The MSc in Environmental Technology has been running for over 40 years and provides the highest standard of knowledge and skills development for environmental and sustainability specialists. Through the course students acquire a diverse range of discipline-specific problem-solving skills for tackling contemporary sustainability issues. A major emphasis of the course is on the way that environments function and on the compatible tools, alternative technologies and policies for sustainable environmental management.

Our course combines the natural and social sciences, engineering and business in a truly interdisciplinary manner, providing a foundation for graduates to demonstrate their ability to identify and resolve environmental and sustainability issues in a holistic way. This broad training is followed by an in-depth education in many specialised areas, maintaining the course's interdisciplinary nature. The specialist options in the second term are designed to cater for a variety of individual interests and career requirements. 

The course provides students with different options to build on their undergraduate degree, by allowing them to specialise in an area of particular interest, convert undergraduate knowledge to a different setting, differentiate for the job market and learn specific techniques and tools for research and management.

MSc candidates learn to appreciate that successful projects depend, at least in part, on belonging to a network of experts aiming to advance personal and collective environmental goals. We emphasise a friendly and supportive learning environment.

Building on Imperial’s environmental world-class research portfolio, dedicated teaching staff coordinate the interdisciplinary nature of our course and very strong links with industry, business and regulators. Course Structure

First term – Core Course

The Core Course emphasises contemporary policy debates through a number of cross-cutting themes: climate change and energy, international development, sustainability and health, and biodiversity. This is delivered through the following modules:

Second term – specialist Options

Student elect to specialise in one of nine Options in the second term. A strong case study approach is employed with emphasis on working in teams, decision-making, strong analytical skills and report writing and delivery. The nine specialist options currently offered on the course include:

Third Term – Individual Research Project

The research project term, running from April to September, aims to provide graduates with valuable research and practical experience and give them the ability to address individual sustainability and environmental problems with confidence. It provides the opportunity to undertake rigorous independent research; to apply knowledge and understanding of sustainability and environmental disciplines to practical problems; and to develop and demonstrate interdisciplinary, transferable skills with specific emphasis on project management and oral and written presentation skills. 

The research project normally follows from the specialist Option and may involve any combination of desk-, laboratory- or fieldwork. It may be set up and carried out in conjunction with an outside organisation thereby providing practical experience which greatly enhances employment prospects, and may be carried out in the UK or abroad.

The programme aims to: 

• Provide the highest standard of training for environmental scientists and managers, who will become leaders in their fields, whether in academia, consultancy, research, government bodies, non-governmental organisations or industry and commerce, both nationally and internationally

• Deliver an holistic understanding of the interdisciplinary complexities underlying environmental issues integrating science, technology, law, economics, policy and management, with in-depth education in the more specific areas addressed by the eight specialist options

The EEP option is designed for students from all backgrounds with an interest in environmental economics and public policy.

It provides students with an ability to employ economic reasoning and an understanding of the importance of institutions and policy processes to the analysis of a broad range of national and international policy issues such as biodiversity protection, climate change, poverty/environment linkages and the management of renewable resources; an awareness of the institutional and policy context in which environmental economic solutions might be applied; working knowledge of a wide range of economic tools and project and policy evaluation methods; and a sound but critical understanding of environmental economics as a discipline including knowledge of the different paradigms of analysis in the field.

Aims

Environmental economics is now an indispensable part of the education of anyone dealing with environmental issues. As one of the fastest growing areas of research and study, its influence over environmental policymaking and practice is already widely recognised. For example, it has become commonplace to speak about green taxes, carbon trading mechanisms, environmental valuation and incentive design for sustainable development.

What are the underlying causes of tropical deforestation? How rapidly should we take action to deal with global warming? What is the most efficient way to tackle air pollution? Are consumers willing to pay more for cleaner fuels and technologies? These are some of the questions which environmental economics attempts to address, pointing to the need to link individual choices and patterns of behaviour to the underlying structure of the economy and its institutions. A central insight is that environmental degradation, far from being an incidental consequence of economic activity, is in many ways a central feature of the way production and consumption is currently organised. Economists are uniquely well placed to comment on, and offer analysis of, these linkages. At the same time, economists argue that solutions require systematic changes to the economic incentives which drive human behaviour in these domains, bringing about the shifts in production and consumption that are necessary for sustainable development.

The demand for individuals with a good grounding in environmental economics continues to grow. There are promising career opportunities in government, industry, consultancy and research for people able to apply economic ideas, concepts and methodologies to environmental problem-solving and policymaking. In drawing up this new Option, we have been concerned to offer a course which will educate and inspire individuals interested in a career in these fields. It aims to provide a broad but integrated survey of environmental economics as a field of study and assist students in developing an ability to think about and analyse environmental problems in economically-literate terms. By the conclusion of the course, students will have a sound understanding of the economic and institutional context for environmental policymaking and will be able to apply economic concepts to understanding, and prescribing solutions for, a wide range of environmental problems

Content

The Option has been designed for students from all backgrounds with an interest in environmental economics and its applications. In terms of structure, it is divided into eleven thematic modules covering basic theory, tools and a range of applications:

Concepts: Initial lectures and small group sessions focus on the microeconomic foundations of environmental economics, looking at market processes and market failure, the theory of externalities and the concepts of public goods and open property resources.

Tools: The Option then goes on to examine the use of a range of economic tools and introduces students to some key techniques for data analysis. Topics covered in these modules include the design and implementation of market-based instruments, project appraisal and environmental valuation and the use of sustainable development indicators and green accounting. Students also receive training in quantitative and qualitative data analysis and in international environmental law.

Applications: The final set of teaching modules applies these economic concepts and tools to a series of environmental case studies in the fields of:

  • global environmental change (including climate change, biodiversity conservation, biosecurity and transboundary air pollution)
  • renewable resource management (such as managing fisheries and other living populations, renewable energy technologies and markets, and the role of innovation)
  • agriculture (focusing on the environmental impact of agriculture, agri-environmental policy and the effect of trade liberalisation)
  • development (covering issues of poverty and environment, tropical deforestation, human health and environment, GM and biotechnology, and the role of technical progress)

An essential feature of the Option, complementing, integrating and applying this lecture material, is small group project work. This is designed to develop a wide range of technical and analytical skills (project evaluation, data analysis, environmental valuation) and also organisational and communication skills (technical writing, oral presentations, team work). Finally, there is a series of specialist talks and seminars running through the term, in which invited speakers working in policymaking, industry and research give presentations on environmental economic and policy issues in the news.

There are excellent career opportunities for graduates who can combine training in environmental economics, good policy knowledge, proficiency in quantitative and qualitative methods and an ability to develop applications. Graduates from this Option are likely to find employment across a wide field, including environmental consultancy, advisory positions in commercial business and industry and careers as expert advisors in government, international institutions and environmental NGOs.

The Master of Environmental Studies program provides you with the knowledge base you need to understand complex environmental issues — and allows you the flexibility to develop unique expertise and professional experience in the field of your choice. At the beginning of your studies, you will be assigned an academic advisor to help you through the course selection process. The Proseminar: Contemporary Issues in Environmental Studies (1 c.u.)

This course reviews the key sciences fundamental to an interdisciplinary study of the environment: biology, geology, chemistry and physics. It takes a systems approach to the environment with a look at the atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere and the intersection of humans with each. This required course also acquaints students with issues, debates and current opinions in the study of the environment. Different styles of writing, from white papers to blogs, will be assigned throughout the semester.

Research Methods course (1 c.u.)
Designing research is a key building block of the Master of Environmental Studies program. The research methods course prepares students to ask, and confidently answer, the innovative questions they will pose in their capstone projects. The requirement can be fulfilled by taking a methodology course that provides students with the data gathering and analysis skills they’ll use to begin their research projects.

Foundation courses (4 c.u.)
At both the local and international scale, issues such as climate change, diminishing natural resources, water access, energy security, low-level toxins and habitat destruction all require not only the best science available, but the ability to integrate this knowledge to make decisions even when considerable uncertainties exist.

Environmental challenges are complex, and their solutions never come from just one sector of society. We believe that in order to become a leading problem-solver in the environmental arena, you need to be able to draw connections between many disciplines.

Foundation courses help broaden your knowledge in areas outside of your chosen concentration, and complement your chosen field. For example, if you are studying sustainability, your foundation course credits are an opportunity to learn about environmental law and policy, or become versed in business, which will be necessary while working in the sustainability sector. Foundation courses allow you to speak the language of many different sectors, and offer the opportunity to discover unexpected synergies and resonances in fields beyond your own. Concentration courses may be taken in any of the 12 graduate Schools at the University (School of Engineering and Applied Science, Graduate School of Education, School of Design, School of Social Policy & Practice, The Wharton School of Business, Penn Law, etc.). Your advisor will help you select courses that best fit your goals and skills gaps.

If your professional aspirations are not reflected in one of the above concentrations, you can develop an Individualized concentration in conjunction with your faculty advisor and with the approval of the Faculty Advisory Committee.

Capstone project (1 c.u.)

The capstone project is a distinguishing feature of the Master of Environmental Studies program, blending academic and professional experiences and serving as the culmination of your work in the program. You will design a project drawing from your learning in and outside the classroom to demonstrate mastery of your concentration area.

During your first year, your academic advisor will help you choose a topic for your capstone project. Once you’ve done so, you’ll seek out two readers for your capstone. These can be faculty members or professionals in a relevant field. The readers serve as advisors and mentors, and our students frequently find their first jobs after graduation as a result of the connections they make during the capstone process.

The capstone projects themselves vary widely, from research papers to videos, business plans, photojournals and websites. However, all projects demonstrate students’ ability to:

Define a research question
Design a protocol to address this question
Acquire the data necessary to clarify, if not resolve, the question
Critically assess the quality of the data acquired
Draw defensible conclusions from those data
Communicate this process and conclusions to professional colleagues with clarity and precision
Time frame

Master of Environmental Studies students may enroll on either a part-time or full-time basis. Your time to graduation will vary depending on how many classes you take each semester and whether you take summer classes. Full-time students can complete the program in two years, taking three or four classes per semester. Part-time students typically complete their work in four years, taking one or two classes per semester. Individuals working full time are advised to take no more than two courses per term.

Transferring graduate credits

Incoming students may petition to transfer up to two graduate-level credits from classes completed prior to their admission at Penn. Students seeking transfer credit should fill out a form after they matriculate into the program, along with an official transcript, to the Program Director before the end of their first semester at Penn. A transfer credit form is available on the program’s Blackboard site, which is accessible to current students only. Transfer credit is evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the faculty advisory committee.

*Academic credit is defined by the University of Pennsylvania as a course unit (c.u.). Generally, a 1 c.u. course at Penn is equivalent to a three or four semester hour course elsewhere. In general, the average course offered at Penn is listed as being worth 1 c.u.; courses that include a lecture and a lab are often worth 1.5 c.u.

We aim to give you an understanding of issues and approaches to the representations of peoples, other species, habitats, places, cultures and environments in various kinds of writing. You’ll graduate with the ability to apply what you’ve learnt to your own professional practice.

You’ll study:

• A mix of thematic topics represented by a variety of writers.
• A balance between historical and contemporary writing.
• Issues raised by eco-tourism, conservation and environmentalism.
• Issues related to the experience and representation of people, wildlife and places in specific locations in the UK and elsewhere.
• The genres, and context of contemporary and historical travel and nature writing, and the history of our connections with the environment and the natural world.

MODULES

Writing in the Field is a broad introduction to the skills and techniques required to write from personal experience.whether about people, landscapes, the natural world, or a combination of all three. By using fieldcraft techniques, based on looking, listening, feeling and thinking, we explore ways of writing about the world around us.

Context, History and Genres in Travel and Nature Writing gives an overview, both broad and focused, on the key developments in the travel writing and nature writing genres over time; including analysis of historical trends, specific authors and works, the history and development of both ‘travel’ and ‘nature’ as social pastimes, and the contemporary scene.

In Advanced Travel and Nature Writing, you'll develop new ways of writing about the world: pushing the boundaries of your writing style and content in order to learn what works best for you as a writer.

Professional Skills in Travel and Nature Writing is a practical guide to getting your work published across a range of different media and outlets, including newspapers, magazines, websites, blogs, books and on TV and radio. Featuring advice from senior practitioners, editors and publishers. You’ll also learn to plan a trip requiring commissions, and do a pitch and interview of an idea for publication.

In A Portfolio of Travel and Nature Writing, you'll develop a 20,000 words portfolio of your best work, together with a reflective diary of your progress throughout the year.

TEACHING METHODS

A large part of the course is taught on three residential courses. You’ll undergo an intensive few days of creative writing, discussion, meetings with practitioners and commissioners and firsthand experience in the field. Please note that you’ll have to pay for travel, food and accommodation on the residential courses.

You’ll also learn online. You’ll have internet-based seminars and group discussions on Google Hangouts. You’ll also post your work on our Virtual Learning Environment, where your peers and tutors can critique it in detail.

ASSESSMENT

Who It’s For

The Master’s Degree in Environmental Practice is designed for those seeking a program that is professionally-focused and which has a content related to professional certification. The program is primarily designed for:
-Environmental practitioners heading towards professional certification or who are already professional certified as EP’s, but who may require updating to retain their active certification and/or career development
-Professionals aiming at a managerial level position and seeking advanced degrees
-International university graduates from environmental programs with relevant work experience
-Graduates from other CCEE programs
-College graduates who complete the degree completion option through CCEE
-University graduates who graduate from the CCEE Certificate program

Delivery Model

The Master of Arts/Master of Science in Environmental Practice program consists of 30 credits which, in most cases, will equate to 10 courses. The program is designed to be completed within three years. Each course is delivered entirely online through innovative use of web-based technologies. Participants will draw upon web resources as well as more traditional print media.

Designed for the working professional, the program content reflects the defined needs of the environmental profession and is closely related to supporting the National Occupational Standards established for professional certification as environmental practitioners in Canada.

A 15 credit core of courses is to be taken from an approved list of Royal Roads University courses. This requirement includes the option of either completing a Research Paper on a topic of specific interest to the student or a Practicum which enables the student to apply knowledge gained in the program to a specific, approved topic of relevance to their workplace or agency they may be associated with.

Students will enrol initially in one course (Developing a Sustainability Perspective) but may subsequently increase this load. Courses normally last for a period of 10 to12 weeks, each course requiring an average time commitment of 10 to 20 hours per week. Having completed six or nine credits from the program core students will then proceed to courses in their optional concentration. The choice of elective courses will be determined by the students’ registration in either the MA or MSc programs. Courses in their concentration may be from Royal Roads University or from University College, the University of Denver. Having completed at least 20 credits, which will include the Research Methods course, students may embark upon either their Research Paper or the Practicum.

Graduates of the MA/MSc in Environmental Practice will be able to:
-Relate their knowledge to environmental issues in their work environment
-Assess the environmental and socio-economic elements of sustaining a healthy environment and societal well-being as an environmental practitioner
-Develop and evaluate goals, objectives and strategies, taking a range of perspectives into consideration

-Make decisions that require a broad understanding of environmental knowledge, policy and regulation, and leadership skills
-Solve problems effectively in differing workplace situations
-Act as a leader who can meet the fundamental challenges of addressing complex environmental issues

-Possess a broad environmental vision and a sound understanding of how environmental issues are addressed under different jurisdictions and the dynamics of both public and private sectors

Flexible Admission

Applicants who do not meet the Standard Admission requirements will be considered for Flexible Admission and assessed as follows:
-Normally, six years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
-All flexible admission applicants will normally be required to take "Academic Writing and Critical Thinking" and obtain a minimum final grade of B (73%).

MSc Environmental Monitoring, Modelling and Reconstruction focuses on analysing past, present, and future dynamic environments, providing you with the skills for a career in environmental management or consultancy, and a firm grounding for research in the environmental sciences. 

Concerns over the human impact on the environment have stimulated demand from governments and industry for the monitoring, analysis and modelling of natural processes in environmental systems. This is essential if we are to improve understanding of the interrelation of environmental variables in order to predict and manage their responses to anthropogenic perturbations.

Studying this course, you will gain:

  • advanced theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in order to collect, interpret and analyse contemporary and past environmental data.
  • modelling skills, in order to investigate the interrelationships between environmental variables, and to predict their responses to changing internal and external conditions.

We also use the proximity of Manchester to the upland areas of the Peak District; several past MSc students completed dissertation work in close collaboration with various organisations responsible for land management in the Peak District, giving their work direct policy relevance.

Aims

Teaching focuses on training in theory, concepts and research skills in the first semester, and practical applications and research experience in the second semester.

We teach course units in small-group interactive styles with a mix of lectures, tutorials, seminars, practicals and presentations. A range of physical geographers provide training in their specialised fields, covering both content and practical research methods.

In a typical week, expect to spend some time in the library, preparing for seminars; in the laboratory, completing practicals; in the dedicated postgraduate computer laboratory, or writing reports; and in the classroom.

The second semester in particular gives you increased opportunities to go out into the field, both for practicals and to gain research experience by doing field research with members of staff. We maintain an intensively monitored catchment on the moors near the Snake Pass in the Peak District and this is the focus of several practical exercises, as well as a source of data to support dissertation work.

Field and laboratory research are essential to your learning process in environmental monitoring, and these form integrated parts of both the taught units and dissertation work.

Teaching and learning

  • Part-time Study

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 27 months.  There are NO evening or weekend course units available on the part-time programme, therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director and seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.

Coursework and assessment

Taught units comprise two-thirds of the course and are assessed by a wide range of project work, essays and presentations. There are no formal examinations. The remainder of your course consists of the dissertation.

  • Field/laboratory monitoring techniques for analysis of environmental processes
  • Advanced techniques for analysis of environmental materials field and laboratory techniques for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction based on stratigraphical studies of sediment cores, including microfossil and pollen analysis
  • GIS and remote sensing and advanced statistical methods
  • Designing, planning, funding and executing research projects in environmental monitoring, modelling or palaeoenvironmental reconstruction
  • Processing/analysing results logically, using objective statistical methods and/or mathematical modelling techniques objective, unbiased, and impartial reporting of analytical results and their interpretation, both oral and written, particularly scientific report writing. Normally taken full-time, the course is also well suited to part-time study over two years.

Delivery Method

Combining the best of short residencies and innovative web-based instruction, the MA in Environmental Education and Communication program allows both busy working professionals and those just beginning their careers to get the most out of their academic experience. This combination of learning experiences allows students to benefit from the intensity of the program while still being able to meet the demands of family and workplace.

Participants in the MA program take 11 courses (41 credits) including the thesis course. Six courses are taken on-campus, and five are delivered at a distance through Internet-based technologies.

Certificate students take the first three courses in the schedule for a total of 9 credits. Diploma students take the first nine courses for a total of 24 credits.

We will utilize a range of educational methodologies, including case studies, field studies, cultural studies, team projects, lectures and seminar discussions, and online modules. RRU has become a leader in the delivery of web-based interactive distance education courses, and these will be of great value during non-residential periods.

Residency
Over two years, MA students attend two separate three-week residencies and one final two-week residency. The first residency introduces the cohort of students to each other, the faculty, and the RRU style of education as they participate in their first two courses. The middle residency incorporates two courses, may have a more directed field-based orientation, and helps prepare students for their thesis research. The final residency allows completing students to present their thesis findings to the larger environmental education and RRU community and incorporates their final courses, preparing them to be leaders in the field.

Students should expect to be fully occupied during the residency period. The regular classroom schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with homework, readings, and team meetings done outside of these hours. There are activities during the regular workday and in the evenings. In addition to educational activities, there are a number of planned field trips and recreational events.

Online Courses
Online courses are delivered through the innovative use of internet technologies. Students draw on a range of learning resources, while using online discussion groups and drop boxes to develop and complete the electronic submission of both individual and team assignments.

Students take one nine-week distance course at a time. Each distance course requires an average time commitment of 10 - 20 hours per week.

Program Laddering
The structure of the program is laddered so that individuals are able to complete a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, or full Master's degree.

-The Graduate Certificate program was designed to be taken on its own, or to ladder into the Diploma or Master of Arts in Environmental Education and Communication. The Certificate would be awarded upon successful completion of a residency and one distance-based semester (approximately five months). Students may apply for transfer to the Diploma or MA stream during the Graduate Certificate program, or apply to the Diploma or MA program once they have completed the Certificate

In the summer semester, you work independently to undertake dissertation work based on primary and/or secondary data, or else a more philosophical/theoretical dissertation. Delivery Model

Combining the best of short residencies and innovative web-based instruction, the MA in Environmental Education and Communication program allows both busy working professionals and those just beginning their careers to get the most out of their academic experience. This combination of learning experiences allows students to benefit from the intensity of the program while still being able to meet the demands of family and workplace.

Participants in the MA program take 11 courses (41 credits) including the thesis course. Six courses are taken on-campus, and five are delivered at a distance through Internet-based technologies.

Certificate students take the first three courses in the schedule for a total of 9 credits. Diploma students take the first nine courses for a total of 24 credits.

We will utilize a range of educational methodologies, including case studies, field studies, cultural studies, team projects, lectures and seminar discussions, and online modules. RRU has become a leader in the delivery of web-based interactive distance education courses, and these will be of great value during non-residential periods.

The Msc in Environmental Management is a broad-based, flexible course that prepares you for a range of environmental careers, from environmental specialist to a manager with an environmental remit.

Unusually, and possible uniquely, for an Environmental Management Masters you have the option to include Business and Management modules in your programme. In addition, through selecting particular modules and assessment options, the course can be tailored to suit your specialist interests and career aspirations. For example, this course will suit someone wishing to pursue a career in ecological consultancy, or a career in pollution control or environmental hazards and liabilities.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

You’ll review how environmental systems work and how human behaviour impacts on them. From this, you’ll explore contemporary environmental management principles, tools, and legislation that we can use to address such impacts. Through reviewing case studies and current practice you’ll develop your knowledge of Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Management Systems, sustainability concepts such as the circular economy, plus resource management, environmental hazards and ecosystem services.

You’ll develop key skills needed by professional environmental managers working in the field, including:

• Data management and analysis

• Behaviour change

MODULES

In the first two trimesters, we provide you with core knowledge and skills to work as an environmental professional, in particular environmental systems and management tools, instigating and managing change, data handling and reporting. You’ll study relevant and up-to-date material, benefiting from specialist inputs by speakers active in the environmental industry.

Optional modules give you the opportunity to develop a greater depth of knowledge in several of these components, for example energy and wastes management, ecosystem services and sustainability principles.

The third Trimester is devoted to your independent research project where you’ll work with your supervisor or a topic of particular interest to you. This might be a project working with an industry partner and will allow you to demonstrate your environmental understanding in an area relevant to your interests and career; from biodiversity to business.

The demand for trained practitioners in environmental assessment at both the project level (environmental impact assessment (EIA)) and the strategic level (strategic environmental assessment (SEA)), and related environmental management fields continues to grow. To meet this demand, the MSc programme in Environmental Impact Assessment and Management provides an opportunity for specialist study in this area. It will provide you with a thorough, stimulating and practical post-graduate education in EIA and related areas.

You will gain:

  • An integrated course of studies to equip you to undertake the planning and management tasks associated with the principal stages of environmental assessment.

Aims

The course aims to provide you with an understanding of theories and techniques in environmental assessment and management, in parallel with developing skills in analytical decision-making, design and project management.

The course consists of six core course units, plus one optional course unit which can be chosen from a selection of modules taught within the School of Environment, Education and Development or other related schools across the University. You also undertake a dissertation in an area of your choice to develop your analytical and research skills; engagement with case studies and practice are encouraged as part of data collection.

Teaching and learning

Part-time Study 

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 27 months.  The part-time route is not on a day-release basis and there are no evening or weekend course units available. Therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director first and check the timetable to ensure that you can attend the compulsory classes. You should also seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.

Coursework and assessment

We assess you through the submission of essays, reports and other work (e.g. workshop assignments), both individually and in groups. Some optional course units may involve examinations.

The taught part of the course (120 credits), is assessed by continuous assessment and formal examinations. Continuous assessment includes essays, reports, posters, oral presentations, and a major project.

A 15,000-word dissertation is prepared on an approved topic, which is discussed and chosen at the beginning of the second semester and a suitable supervisor allocated. Initial work focuses upon an overview of he chosen topic, a literature review and the design of the methodology to be adopted. During the latter part of Semester 2 and the summer vacation, you undertake the necessary research and analysis, culminating in the writing of your dissertation.

Career opportunities

Graduates of this specialist course are fully equipped to seek employment in environmental consultancies, local authorities, utilities, environmental agencies and environmental non-governmental organisations in both the developed and developing world. We encourage you to interact with potential employers during the course, particularly when undertaking the dissertation.

The MSc EIAM is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) under their Environment Specialism. It is also accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) as a specialist Masters degree and can therefore lead to full RTPI accreditation for students with an undergraduate degree in town planning that is partially recognised by the RTPI.

The course develops understanding of environmental processes and applies this to both the legal framework and management decision-making activities. The course seeks to raise your ability to understand and analyse environmental problems at Master's level, in order to develop solutions.

You will be presented with the tools needed for environmental management, including project management, life cycle analysis, accounting and reporting, environmental reviews and audits. The course includes the processes and legislative approaches related to the reduction of emissions to air, land and water, and the effects of pollution together with the legislative framework in which they are set.

Accreditation

The MSc in Environmental Science: Legislation and Management is accredited by the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM). This entitles students to free student membership of the IES and CIWEM.

For our September intake we have 2 specific scholarship schemes available: the Queen's Anniversary Prize Scholarships provide 6 x £3000 fee waiver scholarships to our best applicants (no additional application is required for these); and the £4000 Water Conservators Bursary is awarded to one student who writes the essay on water and the environment (some years we split the scholarship between 2 exceptional applicants). This MSc course can be taken in part-time (from 1 day a week for 2 years) or full-time (from 2 days a week for 1 years) mode. Students can start in September or January.

The master’s degree in Environmental Practice is available as a Master of Science (MSc) in Environmental Practice and as a Master of Arts (MA) in Environmental Practice.

This program is one of a suite of programs offered through the Canadian Centre for Environmental Education (CCEE) which is a result of a partnership between Royal Roads University and the Environmental Careers Organization of Canada (ECO Canada).

A unique opportunity for cross-border awareness and for a broader perspective is provided by access to courses offered by the University College, University of Denver, in their Master's degree program in Environmental Policy and Management.

The Master’s Degree in Environmental Practice is designed for those seeking a program that is professionally-focused and which has a content related to professional certification. The program is primarily designed for:

Delivery Model

The Master of Arts/Master of Science in Environmental Practice program consists of 30 credits which, in most cases, will equate to 10 courses. The program is designed to be completed within three years. Each course is delivered entirely online through innovative use of web-based technologies. Participants will draw upon web resources as well as more traditional print media.

Designed for the working professional, the program content reflects the defined needs of the environmental profession and is closely related to supporting the National Occupational Standards established for professional certification as environmental practitioners in Canada.

A 15 credit core of courses is to be taken from an approved list of Royal Roads University courses. This requirement includes the option of either completing a Research Paper on a topic of specific interest to the student or a Practicum which enables the student to apply knowledge gained in the program to a specific, approved topic of relevance to their workplace or agency they may be associated with.

Students will enrol initially in one course (Developing a Sustainability Perspective) but may subsequently increase this load. Courses normally last for a period of 10 to 12 weeks, each course requiring an average time commitment of 10 to 20 hours per week. Having completed six or nine credits from the program core students will then proceed to courses in their optional concentration. The choice of elective courses will be determined by the students’ registration in either the MA or MSc programs. Courses in their concentration may be from Royal Roads University or from University College, the University of Denver. Having completed at least 20 credits, which will include the Research Methods course, students may embark upon either their Research Paper or the Practicum.

Flexible Admission

Applicants who do not meet the Standard Admission requirements will be considered for Flexible Admission and assessed as follows:
-Normally, six years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
-All flexible admission applicants will normally be required to take "Academic Writing and Critical Thinking" and obtain a minimum final grade of B (73%).
