This interdisciplinary Master's programme presents environmental issues and technologies within a systems engineering context. Graduates will understand interactions between the natural environment, people, processes and technologies to develop sustainable solutions.

Degree information

Students will develop an understanding of systems engineering and environmental engineering. Environmental engineering is a multidisciplinary branch of engineering concerned with devising, implementing and managing solutions to protect and restore the environment within an overall framework of sustainable development. Systems engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with the development and management of large complex systems.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of four core modules (60 credits), a collaborative environmental systems project (30 credits), two optional modules (30 credits) and an individual environmental systems dissertation (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) is offered.

Dissertation/report
All MSc students undertake an independent research project addressing a problem of systems research, design or analysis, which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratory classes and projects. The individual and group projects in the synthesis element involve interaction with industrial partners, giving students real-life experience and contacts for the future. Assessment is through written examination, coursework, presentations, and group and individual projects.

Programme summary

We are facing a future with an increased demand for food, water, energy and other resources, which will have an enormous impact on our already heavily burdened environment. Environmental challenges for the future include using our resources efficiently, minimising our impact on nature, and creating and changing people’s awareness and behaviour towards their environment.

The MSc Environmental Sciences programme is designed for students who want to take up this challenge in finding innovative and sustainable approaches to secure and improve the state of the environment. This programme provides insight into the socioeconomic causes, the characteristics of pollution and degradation of the natural environment, and their effects on human beings and ecosystems. By taking an interdisciplinary approach, students learn to develop analytical tools and models, environmental technologies, socio-political arrangements and economic instruments to prevent and control environmental problems.

To allow you maximum flexibility in your individual course of study, there are no formal specialisations and compulsory elements are kept at a minimum. This allows you to tailor the programme to your individual needs. Major thesis research can be conducted in one of the ten thesis tracks (major) and each major can be combined with a minor in Environmental Communication or Education.

Thesis tracks

The ten thesis tracks are clustered in 4 groups.

Environmental Quality
Investigates the physical, chemical and biological processes that influence the quality of the environmental compartments: Soil, Water and Air; and the effects of pollutants on humans and ecosystems. Students can choose the thesis tracks Aquatic Ecology and Water Quality Management, Air Quality and Atmospheric Chemistry, Soil Biology and Biological Soil Quality, Soil Chemistry and Chemical Soil Quality, or Environmental Toxicology.

Environmental Systems Analysis
Studies the natural and social processes involved in environmental issues. It aims to develop integrative tools and methodologies and to apply these in strategic research. Students can choose to develop such an integrated approach via the thesis track Environmental Systems Analysis.

Environmental Policy and Economics
Covers the contribution of the social sciences to environmental research. The focus is on the social, political, legal and economic aspects of environmental issues and the goal is to provide students with the skills for studying, formulating and designing innovative forms of national and international environmental governance. You can choose a thesis track in the disciplines of Environmental Policy, Environmental Economics and Natural Resources, or Integrated Water Management.

Environmental Technology
Concentrates on biological, chemical and physical processes for water reuse and the recovery of nutrients, minerals and energy. The aim is to fully understand these processes in order to design and optimise innovative technologies for renewable energy, closing nutrient cycles and solving environmental issues. You can choose any of these topics via the thesis track Environmental Technology.

Your future career

Graduates from this programme are well-equipped to continue their scientific training in a PhD programme or to begin - or continue - a professional career requiring independent scientific performance. Students are taught the knowledge and skills needed to communicate with experts from different disciplines allowing them to play a key role in complex environmental and sustainability issues. Water, Waste and Environmental Engineering has been traditionally referred to as public health engineering in the United Kingdom. In this postgraduate course, the technical aspects of both natural and engineering environmental systems will be covered. There will be broad interdisciplinary subjects synthesizing knowledge from a wide spectrum of science and engineering, expanding the content of public health engineering, which in the UK has traditionally been responsible for developing the infrastructure for managing water and waste.

Teaching and learning

The number of contact hours (e.g. lectures, seminars and feedback on assignments) per module/course ranges from 50-75 hours for the one year full time programme or roughly equivalent to four hours per week per module. The expected self-study time is approximately 80-90 hours per module per year (roughly equivalent to four hours per week per module).

You will be taught by academics with a range of industrial and academia experience for each module.

Assessment

Project work, assignments and laboratory exercises in addition to substantial written examination of course materials will occur in most modules. The Environmental Engineering Research Project will require submission of a substantial final report/dissertation. Assessment of this module will involve participation in a poster and seminar presentation and a final oral examination.

Accreditation will be sought from the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and The Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) including the Institution of Civil Engineers, The Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and Institute of Highway Engineers.

You’ll study

You'll follow a curriculum of five core classes and a wide range of optional classes. Each class is taught for two to three hours per week over eight to 12 weeks.

Following successful completion of the taught component, you’ll undertake a dissertation from June to August. In addition to the dissertation topics proposed by course leaders and industrial partners, you may propose topics that can be of relevance to your employer.

For part-time study the modules can be taken over two years (attending classes typically one day per week) with the dissertation completed in Year 2 or 3.

The course is divided into three stages, the first two stages are generally taught through formal tuition, with stage three covering independent research in an academic or industrial setting.

You will build upon established fundamental civil/construction engineering and project management principles in order to confidently apply them to a range of complex construction project problems with due regard to social, economic and environmental issues.

Here are the units you will study:

Environmental Management for Civil Engineering: This unit introduces you to the main environmental issues associated with civil engineering projects and how they are considered and mitigated in the Environmental Assessment process.

Civil Engineering Science: In this unit you will study the integrated topics of analytical structural analysis, numerical analysis and solving engineering problems. Whilst being an introduction to the finite element method (FEM) and application of FEM software packages, this unit aims to give you the ability to solve engineering problems in the design of real structures.

Environmental Engineering Design Project: This unit gives you an opportunity to simulate the design activities of a civil engineering consultancy. Project briefs are typically drawn from the work of professional contacts in the civil engineering industry. You will be required to make professional contacts, obtain advice and guidance, carry out research and conduct site visits outside the University.

Strategic and General Management: In this unit you will cover management in the construction industry, and the development of organisational and project strategic direction, taking into account internal and external environments.

Independent Research Project: This covers the generic research framework within which new knowledge is discovered, and involves the practical application of research skills and techniques to a chosen system within the construction industry.

Programme Assessment

Teaching on this course will focus on small lectures, seminars and discussion groups. It will also centre on supporting your independent learning strategies, which tutorials will help to develop.

The aim of this module is to introduce the principles, concepts and key issues of managing sustainable water and environmental sanitation services for low-income consumers in developing countries.

The aim of this module is to better enable participants to plan for and manage urban water and sanitation services in developing countries.

Facilities

Distance Learning students study from home but are welcome to visit the Loughborough campus. They can make remote use of the University Library’s electronic search facilities. They can also remotely access the WEDC ‘Knowledge Base’, which has links to many sources of useful and relevant information.

Facilities on campus include our laboratory which houses equipment for field sampling and analysis of water and wastewater, and some of the largest hydraulics equipment in the UK. Although Distance Learners will not normally have access to this equipment they can ask the advice of laboratory staff if they are carrying out fieldwork as part of their dissertation.

How you will learn

Distance Learning students study from home but are welcome to visit the Loughborough campus. They can make remote use of the University Library’s electronic search facilities and the WEDC ‘Knowledge Base’, which has links to many sources of useful and relevant information.

The programme comprises both compulsory core modules, and optional modules which may be selected. The Case Study module draws together material from across the programme. A research dissertation between 75 and 150 pages long on a chosen topic relevant to interests or career development concludes the programme. Many of the Distance Learning modules have web-based discussion forums, where Distance Learners can choose to interact with each other and Module Tutors.

The method of delivery for the learning materials is mainly portable and paper-based, to suit students who are living or working in areas of the world with poor internet connectivity, or those who travel frequently. We also arrange some webinars which are recorded for students who are unable to participate.

During the programme students build up an excellent library of well-produced bound module notes, additional resources and relevant text books. In addition to the printed version we are developing and planning to provide e-reader versions of some module notes to enhance portability.

- Assessment
For most modules, students are assessed by two written assessments (three items for core modules). The Case Study module relates to a given scenario for which the student has to produce pre-feasibility and feasibility reports. The individual research dissertation module is assessed on the basis of a written dissertation and an oral when a student discusses their submitted dissertation with their supervisor and a second member of staff. For students who cannot visit the UK this oral takes place over Skype.

Careers and further study

Many WEDC students and alumni work for international NGOs (MSF, Oxfam, SCF, GOAL, WaterAid, etc.) and agencies (such as UNICEF), or National Governments. Distance Learning students already working in these sectors find their new skills to be directly relevant and readily applicable to their jobs.
Graduate job titles include Technical Manager, Programme Engineer, Water and Sanitation Consultant, Project Manager, Environmental Health Officer and WASH Coordinator.

LSBU has been offering courses in Acoustics for over 35 years, and houses the only centre for study with this level of facilities in the South-East of England,including full-size reverberant and anechoic chambers and an exceptionally well equipped and staffed laboratory, with access to the very latest instrumentation and technology.

This is a professionally focused applied degree and practical work is an essential part of the course, giving you direct experience of modern measurement equipment and techniques. The modules are directly relevant to the practice of acoustics, and also consider the broader aspects of investigation and control of the built environment. Half of teaching time is spent in the laboratory, and this focus is reflected in the balance between coursework and exams.

Individual modules can be taken separately as part of continuing professional development. Modules

- Acoustics laboratory
This module aims to convey the nature of sound and vibration with a considerable depth of knowledge through practical means, giving you an understanding of how to accurately measure sound, how sound behaves, and practical aspects of noise control. It introduces you to the basic principles of acoustics, familiarises you with modern sound level meters, measurement parameters and measurement techniques for noise surveys, room acoustics, sound absorption and sound insulation. You should be able to produce an accurate report to consultancy level which is critical of the laboratory, experiment, technique or instrumentation by comparison to the appropriate international standard.

- Architectural acoustics
The module provides specific acoustics knowledge as relevant to buildings and in particular rooms. The aims of the module are to gain understanding of room acoustics, measurement of room acoustic parameters and the various means of modelling the sound field in rooms across the frequency range.

- Measurement and control of sound
This module is designed to teach, at an advanced level, the physical mechanisms by which noise may be created, as well as to provide the analytic and practical skills required to control noise and vibration from a variety of sources. The module instils the knowledge of how to undertake noise and vibration measurements to meet specific acoustical standards and guidance.

- Subjective and environmental acoustics
Teaches, at an advanced level, the physical mechanisms by which the ear/brain interact to hear. The aims of the module are to: appreciate how human hearing deteriorates dependent on a number of variables; how legislation has developed to protect workers and how hearing protection can help under certain conditions; to appreciate the difference between subjective loudness and objective measurements; to learn how acoustic comfort criteria and legislation have been developed and applied to protect people in different environments.

- Environmental management
The module develops understanding of the way that human social and economic activities impact on the environment. The emphasis is on how managers can assess and influence the environmental impact of their particular organisation, with reference to key technologies and the political and legal constraints within which organisations must operate.

- Research methods
This module focuses on the essential communication and analytic skills required in research, including techniques for successful dissertation writing.

Completion of the MSc satisfies the academic requirement for corporate membership of the Institute of Acoustics. The process of attaining Chartered Engineer status is offered through the Institute o fAcoustics or the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.

- Architectural acoustics:
Many types of new buildings need careful acoustic design to make them sound good, to protect them from nearby noise sources, to make them productive and pleasant places to live or work in and to make them commercially successful. This is especially true for places like concert halls, but equally applicable to universities, residential buildings, leisure centres and many others. Day-to-day tasks could include: design meetings with architects and other engineers, noise surveys of existing and new sites, design using computer and physical models, communication of the design to the client and design team, project management, site supervision and commissioning of the finished projects. - Environmental noise:
Noise is a major issue for society: 80 million EU citizens live in unacceptably noisy areas. Environmental health officers consider noise in planning new developments, such as housing affected by noise, or new noisy activities, and enforcement of existing noise concerns including the sources of complaints from the public. Consultants in environmental noise work in small specialists firms or large multinational consultancies, including engineering firms. Junior staff measure noise and use computer models to predict noise levels from new developments such as roads, railways and industrial plants. Work Placement

As part of the class Independent Study in Collaboration with Industry you can apply to work with industry projects. One of the projects is the Carbon Clinic. This is an innovative collaborative project between the Carbon Trust and the University. It aims to provide support to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to reduce their carbon footprint and give you practical experience on environmental responsibilities within a business.

This option is popular with students in employment, who may wish to undertake modules for Continuing Professional Development purposes.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The programme aims to provide graduates with:
-A comprehensive and robust understanding of key areas of water and environmental engineering
-Skills that will enable students to explore, critically assess and evaluate problems and produce systematic and coherent solutions integrating core engineering science with practical applications both independently and within a team structure
-An understanding of how this knowledge can be articulated around sustainable development practices
-A sound base for enhanced communication skills both oral and written
-A pathway that will prepare graduates for successful careers in the field including, where appropriate, progression to Chartered Engineer status

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, skills, qualities and other attributes in the following areas.

Knowledge and understanding
-The fundamental principles underpinning the key topics covered in the subject area
-Investigation and research techniques which provide a sound base for critical evaluation, selection and use of a wide range of scientific, technical and management processes relevant to the field
-The multidisciplinary nature of the subject area and its underlying principles and the importance of developing integrated approaches to solving complex problems
-The importance of identifying emerging trends to existing knowledge structures and theoretical frameworks and propose new alternative application and methodological approaches relevant to the student’ s research interests
-Management, organisation and communication skills including problem definition, project and experimental design, time management, decision making processes, independent and team work, knowledge transfer via written and oral presentations

Intellectual/cognitive skills
-An integrated and multidisciplinary approach to solving complex problems using professional judgment taking into consideration the engineering, economic, social and environmental impacts
-The ability to critically evaluate outcomes and accurately assess and report on own/others work with justification and relate them to existing knowledge structures and methodologies
-The ability to formulate, conduct and write-up a systematic and coherent research programme topic demonstrating in-depth knowledge and high level of problem solving skills

Professional practical skills
-Critical review of the scientific literature for effective justification and support of results and decisions
Acquisition of the necessary skills to collect as well as generate data via laboratory experiments or computer-based programmes
-Critical analysis of results/recommendations and their presentation in a concise and logical manner
-Preparation of technical reports and presentation of work to an informed audience
