The Public Health MSc, PG Dip, PG Cert provides a comprehensive and integrated education in public health through a multidisciplinary study approach which is both academic and vocational. It draws upon the wealth of research, education and clinical expertise in the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine and is delivered by the Department of Primary Care & Public Health Sciences which has forged strong international links, particularly with US and European research and teaching partners.
The course aims to enable you to develop a critical understanding of public health providing the foundations for pursuing a career in public health, or for enhancing existing practice and facilitating career advancement, particularly through contributing to the emerging evidence base for public health interventions.
Students study a suite of modules which provide a comprehensive understanding of public health. However, you may wish to specialise in either Mental Health or Global Health. These specialist pathways are available at MSc and PG Dip level where students first study a specific module and then apply the knowledge gained in the dissertation and research related modules.
This modular course is delivered entirely online allowing students to manage their study time alongside other life commitments. Students will be taught and assessed using a variety of innovative methods designed for distance learning by instructional designers and learning technologists. Teaching will be delivered through video lectures, webinars, discussion boards and other interactive methods. Opportunity to specialise in Global or Mental Health
The MSc in Public Health provides a generic and comprehensive study pathway. However, students may wish to specialise within a specific context of public health, global health or mental health.
The Global Health pathway aims to provide students with a critical understanding of the issues and dynamics informing Global Health and the provision of Public Health. This will be provided by King’s Centre for Global Health and Health Partnerships whose multi-professional group of clinicians, academics and policy experts have strong links with health programmes in Somaliland, Sierra Leone and Zambia.
The Mental Health pathway aims to provide students with a critical understanding of mental health and the role of Public Health in preventing mental illness and promoting mental well-being. This module is taught by the world-renowned Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience Europe’s largest centre for postgraduate education in its field.

These Masters-level programmes in Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management have been created to address the important need for up-skilling employees in advanced, specialist topics in health, safety and environmental management. They are the only courses of their kind created with and endorsed by NEBOSH at Masters-level, and offer those already working in industry and holding a NEBOSH diploma or BSc the chance to enhance their skills and techniques. Studying these courses will help students identify and resolve real issues relating to them in their day-to-day roles - enhanced by the final dissertation, which is written on a research project from their own work.
The programmes are completely employer focused, using current employment to evidence achievement, and are studied part-time using e-learning modules to enable study anywhere in the UK - or overseas. There are three specific pathways that can be chosen; Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management, Occupational Health and Safety Management, or Environmental Management. Each pathway can be studied either as a taught-focused MSc or more research-focused MRes making it easier to tailor the course to individual needs and study-styles.
Both the MSc and MRes start with core modules relating to techniques for undertaking research:
MSc students then study two core modules of their programme and one optional taught module.
The optional modules are themed around: Disaster and Emergency Management, REACH management, Safety Case Production and Assessment, and Mental Health at Work.
For MSc students the taught modules are taken in the first year and the first semester of the second year, using the University’s e-learning environment. You also supplement learning with your own background reading. Once these have been completed, the last six months of the course consist of the research dissertation.
For MRes students, after completing the modules covering research methodology, the programme is followed by a 12 month 120 credit research project on a workplace-based topic in health, safety and/or environmental management.
The online nature of the programme means access to a stable broadband internet connection is required for access to course materials, to communicate with University staff and undertake course assessments.

Recognised by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) as having cognate degree status, the expertise developed through studying this course will assist you in demonstrating the proficiency required for application for entry on to the United Kingdom Voluntary Register of Public Health Specialists.
You will be engaged with a number of ideas drawn from law, economics and the social and physical sciences which are of relevance to the theory and practice of environmental and public intervention. Modules address existing and emerging challenges and explore contemporary management, technological and regulatory systems designed to reduce environmental risks.
A feature of the course is applied learning and an emphasis on authentic, experimental problem based learning ensuring that students learn from their experiences while they are supported in reviewing the progress of their own learning.
For the MSc, the full-time and part-time routes comprise three 14-week semesters or five 14-week semesters, which you can take within one or three years respectively.
Within the full-time course, you will study four taught modules as well as completing a dissertation. Three modules are compulsory with two studied in semester 1 and the remaining one in semester 2. For the remaining module in semester 2 you have an optional choice, see below for available choices.
For part-time students the taught components span two academic years each consisting of two semesters between September and May. Year 1 involves the study of two core modules. Year 2 involves the study of one core and one optional module. During your third year of the course you will complete a dissertation.

Several employment opportunities exist in developing policy and implementing environmental and public health practice in local authorities, health services, voluntary organisations and private companies. Graduates of this course have found positions as planners and administrators in public health intervention units, trainers in community education services, have been promoted to more senior posts in environmental health practice or embarked on research studies leading to the award of PhD.
The course emphasises the development of professional skills and capabilities supplemented by practice-based learning opportunities. Your employability is developed through project work with external clients and through opportunities to work on a specific business problem for your dissertation.

This is one of the few postgraduate environmental health courses in the UK accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), providing a direct route into the profession.
Research Excellence Framework 2014
Research Excellence Framework 2014: 20% of our research in the Public Health, Health Services and Primary Care unit is world leading or internationally excellent.
Successful completion of a CIEH accredited course is the first stage of becoming a Registered Environmental Health Practitioner. You will also need to produce a Portfolio of Professional Practice (PPP) covering all five intervention areas and complete the professional interview. For the PPP you will be required to engage in work-related learning activities. These elements of the course are managed by the CIEH and further information can be obtained from their website.
Our course is designed to prepare you for the next steps of your professional training and includes work-related activities that may help you complete some elements of the your PPP. You will also be actively encouraged to seek relevant experience as this may shorten the time required post-graduation to complete the CIEH requirements.
Subject to meeting CIEH requirements, you will be eligible to become a graduate member of the institute. You could then progress towards becoming a registered environmental health practitioner following completion of a Portfolio of Professional Practice and a professional interview. Your portfolio could be shaped by your placement experience and course activities. It may also include evidence derived from course activities or other types of work experience.
