If you are interested in working entrepreneurially, whether that is in a large multinational, your own business, or as a business consultant or analyst, this course is designed for you.

You will take our cutting-edge Ingenuity module where you will consider how to solve problems by thinking differently, as well as taking modules in leading entrepreneurial growth, launching new ventures and entrepreneurial creativity.

Your new knowledge is then deployed through a 'live' consultancy project with a fast-growing, local business where you will develop a report to show how the business can exploit new market opportunities – which is one of the things our students most like about the course.

Our approach is not to tell people how to become entrepreneurs, but to really engage them in practice so they develop their own entrepreneurial capabilities. You will cover core subjects in creativity, launching new ventures, and entrepreneurship in context, along with leading entrepreneurial growth and the unique Ingenuity project. You will also have a wide variety of options to tailor the course to your career aspirations.

Academic English preparation and support

If you require additional support to take your language skills to the required level, you may be able to attend a presessional course at the Centre for English Language Education, which is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English in the UK. Students who successfully complete the presessional course to the required level can progress to postgraduate study without retaking IELTS or equivalent.

Course details

Across the autumn and spring semesters, you will take 120 credits of taught modules including a 30-credit entrepreneurship consultancy project. Each module typically consists of 10 two or three hour sessions.

You will complete a 60-credit 14,000-word dissertation or business plan over the summer, and will be allocated an appropriate dissertation supervisor who will oversee your progress.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a combination of individual essays or group projects and written exams.

You will be equipped with specialist and in-depth understanding of entrepreneurship and innovation together with practical skills, enhancing your employability.

The course draws upon the highest level of theory and practice in this field and builds on the extensive research and teaching expertise of academics within the School of Management. The content of this course is continually updated to reflect contemporary issues and areas of interest, such as family business management, entrepreneurship and consultancy, and social entrepreneurship.

Teaching & assessment

The courses are interactive, usually offering a lecture-style background of key theories and principles in the first part, and more practical activities, exercises and group discussions in the second part of the lectures. Guest lectures are invited in different classes to give students a real-world experience on entrepreneurship. Participation from students in the classroom is a key principle for learning.

Outside the classroom, in the Autumn Term we organise a field trip to an entrepreneurship hub, and in the Spring term we organise a field trip to a small business. These provide more opportunities to visit and learn from real entrepreneurs in their environment, giving more opportunities to advance their ideas after their studies. In addition, entrepreneurship activities from student societies on campus could be integrated in the teaching process to bridge theory and practice. 

Assessment

Assessment is carried out by a variety of methods. In the classroom, you will engage in a number of activities, simulations, case-study discussions and presentations where you will receive instant feedback from you lecturers.

Formal assessments include coursework in the form of individual or group assignments, but also presentations, posters, or digital media content creation depending on the course. Examinations are towards the May exam period and in-class test could take place during the last weeks of each course.

After the teaching term, students will be allocated a supervisor that will guide them through an Independent Business Research Project. The year-in-business students will be allocated a mentor that will follow their progress and work, assisting them in keeping a log and writing a similar final project. At the end of the classroom portion of the program, each student will be required to complete a Final Management Project of approximately 20,000 words in length under the guidance of a GGSB professor.

In order to successfully complete the Final Management Project, students are required to address a particular research question or knowledge gap in their field of study.

This research should be business-oriented and coherent with the program’s objectives. A student may choose to write the Final Management Project on a topic grounded in his or her internship experience.

During this program, participants will have the opportunity to become real-life business developers by exploring a Live Business Case provided by companies working in partnerships with the MSc Innovation, Strategy, and Entrepreneurship program. Students will work in groups and delve deeply into their cases during the seven months from October to June under the supervision of a GGSB coach.The Live Business Cases are launched by a briefing given by the company.

LIVE BUSINESS CASES WILL COVER:

- Innovation, entrepreneurship, and management issues from an integrated, holistic perspective.
- A capstone opportunity for students to apply theoretical principles from coursework and lectures.

AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE LIVE BUSINESS CASE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

- Build a company analysis
- Select and apply a methodology, and make useful and efficient recommendations.
- Understand the Business Development process
- Provide critical analysis

- Work in a small multicultural group under time constraints

At the end of the seven-month Live Business Case, each group will produce a written report and make an oral presentation to the Jury and other groups from the program. The Jury consists of the company coach, the school coach, and the program director.

MANAGERIAL CREATIVITY : A METHOD OF SELF MANAGEMENT BY THE STUDENTS

This course/workshop is an introduction to all group assignments to be carried out all through the year. In order to help you to be efficient when working in small groups, you need to know not only your personal strengths and improvement points but also those of your class.

By discovering them during this course, you will be able to imagine together how to leverage the strengths of your class and how to manage your improvement points. You have to manage the classroom as a company, so we will appoint different representatives in charge of the main aspects of the construction of the class as a performing team: event manager, class representative, timekeeper, project leader, MSc community leader, and Alumni communication and coordination manager. These representatives and their teams will draft an action plan for the coming year.

Foreign Languages

Foreign language skills are essential in business today and the program is taught in English but provides the possibility to learn a foreign language at the same time. No prior knowledge of French is required to attend the program. Non-French speakers may study French. Native and fluent French speakers will have the possibility to choose from Spanish or Chinese. The language component is not compulsory.

Teaching & assessment

The courses are interactive, usually offering a lecture-style background of key theories and principles in the first part, and more practical activities, exercises and group discussions in the second part of the lectures. Guest lectures are invited in different classes to give students a real-world experience on entrepreneurship. Participation from students in the classroom is a key principle for learning.

Outside the classroom, in the Autumn Term we organise a field trip to an entrepreneurship hub, and in the Spring term we organise a field trip to a small business. These provide more opportunities to visit and learn from real entrepreneurs in their environment, giving more opportunities to advance their ideas after their studies. In addition, entrepreneurship activities from student societies on campus could be integrated in the teaching process to bridge theory and practice. 

Assessment

Assessment is carried out by a variety of methods. In the classroom, you will engage in a number of activities, simulations, case-study discussions and presentations where you will receive instant feedback from you lecturers.

Formal assessments include coursework in the form of individual or group assignments, but also presentations, posters, or digital media content creation depending on the course. Examinations are towards the May exam period and in-class test could take place during the last weeks of each course.

After the teaching term, students will be allocated a supervisor that will guide them through an Independent Business Research Project. The year-in-business students will be allocated a mentor that will follow their progress and work, assisting them in keeping a log and writing a similar final project. This final project gives an opportunity to test learn concepts and ideas in practice in a real business context via research and analysis.

The MA in Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship should be attractive if you either wish to develop a business arising from an existing creative practice or to understand how to create the infrastructure and environment for new creative businesses.

This programme offers a number of pathways:

It's an ideal Masters if you want to develop a business in one of these fields, or in new areas of the creative industries. All students bring a business idea to the programme to use as a live case study. 

The Masters is taught in partnership by a number of departments within Goldsmiths and with key individuals and organisations in the creative and cultural industries sector.

Our collective approach is to integrate entrepreneurship within the development of creative practices and to take a ‘creative’ approach to the development of new businesses and the infrastructure that supports them.

This programme is designed to allow you to continue to innovate, but also to provide the requisite business/entrepreneurial skills and attributes to commercialise your creative and cultural practices and/or knowledge.

You’ll be able to build on a historical and theoretical understanding of cultural and creative industries and the development of a cultural economy to create your own creative initiatives, which might be research-based, policy-based, practice-based, or a combination of any or all of these. Through the programme you will develop techniques to move your creative and critical thinking to entrepreneurial thinking.

This programme has an exit route at Postgraduate Diploma level. 

Modules & structure

The programme contains four taught modules and a further dissertation/portfolio component.

You'll have a range of choices throughout the degree enabling you to design a pathway that is most relevant to your academic, business and career ambitions.

All students take modules I and III, and you can choose between options offered for your chosen pathway for modules II and IV.

Attendance is mandatory for all taught sections of the programme. To encourage collaborative learning we try to teach all students together wherever possible, irrespective of their particular pathway.

Module IV: Entrepreneurial Practices and Modes of Production

OR Work Placement

You will undertake a work placement within an SME, Producing or Research Organisation within the cultural and creative industries. There will be initial taught/tutorial sessions on managing an internship and experiential learning and assessment would be by an analytical report on the ‘culture of management’ of the organisation. In some pathways this will be augmented by classes in specific skill areas (such as marketing) as you are likely to be working in skill-specific departments of organisations.

Module V: Dissertation or Project/Portfolio

The content and research imperatives of the dissertation/portfolio can be developed in tutorials with staff to address your individual needs. It could range from an entirely written document researching a particular area of the cultural and creative industries to a fully developed proposal for a new business.

Skills

You can expect to develop an independence and integrity in developing creative ideas. You will be able to apply entrepreneurial approaches to creative projects and demonstrate an understanding of different business models to establish a creative enterprise. You will also develop team-working and leadership skills, and effective business and communication skills.

Careers

The programme will enable those who have previously studied an area of creative study/practice, such as music, media, theatre and performance, design, or computer games, to start a career developing a business arising from an existing or new creative practice.

This may relate directly to a 'product' or 'process' arising from you own practice or to a form of 'expertise', 'consultancy' or 'knowledge'. About this degree

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, and class discussion. Students are given the opportunity to attend weekly lectures given by leading global entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. One of the only courses of its kind in the UK, this MSc in Management (Entrepreneurship) will provide students with a theoretical understanding of the nature of entrepreneurism, the role of entrepreneurs in the economy and the operating models of entrepreneurial businesses as well as equipping students with the skills to found, operate and grow their own business. The Management (Entrepreneurship) programme is designed both for students interested in starting their own business and those who want to work in large organisations but are interested in entrepreneurial change.

The MSc in Entrepreneurship is built upon the concept of Effectuation, a logic of entrepreneurial expertise that both novice and experienced entrepreneurs can use in the highly unpredictable start-up phase of a venture to reduce failure costs for the entrepreneur.

A new approach to entrepreneurship education. The MSc in Entrepreneurship prepares learners to live, craft, master and create entrepreneurship. It takes place both in the real world of the entrepreneur, and within ALBA’s “Business unusual” classrooms. From generating creative ideas to launching innovative “happenings”, from building a strong business model to detailed financial planning, the MSc in Entrepreneurship prepares participants for creating and leading the new ventures of the future. This unique and highly innovative Masters degree programme gives a taste of what it is like to run your own business and will appeal equally to aspiring entrepreneurs and those seeking leadership positions within larger organisations.

Much of the learning takes place outside the classroom so that students can see first-hand how business works in China and can develop an understanding of how to engage effectively with international partners and clients.

You will gain hands on experience by formulating and developing a business idea into a real business plan, while the Entrepreneurial Project will provide the opportunity to be embedded in a company where you can develop your innovative skills. These activities will engage you face-to-face with entrepreneurs in practice and expose you to real world business problem solving.  

Objectives

The MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management programme is designed to enable students to:

  • engage in a study of organisations (mostly new ventures and SMEs), their management and operation, and the changing economic and political climate in which they operate. 
  • prepare for and to develop a career in business and management. 
  • enhance lifelong learning skills and personal development to contribute to society at large. 
  • provide insights into the historical and current ideas in entrepreneurship.

Programme outline

The MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management programme can be taken on a full-time or part-time basis and commences in the September of each year. Students are required to take taught modules and prepare an individual dissertation or an extended business plan.

The structure of this programme is modular, with individual taught modules each typically have a weighting of 15 credits. One credit represents 10 hours of student work, meaning that a 15 credit module represents 150 hours of study including formal teaching, independent study, revision, and preparation for assessments. This degree requires the successful completion of 180 credits; 90 of which consist of taught modules, 30 for an Entrepreneurship project and 60 credits for the Entrepreneurship Business Plan or Dissertation project.

Teaching and learning

Teaching and learning sessions are highly interactive, with a case study focus, so that there is less emphasis on abstract theory and more emphasis on acquiring knowledge and decision-making skills that can be applied. Unlike ordinary marketing, finance and accounting programmes, entrepreneurship students will explore these subjects from the unique perspective of an entrepreneur, helping them to gain an understanding of the specific challenges faced when starting and developing a new business.

Career options for this degree

This degree provides an ideal study path for people wishing to start their own business or be involved in early stage start-up companies. Equally, as larger organisations are increasingly valuing people who can innovate and act entrepreneurially from a management perspective, those looking to pursue management careers will gain highly relevant and applicable skills.

Additionally the programme provides a strong base from which to undertake post graduate research study into the area of entrepreneurship.
