Students who have completed an undergraduate business degree in Canada may be eligible for up to 9 course waivers (post curriculum review). In addition to completing the program in less time, this option also saves you money as tuition is charged on a per course basis.

There is an emphasis on the need for human resource professionals to add value to their organisations and to develop throughout their career. This long established MA will develop your ability to apply advanced knowledge of HR into diverse environmental contexts, and to develop analytical and behavioural skills crucial when working in the profession.

The programme provides you with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Advanced (Level 7) Standards. On completion of the programme, student members upgrade to Chartered Member, evidencing experience, behaviours and academic achievement. Specialist modules in Resourcing and Talent Management, Managing Performance, Employment Relations and Organisational Development are supported by core modules in Strategy, Leadership and Business Context. Research methods underpin the Dissertation stage which involves a detailed personal piece of work supported by tutors and peers through dissertation workshops.

The programme is delivered in three ways to fit with your personal requirements. Full time normally involves three days plus one evening of study. Part time involves a part day (2.00pm start) plus an evening (7.30pm finish). Year one classes for part time are on Mondays and year two classes on a Thursday. Evening only study is from 5.30 to 7.30 on both Monday and Thursday evenings. The taught element of the programme is completed within one year full time and two years part time.

If you already have the CIPD’s Advanced Standards qualification and would like to gain a Masters degree, you can top up to Masters level. You will study the Research Methods for HR professionals module either one afternoon or evening each week from September to December and join the Dissertation workshop sessions on completion of your Research Proposal.

This is an Advanced Level programme, recognised by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) as providing the necessary knowledge to apply for Chartered Membership. On graduation, you will be eligible to receive an Advanced Level 7 Diploma from CIPD.

COURSE DETAILS

The programme is intended for those who currently work in the field of human resource management and development and who require professional accreditation and advanced formal qualifications.  The aims are:

  • to improve the effectiveness of HR managers within their organisations
  • to develop a critical awareness of the potential of human resources to contribute to organisational performance and development
  • to provide a basis from which to develop and enhance your career.

You will be equipped with the knowledge and specialist skills to effectively select, motivate, manage and reward employees to maximise their potential and the potential of their respective organisations. COURSE STRUCTURE

There are 4 30-credit modules, 3 of which will be taken in Year 1 (1 per semester) and the fourth taken in Semester 1 of Year 2:

1) Strategic International Business Management (CIPD)

2) Employment Relations and Law

3) Resourcing, Learning and Talent Management

4) Project Management, Leadership and Skills: Planning and Control

The order in which the 4 30-credit modules will run will vary from one academic year to the next.

Following the fourth module, you will work on the Business Innovation Project (Management Research Report) in the final 2 semesters of Year 2.  There are two options available depending on level of qualification you are studying for.

TEACHING

Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials using a wide range of learning activities.  You will make substantial use of interactive learning through the University's Virtual Learning Environment, and will access a wide range of academic journals and texts which are available in both paper and electronic formats. Tutorials allow you to reflect on lecture materials and benefit from group work and discussion with your peers.

Each module is delivered two evenings per week for six weeks.  Taught over two years, the course is made up of 4 x 30 credit modules and finishes with a 60 credit Business Innovation Project which you can base around your own or another organisation.  The project is completed in your own time and offers an opportunity for you to apply your knowledge and skills in a more flexible environment.

ASSESSMENT

During your course, a range of assessment techniques will be used. Types of assessment include: essays, assignments, exams, multiple-choice tests, online tests, group reports, portfolio work and practical skills.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management and the MA in Human Resource Management will progress your career and enhance your HR professional practice. You will develop core HR skills and knowledge as well as the ability to understand and evaluate issues of strategic importance to HRM.

These part-time programmes are studied through a combination of on-campus and online learning. You will benefit from the flexibility of our virtual learning environment and also face-to-face interaction with tutors and classmates.*

The programme is fully accredited by the CIPD against the Advanced Knowledge Standards. You will gain Associate membership of the CIPD on successful completion of your course.

In Year 2, you can choose to study for the full MA in HRM or opt for the Postgraduate Diploma in HRM. Both lead to Associate membership of CIPD and there is a full briefing during Year 1 to help you make this choice.

If you already have a Postgraduate Diploma in HRM from any educational provider, you can make use of our Direct Entry MA Human Resource Management Top Up option. This involves one module and a dissertation over one academic year and results in an MA HRM award.

The MA HRM and PG Dip HRM are practice-based and academically rigorous, providing you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for the challenging role of a human resource professional. Both programmes are fully accredited by the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) and mapped against the Advanced Diploma in HRM. Both programmes enable you to gain Associate Membership of the CIPD and as these qualifications are at Advanced Standard, this enables higher membership grades of the CIPD to be achieved with experience, rather than further study.

CIPD membership

It is a requirement of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development that all students enrolling on a CIPD HR Programme are student members of the CIPD and pay membership fees to the CIPD. The cost of this is not included in your Oxford Brookes fees. If you are already a student member you are still required to register your continuing professional development with the CIPD, and we ask that you provide us with your CIPD number. You can find details of the CIPD's current student membership fees on their website.

Teaching and learning

On-campus sessions involve tutor input, analysis of case studies, problem-solving activities, virtual business simulations, presentations, analysis of data for decision making, and directed reading and research. Some skills development is best addressed in more intensive workshops and such events will focus principally on:

  • team building and problem solving
  • people management skill sets (eg. interviewing, negotiating, managing disciplinary and grievances)
  • leadership and influencing skills
  • data handling and presentation skills using IT applications

Both on-campus and online learning are fully supported by our library, with almost all resources (journals, reports and many books) now being available electronically 24 hours a day.

Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed individually with a range of assessment methods being used. These include individual assignments, group work, presentations, examinations, a portfolio to demonstrate continuing professional development, and individual research reports. Some assessments include an element of peer and/or self-assessment.

Field trips

We offer an International Business in Practice Study Trip module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. If you successfully complete this module you will have the following non-credit bearing module recorded on your transcript: P58335 International Business in Practice: Study Trip.

Attendance pattern

The course is mainly delivered through two taught semesters per year running from September to May. Each individual module consists of up to 12 sessions offered through a blend of on-campus and online learning. For each semester the on-campus element will take place through up to five early evening sessions (5-8pm) and three full-day Saturday sessions. In year one the evening sessions are on a Tuesday; in year two evening sessions are on a Wednesday. In addition, there is one full weekend workshop in the first year. Those sessions offered online will on occasion require you to join a virtual classroom at a specific time in the early evening but will mainly be completed in your own time, using online learning materials and taking part in online discussion fora.

If you study the full MA Human Resource Management rather than the Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management you also complete your dissertation over a third semester in the summer of the second year. If you’re completing the full MA, you have the option to do your research methods and dissertation modules entirely online. Note: this revised course delivery pattern is subject to CIPD approval.

Through the course we explore alternative conceptions of childhood and youth and consider children and young people's lives and experiences through the social, economic, technological and global contexts in which they are situated.

For full-time students, a typical programme would be:
all day Thursday and two evenings per week on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, depending on module choices.

Attendance patterns take account of the fact that most part-time students are in full-time employment, so that over two years all modules will be available in a form suitable for part-timers.

Research highlights

We are home to the Oxford Brookes Poetry Centre, which creates a space for discussion and research, as well as promoting connections between poets, academics, and readers of poetry in the local community. It also sponsors readings by poets, such as Simon Armitage, and a regular seminar series.

The department also has particular strengths in 20th century fiction, modernist culture, gender studies, Romanticism and the environment, Renaissance writing including drama and performance history, 19th century fiction, Irish and American writing and culture, and post-colonial writing.

Some recent research highlights include:
- Dr Eric White was recently awarded a Vacation Visiting Fellowship at the Rothermere American Institute (RAI) in the University of Oxford. The focus of his research programme at the RAI was The Transatlantic Avant-Garde: Little Magazines and Localist Modernism, 1912-1932, which culminated in the production of his first monograph. Transatlantic Avant-Gardes: Little Magazines and Localist Modernism was published by Edinburgh University Press in 2013. Eric also focused on ways to develop American and transatlantic modernist studies across institutions in Oxford.

- Dr James Hawes, Reader in Creative Writing, is the author of six novels with Jonathan Cape including a Sunday Times bestseller and two novels adapted to the screen starring Joseph Fiennes and Michael Sheen respectively. He is currently working closely with the king of UK adaptation, Andrew Davies, on a screen version of Speak for England. His latest publication entitled Englanders and Huns: How Five Decades of Enmity led to the First World War' came out in 2014.

In addition to the Bodleian and its unparalleled collection of books and rare historical manuscripts, there are affiliated libraries such as Rhodes House, home to the Bodleian Library of Commonwealth and African Studies, and the Vere Harmsworth Library of the Rothermere American Institute, where students will find one of the finest collections of publications on the Political, Economic and Social History of the United States from colonial times to the present.

Oxford is a lively centre for events, exhibitions, seminars and open lectures in various specialist areas of history, which staff and students at Brookes regularly attend.

The city is also an easy bus or train ride to London for convenient access to an even wider resource of historical materials. These include various seminars and lecture series offered by the University of London and the Institute of Historical Research. In addition, The National Archives at Kew, The British Library and other specialised libraries will be of particular interest to students.

What You'll Learn

The MA Multimedia Journalism at GCU includes all the key skills and knowledge you will need to begin a career in journalism.

Shorthand, Government, Law, and News & Online Writing are all compulsory subjects, with classes in these subjects and skills running every week for the entire length of the diploma programme.

In the first trimester, each week you will have practical classes in news reporting and feature writing; sub-editing & print production; and radio/TV/online journalism and production skills; as well as a weekly class studying and reflecting on Journalism in Context.

Then in second trimester the practical balance moves towards more demanding specialist reporting skills (court, council, financial, for example), and live multimedia newsday team productions, plus a specialist option.

The programme therefore is quite intense and the timetable busy, but nevertheless in each trimester almost one-third of the 39 hours in the week's timetable is left free, to enable you to do the reporting work off-campus and self-directed production practice your subjects will require you to put in.

Work Placement

You are guided by a journalist lecturer advisor in seeking and obtaining not less than 10 days’ work experience in a journalism organisation by the end of the diploma, and not less than a further ten days by the end of the Masters.

Mostly this will be undertaken during vacation and assessment weeks, but there are possibilities of individual day shifts and up to one week only during teaching weeks, by negotiation with the programme leader.

Agreements are in place for placements with all major news and journalism organisations in Scotland, across TV , radio, newspapers, magazines and online.
