Enterprise Risk and Modelling

You will gain an understanding of the theory involved in contemporary risk management processes and practices; providing you with an understanding of the building techniques required to assemble a risk analysis model.

Global Perspectives on Risk

You will learn how to critically analyse a wide range of risks, including managerial, cultural, political, ethical and economic factors impacting on international businesses. You will also evaluate a range of risk management strategies and tactics available to international businesses.

The MSc in Quantitative Financial Risk Management (QFRM) develops the mathematical skills needed to make sound risk management decisions in the ever-changing financial markets. Graduates with such skills are highly desirable to employers who, typically, have developed their "rocket-science" based pricing systems and now want to focus on managing the risks of using them.

The QFRM MSc is mathematical, and a good degree in mathematics, or a mathematically based subject, is a pre-requisite. Practical, the emphasis is on the use of mathematics rather than the theory.

Heriot-Watt boasts a leading international research group in financial and actuarial mathematics. Lectures will be given by highly experienced staff at our campus which is set in pleasant grounds in Edinburgh, Scotland's vibrant capital city.

There are strong links between the QFRM MSc and Edinburgh's significant investment industry, with one of the modules actually being taught by industry personnel. Competency in project management has become a key part of the skills-set of every construction professional and executive, with many construction project managers functioning in a strategic and co-ordinating role in the delivery of the client’s physical development and investment programme.

Society continues to value and shape the built environment resulting in both public and private investment in construction assets and the successful completion of construction projects. As these projects become more socially and technically complex in a changing world dominated by a concern for sustainability, there has been a growing challenge to develop existing and new skills and expertise in construction project management. This challenge is not only national but global as the need for construction project management skills continues to grow internationally. Indeed, our student cohorts reflect this global challenge with students from across multiple continents.

We have been running programmes in MSc Construction Project Management for nearly 20 years. This arose from the need to extend the managerial remit to those activities that fall outside the construction phase to include areas such as financing, design and hand-over. The programme is therefore tailored for construction professionals looking for a more holistic perspective of construction project processes and the challenge of project management in complex building and infrastructure projects.

- ICT for Construction Projects
This module introduces managers to a wide range of tools and technologies appropriate for their role and projects. The module covers a range of topics including project information flows, e-business, database technologies, emerging technologies, building information modelling technologies, groupware and collaborative systems.

- Research and Communication
The aims of this module are to provide the student with an overview of sources of information in construction; to explain to students how to conduct a literature review and introduce students to the principal methods of investigation in construction research; and provide an opportunity for each student to develop professional and academic skills in oral and written communication.

- Principles of Design and Construction
This module teaches students the fundamental principles of managing a project during the design and construction phases. The module develops knowledge and understanding of the role and principles of the estimating, tendering and planning of construction projects and the importance of health and safety in relation to design and construction activities.

- Principles of Project Management
Students will gain an understanding of construction project management principles and theory. This module introduces various Design Management techniques and approaches. - Procurement and Contract Procedure
This module aims to develop students understanding of procurement methods, different forms of contract and contract practice. The module is designed to give students key practical skills including advising clients on appropriate procurement and tendering methods; selecting the most appropriate form of construction contract; and manage a construction contract effectively.

- Business Economics and Finance
Students will gain a sound understanding of macro, meso and micro economics and types, sources and management of finance relating to construction organisations and projects. This will allow students to analyse the policies and operations of construction organisations and projects from an economic perspective to determine likely performance consequences and analyse corporate financial data for investment prospects and business management decisions.

- Federated 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM)
The creation, deployment and use of aggregated and integrated models are key goals of collaboration through BIM. This module aims to deliver hands-on practical skills on the use of BIM technologies (i.e. design software and collaboration tools) for real-time co-creation and data sharing of federated/aggregated 3D BIM models. The concept of shared situational awareness within design teams/processes will be explored.

Previous students have gone on to work for a variety of organisations nationally and internationally. These include Arup, Atkins, BAM Nuttall Ltd, Balfour Beatty, Kier Group, Morgan Sindall, Skanska and Transport for London. Many of these organisations engage with the University in both collaborative research and in delivering lectures on the courses. Scholarships and bursaries

The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a county outside the European Union. Who is it for?

This postgraduate Project Management, Finance and Risk programme is for those pursuing or planning a career in managing the introduction of capital goods or applying the latest project management techniques to complex projects. It is particularly suited to students with a scientific or financial engineering background as we cover quantitative risk assessment in depth, which requires an aptitude for measuring and analysing data.

Objectives

Consider the risks contained within a project such as the Euro Tunnel. Two governments sponsoring the project and nine billion pounds of finance ring-fenced through a special purpose company to complete it. Will it be finished on time and will it secure the revenues to service the debt? These are the kinds of questions we address on this programme.

MSc Project Management, Finance and Risk gives you a foundation in quantitative risk assessment and decision-making under uncertain conditions, coupled with classical engineering economics and financial engineering.

From analysing indecision within games theory to rebuilding a country’s infrastructure, we explore the drivers in which businesses operate, and the challenges and opportunities that project managers face. Teaching is provided  by internal and external lecturers with expertise in the field. This is complemented by invited lectures from the Sir John Cass Business School, together with people from industry and the banking sector who bring in diverse skill sets and the ability to solve complex problems.

Placements

There is no formal requirement to do an industry-based placement as part of the programme. However, some students arrange to undertake their final project within a company.

Teaching and learning

As well as lectures, you learn through tutorial support, guided private study, coordinating group activities, and coursework. Not every module has an exam and in some cases you will be assessed through a module project.

Full-time students complete the programme in one year and we expect you to devote a significant part of the non-taught hours to project work, group activities, as well as your own independent study. The duration of a part-time programme is two years (this may be extended to three years in individual cases.

Modules

There are four core modules and two electives. Out of the two electives you can choose from four or five topics including games theory, perspectives on management and leadership and entrepreneurship, innovations and enterprise.

You can also take part in a rolling programme of one-day events to build your communication and team-building skills while you study. These sessions cover topics including conducting research, improving your presentation skills and dealing with people.

The course is modular and each module lasts four days. The structure has been designed in this way so that both full and part-time students can follow the programme. In addition, the course offers practical skills in management, leadership, entrepreneurship, software and communications tools.

You are normally required to complete all the taught modules successfully before progressing to the dissertation.

A Prince 2 Project Management Practitioner’s Course will be offered to students in the summer term. This five-day course, paid for by the institution, is presented by an outside training agency. By successfully completing the course you will be awarded a coveted practitioner’s certificate.

Knowledge and skills related to derivative securities would allow you to pursue many goals, which cannot be achieved only through the study of traditional securities, in investments, risk management, and management of corporations. In other words, you will extend your
knowledge of corporate finance, investments, and portfolio management into the advanced stage. This course requires basic knowledge of traditional securities such as stocks and bonds, and corporate finance, although there is no specific prerequisite course. Additionally, the derivatives market aims to provide the basic knowledge and skill in order to understand Debt Security Market (FIN4300) and Risk Management (FIN4200). Securitization, which will be taught 2 in Debt Security Market, is a sophisticated type of derivatives. Also derivatives are widely used in order to achieve both financial and enterprise risk management. Understanding the pricing of derivatives also helps to understand the insurance pricing.
Delivery methods:
Course materials consist of cases, book chapters, and various articles, exercise problem sets and homework assignments, and a final examination at the end of the term. The final is a take-home examination. Most course work is quantitative. The level of students understanding will be checked by means of case analysis, assignments, and scheduled presentations throughout the term. Full preparation and attendance are both required for all of the scheduled sessions in this course. In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to find and secure a suitable position but ultimately we are in the hands of the employers who are free to decide who they take into their organisation.

Research

What you will study

The MSc in Financial Management would equip students with the knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of financial management, which are relevant to business organisations.

The focus of the programme is to promote a critical understanding of how capital markets operate, how companies are valued, how markets shape the financial manager’s operating context, and how companies can protect themselves against risk and uncertainty.

Learning and assessment

Teaching involves a combination of formal lectures, group discussions, seminars and directed reading.

The programme integrates applied and theoretical knowledge with assessment processes that test both knowledge of the disciplines plus their application and limitations.

Each module represents approximately 100 hours' study time of which typically 24 hours is contact time with the module tutor(s) and the remaining 76 hours is made up of pre-reading, directed reading, preparatory work and assessment.

Methods of assessment are varied and linked to learning requirements. They may include open and closed book examination, essays, coursework assignments and case studies.

Facilities

The Bradford Trading Room enables our students to gain experience in real life financial and economic markets using software such as Bloomberg Professional.

Bloomberg Professional is an industry standard market information software package that is used by a majority of organisations engaged in finance, banking and macroeconomic analysis. It offers a feature rich environment with a wide range of data classes, giving access to data used in decision making in areas such as macroeconomic policy making and central banking, portfolio management, equities, insurance, and risk analysis.

Career prospects

On completion of this qualification, you may go on to work in an economics, finance policy or management capacity in government, the private sector, in development agencies (e.g. regional or national development banks) or in the third sector in a capacity relating to economics and finance (e.g. microfinance or enterprise support and development).

Study abroad

As part of our exchange agreement with Toulouse Business School (France), students have the opportunity to study a module in ‘Financial Risk Management in European Banking’ in Toulouse each year.

This is a very popular option, allowing participants to broaden their knowledge and experience a different business culture.

It is an industry that will continue to grow and evolve in the foreseeable future.A career in energy will involve tackling important issues such as climate change and improving sustainability as well as developing new sources of fuel.

Energy Audit and Energy Asset Management

This module focuses on techniques for auditing and managing the amount of energy used in a range of industrial processes. The module will provide an understanding of the strategies and procedures of energy audit and energy asset management. Using case studies throughout, the module will present energy audit, managing energy usage, factors affecting energy efficiency on plant, and cost benefit analysis of introducing alternative strategies and technologies. It will also address the efficient use of other commodities, for example water consumption.

Renewable Energy Technologies

Renewable energy is regarded as an integral part of a sustainable development strategy. This module concentrates on the renewable energy technologies most likely to succeed in the UK and other temperate countries, i.e. solar energy, energy from waste, wind, hydro and biomass. Topics for discussion include: the scale and variability of resources; technologies for exploitation; technical and economic feasibilities; integrated (hybrid) systems. Software tools will be explored for design and analysis of renewable energy systems.

Construction Management  

Developed with the support of the CITB Construction Industry Training Board, the programme is designed to meet the increasing demand for innovative and far-sighted construction managers.

It offers a choice of modules covering the wide variety of skills that modern construction professionals need. This comes from a growing drive to find sustainable and environmentally sound construction methods and innovative management practices to replace traditional procurement routes and management methods.

Strategic Management in Construction and Property Enterprise

The module develops insight into the strategic decision-making processes necessary for organisations to establish and meet organisational goals. It also examines the types of strategies and how they may be successfully utilised. Contemporary analytical techniques are reviewed and evaluated. Factors which influence Corporate Strategy are considered and contextualised in relation to the construction and property industry and constituent enterprises.

Oil and Gas 

The oil and gas industries are widely affected by a growing range of factors, including shifting global economics, an evolving global energy mix and environmental issues. There is an increasing demand for those working in the industries to develop an intelligent awareness of this complex business environment and to grasp the ways in which these changes will affect organisations.

The professional project manager must deliver projects on schedule, on budget, to scope and with the right quality. This MSc develops the multi-faceted skill set needed to successfully manage international projects in the oil and gas industry.

The Oil and Gas Industry

This module introduces the student to the fundamental principles and activities within the global oil and gas industry. This includes legal ownership of hydrocarbon reserves, strategic investments, and the processes involved in upstream and downstream activities within the oil and gas industry. Aspects of health and safety standards will also be introduced in the module.

Oil and Gas Contracts and Disputes

This module will provide the student with an understanding of procurement and contract administration in a modern international oil & gas environment based on the main contracts. The module will examine the various methods of resolving disputes arising under contracts at law, through statutory legislation and by agreement: Litigation; Arbitration; Adjudication; ADR including Conciliation, Mediation, Negotiation, Comparison of cross border/international methods of dispute resolution particularly in relation to arbitration and adjudication.
