Suited to highly numerate individuals with a strong interest in digital technology, you’ll be immersed in the how and why of everything from computer animation to visual effects and gaming, gaining a deeper, more specialised insight into the technology behind digital entertainment.

What will I learn?

The MSc in Digital Entertainment is a practical, project-led programme where you’ll study and specialise in a range of modules including computer graphics and special effects, and the visual understanding behind computer games and artificial intelligence.

During your studies you’ll explore everything from understanding necessary approaches for creating visual effects, to looking at the relationship between the segmentation, classification and identification of images and video.

You’ll also gain exposure to modern visual effects tools, programming techniques and physics-based animation, with the opportunity to apply these and adapt algorithms to typical problems in an advanced visual effects R&D environment.

There’s an emphasis on self-driven research throughout the programme, due to the industry’s need for innovative thinkers who can produce cutting-edge, new generation products. Most lecturing takes place during the first two to three weeks of each semester, so you’ll have the autonomy to study in your own way and work on practical projects. But you’ll still have the support of the academic staff throughout your studies.

You can either study the MSc full-time, for one year, or take an optional professional placement and complete the course in two years. The placement offers paid, practical experience in an industrial or commercial environment. Here you’ll have the chance to apply the knowledge and skills you have gained so far, improving your understanding of digital entertainment in practice as you look to build a successful career in this field.

About the department

The new Department of Computer Science began life in August 2001, emerging from the Computing Group of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. It is a research-led department with a strong record in interdisciplinary research and postgraduate teaching.

EngD in Digital Media
The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Digital Media is an alternative to the traditional PhD for students who want a career in industry. A four-year programme combines PhD-level research projects with taught courses, and students spend about 75% of their time working directly with a company.

Develop your academic knowledge and awareness of issues in media and entertainment law, and increase your understanding of the legal dimension to activities taking place in the media and entertainment fields and the extent to which they might give rise to legal issues. This distance learning programme is taught in partnership with Informa and was created in response to the growing demand for legal education in the media sector and specifically the areas of media and entertainment contracts, sports law, intellectual property rights, and advertising law and data protection.

More about this course

This internationally recognised qualification has been developed for those who wish to acquire expertise in media and entertainment law. This is a rapidly growing area of law including intellectual property, contracts, and defamation as these relate to media, including social media, and to areas such as advertising, music and sports law.

Taught in partnership with Informa via their online learning platform, this distance learning course has been designed specifically for those working in, or wishing to enter the media and entertainment fields; or for those with, or without legal backgrounds who wish to broaden their expertise and to understand better the legal issues arising in these areas. It therefore welcomes applicants from both legal and non-legal backgrounds who have the potential to benefit from the programme and includes an introductory module to English law designed to assist those with no prior legal training.

Due to current and varied issues ranging from the way print media is regulated, to the ever increasing problems now facing companies over the misuse of social media, this course aims to bring a structure to the way the media and entertainment world is constantly trying to coexist with the law. The law can be deemed to play catch up with society and one reason for this is due to the expansion of technological developments within the industry; examples of this can be seen with issues such as cybercrime and WikiLeaks which this course will be investigating. The course is designed to merge commercial practical components and the theoretical understanding of the way these two industries work.

The purpose of the course is to enable you to:
-Develop an in-depth and practical understanding of media and entertainment law
-Understand the principles and practice of media and entertainment law and the changing commercial contexts in which these operate

Structure

Final Project & Dissertation
During this final project, you will undertake a project towards your dissertation, typically over the Spring-Summer period (May to September). We offer three options to our students:

Individual research project:

This is based on a research theme selected by you and agreed upon by the lecturing team. Recent examples include:
Building a cheap kinect-like gesture tracking system
AI (rule-based) platform for game level design
Software development for our mobile technology projects (iPhone based)
Assessment
Mainly based on coursework (involving programming), essays, final project and dissertation; some lecturers may also conduct exams/quizzes.

Attendance

The taught programme is organised into three terms (full-time). The Autumn term runs from early October to mid-December, the Winter/Spring term from mid-January to the end of March, and the Summer term runs, typically, from late April to mid-September. Taught modules are given during the Autumn and Winter/Spring terms, while the Final Project takes place during a Summer term (in the second year for part-time students).

This programme is focused on providing you with the skills and experience needed to secure a job in the computer games industry.

Skills

You'll develop excellent games programming skills. These skills are highly transferrable, as games programming is viewed by other industries as being very demanding and requiring a high level of technical ability.

The global computer games industry is valued at 60 billion USD and is predicted to continuously grow in years to come. It's a mature industry with companies such as EA, Ubisoft, and Blizzard Activision giving long-term career prospects, shares, and benefits. There is a big skills shortage in this growing sector.

Our intensely practical and pioneering Television MA course aims to train the entertainment directors and producers of tomorrow. Students are taught by NFTS staff and visiting Industry professionals.

Other crucial areas covered include how to pitch original programme ideas to broadcasters and how to set up an independent production company. Students also undertake a two-day long module on business and legal affairs supervised by top Industry lawyers Lee & Thompson.

Placements with leading production companies like Hat Trick, Studio Lambert and Maverick or broadcasters like the BBC and ITV are an integral part of the course.

By the time students graduate they have the craft, skill and confidence to direct and produce both in the studio and on location. They also have a thorough understanding of the television production process encompassing everything from the creative to the technical and the business aspects.

Unlike other schools, all production costs are met by the School. In addition, student teams are given a cash Production Budget. NFTS students are engaged in more productions as part of the curriculum than any of our competitors.

The programme is designed to prepare students for a future as label owners, publishers, managers, promoters, new technology pioneers and creative business specialists. In addition to the UWTSD London Campus facilities and resources, Tileyard Studios provides students with direct access to more than 1000 creative industry entrepreneurs, while developing cutting edge thinking and insight into the management and growth of independent record labels, music publishing, artist management, promotion, marketing and new technology entrepreneurship.

The course provides a critical understanding of music and entertainment management and organisations in a global context both on and offline. The core of the programme focuses on digital and independent entrepreneurial skillsets and practice as well as more traditional business methods within the context of the new mixed media economy. The course consist of six taught modules in Part I and an industry-related major business project in Part II.

Alongside specialised modules in Creative Music Management, Marketing, Live Event Management and New Media Technology, MA Music Industry Entrepreneurship students will develop a major business plan project for presentation to a panel of seed and incubation investors and business angels, curated by Tileyard Studios, seeking to invest in new creative business opportunities and IP.

Students will have access to the new Tileyard Education Centre featuring a professional recording studio, audio-visual tech lab and writing production rooms where they can collaborate with other creative MA students such as Commercial Songwriting and Production.

This two-semester Arts and Entertainment Journalism program is perfect for you if you have a passion for music, theatre, film, television, dance or culture. In your courses, you learn to write snappy, relevant and market-driven stories for multiple platforms as well as the social science aspect of pop culture in a Canadian and global context. Within a rapidly changing domestic and international environment, the work of Stage Managers is becoming more complex and technically challenging. The entertainment and live events industries are growing rapidly and the need for skilled Stage Managers has never been greater. The evolving range and scope of where, and how, live entertainment is delivered leads to often difficult and sometimes contradictory demands and challenges for the Stage Management team. This leads to a situation where there is a need for graduates with more holistic and integrated perspectives regarding the management of entertainment and live events and the artistic, economic, social and environmental conditions in which they function. This course has been developed in response to this need and is rooted in a belief that effective Stage Managers need training that is both practical and critically reflective, the course will develop your knowledge of the contemporary issues affecting the management of entertainment and live events while equipping you with the practical skills that are essential for developing a career in the field. The course is run in partnership with The Edinburgh Stage Management School which specialises in post-graduate vocational training and combines a well established industry focus with successful graduate employment. The MA course combines the best aspects of the vocational, practical and academic models.

This MA is designed as a conversion degree and we welcome applicants from non-arts related subjects. It is suitable for both graduates who wish to add a vocational Stage Management emphasis to their first degree and those with equivalent professional qualifications or experience. It is likely to be of interest to those who studied the arts and humanities at undergraduate level or those with significant workplace experience who would like to gain a formal qualification.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Teaching comprises a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, simulation exercises, and projects. You will undertake professional practice working with QMU shows and events as well as engaging with the wider industry. Your performance on the course will be assessed by essays, reports, reflective blog, portfolio, presentations and a dissertation or project (MA only). Normally, there are around six to eight students undertaking the course each year.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Most modules consist of five or six hours of class time each day during the teaching periods of the semester. Where possible, all teaching takes place over three days per week.

Our partnership with The Edinburgh Stage Management School ensures an active industry focus to the course with key professional practitioners delivering master classes and practical workshops. Our location in the festival city also allows for strong practical links between the course and the many arts, festival and cultural organisations based in and around Edinburgh, across Scotland and the UK.

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course commences in January each year. This intensely practical and pioneering course aims to prepare students for a successful future in multi-camera studio entertainment production. Students are taught by NFTS staff and visiting Industry Professionals and have hands-on experience of a variety of studio roles as well as in their specialisation.

Students will apply for, and be accepted onto the course in one of three craft specialisations:

I. Cameras and Lighting
Practise the core skills of TV studio camera operators, positioning the camera, framing and focus. Learn to use broadcast cameras in a multi-camera studio, repositioning and changing shot as the director demands while the vision mixer cuts and mixes the show. Learn to develop shots, moving with artists or in sympathy with music to create dynamic and exciting television. Begin to light simple interviews and more complex multi-camera lighting techniques. You’ll need a passion for pictures, quick reactions, clear and proactive thinking with excellent co-ordination and a good sense of musical rhythm.

II. Vision Mixing
Train on sophisticated broadcast vision mixing consoles, build and realise complex live visual effects to the director’s brief. Using these high-end production tools, Vision Mixing is like editing - but in real time! Cut, mix and wipe between cameras, pre-edited clips and other video sources live. Learn how to mix a variety of genres from situation comedy to fast paced entertainment and music shows adding digital effects and captioning in real time. You’ll need to be logical, quick thinking, calm under pressure and have an excellent feel for timing and rhythm, both dramatic and musical.

III. Sound (in a broadcast studio environment)
Sound carries the story, sets the mood and the tempo. It provides the enabling structure against which TV pictures can shine. Good sound is essential to a TV programme. Learn how to choose and place microphones for the best results for a variety of shows including live music. Train to use ‘Fisher booms’ - in great demand for sitcoms and soaps - to pick up drama dialogue. Mix studio sound in real time using sophisticated broadcast desks. Enhance the show with spot effects, music cues and audio processing to create atmosphere and energy. Learn how to manage TV comms including studio talkback systems allowing key production team members to communicate and collaborate effectively. You’ll need to be a quick, logical thinker, have a ‘good ear’ and a passion for high quality sound.

These are the core disciplines of multi camera studio operations and people trained at a high level in these craft areas are hotly in demand.

Students will be exposed to the creative challenge of working across a range of entertainment programming, including: Situation Comedy, Magazine Shows, Talent Shows, Panel Shows, Game Shows etc.

The award focuses on developing students’ specific capabilities, in the following areas:
-The language of entertainment television so that they can work effectively within production teams
-A high level technical understanding of their chosen specialist area
-A critical awareness of the production workflow and the impact of multiplatform on production

The six week internship at Sky is constituted of two distinct elements. Firstly the student will shadow a Sky Production Services member of staff working in their specialisation (Vision Mixer, Sound, Camera/Lighting). This will cement the students understanding of the wide range of professional practices and competencies associated with each role. Secondly, students will undertake a range of simulated exercises (designed by the NFTS with Sky involvement) to hone their craft and understanding on the Sky equipment.

At the end of the course, students will be well placed to work professionally in their chosen job role within broadcast production. They will also have a thorough understanding of the television production process encompassing everything from the creative to the technical and the business aspects.

The MISP is a full-time intensive course, with a maximum enrollment of 42 students. The diploma, issued by Università Cattolica, is recognized as a first level Master’s degree by the Italian Government.

Final project

Three months before the end of theoretical classes, the students will have to choose between one of the following careers: screenwriting or production. The students, who choose the screenwriting career, will have to write and deliver a final project from which the writing abilities developed during the program should emerge. Typically,the final project takes the form of a script for a feature film, which can either be an original idea or an adaptation.

The final project can be written in English, Italian, French or Spanish. The students, who choose the production career, will have the opportunity to undertake an internship within an established production or distribution company, a TV network, an advertising agency or on a film set.

The MISP aims at providing its stu- dents with the adequate knowledge, wide-ranging skills and contacts to meet the requests of an increasingly global and varied audiovisual industry.

In previous years, alumni from MISP (which, until 2015, was taught in Italian: Master in Scrittura e produzione per la fiction e il cinema) have been working as writers and producers for top rating TV series and highly successful feature films, or as writers of best selling novels, published in many countries; many of them have been working in high-ranking audiovisual companies such as Cattleya, Disney, Endemol, Focus Features, Freman- tle, Lux Vide, Mediaset, RAI, SKY, among others. This new, tailor-made course is delivered in partnership with the BBC and is designed to thoroughly train participants in becoming a key member of a drama or entertainment production team.

Participants will learn from practical hands-on workshops and through on set and in studio experience on a range of drama and entertainment projects. This will ensure that participants leave the course with the practical experience for starting out in the professional world.

The Script Supervisor’s role is an exciting, varied and demanding job requiring many skills for being part of the production team, working closely with directors and producers, interacting with performers and programme participants, and providing accurate information on location, in the studio gallery and for the edit suite.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Script Supervisor is a key member of the production team, preparing and providing scripts, running orders, camera cards and information, prior to a rehearsal, recording or shooting day. In the studio, they keep the production team informed through cueing, timings, shotcalling, liaising with presentation, and maintaining an accurate log. They support the director and producer and are responsible for getting live transmission programmes on and off air. On single camera shoots, they are vital for continuity, keeping track of takes, timings, shooting angles, costume and make-up notes and props information essential for the editor.

To do this role, you will need to:
-Be calm and level-headed
-Work well as part of a fast-moving team
-Have exceptional organisational and time-management skills
-Be able to work to a deadline

CURRICULUM

This course has been developed due to industry demand and combines practical experience on film shoots with NFTS student directors on fiction films, and in the studio with NFTS Television Entertainment student directors on their entertainment shows, using the recently refurbished 4k multi-camera television studio gallery. There is time for learning to use script packages such as Adobe Story and BBC Scriptwriter, lectures on all aspects of the job involving different genres of programmes, guest speakers and site visits to other television companies and media providers.

The course is three months, based at the NFTS and divided into three sections:

Weeks 1 - 4 Full-time lectures & practical exercises covering studio and film work.

Weeks 5 - 8 On location continuity experience working on two films each

Weeks 9 - 12 Practical experience for studio-based programmes plus additional lectures and site visits.

Specifically students will learn about:

The Computing (games and entertainment) Pathway of the MA in Creative & Cultural Entrepreneurship allows you to build on a historical and theoretical understanding of cultural and creative industries and the development of a cultural economy to create your own creative initiatives, which might be research-based, policy-based, practice-based, or a combination of any or all of these.

The MA will be taught in partnership by a number of departments within Goldsmiths and with key individuals and organisations in the creative and cultural industries sector.
