The MSc Real Estate is a conversion programme for graduates from other academic disciplines and is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). It is one degree programme with three distinct pathways:
-Commercial/Residential Real Estate
-International Real Estate
-Hotel and Hospitality

All three pathways are viewed as a single cohort. The programme will provide you with all the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the real estate profession and will prepare you for the challenge of completing the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) to become a Chartered Surveyor.

The MSc Real Estate is available for full-time study only. Given the intensity of the programme, you are advised to live in or near Oxford. Please note this course has a September start only.

Come to our MSc Real Estate Visit Day to find out more about the programme and the University - http://rec.brookes.ac.uk/events/msc-real-estate-visit-days.html

Why choose this course?

All MSc Real Estate students will be paired with and mentored by a recent graduate from the programme who will support and help in careers' advice, study and professional development. The majority of the teaching staff are professionally qualified as Chartered Surveyors, Planners, Lawyers or Accountants, each of them is dedicated to providing excellent teaching.

Learning is enhanced by external speakers, field trips and management support from the industry, provided by seven of the major international real estate consultancies who sponsor the programmes: CBRE, Cluttons, Cushman & Wakefield, GVA, Jones Lang LaSalle, Knight Frank and Savills. The programme has always enjoyed a very successful level of graduate employment. Our students find employment in both the major international real estate consultancies and local firms.

The programme is well respected in all areas of the industry and we also have alumni in real estate management companies, banks, financial institutions, government bodies and corporates. The small cohort (about 40 students each year) means more individual attention, excellent group dynamics in lectures/discussions, good opportunities for socialising, sharing experiences, supporting each other and creating lasting friendships.

Teaching and learning

The philosophy of the MSc programme is to provide you with a theoretical framework in the early modules and to build on this in the latter stages with practical, real life examples and case studies.

Learning methods include lectures, seminars, tutorials, project work and independent study. Teaching is organised around the component modules, involving a total of around 20 hours of teaching time per week over each 12-week teaching semester.

The semester system requires examinations to be taken at the end of each teaching period. It is a very intensive course and you undertake a substantial amount of private study and project work. The Real Estate Markets module draws together the different subjects taught on the programme and incorporates a number of field trips in the UK and Europe.

Careers and professional development

The MSc Real Estate programme at Brookes is highly respected in the profession.

In the case of UK students, it is normal for our students to secure employment before the programme ends. Most students work for the big international real estate companies in London, but our students have also been successful in securing employment in smaller niche practices in London or in other areas of the country.

A Cass Masters degree is your gateway to a career in real estate. From Cass Real Estate you will get courses which:

• Equip you with the core skills required by the industry embracing valuation, financial analysis, development appraisal, market analysis and cash flow modelling.

• Are set in a framework of robust quantitative methods, financial and economic theory.

• With an emphasis on up to date industry techniques and practical tools taught hands-on in computer labs.

The MSc in Real Estate Investment requires a previous degree with a substantial quantitative element – which could be in social sciences like economics, geography or business so long as they have a good measure of statistics, econometrics, or in the sciences or engineering. Graduates from this course mostly enter the same businesses as those from the MSc Real Estate – indeed some go on to graduate entry programmes of the chartered surveyors – but will be qualified for more analytical roles within those businesses.

Visit the website: http://www.cass.city.ac.uk/courses/masters/courses/real-estate-investment#courses-details=1

Course detail

Overall the MSc Real Estate Investment could be labelled as a degree in finance which is focussed on real estate. Since the topics and methods you study are of interest to all real estate businesses, including the mainstream employers like chartered surveyors, the MSc Real Estate Investment may give you a wider choice of the role you play but it does not pre-determine what sort of firm you work for.

Term 1 of the course gives you a grounding in the core skills of the real estate professional. You cover basic appraisal methods applied to valuation, development and financing of investments, plus a quantitative methods module incorporates econometric modelling. Those techniques are put in a wider context through a module on real estate economics and an investment markets module which ranges across all asset classes and financial instruments

Term 2 is more about applications of those core skills and principles. In Capital Markets you cover the different forms of indirect real estate – REITS, core and opportunistic funds, and derivatives. In Debt Markets you take in mortgage lending, mezzanine finance, mortgage-backed securities. And in term two you look in more detail at the financial instruments based on real estate – REITs, Mortgage Backed Securities, derivatives. Portfolio risk management deals with the role of real estate in investment portfolios and the mix of assets within real estate portfolios.

In term three, you pick a set of three elective topics from around six modules specific to real estate plus a range run by other Cass Masters programmes – some of them taught on trips to locations outside the UK. So you can focus on:

• Core real estate topics like building management, sustainability, residential markets.
• Or pick up on more general topics such as private equity and project management taught by experts from other Cass programmes.

And the last block of your course, the Business Research Project (BRP), is the one you design and build for yourself, in the form of a report of around 8,000 words submitted in August. We see the BRP as your opportunity to have a showpiece which shows potential employers what you know, what you can do, your ability to produce good-quality individual work.

Format

To satisfy the requirements of the degree programme students must complete:

• Eight core courses
• Three electives
• Business Research Project

Two Induction Weeks The MSc Real Estate Investment starts with two compulsory induction weeks, focused on:

• an introduction to careers in real estate and the opportunity to speak to representatives from over 75 companies during a number of different industry specific fairs.

• a refresher course of basic financial mathematics, statistics, computing and electronic databases

Assessment

Assessment of modules on the MSc in Real Estate Investment, in most cases, is by means of coursework and unseen examination. Coursework may consist of standard essays, individual and group presentations, group reports, classwork, unseen tests and problem sets. Please note that any group work may include an element of peer assessment.

Career opportunities

In recent years, real estate students have been some of the most heavily recruited of all Cass MSc degrees because:

• From week one, we host recruitment visits from all the largest real estate employers – like CBRE, JLL, Cushman Wakefield, Savills – plus other firms in real estate fund management, development, finance.

• Our real estate specialists in the Cass Careers Service hold contacts with businesses across the industry, and will notify you of job opportunities as they come in through the year.

• You will have un-matched opportunities to network with professionals and employers across London’s vibrant real estate industry at seminars and an annual conference run by our students’ Real Estate Club, and through our mentoring scheme which matches you up with a Cass graduate, and through industry events outside Cass,

The largest proportion of our students go on to the graduate entry schemes of major firms of chartered surveyors in the UK, going through the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence to become qualified professionals.

The others go into a very wide range of employers and roles – with smaller niche agencies, fund managers, developers, investment banks, lending banks, public agencies, rating agencies, research companies, not to mention setting up their own businesses. Many will go on to professional qualifications outside real estate, such as Chartered Financial Analyst Institute.

Around half our students come from outside the UK, many of them take up jobs in other countries with the boost that a degree from Cass, accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, is a widely recognised and highly valued qualification world-wide. And they will generally find Cass real estate alumni already there to form the base of their professional network.

The Integrative Professional Practice module draws together the different subjects taught on the course and enables you to develop strong interpersonal communication via a series of face-to-face role-plays.

In addition to the taught modules (see below), there is also an umbrella module, Real Estate Markets, which incorporates a number of field trips in the UK and Europe.

Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed individually, through coursework such as submission of reports and presentations, and/or formal written examination.

Specialist facilities

Students taking the MSc Real Estate benefit from the allocation of a dedicated base-room in the newly redeveloped Abercrombie Building. The majority of teaching takes place in the base-room which also houses a suite of PCs.

Field trips

One of the most important elements of the MSc Real Estate programme is the field trip schedule, which helps you to build on your learning by giving you the opportunity to see how things are done in practice. These start in the induction week with trips around Oxford and London.

In the autumn, there are further day trips to London and a three-day residential field trip to another major city in the UK. In the spring we have further day trips, and in the summer we have a five-day residential trip to a major European city.

In each case, the intent of the field trips is to 'add flesh to the bones'. In the classroom, we can talk about how things should be done. It is only when on these trips that a student can appreciate how things are done in practice.

The cost of field trips is included in the programme fees.

How this course helps you develop

The MSc Real Estate, although grounded in academic excellence, is a practice-based programme for students wishing to become chartered surveyors. Professional links

The MSc International Real Estate is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is the world's leading professional body for setting standards in the surveying industry. They have accredited our degrees and diplomas for almost 50 years.

Expertise and history

London South Bank University has a long history of educating professionals for the building-related industries. With roots in London Council School of Building (1904), Brixton School of Building (1940) we have been offering training for this sector for over 100 years.

Today we are expert at attracting property and construction students from the UK and around the world. Much of this is down to the highly successful links we have with major real estate consultancies, property companies, contractors, cost consultants and developers to ensure our courses are highly relevant for the current market.

Today, according to the Guardian PG subject tables 2013 we are the largest School of Building and Town Planning in the UK (combining full-time and part-time modes of study) and our building graduates have the best employment prospects in London (Complete University Guide 2014).

Our current students and alumni hold key positions in their organisation, often as senior managers and business owners.

Placements

- Surveying Project
Our surveyors look at financing a project, procuring construction work, financial management and the entire construction process. We want our students to have 'real world' experiences while studying at LSBU, of field work is a major component. We create these situations by inviting guest speaks in to give up-to-date lectures, having great industry links and taking our students into situations where they would like to work. Most of our surveying and construction courses give our students the opportunity to carry out a construction project. Their work will take into account current construction technologies, energy efficiency solutions and environmental and sustainability issues. The project is very detailed and is carried out across site visits, analysing on-going construction projects and an appraisal of eco-technologies. These factors can be influenced by a construction's location so our field trips can take our students both overseas to expanding countries like Dubai or round the corner to building developments happening on our own campus.

- Market report and case study analysis
Students on our MSc Surveying courses can choose to study International Real Estate & Construction as an optional. For this complex module students need to go on a study visit to an international city which has an emerging real estate and construction market.

Past students have gone abroad to take in either Dubai in the United Arab Emirates or Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. The field trip includes visits to real estate companies and construction firms, site visits and meetings with various professionals. From these briefings, students need to produce a country report that includes a detailed strategy including how they could break through in the real estate or construction market in these overseas destinations.

The MSc in Real Estate equips you for roles across the full spectrum of the real estate industry, and is open to those with previous degrees in any discipline. The absence of “investment” from the label does not mean you won’t be covering the financial and appraisal skills needed to work in fund management, banking or other areas of the investment industry.

This degree offers a choice of pathways, which you don’t have to choose between until your second term. If you are targeting the graduate-entry programmes of the London chartered surveying firms, one pathway gives you more UK-specific skills in law and taxation. If you are targeting jobs in investment, finance, development or expect to work outside the UK, the other pathway tilts toward more analytical skills and international markets.

The MSc in Real Estate opens up roles across the full range of our very diverse industry including surveyors, fund managers and banking for students with any previous degree.

If you aim to join the graduate entry programme of the major UK real estate employers and take the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence you can pick modules that tilt toward UK-specific topics in law, tax and applied valuation. If you aim to work in fund management, finance or outside the UK, you can tilt toward advance financial modelling and international markets. Either way, your choice will not pre-determine the jobs available to you. For all employers, a Masters from Cass is the most important thing, the mix of topics you have studied much less important.

Format

In our first term, you get get the portfolio of core skills that equip you to achieve that goal – taking in quantitative methods, investment appraisal, asset management and real estate economics.

In the second term, core module choices provide two learning “pathways”.

In term three, you pick a set of three elective topics from around six modules specific to real estate plus a range run by other Cass Masters programmes – some of them taught on trips to locations outside the UK. So you can focus on:

• Added core real estate topics like building management, sustainability, residential markets.
• Or on the investment aspects of the industry like REITs, real estate funds and portfolio construction.
• Or pick up on more general topics such as private equity and project management taught by experts from other Cass programmes.

And the last block of your course, the Business Research Project (BRP), is the one you design and build for yourself. It takes the form of a report of around 8,000 words submitted in August. We see the BRP as your opportunity to have a showpiece which shows potential employers what you know, what you can do, your ability to produce good-quality individual work.

Assessment

Assessment of modules on the MSc in Real Estate, in most cases, is by means of coursework and unseen examination.

The real estate markets have become global. That urges for real estate professionals who are trained in integrating financial and economic-geographic skills with knowledge of local institutions.

The real estate markets have become global, making the real estate profession an international enterprise. At the same time global, commercial brokers report huge differences among local real estate markets. That urges for real estate professionals who are trained in integrating financial and economic-geographic skills with knowledge of local institutions.

The Department of Economic Geography at the University of Groningen is one of the leading centres in Continental Europe in real estate. It offers a Master of Real Estate Studies that integrates financial engineering, location theory and planning.

Why in Groningen?

The master in Real Estate Studies is based on economic geography and planning, rather than financial or business studies and technical sciences. This gives the course in Groningen a unique profile compared to other master programs in real estate. The program has a multidisciplinary character.

Job perspectives

Many graduates find jobs as market researchers or real estate consultants in a company, consultancy or government agency, or become a concept or property developer at a real estate investor. Graduate students find work as a research manager or portfolio manager at a real estate investor. Several people opt for an academic career at the university. In practice, graduates mostly do policy work, both in the private sector as well as at the local, regional and national government.

Research

The program of the master in Real Estate Studies is related to the major research sub-disciplines in spatial sciences. Interim results of the research projects are integrated in to the course.

Research in geography & planning focuses on the interrelationship between property and spatial environment. Geographical and planning literature provides insight into how location decisions are made and the role of institutions. These aspects are reflected in courses like 'property and land markets' or 'real estate development'. The research in economic geography focuses on a deeper understanding of choice of locations. This choice is based on economic and financial motives. In the research in real estate development, the interests of various economic actors are important; the landowner, the developer, the builder, the investor and owner / user. The spatial economic and financial-economic research provides insight into the considerations. The business and management-oriented studies contribute to understanding the value chain and processes in real estate development. These aspects are reflected in subjects like 'finance', 'property investment' and 'property development'.
