PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Galway’s identity is intertwined with the coast. The Discipline of Geography, with strong links with The Ryan Institute which identifies marine and coastal processes as a Priority Research Area, is delighted to offer a brand new structured postgraduate programme in NUIG. This programme is designed to train skilled personnel, who can advise on, organise and regulate an informed development of coastal and marine resources and activities in Ireland, the European Union and worldwide. Ireland’s coastal and marine environments are a vital natural resource. This value is reflected in a broad range of current EU directives and strategies aimed at taking full advantage of these resources while also enhancing our natural environments. The Irish Government has recently launched an integrated plan (Our Ocean Wealth), seeking to put into operation these EU policies for our coastal and marine resources. While rapid growth is expected as these new plans come into action, they are not without risks. A recent report by the Marine Institute outlined some challenges: a need to develop our environmental understanding; the challenge posed by climate change; protecting biodiversity; enhancing monitoring capability; greater integration of science, management and advice. The key to achieving the true sustainable development of our coastal and marine resources may be through new educational programmes. On the one hand, facilitating existing managers and planners through targeted learning in this expanding field, while on the other hand, training our current students to be the future decision-makers in these coastal and marine environments.

This is a highly opportune time for an MSc in Coastal and Marine Environments: physical processes, policy and practice. This MSc programme, theoretically informed and with a strong field-based and applied focus, is offered in direct response to newly emerging discourses on the long term health of coastal and marine environments. It seeks to challenge and facilitate students to engage with but go beyond established scientific conceptual and theoretical perspectives, engage new ways of understanding the complexities of our evolving physical coastal and marine environments, and develop critical insights that can support policy and practice in sustaining these increasingly vulnerable environments.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The MSc in Coastal and Marine Environments is a full-time postgraduate course delivered over 3 semesters (12 months). The programme was devised by a team of academics from the Discipline of Geography who have been involved in priority EU-funded and US National Science Foundation (NSF) research on contemporary and future challenges facing coastal and marine areas, including the ANCORIM (Atlantic Network for Coastal Risk Management) (INTERREG) and MARNET (Marine Atlantic Regions Network) (FP7) projects, as well as local and national-level projects on the same. The team is engaged in a broad range of scientific investigation of the physical environment, with an excellent international publication record. Students will become active members of ongoing research programmes and will learn the research and publication process.

There is a strong focus on the formulation of coastal and marine policies and strategies; the identity and role of stakeholders; the nature and impact of local, national and European governance; and the historic and contemporary approaches used to understand the physical processes that control the characteristics of our coast. Development of skills is supported by a significant focus on practical and field-based learning, including short field courses in Ireland and work placements.

It is directed at graduates from Geography, Natural Sciences and other related disciplines in the social and natural sciences, and at professionals in the field who are interested in furthering their knowledge of coastal and marine environments. Students will be required to conduct socially relevant research that addresses the roles of agencies and policy structures in coastal and marine environments.

CAREER OPPORTUNTIES

With coastal and marine resources increasingly promoted as being central to revitalising the Irish economy, the coming years will require well-informed and educated leaders who understand the complexities of the interaction between the economy and health of these environments. This, added to the broader national and European focus on the coastal zone and the urgent need for more Higher Education courses which recognise the renewed importance of sustainability of coastal and marine activities and the multifunctional facets of these areas, should present graduates of this course with opportunities across various fields ( coastal and marine science, environmental consultancy, local/regional/state management agencies, government and policy institute research, politics and governance of the environment, sustainable energy, research laboratories and programmes, teaching, heritage, tourism, etc.). The work placement programme will aid in professional development and offer links with potential employers, giving our students realistic and desirable career opportunities, and built-in work experience upon graduation.

PhD Entry: the MSc Programme can be used as a platform for potential doctoral PhD candidates for research programmes in Geography and our partners in NUIG, especially the Ryan Institute, and abroad. This will encourage the growth and visibility, at home and abroad, of the coastal and marine priority theme research clusters in NUIG.

This new Master's programme pioneers the development of a more diverse and creative approach to the reinterpretation and reuse of historical environments in cities around the world, such as through imaginative architectural designs and urban strategies, and including issues of cultural heritage.

Degree information

This programme is exceptional in linking the core research challenge of innovative design with in-depth processes of urban surveying, recording, mapping and analysis. As such, the programme has a strong international component, viewing cities around the world as fascinating laboratories for investigations of architectural and historic urban environments, with London being the prime example.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of five core modules (90 credits), one optional module (30 credits) and a dissertation/report (60 credits).

Dissertation/report
All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000-12,000 words or major design project with a minimum of 5,000 words.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, practical workshops, fieldwork visits, and individual and group tutorials. Assessment is through project critique reviews, project portfolios, coursework essays, individual and group presentations, dissertation/major project and a viva voce examination with an external examiner.

Fieldwork
An annual programme field trip (optional) takes place, normally in February. Departmental stipends of c. £250 are normally available. Maximum cost to the student is £500.

Careers

Graduates of this programme will contribute to the emerging design ideas and technologies that are already starting to change our understanding of contemporary building production in cities around the world, and which involve either reusing existing historic buildings or the insertion of completely new structures into older situations.

The MA aims to equip graduates with the advanced knowledge and skills required to operate across the areas of urban research, design, management and implementation, combining subject expertise with design creativity, and linking theory, history and practice.

Why Study Past Landscapes and Environments with us?

Landscapes are created, lived in and experienced. This course offers you an interdisciplinary approach to studying how people understood the world around them.

Taught modules will give you the chance to develop your research skills, and a practical introduction to the principal techniques and forms of evidence used to study past landscapes and environments. The Research Dissertation will provide you with the opportunity to conduct independent research on a subject of your choice.

You will explore the different theoretical and methodological approaches to the subject, taking a broad chronological and geographical view of past environments and landscapes.

What will I learn?

You will begin the first term by studying two 20-credit modules covering advanced research skills and key theoretical approaches, and a 20-credit module from a range of options. In the second term, you will choose from a selection of 20-credit modules, offering thematic and chronological breadth. The Research Essay option offers a chance for independent research on a subject of your choice. The degree culminates in an original Research Dissertation of 80 credits.

How will I be taught?

The principal methods of delivery include a mixture of:

- field visits.

The Research Dissertation is taught through regular supervisory meetings.

Each module runs for 2.5 hours per week across an eight-week period. You will also undertake 35 hours per week of guided independent study.

Our Sustainable Buildings and Environments MSc enables you to gain proficiency in designing sustainable buildings and built environments.

You will be set the challenge of designing to reduce the carbon footprint, without compromising the socio-cultural and economic significance of your architectural designs.

The course is designed for architects and is fully integrated with the Masters in Architecture (MArch) design studio. This sets it apart from other sustainable buildings courses in the UK.

Leading academics and practitioners in sustainable buildings design contribute to the course, demonstrating how sustainability thinking on a national and international level can inform projects. These include experts from: ARUPS; Hilson Moran; Fosters and Partners; Grimshaw Architects.

A European study tour to Berlin, to visit and study sustainable buildings, forms part of the course and a student software licence of IESVE simulation tool is required. Expenses for the trip and the student software licence are in addition to tuition fees and will cost approximately £600-£800.

On this course you'll design visitor experiences and events for museums, brand, urban and community environments and work in small multidisciplinary teams to tell stories through text, image, sound and physical space. You'll benefit from strong industry links that provide live, funded projects, mentors and placements.

Content

MA Narrative Environments is part of the Spatial Practices programme. The course combines storytelling with experience design, interaction design, museum studies, exhibition design, event design and communication design. You will develop and install interventions in cultural and corporate settings as well as making critical urban interventions in the public realm. You will undertake site and social research, visiting spaces, observing, filming and talking to visitors and inhabitants. You'll also produce proposals and make and test these in situ.

Distinct disciplines contribute to the postgraduate programme. Developing a new science centre, for example, draws on architects, curators, destination consultants, 3D designers, communication designers, interaction designers, time-based media designers, scenographers, writers, retailers and project managers. We value all.

Structure

MA Narrative Environments lasts 60 weeks structured as two consecutive periods of 30 weeks each (i.e. two academic years) in its 'extended full-time mode'.

MA Narrative Environments is credit rated at 180 credits, and comprises 2 units:

Unit 1 (60 credits) lasts 20 weeks.
Unit 2 (120 credits) runs for 10 weeks in the first year and 30 weeks in the second year.

Both units must be passed in order to achieve the MA, but the classification of the award of MA derives from your mark for Unit 2 only.

Delivery Model

Proximity to the RRU campus doesn’t have to be an issue. You can choose to do your program completely online or you can include a 2-week on-campus residency in your program. The majority of this program is experienced through online learning as both the fully online and blended programs come together in the third online course and continue online for the duration of the program. Using a combination of Web 2.0/3.0 technologies for learning, you will engage, collaborate, share, create and contribute to the learning experience from anywhere in the world. The courses are designed for flexibility of access while at the same time achieving a balance between individual work and teamwork. Regular contribution in the form of blog posts, discussions or other course activities is required.

Completion Options
The first six foundational courses are common to all students in the program. Then there are the following options for program completion.

Thesis Track
Students apply to the thesis track in their first year of the program. If the application is not successful they have the option of completing the program following the Research Paper or Digital Learning Consulting Project tracks. Students who are admitted to the 12-credit thesis track will identify a research area of focus and work 1:1 with a thesis supervisor on primary research. View recent student research titles.

Research Paper Track
Students taking this track will be engaged in additional course experiences including inquiry-based courses that require them to co-create their learning experience with the course instructor. They will then take an advanced research course in preparation for their 6-credit secondary research paper. Students who choose this track will engage in a deep investigation on a specific research question using secondary data. Previous secondary research papers have included meta-synthesis; critical literature reviews; policy analysis, etc.

Digital Learning Consulting Project
Students taking this track will be engaged in additional course experiences including inquiry-based courses that require them to co-create their learning experience with the course instructor. They will then take an advanced research course in preparation for their 6-credit digital learning consulting project. Students who choose this track will gain hands-on practical experience that will help them apply their theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting on tightly scoped project and provide the research informed justification and rationale for the design decisions made. Projects are sourced from a variety of program-industry stakeholder groups. Student proposed projects may also be considered.

River systems are under ever increasing pressure through the growing demands of water abstraction and hydroelectric power generation, and suffer recurrent disturbance through diffuse and point source pollutants, drought, flooding and channel modification.

The environmental management of rivers is required to mitigate the effects of these pressures. This requires a holistic understanding of how river systems are structured and function, and of how these systems have been altered by anthropogenic activities. To this end, the course will examine the interactions between climate, hydrology, geomorphology, ecology, biogeochemical cycling, water and habitat quality and biodiversity.

An important aspect of the training will be an understanding of how these interactions act at different spatial and temporal scales to influence the structure and function of ecosystems in running waters. This scientific and technical corpus will allow you to understand and quantify the consequences of natural and anthropogenic disturbance on river systems.

Using a combination of lectures, fieldwork, tutorials, laboratory classes, group projects and an individual research-based thesis, you will be provided with the necessary training and skills for a career in the successful environmental management of rivers, including techniques on assessing their status and approaches to rehabilitate and restore the condition of these globally threatened environments.

You will also gain training in legislation that drives the environmental management of rivers worldwide. In particular the EU Water Framework Directive provided an exceptionally strong driver in that all European member states were required draw up river basin management plans to achieve 'good ecological status' by 2015. This is certain to create many career opportunities in the future.

This degree will provide direct postgraduate training for students interested in this career direction, as well as providing advanced-level training suitable for further PhD studies in water science.

We are fortunate at Birmingham in having a wide variety of staff within the Water Sciences Research Group with interests in rivers, particularly in the arena of hydroecology, and it is this expertise that will inform the teaching of the modules in River Environments and their Management.

On this course, you will learn to identify and evaluate the processes, tools and outcomes of planning that lead to more sustainable places across the built environment.

You will learn how to critically assess planning theory and practice and respond to the growing demand for planning practitioners, strategists and consultants to address contemporary and future planning and development challenges within their environmental context.

This course will enable you to understand the development process and the wider linkages with other built environment professions as well as develop the skills required to assess, analyse and offer practical sustainable solutions to spatial planning problems.

This course seeks to shape you as a highly competent professional who can continue to develop not only yourself but also the broader sector.

Practice and research-informed learning, teaching and assessment strategies emphasise problem solving, team working and wider appreciation, with functional and procedural knowledge framed within this broader context.

The course will include problem-based enquiry and learning using the environment as an integrative setting, encourage the demonstration of key competencies within a professional, vocational context driven by engagement with practice and prepare you for a future in which the ability to think and change will be key skills.

Broadly speaking, the teaching strategy moves from staff-led during the early stages of the course to student-led towards the end. The early part of the course is intended to provide you with the basic knowledge and skills to understand how the spatial planning system operates and the need to embed the environmental services lens in processes in order to connect planning across different sectors, land uses and scales. This is achieved through staff-led lectures, seminars and workshops.

Later stages of the course are designed to develop your critical and reflective capabilities and make the links between the various spatial dimensions of planning, and between spatial and non-spatial policy intervention. The emphasis is on interactive learning, including student-led workshops, role-plays and simulations to achieve deeper learning and understanding.

We use visiting teachers, field study visits and research informed teaching to engage you with practice and topical issues. The sharing of appropriate modules across courses helps to enrich your educational experience, and expose you to the perspectives, values and attitudes of students from other disciplines.

The assessment strategy for each module reflects the learning outcomes. Modules that seek to test your ability to assimilate basic information and key concepts and reconstitute them without ready access to source material do so through written examinations. Modules that seek to test higher-order problem-solving skills do so through a variety of formative and assessed coursework methods including essays, evaluations, verbal presentations, posters, planning reports, design presentations, group work, role play scenarios or exams.

This programme is delivered in close collaboration with our advisory board of representatives from the water industry, and provides fundamental and applied training in the science and management of freshwater environments. Combining hydrology, geomorphology, biogeochemistry and ecology, the degree is designed to produce outstanding scientists capable of developing interdisciplinary environmental solutions to priority water resource and catchment issues. It involves fieldwork at our research sites including the near-natural Tagliamento River, Italy, and heavily impacted rivers within London and the south-east of England.

This programme:

To be eligible to apply for direct admission to a PhD, students must have obtained at least a GPA 6.0 (Distinction) for the Graduate Diploma of Research Methods.
