At the end of the classroom portion of the program, each student will be required to complete a Final Management Project of approximately 20,000 words in length under the guidance of a GGSB professor.

In order to successfully complete the Final Management Project, students are required to address a particular research question or knowledge gap in their field of study.

This research should be business-oriented and coherent with the program’s objectives. A student may choose to write the Final Management Project on a topic grounded in his or her internship experience.

During this program, participants will have the opportunity to become real-life business developers by exploring a Live Business Case provided by companies working in partnerships with the MSc Innovation, Strategy, and Entrepreneurship program. Students will work in groups and delve deeply into their cases during the seven months from October to June under the supervision of a GGSB coach.The Live Business Cases are launched by a briefing given by the company.

LIVE BUSINESS CASES WILL COVER:

- Innovation, entrepreneurship, and management issues from an integrated, holistic perspective.
- A capstone opportunity for students to apply theoretical principles from coursework and lectures.

AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE LIVE BUSINESS CASE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

- Build a company analysis
- Select and apply a methodology, and make useful and efficient recommendations.
- Understand the Business Development process
- Provide critical analysis
- Make strategic decisions
- Work in a small multicultural group under time constraints
- Produce compelling written and oral presentations

At the end of the seven-month Live Business Case, each group will produce a written report and make an oral presentation to the Jury and other groups from the program. The Jury consists of the company coach, the school coach, and the program director.

MANAGERIAL CREATIVITY : A METHOD OF SELF MANAGEMENT BY THE STUDENTS

This course/workshop is an introduction to all group assignments to be carried out all through the year. In order to help you to be efficient when working in small groups, you need to know not only your personal strengths and improvement points but also those of your class.

By discovering them during this course, you will be able to imagine together how to leverage the strengths of your class and how to manage your improvement points. You have to manage the classroom as a company, so we will appoint different representatives in charge of the main aspects of the construction of the class as a performing team: event manager, class representative, timekeeper, project leader, MSc community leader, and Alumni communication and coordination manager. These representatives and their teams will draft an action plan for the coming year.

Foreign Languages

Foreign language skills are essential in business today and the program is taught in English but provides the possibility to learn a foreign language at the same time. No prior knowledge of French is required to attend the program. Non-French speakers may study French. Native and fluent French speakers will have the possibility to choose from Spanish or Chinese. The language component is not compulsory.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

The programme is focused on developing enterprise and entrepreneurship educators and leaders in schools, Higher and Further Education. As such the emphasis is on supporting an entrepreneurial mind set - enabling educators to develop young people to live, work, enjoy and be unafraid to create ventures in a world of greater uncertainty and complexity.

Its educational aims are to:
-Produce autonomous learners who have an understanding of how to enhance their performance as enterprise and entrepreneurship educators through the development of conceptual underpinning and the application of learning from experience, insight and research
-Promote critical analysis of contemporary entrepreneurial education theories and concepts required for effective enterprise and entrepreneurship teaching and learning
-Develop in learners the ability to blend theory and practice in complex situations, both systematically and creatively, to improve enterprise and entrepreneurship education
-Enhance lifelong learning skills and personal development in learners so they are able to work with self-direction and originality, contributing to the development of enterprise and entrepreneurship in education

Key aspects of the programme:
-Location – Each module starts with a three day residential study block at Coventry University and guest host institutions. This gives exposure to a range of teaching spaces and educational contexts
-Delivery methods – The course will use and explore a variety of teaching practices, facilitate access to externals experts, and provide opportunities to reflect on practice and skills building
-Structures to support students – This will include online learning platforms, peer mentoring, and tutor support for development pledges and dissertation supervision

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

There are three stages of the programme:
-Postgraduate Certificate in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Education.
-Postgraduate Diploma in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Education.
-MA Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Education.

Each stage must be passed before progressing onto the next.

Progression to the Masters level is dependent upon completion of the Postgraduate Certificate in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Education and the Postgraduate Diploma in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Education. It is possible to register for each stage separately, but if you do so, timetabling may result in some delay between stages.

Much of the learning takes place outside the classroom so that students can see first-hand how business works in China and can develop an understanding of how to engage effectively with international partners and clients.

Programme outline

The MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management programme can be taken on a full-time or part-time basis and commences in the September of each year. Students are required to take taught modules and prepare an individual dissertation or an extended business plan.

The structure of this programme is modular, with individual taught modules each typically have a weighting of 15 credits. One credit represents 10 hours of student work, meaning that a 15 credit module represents 150 hours of study including formal teaching, independent study, revision, and preparation for assessments. This degree requires the successful completion of 180 credits; 90 of which consist of taught modules, 30 for an Entrepreneurship project and 60 credits for the Entrepreneurship Business Plan or Dissertation project.

The MA in more detail

The MA in Social Entrepreneurship is one of the few graduate programmes in the world dedicated entirely to the study of the fast-moving field of social entrepreneurship and innovation.

It will equip you with a strong understanding of foundational theories of entrepreneurship, innovation, social problems and policy (with organisational sociology as the base discipline) while supplying practical tools in relation to entrepreneurial modelling and SROI.

There is also a marked emphasis on creativity, which means that you will have considerable scope to choose the precise topics you wish to tackle and the approaches you wish to apply. Teaching on the course is interactive and seminar-driven rather than based on the traditional model of long lectures and limited discussions.

What you study

The programme will introduce you to key concepts in the historical development of social enterprise and innovation and to its changing role in society and the economy. Seminars and talks will be given by social entrepreneurs, as well as leading professionals.

You'll learn innovative approaches to developing an enterprise, and gain confidence in revenue generation and financial modelling.

A significant amount of the learning is delivered through group projects and activities. This is designed to develop your individual communication skills and teamwork.

The programme consists of five core modules:

Theories of Creative, Cultural and Social Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurial Modelling

Social Return On Investment: Principles and Practice

In addition to these main modules, we also regularly invite external experts from intermediaries such as UnLtd and other educational institutions such as the University of Oxford to ensure our students get access to a wide range of cutting-edge topics in the field. Social and alternative finance is among the key areas examined in such guest lectures; social innovation cases from particular country-contexts such as, for example, South Korea, Japan and Colombia also feature frequently.

We are occasionally able to provide additional training in related fields (such as accounting) in the form of short-term workshops to strengthen our students’ educational experience at Goldsmiths and at the University of London. We also encourage you to become members of various social entrepreneurship/collaboration hubs around London for learning and networking purposes.

A non-business school programme

The MA in Social Entrepreneurship at Goldsmiths is quite unlike traditional business/management-driven courses in the field: on the one hand, it allows scope for a far deeper examination of the theoretical and practical foundations of social innovation; on the other, it provides unique access to an expanding learning community (formed by our students and our wider, growing network) engaged in real-time research.

Equally important is the fact that students are consciously encouraged to, and supported with, forming their professional public profiles, through things like:

blogging (eg via The Golden Angle blog that students founded in 2013-2014)
public speaking
interactive research projects
developing your own social enterprise
Because our students possess diverse, highly relevant knowledge that they have accumulated prior to coming to Goldsmiths, real efforts are made to integrate this knowledge and experience into the collective learning processes.

One relevant tool that we employ here is an interactive peer-review process that we employ to raise the quality of student output, which means that often student essays (not just dissertations) are of publishable quality. Many students choose to investigate topics that they intend to focus on in the next stage of their career. Programme Assessment

Our friendly and supportive environment uses formal lectures, workshops, and seminars to provide the basis for the development of relevant knowledge, further enhanced by activity-based case studies. We utilise both theory and practice-oriented teaching. Teaching and learning is through weekly half-day sessions, depending on whether you are taking the course full or part-time.

For each unit you will be assessed in a way that will deepen your knowledge of the subjects covered. This will involve you thinking and working in an original way to overcome genuine problems. At the end of the course you will also complete a dissertation which can be related to your workplace, your future career, or a desired business venture.

Our MSc in Management (with specialism in Entrepreneurship) is an intensive one-year programme that offers you a unique opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding of small business enterprise and entrepreneurship, while gaining a thorough grounding in the core theories and concepts that are central to a career in management today. It will be of particular interest to graduates looking to start your own enterprise, whether that be an online business, a family firm or even a social enterprise.

You will start by studying management theory across a range of core disciplines, including Finance and Accounting, Organisational Behaviour and Strategic Management. In term two you will gain a deeper insight into entrepreneurship by studying two units: Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, and Digital Enterprise. Finally, in the summer term the dissertation provides an opportunity for independent research and in-depth investigation into a particular aspect of entrepreneurship.

Our programme is designed for graduates of any discipline who aspire to a career in management. You will not require any prior academic or practical experience in business or management but would benefit from having an inquisitive mind-set and a genuine interest in interrogating research in the field, to develop your knowledge and understanding for use in later practice.

You will be part of a dynamic and diverse body of staff and students at the School of Economics, Finance and Management and will be taught by experts, many of whom are actively engaged in conducting pioneering research at international level. Our school was ranked sixth in the UK for its research impact, reflecting the quality and contribution our research plays in shaping policy and practice in the UK, Europe and globally.

Programme structure

Term One
You will study the four core units that are common to all of our MSc Management programmes:

Term Two
You will deepen your understanding of entrepreneurship by studying two core units that are central to this specialism. This will be supported by choosing two further management units that will broaden your skills and give further opportunity to tailor your studies to your own interests and career aspirations:
• E-commerce
• Enterprise and Entrepreneurship
• Two further management units. Optional units vary from year to year but typically include:

Term Three
The final part of the MSc is a project-based dissertation of between 12,000 to 15,000 words in which you will research a current theme or topic in entrepreneurship. You will be able to tailor your investigation to a setting that reflects your personal interests or future career aspirations. The dissertation provides the perfect opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned in both the management and the entrepreneurship aspects of the programme. It is also a powerful way of showcasing your talent to future employers, providing you with the confidence and platform to launch your own business ideas.

Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Accreditation

 This course is dual accredited by CMI – a CMI accreditation means you have the option to graduate with your degree and gain a professional CMI qualification (Level 7 in Strategic Management and Leadership) and there’s no extra study involved. This accreditation is not only a hallmark of excellence, but also provides you with benefits. For example, student members can access online content, networking events, company visits, online seminars and mentoring.

A CMI Induction event will be held so you can find out about the CMI qualification and membership and choose whether you would like to qualify and join. If you do choose to gain the CMI qualification you will need to pay a non-refundable fee for the CMI level 7 qualification in Strategic Management & Leadership, which is currently £265 and includes one-year membership of the CMI.

Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments.

Teaching staff at the Business School are academic researchers and/or from an industry background with an in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from business, industry, consultancies and research bodies provide further input.

Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or visual presentation work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include reports, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project work, visual and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, oral exams (viva) and practical exercises. The majority of assessments are based on individual assignments, but there is some assessed group work.

Field trips

By listening to our students and recognising the need for practice-oriented business and management education, we have introduced new ways to engage with companies from the public and the non-profit sector. You will have the opportunity to visit various company sites organised through our extensive network of corporate contacts and the Chartered Management Institute. We also host a number of guest speakers throughout the year who bring their business and management experience and expertise to the classroom.

We offer an International Business in Practice Study Trip module. The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. Dissertation

During the final three months of the degree you will produce a dissertation. This is an independent, practice-oriented research project associated with developing an initial business idea into a viable business model. The business idea to be developed as part of the dissertation project may be chosen in four different settings: (1) independent venture; (2) corporate venture (i.e. an entrepreneurial effort by an existing company); (3) family venture (i.e. an entrepreneurial effort by a family business); (4) social venture (i.e. entrepreneurial effort in pursuit of a social mission).

Teaching & Learning Methods

You will be exposed to a variety of teaching and learning methods that could include: interactive lectures, case studies, seminar presentations and group project work. As this is a Masters level course, we place a significant emphasis on independent, directed, private study that is often conducted in learning sets or groups.

Assessment

A variety of individual and group assessment methods are used throughout the degree including assignments, exams, presentations, reports and exercises. The dissertation consists of a 10-15,000 word extended piece of individual research, supervised by a member of faculty.

Students gain a solid core of business, project management and team working skills, and are given the opportunity to hone their technical skills.
