About the Program

In order to cover the need for environmental specialists, the program "Master of Science in Environmental Sciences" at the University of Koblenz-Landau (Landau Campus) provides a research-oriented, unique blend in the core disciplines of natural sciences (including environmental chemistry, landscape and applied ecology) complemented by selected aspects of social sciences such as environmental economics. You can acquire advanced methodical skills, a profound understanding of environmental problems across different scales from molecules to landscapes, and the capacity to develop solutions for these complex, interdisciplinary problems. The job-related training in soft skills (e.g. oral and written presentation) and the experience in interdisciplinary teamwork will enable you to efficiently communicate findings and solutions to scientists and the public.

Program Structure

All students take the six required modules (Compulsory part). Afterwards, students personalize the program by choosing two of the eight Specialty Areas and completing four modules in each, with an additional module of their choice. An external internship and the Master Thesis with colloquium round out the 4-semester program. The 6-week internship can be performed at an external university or governmental or industrial research institute in Germany or abroad.

Joint degree

The Msc programme in Enviromental Sciences offers the possibility of getting a Joint Master's Degree in Sustainable Development (http://www.unive.it/nqcontent.cfm?a_id=75952).
The programme offers an interdisciplinary approach, combining the specialisation in teaching and research of 6 partner universities: Graz (Austria), Ca' Foscari Venice, Leipzig (Germany), Utrecht (the Netherlands), Basel (Switzerland), and Hiroshima (Japan).
Admission to the programme is open to students holding the equivalent of an undergraduate/first cycle degree programme (Italian Laurea triennale), who will be selected on the basis of their research skills, basic knowledge of natural and/or social sciences, and a general insight in the subject of sustainable development and intervention strategies.

The study plans

The programme unfolds into three semesters of full-time lectures and lab experience. The last semester is dedicated to the development of individual projects and of the thesis, supervised by a department member. Each study plan is organized around a set of core courses, two elected activities and a final examination, in which the candidates will defend the thesis.

Students can choose among three study plans:

Global Environmental Change [English-taught Programme], which provides a thorough understanding of Earth System dynamics, taking a holistic and systemic approach, which also include the social and economic systems. Several disciplines are covered, including: climatology, past and recent climate history, tools for predicting changes in climate, analysis and forecasting of the impacts of climate change on the environment, society and human welfare, adaptation and mitigation strategies, integrated assessment of global change drivers.

Environmental Control and Reclamation [IT] which provides advanced knowledge and skills related to the analysis of the processes that contribute to the de-contamination and environmental qualification; technologies currently in use for the treatment of solid, liquid and gaseous fuels and their energy conversion; methodologies for environmental monitoring; productive activities and sustainable rehabilitation of the environment.

Assessment and Management of Environmental Systems [IT], which provides in-depth knowledge intended application and development of methodologies for the management of environmental data; the assessment and management of natural resources; the resource assessment of natural ecosystems; rehabilitation and environmental restoration of ecosystems modified by man; planning and land management, landscape and marine and coastal ecosystems; the assessment and management of environmental sustainability.

Applying to the programme

In order to enter the programme, applicants need to have an equivalent of a three-year Italian undergraduate degree (laurea) such as a BSc degree in Environmental Sciences or related subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, ecc.) with good background on fundamental topics in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Data Sciences.

The taught M.Sc. degree in Environmental Sciences, as the first of its kind in Ireland, has an established pedigree, attracting students with diverse academic backgrounds from Ireland and abroad. This full-time, intensive course is intended for administrative and scientific workers and new graduates with an appropriate biological/earth science background. It comprises a series of taught modules encompassing a variety of current environmental themes, followed by a five-month, research project. There is also the possibility to opt for a diploma course in Environmental Sciences, consisting of the taught modules only.

The course provides students with a wide range of knowledge and skills relating to the expanding subject of Environmental Science. It aims to provide a firm scientific understanding of current environmental issues that will be of relevance to those interested in environmental management and related areas. The course provides a foundation of understanding of current environmental policies and legislation, and builds upon this with practical and theoretical courses that include subjects such as ocean and coastal management, water resources and pollution, climate change and environmental impact assessment. Theory and practice are closely linked to develop field, analytical, and presentation skills, including dedicated modules relating to data analysis and Geographic Information Systems. Following successful completion of the taught part of the course, students embark on a closely supervised research project intended to expand the skills and knowledge base acquired in earlier modules. Previous research projects have covered a diverse range of subjects including: groundwater contamination; atmospheric heavy metal deposition; environmental education; sewage processing systems; bio-indicators of marine pollution; and the impacts of erosion in African lakes.

Previous graduates of this M.Sc. course have been employed by a range of agencies involved in environmental protection, as environmental consultants and in local government. Many graduates have gone on to do further research in a range of environmentally related disciplines. Graduates from the course have pursued their interests in environmental sciences throughout the world.

Through the course students acquire a diverse range of discipline-specific problem-solving skills for tackling contemporary sustainability issues. A major emphasis of the course is on the way that environments function and on the compatible tools, alternative technologies and policies for sustainable environmental management.

Course Structure

First term – Core Course

The Core Course emphasises contemporary policy debates through a number of cross-cutting themes: climate change and energy, international development, sustainability and health, and biodiversity. This is delivered through the following modules:

Second term – specialist Options

Student elect to specialise in one of nine Options in the second term. A strong case study approach is employed with emphasis on working in teams, decision-making, strong analytical skills and report writing and delivery. The nine specialist options currently offered on the course include:

Third Term – Individual Research Project

The research project term, running from April to September, aims to provide graduates with valuable research and practical experience and give them the ability to address individual sustainability and environmental problems with confidence. It provides the opportunity to undertake rigorous independent research; to apply knowledge and understanding of sustainability and environmental disciplines to practical problems; and to develop and demonstrate interdisciplinary, transferable skills with specific emphasis on project management and oral and written presentation skills. 

The research project normally follows from the specialist Option and may involve any combination of desk-, laboratory- or fieldwork. It may be set up and carried out in conjunction with an outside organisation thereby providing practical experience which greatly enhances employment prospects, and may be carried out in the UK or abroad.

Learning Approach

The programme aims to: 

• Provide the highest standard of training for environmental scientists and managers, who will become leaders in their fields, whether in academia, consultancy, research, government bodies, non-governmental organisations or industry and commerce, both nationally and internationally

• Deliver an holistic understanding of the interdisciplinary complexities underlying environmental issues integrating science, technology, law, economics, policy and management, with in-depth education in the more specific areas addressed by the eight specialist options

This programme is focused on developing high level student understanding of the physical environment, and how society interacts with it. Considerable flexibility exists affording applicants the opportunity to develop their own postgraduate degree programme; the degree benefits from the development of the School of Environmental Sciences drawing on modules from across the School.

Emphasis is placed on techniques for examining recent environmental change, methods of contemporary monitoring and providing the context for possible future climate change impacts in a range of environments.

The programme has a strong practical component within which there is specialist training in a wide variety of field and laboratory techniques.

A variety of assessment approaches are used including, oral and poster presentations, reports, essays and field notebooks. Teaching is provided in a range of environments and formats, including field, seminars, lectures, small group and laboratory.

For a Diploma, students will complete and be assessed on eight months of work. For the MSc, an additional four months will be spent preparing and submitting a dissertation based either on a research project or a placement with an appropriate institution.

The School of Life Sciences conducts high quality research in the areas of Pharmacology; biotechnology and molecular biology; geography and environmental sciences; and applied and health aspects of sports science. The School has a large number of postgraduate students undertaking full-time research in these disciplines leading to the awards of MSc by Research, MPhil or PhD. There are also a number of industry-based graduates registered for research degrees on a full-time or part-time basis. The Master of Environmental Sciences (MEnvSci) is a 180 point interdisciplinary degree that draws on a wide range of papers across the Biological, Chemical, Earth and Engineering Sciences.

A key feature of this degree is the development of scientific and interdisciplinary (cross-faculty) research skills, including collection and analysis of data and critical review of the relevant literature.

The MEnvSci is normally a 12-18 month degree comprising a minimum of 90 points in taught papers at 500 level and a maximum 90 point thesis.  The balance of thesis papers to taught papers may be altered subject to permission from the graduate co-ordinator in your discipline of choice.

CONSUMER SCIENCES

Students must complete 30 hours of coursework. A minimum of 24 semester hours of course credit, including HES 509, two courses in statistics, and 15 hours in courses in the area of specialization are required. Students must complete 6 credit hours of thesis research and write a thesis. A final oral examination is required upon completion of the thesis, and a manuscript of publishable quality based on the thesis research is expected of each Plan I degree candidate.

FAMILY FINANCIAL PLANNING AND COUNSELING

In the financial planning specialty within the 30-hour Master of Science degree program, students will study economic and social influences on the family and learn how to help individuals and families achieve their financial goals. Coursework includes 24 hours of financial planning coursework and 6 hours of electives in the area of specialization. By taking two courses each semester, students may complete this M.S. degree in less than two years. The program is offered both in Tuscaloosa and by distance.

CONSUMER CONFLICT MANAGEMENT, NEGOTIATION, AND MEDIATION

The certificate requires the successful completion of 15 hours of course work, in addition to the hours required for the masters in the student’s discipline. All 15 hours may count toward the master’s degree. Students must apply and gain admission to the UA Graduate School. Students must adhere to all UA Graduate School admission policies and deadlines. See Section 4.3 of the UA Graduate Catalog.

Students who wish to complete the Graduate Certificate in Conflict Management, Negotiation, and Mediation must meet admissions criteria for the Master’s degree in General Studies in Human Environmental Sciences with a 3.0 or higher GPA. If the prospective student does not have the 3.0 overall GPA or a 3.0 on the last 60 hours of course work, then the student must provide the GRE or MAT with an appropriate score. CONSUMER QUALITY MANAGEMENT
