Is your career aspiration to be a manager and business specialist within the international events industry? If so, this course aims to provide you with a specialist education in the management of international events to enable you achieve your aim. This programme will build on your existing knowledge and experience.

A key strength of the MSc is that it is modular in structure and delivered in blended learning mode with all modules being taught in 3 day intensive blocks. The block delivered modules are supported with online discussion groups and three learning set days per module.

- Teaching and learning assessment -

A range of teaching and assessment methods will be employed to develop learning through block delivery with the use of Blackboard Learn for dissemination of teaching and learning materials. As a student you will benefit first-hand from the research we undertake. Staff engage in research and consultancy activities within the event and tourism sector. In addition students will benefit from talks from industry leaders and working with live event projects. Methods of assessment will be both formative and summative. Methods include; short synopsis, reviews and peer reviews, case studies and business reports, computer modelling, individual and group presentations. No modules will involve formal examinations as a means of assessment.

Methods of Learning

The programme can be undertaken anywhere in the world, as we use facilitative technologies to enable your engagement with the course team, fellow students and course materials. Normally, you will complete three blocks of 14 weeks study. You will be expected to interact with the course team in online activities and in significant additional study, learning and networking and to engage online in development activities associated with your achievement of the professional body memberships and awards. After the completion of the taught modules you will have a further nine months to complete your Business Research Project. The distance learning programme normally runs twice a year with September and February starts.

Per module you should expect to spend between 10/20 hours per week engaging with online activities and study through NILE as well as self-directed study time.

Assessments

Course structure

The course is organised into three-hour blocks of teaching and seminar activities, which are based on specialist reading, research and case studies. Modules are assessed through essays, reports, group work, presentations and examinations.

You'll be taught in small groups, through individual and team tutorials, seminars and workshops, supported by lectures from key figures in advertising and related media. The course replicates the experience of working in a typical full-service agency and your project work will be delivered within that context. As well as working individually, you'll work in copywriter/art director pairs and groups to strengthen your communication and negotiation skills. Our Virtual Learning Environment provides information to assist you with research and project work.

This is a one-year, full-time course delivered over 45 weeks and divided into three 15-week study blocks:

- Study Blocks 1 & 2

Study Block 1 focuses on strategic thinking as the first step in fulfilling clients' briefs. If your specialism is art direction, you'll learn vital layout and typography skills, as well as developing your appreciation of photography, film, illustration and fine art, and their application to advertising. For copywriters, a range of practical projects will further your writing skills, helping you write in a clear, lively and visual style to stimulate your audience.

During London Study Week, we visit a number of major advertising agencies (see Building professional experience).

- Study Block 3

In Study Block 3, you'll produce a portfolio that will help your transition into this competitive industry. Working with a partner – copywriter or art director – your portfolio can include live projects negotiated with agencies and clients, supported and advised by the course team.

The course's practical elements are substantiated by theoretical studies in Visual Culture & Communication, where you'll research and analyse advertising within changing cultural contexts. The Applied Technology unit gives you hands-on IT training, including using software packages like InDesign, Photoshop, imaging, file conversion, typography and web development.

Students will work in groups and delve deeply into their cases during the seven months from October to June under the supervision of a GGSB coach.The Live Business Cases are launched by a briefing given by the company.

LIVE BUSINESS CASES WILL COVER:

- Innovation, entrepreneurship, and management issues from an integrated, holistic perspective.
- A capstone opportunity for students to apply theoretical principles from coursework and lectures.

AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE LIVE BUSINESS CASE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

This course/workshop is an introduction to all group assignments to be carried out all through the year. In order to help you to be efficient when working in small groups, you need to know not only your personal strengths and improvement points but also those of your class.

By discovering them during this course, you will be able to imagine together how to leverage the strengths of your class and how to manage your improvement points. You have to manage the classroom as a company, so we will appoint different representatives in charge of the main aspects of the construction of the class as a performing team: event manager, class representative, timekeeper, project leader, MSc community leader, and Alumni communication and coordination manager. These representatives and their teams will draft an action plan for the coming year.

Foreign Languages

Foreign language skills are essential in business today and the program is taught in English but provides the possibility to learn a foreign language at the same time. What is Business Development?

Students graduating from the MSc Business Development also receive a certificate conferring them the title of Manager International. This title, recognized by the Commission Nationale de la Certification Professionnelle - an agency belonging to the French Ministry of Labor - attests to the successful acquisition of a core of international management skills and knowledge necessary for future roles as managers in an international context. The Manager International label is registered on the Répertoire National des Certifications Professionnelles at Level 1, the highest level for such certification.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The Victoria Building is a modern, bright building with purpose-built studios and workshops, including photographic studios, audio visual and computer imaging facilities. The University's Library has a well-resourced Art and Design section and a specialist librarian. The MA studio provides a range of facilities and work space.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Teaching involves a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, presentations and industry liaison, and assessment is continuous. Theory underpinning practice is developed simultaneously throughout each semester and Negotiated Agreements Parts I and II allow students to acquire the ability to develop and refine proposals, which underpin their major projects, and reflect on personal progress. Students are expected to contextualize their work within a current framework, and develop evaluative skills in order to articulate their point of view. Research Methods and Application introduces students to a range of analytical research tools, forming the basis for all in-depth self-directed projects on the programme.

The course aims to develop students’ intellectual and imaginative power through a programme of study that is formed from cohesion between theory and practice. Across this global industry, it is recognised that the events sector needs trained professionals if it is to continue to thrive and develop. This programme provides students with both the education and training to become a professional event manager, capable of organising both small and large scale events.

Through a balanced set of modules, students will gain advanced understanding in how the event industry works and develop expertise in planning and managing different events.

Event Management is an industry with its own rulebook: The challenges of international sporting events require a particular set of skills. The master’s degree program in International Sport & Event Management offers an interdisciplinary, international education that prepares you for managerial roles in sport, event, and marketing management. All the main branches and fields of the industry are covered. Special highlights include case studies, seminars, and projects with partners from the world of business and science.

Our international focus is reinforced by an optional semester abroad, for which you can gain an additional academic degree (complementary international degree: MBA in Sports Management).

Course Outline

The main skills required for sport, event, and marketing management are the ability to communicate, to think in an interdisciplinary way, and to lead a team. In addition, International Sport Management is geared toward leadership roles in sport, while International Event Management focuses on planning and organizational roles. International Marketing Management complements these two subject areas.

To reinforce the vocational focus, the program was developed in conjunction with experts from Ernst & Young (SCORE – Sports Consulting) and Weirather-Wenzel & Partner, with the involvement of communication agencies. You are thus equipped with in-depth knowledge and practical experience to embark on your career.

All classes are conducted in English. The optional semester abroad takes place at Real Madrid Graduate School in the second semester. By choosing this option, you can gain an additional academic degree alongside your master’s degree at BiTS without extending the study period (complementary international degree):

The MSc International Events Management programme offers you an engaging environment in which to explore the challenges faced by events professionals.

A balanced set of modules will provide you with an advanced understanding of the international events industry and the core areas of business and management generally.

A series of challenging, creative, real-world assessments will teach you how to design, plan, stage and evaluate different events. Central to the learning experience is the requirement to run a live event yourself.

The structure of our Euromasters programme includes the opportunity to undertake a placement in industry between the two years of study.

This experience gives students (particularly those with little prior work experience) a significant advantage in terms of employability upon graduation.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

Events play a vital role in society, providing not only culture and entertainment for millions but also enabling cities and destinations to promote and regenerate themselves. Every facet of our society is involved in events, from business meetings and conferences to music festivals and sport.

Across this global industry, it is recognised that the events sector needs trained professionals if it is to continue to thrive and develop. This programme provides students with both the education and training to become a professional event manager, capable of organising both small and large scale events.

Through a balanced set of modules, students will gain advanced understanding in how the event industry works and develop expertise in planning and managing different events.

The programme aims to provide a high quality vocational education, which is intellectually rigorous and up-to- date, as well as relevant to the needs of future managers, executives and professionals in the service sector industries covered by the programme.

The programme has a business management orientation related to service industries and draws on a range of cognate areas of study to explain and analyse the particular sector. An integrated approach is taken so as to provide a coherent view that explores the interrelationships between the various components of the programme. At the same time by way of elective modules the programme permits students to pursue an element of specialisation relevant to their backgrounds, interests and/or career aspirations.

Where appropriate it is international in scope and coverage. The programme draws on the stimulus of the School’s recent research activities.

The programme provides the students with the basis for developing their own approach to learning and personal development.

The curriculum is designed to allow you to pursue opportunities within specialist fields of study to an advanced level, including undertaking an extensive independent project or dissertation of your choosing.

You will gain understanding of organisations, managerial techniques and arts practices in the current arts and cultural landscape in the UK. The backdrop of Centennial College's Event Management courses is a new 350,000-square foot facility that includes a spectacular 20,000-square foot event centre perched on the top of a new building with a view of Toronto's skyline and Lake Ontario.
