The two-year Master's programme is meant for students who are fascinated by the complexity of human movement. You will study human movement from multiple perspectives, using theories from Medicine, Biology, Mathematics and Behavioural Sciences.

In this programme, you will acquire an advanced theoretical understanding of human movement. You will also gain research skills and professional skills, learning to apply your knowledge in a practical setting.

The programme has two central themes. In 'motor function and cognition in healthy ageing' you will explore how physical activity and innovative solutions can prevent chronic diseases, and preserve cognitive function. You will also study slow aging. In 'rehabilitation and functional recovery' you will improve your understanding of impaired movement and the restoration of functioning in rehabilitation practices.

It is possible to do a crossover between the Master's programmes in Human Movement Sciences and Sport Sciences.

The two-year Master's programme is meant for students with a scientific fascination for sport. You will study athletic behaviour from multiple perspectives, using theories about cognition, psychology and physiology.

As a student of this programme, you will acquire an advanced understanding of issues in the field of sport sciences, both applied and fundamental. You will practice in measuring and analyzing sports performance and gain familiarity with research methods and advanced statistics. Also, you will learn to develop optimal programmes to teach and train sport-related abilities and skills.

The programme is concentrated around four research areas. The first centres on physical activity, sports and cognition in children. The second deals with talent identification and development. Perception, action and decision making in sports is the third area. And in the fourth, you learn about performance analysis and optimization in sports.

MA Product Design is a Masters award within the MA Art and Design programme at the School of Creative Arts. Public awareness of hazards and risks has enhanced the importance of safety assessment and management in today’s increasingly litigious society. Worldwide the burden of responsibility for health and safety is shifting towards those who own, manage and work in industrial and commercial organisations. Legal reform is tending to replace detailed industry specific legislation with a modern approach in which, where possible, goals and general principles are set and the onus is on organisations to show how they manage to achieve these goals.

The management of safety and risk needs to be integrated into the overall management of the organisation. It should be appropriate and cost-effective without dampening the innovative entrepreneurial spirit of employees with inflexible bureaucratic rules and procedures. An organisation’s exposure to potential hazards needs to be managed so as to reduce the chance of loss and mitigate any effects. Risk and safety issues need to be evaluated in a structured and calculated manner but in the light of an overall organisational strategy.

The MSc/PG Diploma programme in Safety and Risk Management aims to provide students with advanced knowledge of risk assessment techniques, the public and individual perception of risk, and how decisions are made in competitive business markets. The focus is on practical applications of safety methodologies, ergonomics and human factors, and safety and risk management techniques.

All of these skills will be drawn together to undertake complex qualitative and quantitative risk assessments. The core of the programme is the management of safety, but it is set within a broader remit where safety issues are part of a general risk management system with a balance of financial, quality and environmental concerns. The overall aim of the programme is to develop students’ skills and personal qualities to be able to undertake safety studies and manage safety and risk to the best national and international standards.

Professional Recognition

Programme Content

The MSc/Postgraduate Diploma in Safety, Risk and Management is only available by attendance-free distance learning. The programme comprises eight courses. All courses have written examinations and some have compulsory coursework elements. MSc students are also required to complete an individual project (dissertation).

For the project component of the programme distance learners are likely to develop something based in their country of residence with advice and supervision from staff in the School. This may well include work with a local company or may involve independent study. Individual arrangements will be set up with each student.

• Risk Assessment and Safety Management
This courses aims to give students an appreciation of risk from individual and societal perspectives as well as understanding the basic principles of risk assessment and modelling and how safety management works in practice.

• Human Factors Methods
This course will equip students from academic and/or industrial backgrounds with knowledge on, and the means to deploy, a wide range of specialist human factors techniques. The emphasis is on method selection, application, combination and integration within existing business practices. Students will develop a critical awareness of what methods exist, how to apply them in practice and their principle benefits and limitations.

• Human Factors in the Design and Evaluation of Control Rooms
The course will equip students from academic and/or industrial backgrounds with in-depth knowledge on, insights into, and the means to deploy a wide range of specialist techniques relevant to the ergonomic design and evaluation of control rooms. The emphasis is on key areas of control room operations and on actionable ways to deploy theory on human capabilities and limitations in order to improve performance, safety, efficiency and overall operator well being.

• Fire Safety, Explosions and Process Safety
Introduces students to the basic principles of fire safety science and engineering, and develops skills in associated modelling leading to an understanding of principal fire/explosion related issues in process safety.

• Environmental Impact Assessment
Provides the candidate with the knowledge and understanding of the principles and processes of the Environmental Impact Assessment. By the end of the course, the student should be familiar with the European EIA legislation and its translation into the Scottish planning system, and be able to demonstrate an understanding of the EIA process, the tools and the agents involved in an EIA and the possible problems with using EIA as a decision making tool. . It is also intended that the student will be able to appreciate the purpose of the EIA process from a number of perspectives; that of a developer, an EIA practitioner and a policy maker.

• Project Management Theory and Practice
Provides students with an understanding of the concepts and practices of construction project management used to provide value added services to clients within the constraints of time, cost, quality sustainability and health and safety management.

• Learning from Disasters
Gives students an in depth understanding of some of the classic disasters and their consequences by using a range of practical accident investigation techniques. Students will learn to analyse complex histories in order to find the underlying root cause.

• Value and Risk Management.
Aims to introduce the concepts of value and risk management, apply them to strategic and tactical problems and illustrate their tools and techniques through case study.

There's the annual IOSH Student Research Poster Competition for students on BSc or MSc degree courses (in occupational safety and health or a cognate subject). Students are entered into the competition by their course tutor.

Finalists have the opportunity to showcase their research at the IOSH Conference and Safety & Health Expo in London, and also receive a cash prize. A number of our MSc graduates have been winners and runners-up. 

Learning & teaching

This course is by distance learning only, delivered online via the University's Virtual Learning Environment, Myplace. Each stage of the programme is available with tutor support, providing students with an appropriate level of guidance, assessment and feedback.

Faculty members are currently conducting applied project and research work in the areas of contemporary manufacturing processes/systems, ergonomic/biomedical analysis, logistics and supply chain management, sustainable design and development, systems engineering/product development, and systems simulation.

Plan of study

The MS degree is awarded upon successful completion of a minimum of 30 semester credit hours of study. This includes eight courses and a 6 semester credit hour thesis. All students are required to complete at least two semesters of Graduate Seminar (ISEE-795, 796).

As a graduate of this course, you will have knowledge necessary to recognise, evaluate and control hazards in the workplace, including chemical, physical and biological agents.

In the taught component of the course, the emphasis is on acquiring a thorough understanding of the theoretical principles and research methodologies underpinning the topic covered by each unit.

Emphasis is placed on the development of your critical appraisal skills and your capacity to lead an occupational health team at a senior management level.

The dissertation provides an opportunity to develop experience in applying these principles and research methods to a problem of particular interest to you.

Aims

The primary aim of the course is to deliver academic training in disciplines relevant to occupational hygiene. The course aims to provide you with:

  • an appreciation of the skills necessary to recognise, evaluate and control hazardous substances in the workplace, encompassing hazards such as chemical, physical (eg. noise, radiation), biological and ergonomic agents;
  • an introduction to the wide variety of aspects covered within the occupational hygiene discipline such as legislation, toxicological basis for standard setting, methods commonly used to evaluate hazardous agents, and related and overlapping health professions;
  • an academic qualification that is accredited by the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene (FOH) within the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS);
  • a good foundation on which to build and extend your knowledge of occupational hygiene during the changes and developments which lie in the years ahead.

The MSc aims to:

  • encourage critical evaluation of ideas and concepts in occupational hygiene and exploration of other philosophical and practical approaches to minimising ill health in the workplace;
  • develop powers of critical appraisal, analytical thinking and logical argument.

Teaching and learning

The course comprises a blend of specially commissioned written materials in electronic format (PDF), together with interactive teaching material, all delivered via the University's virtual learning environment, Blackboard.

In Year 1, you are required to attend in Manchester for a 1 day seminar associated with Module 1 in month 3, and the same for Module 2 in month 5 and for one exam day in month 10.

You are allocated to tutorial groups for Modules 4 to 8, each supported by a specialist in occupational hygiene. Tutorials are delivered via telephone or web conference.

In Year 2, you are required to attend in Manchester for a four-day practical course in Month 5 and for one exam day in Month 10.

In Year 3, you are required to attend a three-day MSc dissertation course held at the University in Month 1.

All examinations are held at the University.

Some components of the course are held jointly with students on our MSc Occupational Medicine course.

Coursework and assessment

All taught course units will be assessed via examinations held at the University at intervals throughout the course, and the third year will be assessed via submission of a dissertation.

Assessment is by eight examination papers, one per course module. The first will be taken at Seminar 1 (Year 1, Month 3) and the second at Seminar 2 (Year 1, Month 5). The remaining Year 1 assessments will be taken in Month 10. For Year 2, assessments will be held in Month 5 and 10.

If you wish to proceed to the MSc, you are also required to complete a third year, during which you will attend a mandatory three day residential course (in Month 1) and prepare a dissertation.

With the Master’s programme Applied Cognitive Psychology, you will apply the most up-to-date knowledge of cognition to situations and solutions for problems that occur in daily life. Students will apply knowledge of human cognitive, sensory and motor systems in real-life situations.

Processing information

During this one-year programme, you will learn about processing information, especially about how you can use that information to advise clients on how to improve communications. That knowledge is useful for making signage or advertising more effective, for example, or for making products more user-friendly.

Students also learn to come up with solutions for a wide range of problems that can occur in professional practice. Humans are dramatically changing their environment using increasingly complex technology, such as the Internet, social media, robotics and automation. In order to design a living environment that is well suited to human cognitive abilities, we must have a good understanding of how humans process knowledge and their skill at applying it.

THE PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAMME

Once you have completed the Master’s programme, you will be a true academic professional who can apply scientific knowledge in day-to-day practice, such as acting as an independent consultant on ergonomic problems. As a member of an interdisciplinary team, you will contribute to solving these problems together with designers, policy makers, technicians, computer scientists and business experts. You can also advise on the sensory aspects of marketing communications. As a person with a Master’s degree, you will also have developed excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate with all sorts of audiences.

The purpose of this module is to provide you with knowledge and understanding of the core concepts related to Adult Auditory Rehabilitation including principles of health psychology and signal processing as well as technical and psychosocial aspects of the rehabilitation process. As an Audiologist or Hearing Aid Dispenser this will help you to assess the needs of adult patients with hearing loss and provide patients with accurate and up to date information in order that they can make informed decisions about their management and treatment including devices, equipment and features.

Module Aims

  • Equip you with the basic knowledge and understanding required to provide a clinical auditory rehabilitation service for adults with hearing loss and/or tinnitus or to pursue research in a hearing-aid related field.
  • Enable you to apply your practical and theoretical knowledge and comprehension to all aspects of the rehabilitation needs of adult hearing-impaired patients and adult patients with tinnitus.
  • Enable you to develop skills to critically evaluate and analyse information from the relevant scientific literature.

Learning Outcomes

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • Explain and critically analyse the arguments for, and the current consensus on, patientcentred rehabilitation for adults with hearing loss, including the assessment and analysis of need, effects of psychosocial factors, the provision of accurate and balanced information regarding management options, the facilitation of the patient’s decision making (especially regarding technology) and the role of communication strategies and tactics.
  • Formulate evidence-based recommendations for the rehabilitation of individual patients with common forms of hearing loss and tinnitus based on critical evaluation of a range of sources of information including that shared by the patient and the research literature.
  • Explain the process of individualised hearing-aid fitting on the basis of audiometric and other information, including the selection of an ear-mould/shell with appropriate modifications, the verification of the technical performance and other functional properties of a hearing aid (both in a coupler and the real ear), the validation of the fitting and the provision of relevant instructions and information to the particular user.
  • Identify and describe a wide range of different technologies (e.g. hearing aids, assistive devices, auditory implants), strategies (e.g. communication), skills (e.g. facilitation) and tools. (e.g. counselling and decision making tools) and other resources potentially available to the audiologist and patient to improve the patient’s hearing-related quality of life and explain their main pros and cons for common forms of hearing loss and psychosocial circumstance.
  • Demonstrate mastery of effective self-directed learning, scientific and patient-centred communication.

Methodology proposed

This Masters project involves the design and development of a novel eco-efficient off-grid study pod for our campus. The research aim involves creating a functional prototype to serve as a test-bed to explore off-grid mobile study-spaces. The project will lead to the creation of a lightweight shell structure with interior, all of which is capable of incorporating state of the art, off-the -shelf renewable technologies (solar PV, wind (HAWT), DC storage and heat-pumps). The design should create a study/work environment supported by natural light, high-air quality and excellent acoustic performance. The robust ergonomic design will be powered via renewables and can operate independently or link up to form larger pod clusters. The shell structure will have an exoskeleton layer to support the integration of alternative of off-grid renewable technologies. These reconfigurable spaces will improve occupant experience and comfort levels leading to extra-performance and improved productivity for the users.

The Master+ model offers either to masterpiece in the chosen discipline by choosing the Field Expert track or to strengthen the interdisciplinary skills in addition to the main discipline by choosing the Interdisciplinary Expert track providing a choice of a different competence to compliment the chosen discipline and achieve a competitive advantage in one’s career.

Students of these study programmes can choose between the path of Field Expert and Interdisciplinary Expert. Selection is made in the academic information system. Each path (competence) consists of three subjects (18 credits) allocated as follows: 1 year 1 semester (autumn) – first subject (6 credits), 1 year 2 semester (spring) – second subject (6 credits), 2 year 3 semester – third subject (6 credits). A student, who chooses a path of the Field Expert, deepens knowledge and strengthens skills in the main field of studies. The one, who chooses a path of the Interdisciplinary Expert, acquires knowledge and skills in a different area or field of studies. Competence provides a choice of alternative additional subjects.

Acquisition of the competence is certified by the issue of KTU certificate and entry in the appendix to the Master’s diploma. In addition, students can acquire an international certificate (details are provided next to each competence).

Competences are implemented by KTU lecturers – experts in their area – and high level business and public sector organizations; their employees deliver lectures, submit topics for the student’s theses, placement-oriented tasks for the projects, etc.

Career

Student’s competences:

– Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative principles of operating modes, organisation and management of energy systems;

– Analysis of new and sustainable principles of electricity generation, transmission and distribution technologies and assessment of the possibilities of their use;

– Identification and assessment of energy problems, provision of solutions;

– Design and management of energy systems, efficient use of renewable energy sources for generation, transmission and use of electricity and thermal energy.

Student’s skills:

– Able to plan and manage energy economy of distribution networks and companies, design and operate electricity and thermal energy supply systems and solve financial tasks;

– Able to make engineering decisions assessed in terms of ethics, social norms, environmental protection and safety;

– Able to manage various technological processes and technical systems of energy system.
