MSc Environmental Governance critically analyses some of the key environmental challenges of our time, exploring the connections between environmental governance and policies and the production, distribution and consumption of resources.
The course will develop your ability to apply sophisticated, critical and interdisciplinary sustainability and environmental theories at multiple scales and in different geographical contexts.
As part of the course, you'll have the unique opportunity to collaborate and engage with cutting-edge researchers and world-leading experts on environmental governance, political ecology, Marxist political economy and urban sustainability. You will learn from real-world practitioners, and liaise with external organisations on live policy problems.

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 27 months. There are NO evening or weekend course units available on the part-time programme, therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director first and also seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.
Eight taught units comprise two-thirds of the programme. The remainder of the programme consists of a 12,000 word dissertation on an approved topic. Typical course units comprise two hours a week of seminar or small-group work. Together these units involve a range of formative and summative assessments, including individual and group work, oral presentations and long essays, project work and reports. Coursework is designed to allow you to pursue your particular areas of interest.
In the summer semester, you work independently to undertake dissertation work based on primary and/or secondary data, or else a more philosophical/theoretical dissertation. We encourage you develop research in collaboration with members of the Society and Environment Research Group and external organisations.

The increase in environmental regulation and concerns globally about climate change, distinction of species, deforestation, loss of green belt and more has lead to an increased focus about how best to manage environmental issues longer term. Many organisations across all sectors have found successful collaborations and partnerships have not only helped them manage risk but improve their learning's within environmental management. As population increases there is more demand on planning to provide an effective level of environmental understanding and knowledge. Often this relationship between planning and environment has been fractious due to economic benefit arguments or other planning benefits.
This has provided a huge gap at times in knowledge transfer at the right times, but in also managing brands and their reputation. The risks are very great if environment is not managed correctly and with proper process leading to bad decision making for future generations at worst, and in the best of situations ensuring correct decisions take place with full knowledge of impacts across a range of partner organisations and their environmental interest areas.
The degree combines multiple disciplines to give you a contemporary environmental context of development from a scientific and social perspective with practical tools to inform decision making.

The MSc Environmental Monitoring and Assessment course provides graduates with the knowledge and professional skills required for a career as an environmental scientist in this fast-growing and rapidly-changing industry. Through this challenging and innovative masters degree you will learn how to accurately monitor environmental data and assess predicted change for the safe and responsible management of our environment.
In your first semester, you will engage in practical work such as developing an Environmental Management System for a real-life client organisation. As this manual will meet the requirements of the international standard ISO14001 you will have a unique skills set from a postgraduate course making you more employable as an environmental professional. You will also study modules in Environmental Impact Assessment and Sustainable Resource Management, developing critical skills sets for students aiming to pursue a career as an environmental scientist.
In your second semester, you will learn to interpret environmental data and apply innovative research techniques. You will study Environmental Law and Management which will enable you to apply your understanding of environmental data, processes and impacts to the legal and policy mechanisms around our environment. Throughout both semesters we aim to equip you with a diverse range of professional and transferable skills.
Each semester, you have the option to specialise in modules related to your interests and career aspirations, from Energy Resources & Engineering to Geographical Information Systems to Air Quality and Environmental Pollution.
The final part of the year will focus on your individual research work. You will complete an advanced research project and be encouraged to work with industry to apply your newly developed knowledge.
