Facility- and Real Estate Management are considered nowadays as important parts of the overall business. As a result of this development managers of these departments are more involved in the company’s strategy than ever before and this involvement is not only from a secondary process viewpoint. Assets and facilities services together are responsible for the appropriate support of the primary processes and its stakeholders. Together with the core business they are partners in a kind of joint venture for the benefit of all the stakeholders. Departmental borders get blurred and all business processes interfere. Therefore the Facility- and Real Estate managers have to think and to manage in terms of strategy, choices, visions and goals of the overall business.

Planning should be done in the context of the company business plan. This is based upon the insight that assets and facility services together are responsible for the appropriate support of the primary processes and its stakeholders. The program consists of three terms of 4 month each. In Term I the focus is on Strategic Business Management and Strategic Building Management. In Term II the focus is on Strategic Asset Management and Strategic Facility Management. Next to this there is an Module Academic Skills that will be attended during term I and II. Term III is completely focused on the dissertation or thesis, a most valuable instrument for students to customize the program by doing elaborated research on a subject of their own choice. COURSE STRUCTURE

This course can be studied full-time, part-time on campus, or part-time by online distance learning. Admission onto the course is in September or January.

The Masters award consists of four taught modules followed by a Research Methods module and Dissertation. The PgDip requires the completion of the four taught modules. All modules are delivered over a 15 week period and are assessed through written coursework.

FOR THE FULL-TIME STUDY OPTION:

You will study two 30 credit taught modules in each of your first two semesters, these are designed to give you the core knowledge required in construction management. In the final semester you will undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits.

FOR THE DISTANCE LEARNING STUDY OPTION:

A 30 credit taught module is studied in each semester for the first 24 months. Assessment of these modules is driven by real-world problems aligned to your workplace and job role. Teaching is based around a virtual learning environment supported by interactive online sessions.

FOR THE PART-TIME ON CAMPUS STUDY OPTION:

Part-time students attend the University one day per week, usually on day release from employment in industry. A 30 credit module is studied each semester. Throughout the final two semesters you choose to undertake a dissertation or research by design project.

Mohammad is responsible for the strategic leadership of the Faculty of Arts, Environment and Technology,having joined our University in June 2011 from the University of East London. A well published researcher, with over 50 refereed conference and Journal publications, his research profile includes many funded research programmes including JISC and EU FP7 projects. Mohammad’s first degree was in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He then went on to complete a PhD in the 'Design, Development and Evaluation of Multimedia Based Learning Systems' at Kingston University. In 1989 he set up one of the UK's first multimedia PC companies, 'Systems 2000'.

Teaching and learning

Teaching, learning and assessment methods are to a considerable degree determined by the use of the applied learning approach which leads to a more challenging and industrially relevant course than the traditional lecture approach. Learning takes place through groups of students puzzling through problems, often adapted from real situations with much of the complexity and context intact, using published resources, or reference to experts who are available to offer advice.

In full-time mode, the delivery of new material is weekly with intermediate tutorial or seminar sessions. The intensive study weeks and a European field-trip, when students in both modes of study come together, complement this delivery pattern. For the open-learner, the virtual learning environment is the primary mode of delivery. Communication with open-learning students will be supplemented by email and telephone during the periods off-campus.

Approach to assessment

Assessment is 100% coursework, which includes a great variety of types of work, including quizzes taken remotely on Moodle (Brookes online learning environment). Material can be downloaded from our virtual learning environment and closed discussions can take place. It also enables on-campus and open-learning students to remain in contact with each other.

Field trips

A European field trip is a compulsory element of the PGCert modules. It typically takes place over a five-day period towards the end of January and is heavily subsidised by the department.

The aim of this field trip is to consolidate the knowledge gained in the early part of the course and to develop team and other relationships through exposing our students to European project management practices and to assess their ability to observe and report on the different approaches to project management in the UK and in a European country.

The field trip normally consists of visits to prominent construction/engineering projects and sites, plus architectural attractions, both en route and at the destination. The overall teaching, learning and assessment strategy of this course is that you are at the centre of learning and teaching, which has a particular focus on the reflective learner and the development of professional skills and applied research. To achieve this and to ensure that you are exposed to a wide range of learning and teaching methods, we use lectures, seminars, workshops, action learning sets, group work, problem based activities, guest speakers, on-line learning via Moodle, site visits, study trips and discussion forums.

Our teaching is very interactive, and you are encouraged to share your experience and opinions with your peers. Critical thinking is vital in Master’s study, and you are required to develop your own ideas and come up with solutions to problems based on solid evidence and logical analysis.
