to be an effective sport manager, it is essential to possess a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the importance of corporate strategy in management, and to demonstrate how this can be applied in the area of international football and sporting management. Students will extend research skills alongside new analytical techniques in order to analyse the business environment. Students will be expected to show a critical awareness of how to carry out complex analysis of this information and explain the current strategic position of the organisation.

Current Themes in Sports Law
Sport is big business but the right to exploit its commercial value is not unfettered. This module explores how, under English and European Union law, an event organiser is able to exploit the commercial value of sport whilst also protecting its rights from infringement by third parties.

The module places this legal discussion in a multi-disciplinary context by examining the historical commercialisation of sport and how that contributed to the juridification of the sector and why and how some sports adopted various business models, for example the development of the Premier League and the Champions League. The module examines whether the specificities of sport preclude the application of UK and EU law to these business practices or whether the law should treat sport in the same way as any other economic activity.

Dissertation and Research Methods
The individual research project focuses on producing an in depth piece of work which has theoretical/ practical/ industrial/commercial relevance to the sports industry. Ideally, this will be a piece of industry sponsored work to produce a commercial output for the sponsor. The work need not be sports-related but mat be applied in the area of sports.

Our MSc in International Event Management requires an open, critical and inquiring mindset for the social-scientific and applied study of events and management. You will be expected to critically evaluate existing knowledge in the field of event management, debate key issues such as sustainability, ethical event production, or legacy planning, and consider strategic responses to forces impacting on events from the global operating environment.

This is an academic course with a high degree of vocational relevance. The content and delivery of the course is strongly underpinned by the course team's expertise, research activities and in many cases first hand experience of the industry. Industry expertise and application is drawn from areas as diverse as festivals, business events, marketing, consultancy, sport and leisure, all of which enrich the design and delivery of the course.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

Events play a vital role in society, providing not only culture and entertainment for millions but also enabling cities and destinations to promote and regenerate themselves. Every facet of our society is involved in events, from business meetings and conferences to music festivals and sport.

Across this global industry, it is recognised that the events sector needs trained professionals if it is to continue to thrive and develop. This programme provides students with both the education and training to become a professional event manager, capable of organising both small and large scale events.

Through a balanced set of modules, students will gain advanced understanding in how the event industry works and develop expertise in planning and managing different events.

The programme aims to provide a high quality vocational education, which is intellectually rigorous and up-to- date, as well as relevant to the needs of future managers, executives and professionals in the service sector industries covered by the programme.

The programme has a business management orientation related to service industries and draws on a range of cognate areas of study to explain and analyse the particular sector. An integrated approach is taken so as to provide a coherent view that explores the interrelationships between the various components of the programme. At the same time by way of elective modules the programme permits students to pursue an element of specialisation relevant to their backgrounds, interests and/or career aspirations.

Where appropriate it is international in scope and coverage. The programme draws on the stimulus of the School’s recent research activities.

The programme provides the students with the basis for developing their own approach to learning and personal development.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, skills, qualities and other attributes in the following areas:
-Demonstrate a systematic in-depth understanding of the development, characteristics, issues and influences relevant to international events management
-Demonstrate a high level of theoretical and applied knowledge of the management, operation, organization and provision of international events
-Demonstrate an understanding of the research process
-Evaluate independently critical approaches and techniques relevant to international events management
-Evaluate outcomes and accurately assess/report on own/others work with justification and relate them to existing knowledge structures and methodologies
-Demonstrate high level learning and problem solving abilities in the range of modules studied identify modifications to existing knowledge structures and theoretical frameworks and therefore to propose new areas for investigation, new problems, new or alternative applications or methodological approaches
-Conduct research and produce a high quality dissertation: this includes the ability to select, define and focus upon an issue at an appropriate level; to develop and apply relevant and sound methodologies; to analyze the issue; to develop recommendations and logical conclusions; to be aware of the limitations of the research work

-An awareness of key, contemporary issues facing the events industry with regard to development
-Gained insight into issues of strategic development and will develop the skills required to identify, analyse, critique and provide solutions to these issues

Key / transferable skills
-Students will be able to demonstrate a range of skills which are relevant to the needs of existing and future managers, executives and professionals irrespective of their sector of operation. These are particularly in the areas of analysis and synthesis, communication and presentation skills, computing skills, critical reasoning, data analysis, organisation and planning, report and essay writing skills, interactive and group skills, research skills.

Course detail

The structure aims to be both simple and comprehensive. You will follow four core modules, which will provide an overall foundation for management in the relevant industries, clearly introducing basic concepts, working approaches and methodologies.

We organise field trips and visiting speakers to put your learning into context. The mix of academic rigour and vocational relevance is designed to give you a long-lasting career advantage.

Suitability

The programme is designed for those who have an interest in the tourism sector generally and are also keen to focus on the growing field of event management. Events have become synonymous with tourism in recent years. They have become major destination attractors and contribute hugely to community pride and identity. Events range from conferences to arts festivals, to major sporting tournaments designed to regenerate post-industrial cities.

The programme is of particular relevance, though not exclusive, to recent graduates of event management, tourism management or related disciplines.

You can study MSc Tourism and Event Management Programme on a full­time (one year) or part­time (two year) basis at our Canterbury campus.

Content

The four core modules have been carefully written to prepare you for employment or study whilst being employed, and then fully prepare for the dissertation that completes the totality of the programme.

You will also select two optional modules which offer you the chance to study two bespoke areas of management. To prepare you for employment and/or career enhancement, employability skills and attributes are embedded into each module.

Events related tourism is growing at an incredible rate and this programme has been developed in consultation with leading professionals to meet the need for specialist managers who can apply their skills to this interlinked field.

The programme will also offer you a variety of workshops to help you prepare and/or enhance your career in the tourism and events management industries.

Assessment

Term 3: Business Project or Dissertation

In the summer, you will complete a 12,000-word dissertation on a business topic of your choice. This can be based on independent academic research or a business project (a real commercial challenge sourced by you or the school). Supervised by a faculty member with relevant experience, you’ll investigate in greater detail a subject that you’ve already studied as part of your programme.

This is an opportunity for you to develop your business insight and present your analysis and ideas in a scholarly and professional manner; combine critical discrimination and a sense of proportion in evaluating evidence and the opinions of others.

Adding to your experience

International Experience
If your ambitions lie beyond the UK, we offer a number of places on our unique Dissertation Abroad scheme. This will involve writing a dissertation at one of our international partner institutions in the period June to August. A number of scholarships are available

Guest Speakers
As part of your programme, you have the opportunity to enjoy presentations by academics and practitioners within your chosen area of interest. Past speakers have included representatives of major global multinationals such as Google, Deloitte and Sage in addition to leading academics, providing an ideal opportunity to gain practical knowledge and progressive insight.

Other admission details

In order to manage the volume of international applications received by the University to allow the University to ensure each application is properly reviewed, considered and processed, applications from candidates must be received as follows:
-Applications from individuals resident in Mainland China must be received by 31 January.
-Applications from any other individuals who would be required to hold a visa in order to study in the UK, must be received by 30 June.
-Applications from those individuals who fall outside of either category specified above, must be received by 31 August.

Should you miss the deadlines specified above, then it may be possible for the University to add your application to a waiting list, which may be consulted in the event that following review and processing of all applications received prior to the deadlines, vacant places remain available on the programme.

The University is under no obligation to make any offer of a place on the programme to any applicant, nor is the University obligated to fill all spaces available on the programme. Consideration of any application received by the University after expiry of the deadlines specified herein, shall be made at the sole discretion of the University.
