The LLM Legal Practice course incorporates the Solicitors Regulation Authority requirements of the Lega Practice Course (the LPC). The course not only bridges the gap between the academic study of law and the vocational stages of training, but also incorporates a masters level qualification.

In order to obtain a Masters, students are also required to complete either a dissertation, a live project or a placement. Following successful completion of the course, you will then need to undertake a two year vocational training contract to be able to practice as a solicitor.

Course Structure

The LLM Legal Practice is a demanding course and is a leap forward from your undergraduate study. The emphasis of the LPC element of the course is much more on the practical aspects of law and the aim of the course is to ensure you can enter practice with the skills and knowledge required to hit the ground running. You will be expected to keep up with background reading and class preparation and should expect to treat the course as if you were already handling a client’s case.

The Masters element of the course allows students undertake a piece of disciplinary relevant research at Masters level, which will take the form of either a dissertation, a live project or a placement.

How you learn

The LPC elements of the course are taught face to face. Classes on the full-time course run from Mondays to Wednesdays from 9am to 5pm. Classes on the part-time course run on a Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6pm over two years.

The compulsory subjects and skills taught on the LPC section are prescribed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Each subject is introduced with a summary lecture providing guidance on difficult topics relating law to practice. The focus of learning is on small group teaching sessions, in the form of interactive workshops that enable you to explore key areas of law and practice in detail.

Small group sessions are also used to involve you in typical transactions encountered in practice. You can expect to carry through tasks as if you were in practice, working in teams, using electronic and other information sources.

The Masters element requires completion of an online Advanced Legal Research module followed by self-directed research. The self directed research is supported by face to face meetings with an individually allocated supervisor.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates will normally proceed to a training contract to complete their qualification as a solicitor. The vast majority of LPC graduates go on to become qualified solicitors in a range of organisations across many specialist areas. The Legal Practice Course (LPC) aims to prepare you for employment as a trainee solicitor and to provide you with a solid foundation for subsequent practice as a solicitor. This course can be studied full-time or part-time (day or evening). In the most recent (2014-15) Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey, 98.2% of graduates from this course were in work or further study within six months.

More about this course

This course provides graduates who have completed the academic stage of legal training with the professional stage of training required to qualify as a solicitor. We have a long-standing reputation for training solicitors and were one of the first universities to be validated to run the Legal Practice Course.

The course emulates the nature of the work encountered in practice and is transactional, following clients through various legal transactions and court hearings. It builds on the substantive law that you will have already learnt and includes the study of both law, and procedure in the major areas of practice. It also teaches the 'lawyerly' skills of practical legal research, interviewing and advising, writing, drafting and advocacy to prepare you for your subsequent professional training and for practice as a solicitor.

The LPC is entirely taught in a modern building with a mock court room, audio visual recording facilities, IT resources and library. Materials and case studies are provided.

Teaching is highly interactive and you will be taught in a small groups in three-hour sessions. The tutors are accessible and friendly and classes are supplemented with online tests and revision lectures and materials. The emphasis is on face to face teaching although some lectures, covering more complex subjects, are available online,. The overwhelming response from student feedback is that they prefer live contact with tutors and fellow students. You learn by “doing” on this LPC.

Students attending on either the one year full-time or the two year part-time LPC are required to attend an intensive foundation course for the first week of term in September from Monday to Friday, 10am until 5pm. Compulsory attendance is required for all students, irrespective of whether you are studying full-time or part-time. Please take this into consideration when arranging work, family and holiday commitments.

You can choose to have all your face-to-face tuition and workshops for the core practice areas concentrated into two set days a week on our one year course. This is usually Tuesday and Thursday from September until June. It enables you to reduce your travelling costs and plan your week. You attend an average of 12 hours face to face contact per week with the remaining time devoted to private study. Please note however, you may have to come into the university on additional days for assessments. Also Stage 2 elective subjects may run on different days.

Students who wish to complete the Legal Practice Course over two years can attend either in the evenings or during the day. The part time evening classes are taught from 6pm until 9pm on Tuesday and Thursday in the first year and Monday and Wednesday in the second year. The part-time day classes are taught from 10am until 5pm on Friday in the first year and on Monday in the second year.

Assessment methods are designed to reflect how solicitors work today, and include skills assessments and open book examinations.

The Course consists of a series of 18 evening lectures held weekly starting at 6.30 pm on Wednesdays. During the course students are tutored on a one to one basis in the preparation of their 10,000 word Case Study, their 2,000 word Career Evaluation and their PEDR, professional experience record, monitored by the Course Director.

The Part 3 Course is validated by RIBA and prescribed by the Architects Registration Board. Appropriately qualified candidates who pass the Part 3 Examination with two years professional experience are eligible to apply to the Architects Registration Board to register as Architects.

Candidates who do not have a recognised Part 2 in Architecture may wish to do the taught course as a CPD activity and to improve their knowledge of Professional Practice. In this instance they will not be eligible to apply for RIBA Part 3 examination.

Modules

The course starts with a eighteen week evening lecture course supplemented with tutorials, case-study seminars and study groups.

This course aims to prepare Architecture students who have RIBA Part 2 with adequate professional experience coming forward to the Part 3 Professional Practice examination. The Professional Practice course covers salient and significant areas of the Professional Practice syllabus as set out by RIBA including; current building legislation, planning, contract law, types of building contract, management of architecture, practice and construction, financial control, business management, professional liability and dispute resolution.

Four weeks before the written examinations there is an examination preparation seminar to guide students for the examination and by "playing the contract game" acquaint them with the workings of a JCT contract.

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course commences in January each year. Producers have overall responsibility for making programmes happen. They begin work in the development stage and work right through until the programme or series is delivered to the channel and transmitted. Therefore this unique course is structured around three key areas - developing shows and understanding the factual programming market; producing a show; and delivering a show and managing the show post transmission.

Students will be taught by leading producers and commissioners responsible for some of the UK’s most iconic UK factual shows such as Educating The East End, Salvage Hunters and Bear Grylls.

In addition, there is the possibility – for those that wish to pursue it and subject to availability – to undertake a two week attachment with a production company or broadcaster in the UK.

This level 7 course seeks to train and support student teachers in the field of Post-Compulsory Education and Training (PCET). This includes further education, adult education, work-based training and community education.

Students will acquire the necessary skills to work as a teacher in PCET by undertaking practice-based placements as well as course work.

Students studying for a PGCE PCET at Birmingham City University will benefit from our strong partnerships, as well as learning from expert teaching staff and professionals in the workplace. KEY FACTS
This course is a nationally-recognised qualification for graduates teaching in further education.

The course features a subject specialist part-time route which trains you to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and also covers adult literacy and language teaching.

We have partnership arrangements with most of the large further education colleges in the West Midlands, as well as prison education units and a number of training agencies and private providers.

Full-time trainees undertake at least 150 hours of teaching in their main subject area and are all supported by a subject specialist mentor.

COURSE STRUCTURE
The course begins in September. Those on the full-time, one-year course will spend two days each week at the University and three days a week on placement.

Those enrolling on the generic part-time course, which will take two years to complete, will attend classes at the University one evening each week and will spend at least one day a week on placements each year.

Gaining practical teaching experience is central to the course.

There is no final examination, however, all parts of the course must be satisfactorily completed before the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Education in Post-Compulsory Education and Training can be made.

These awards do not confer a license to practice but do form a route to Qualified Teacher/Tutor/Trainer Learning and Skills (QTLS). The PGCE PCET does not lead to Qualified Teacher Status which is required for school teaching.

EMPLOYABILITY
This course allows you to progress your career in the Post-Compulsory Education and Training sector and forms part of the route towards attaining QTLS. A high number of our trainees take up teaching positions in further education colleges, sixth form centres or training agencies.

FURTHER STUDY
The MA Education and Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) are flexible part-time programmes intended for those working in all education sectors, in work-based training environments or those who may have a general interest in education. The Research component of the course encourages independent learning, providing you with an opportunity to develop your own professional practice interests in initiating and taking responsibility for a research project and dissertation, contributing to the development of knowledge within the systemic field. The course aims to help you develop your work with families and couples, to increase and consolidate your theoretical and clinical skills and your understanding of the use of the self in practice. The inclusion of a wide range of approaches is an important characteristic. It is part of the course philosophy to encourage you in the development of a critical approach to theory and practice examining the inequalities and differences for example of race, class, gender, and to encourage an ethical and anti-discriminatory approach to clients. Use of self and self-reflexive practice is a core aspect of training,

A particular feature of the course are the Power and Diversity group plenaries, which support you in developing your understanding of issues of power and discrimination. These plenaries supplement and support the acquisition of these skills in your supervision group to apply this understanding in your therapeutic practice.

Subject to the agreement of your agency, you will be expected to bring your own case material for discussion and video or audio recordings of your work. Where appropriate signed, informed consent will be obtained from families for this purpose. For review of work during the course through DVD consultation, the consent forms for therapy include consent to record and review for the purposes of training. The academic and experiential learning provided encourages you to develop a broad critique and to apply a range of interventions in family and other related contexts in which you have a professional role. .

The course is the final stage of training leading to qualification as a family / systemic psychotherapist and eligibility to register with the UKCP.

The part time structure of the course enables you to continue in your employment while you study. The combination of evening and day time study and its central location make it accessible geographically to students from different parts of the UK. Tutors and supervisors are all registered systemic psychotherapists and systemic supervisors, many of whom have a PhD, combining academic rigour which is also grounded in clinical practice, contributing to a rich learning experience.

Assessment

The spirit of the course is developmental learning and the promotion of connections between different aspects of the course and modes of learning. You will build on the skills and learning achieved in your Foundation and Intermediate level courses, taking them to a greater level of complexity.

The course employs a range of assessment strategies which respond to the learning outcomes of the course. The strategies include written assignments that give you the opportunity to show your systemic writing skills and critical use of the literature, particularly in the Research and Theory Units. In extending this assessment strategy, in different units on the course you will produce written analyses of your systemic work with clients showing the development of your application of theory to practice in both your course and agency-based places of work, as well as in vivo presentations. The strength of this strategy is that it draws on a range of strengths, and applies equally well to organisational dilemmas as well as case consultations and gives you the chance to extend your systemic thinking beyond the frame of direct work.

Career/Further study opportunities

This course qualifies you to practice as a family and systemic psychotherapist, and to apply for registration with the UKCP. Depending on your background and first professional qualification you may also have the possibility to apply for designated family therapist posts within the NHS. Following the Munro Report published in 2011 opportunities are beginning to open up for family therapy posts within the Social Care context, and a growing number of independent and third sector agencies are interested in having a qualified family / systemic psychotherapist on their staff, or providing consultation to their work. Other students go on to develop independent practice, often alongside posts within the statutory sector

Qualified practitioners with post-qualifying experience are eligible to apply for further study to become qualified systemic supervisors.

They may also apply for further study at Doctorate level, contributing to the development of knowledge within the field.

Students also use the increased confidence in their written and academic abilities to contribute written articles to journals within the field, for example the Journal of Family Therapy and to further develop their research interests.

This is a part-time course which is a significant and useful training in its own right but also connects the Foundation course and the advanced clinical training (MSc in Systemic Family Therapy). Additional support needs or special educational needs could include challenges in the areas of:

Teaching, learning and assessment

Teaching is comprised of a combination of lectures, group exercises, projects and on-line discussion. A fully distance (on-line learning) option is also available. Methods of formative assessment include evaluation of critical incidents, case studies, work based projects, self appraisal and/or reflective reports, and online discussions and postings. Summative assessments comprise written assignments submitted at the end of each module. Normally, there are less than 20 students on this course. This ensures that individuals receive excellent support and benefit from sharing their experiences with like-minded professionals.

Teaching hours and attendance

The usual timescale for completion is two years. Class contact at QMU or distance learning options are available. If you choose to study with class contact, course content will be delivered through two to three Saturday and Wednesday evening sessions with additional on-line activities. For distance learners there is no class contact and modules are accessed using Queen Margaret University’s virtual
learning environment: comprising self-directed study and on-line activities. Distance learners and classroom learners will collaborate together using the same virtual learning environment.

Objectives

At the end of the Novels MA course, you will be very different; you will have written a novel.

This MA allows you to focus on one of two areas: Literary Novels or Crime Thriller Novels. As a focused, high-intensity course, we only have a maximum cohort of 14 students each year for each genre, therefore you must apply and be awarded a place for Literary Novels or Crime Novels at the outset.

At the core of the Novels course is the experience of established writers. Everyone who teaches on this MA course is a working, published novelist. Their experience underpins all the teaching.

Everyone who teaches on this course is a published and working novelist – we strongly believe that only published writers understand everything it takes to write a novel. The core of the teaching comes in one-to-one tutorials which are used to discuss a minimum of 10,000 words of your novel in progress. Thus, across the two-year programme we read and discuss more than 200,000 words of creative writing by each student.

In the first two terms, we aim to provide you with your toolbox for when you start the novel. This covers every way in which you might approach constructing and writing and polishing your novel: we look at the word, the sentence, the paragraph, the chapter and the entire plotting and structuring of a full-length novel. During these terms, we encourage you to experiment with your writing, to find skills and aptitudes you didn’t know you possessed. We also examine published novels, taking them apart like clockmakers, to see how the constituent parts make them tick. That said, there is no literary criticism on this course – we are not theorists, we are a craft-based course, teaching you the techniques and devices (and pitfalls) required when writing your first novel.

In addition to the tutors and lecturers, there are Q and A sessions with visiting guest authors in each term.

Modules

For this course you are required to write 2,000 words a week for 100 weeks. 2,000 in order to generate 1,000 polished, edited words. During the first two terms, the exercises require 1,000 words each week. For the remaining 80 weeks of the course, you need to write a novel and the average length is 80,000 words. This is a serious course for serious writers who want to work hard and write better.

In addition, during the first two terms there are two other modules requiring an analysis and an outline.

The focus is for you to finish a novel and use City’s unparalleled industry links to help start our literary career as a published novelist.

At the end of this course, you will have the manuscript of your novel and we will do everything we can to assist you to find an agent to represent you who will then work to find a publisher for it.

In addition to completing the program in less time, this option also saves you money as tuition is charged on a per course basis.

Students may also choose to accelerate their program by opting to complete additional courses during the Spring and Summer semesters.
