This course is designed for computer science, informatics and IT professionals who want to pursue a career in which advanced research skills may be useful. It is most suitable for experienced or emerging professionals and is ideal if you wish to advance your knowledge of business performance and how it is supported by information technology.

What you study

The course is structured to give you advanced level research skills specifically relevant to the IT discipline, together with a framework for developing your knowledge of how organisations seek to use IT for transformation and innovation.

On the course you examine the relationships between corporate strategy, business models, services and process models, performance, risk and value management, and computer technology. You discover how enterprise systems can be integrated with strategic and tactical business decision-making as well as data analytics and processing. You also learn about emergent technologies such as smart applications driven by artificial intelligence and robotic process automation.

Throughout your work, questions will emerge and you will be able to identify topics to research based on what you have studied. You take three modules that reflect your area of specialism or that provide you with important background knowledge. You also learn about research techniques from which you conduct your preliminary research study and dissertation.

Throughout the course you benefit from a strong underpinning focus on computer science and informatics.

The course has been designed in consultation with LEADing Practice, an Enterprise Standards body whose models are integrated into enterprise software products of SAP™, IBM™, iGrafx™ and LEADing Practice’s Enterprise+. This professional, vendor-neutral standards body brings to bear its invaluable experience to the course, having worked with over 4,600 industry practitioners.

In addition, you are taught by leading research-active academics and industrial practitioners. Eminent contributors and guest speakers enhance your learning by exposing you to theoretical knowledge and real-world case studies. This may include industry professionals such as the founder of Enterprise Architecture, John A. Zachman. Further support comes from the Global University Alliance (GUA), a consortium with more than 450 academic institutions in its membership. Both LEADing Practice and the GUA work with other standards bodies such as the OMG, ISO, IEEE, CEN, and W3C. All this knowledge is uniquely brought together in this course to provide you with industry expertise and connections.

As a result the course helps to raise your professional profile with your existing or prospective employer and enables you to pursue a career where advanced research skills are may be useful, including those appropriate for doctoral study.

Course structure

The course is designed as study blocks so that you attend for two weeks in October then two weeks in January in the academic year. The remaining time you engage in pre-reading, and work on your assessments including a preliminary research study and your research dissertation.

What kind of life will it be for the seven billion people who will live in existing or developing cities? Cities hold tremendous potential, but at the same time are sources of stress, inequalities and pollution. We're working to improve cities to better support fulfilling and diverse lifestyles.

Urban design has an important role in determining both the current and future form of cities. The responsibility for the development and management of cities is becoming increasingly shared.

This course is designed for practitioners and students to enhance their understanding of the city as a complex and dynamic system.

While your focus will be on physical planning and the design of urban spaces and buildings, the various influencing factors that affect form will also be considered.

The major topic is the European metropolis, or city region, within the context of globalisation. You’ll learn to develop appropriate strategies for sustainable urban development. This will encompass social, political, economic, environmental, architectural, aesthetic and psychological aspects.

You’ll study

Your course is delivered through studio work, lectures, seminars and a research project.

The studio involves work on the design of a complex urban area. This includes the levels of the entire city, the neighbourhood and the individual public space defined by urban architecture.

The course is strongly linked to the Urban Design Studies Unit's research agenda. All that is taught in both classes and studio is based on our excellent research record and helps advance it.

The department is in a partnership board with the department of Urban Studies at Glasgow University. Its renowned teachers and researchers contribute a real estate and policy and practice overview to the course.

There are two fully-networked design studios; one dedicated to student self-study, the other to interactive design teaching.

In addition to the main University library, we have our own, on-site, reference library. Our collection is developed in direct response to the teaching delivered in the department.

We offer plotter printing, scanning and laser cutting services.

Learning & teaching

Courses are taught through lectures, seminars and studio work as well as a piece of research (MSc students only).

Lectures and seminars are delivered through a variety of modes including short intensive sessions to allow for flexible booking by CPD and part-time students. There's also occasional site visits.

The taught element of the course starts from a solid grounding in urban design history and theory. It then concentrates on current urban challenges, from climate change to the pressures for development in both developed and developing countries. It culminates with the research work carried out in the Urban Design Studies Unit and teaches you the unit’s ethos and approach to urbanism.

- Guest lectures
We regularly organise a guest lecture series linked to the taught and design element of the course. The Urban Design Studies Unit also organise specialist events. In the coming session students of the course will be involved in a week-long seminar/event with the famous advocate-urbanist and writer Chuck Wolfe.

Assessment

Assessment criteria are linked to the learning outcomes set for each individual class and these are published in the modules descriptors which are available to students. The criteria is also explained by staff at the start of each class, to make sure that you're comfortable and clear with what is expected of you.

The assessment of studio work is developed collaboratively between staff and students. Learning outcomes are linked to criteria and performances. This increases your sense of ownership of the learning process and is integral to the course.

On successful completion of studio and classes you’ll be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma. If you complete an additional research element you’ll receive an MSc in Urban Design.

As part of the process of becoming a professionally-qualified Architect in the UK, graduates are required to complete a period of supervised ‘practical training', 12 months of which (commonly referred-to as the ‘Year Out') is normally undertaken before commencing full-time academic study at Master's level. This period of practical training constitutes Year 1 of the University of Huddersfield M.Arch course.

Therefore, students who have not previously completed a satisfactory period of practical training should join the course in Year 1. Students who have already completed a satisfactory period of practical training should join the course in Year 2.

Years 2 and Year 3 of the course are design-centred and intended to enable you to explore issues of critical regionalism and tectonic expression in relation to establishing your own theoretical position, through which you will be expected to develop a high degree of sensitivity to the context within which design work is undertaken in geographical, cultural, social and technical terms.

All design projects explore applications of sustainability and encourage a wide and plural outlook appropriate for both developed and developing countries. In this global worldview, understanding of progressive theories of design and the application of advanced construction methods co-exist with concern for the implementation of sustainable technologies, awareness of regional development issues and respect for craft-based building practices.

The rationale and definition of ‘International' both builds upon the studies undertaken as part of the Architecture (International) BA(Hons) degree awarded by the University of Huddersfield and acknowledges the reality of rapidly changing architectural practice in a fast moving, global context. Our course will aim to prepare you for new and emerging forms of practice through the development of your personal learning skills and a deep understanding of the need for flexibility, adaptability, innovation and enterprise in your career.

The Architecture MArch is a two-year full-time Master's degree which, in addition, leads to the award of ARB/RIBA Part 2. The programme has an international reputation and is generally regarded as one of the leading Part 2 programmes in the UK.

About this degree

The MArch unit system of teaching ensures that an open, diverse and critical debate is sustained by the school on what constitutes architecture, and reinforces The Bartlett's ethos that architectural knowledge and expertise is synthesised throughout the student's own projects. Much of the current work by staff and students is at the forefront of developing new intellectual and formal concepts in global architecture discourse.

The programme consists of five core elements. The first year (known as Year Four) comprises three modules, followed by two modules in the final year (known as Year Five).

As an MIT graduate, you could become a software engineer, an enterprise data architect, a mobile systems analyst, or even a chief technology officer.

The MIT caters to students from a variety of backgrounds. If you do not have previous training in IT, the course includes preparatory units that will give you the IT knowledge needed for the remainder of the course. However, if you already have a degree in IT, you can accelerate your study with an exemption from these preparatory units, or perhaps study further elective units in areas of your choice.

The course offers you the opportunity to explore a wide range of areas, such as software engineering, mobile and distributed systems, project management and machine learning.

In your final semester, you may take part in an Industry Experience program, working in a small team with industry mentors to develop entrepreneurial IT solutions. Or you may undertake a minor-thesis research project, investigating cutting-edge problems in IT under the supervision of internationally recognised researchers.

High-achieving students who complete the research component may progress to further research study.

Overview

This course prepares students for work in the information technology industry at the highest levels. It provides students with a previous tertiary qualification in another discipline area with the knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to deal effectively with advanced issues involving the application of information technology.

Students with previous studies in a technical IT area can complete in three semesters (full-time) by applying for credit for foundation units.

Career opportunities

Graduates of the MIT will have the knowledge and skills to solve complex social, economic and technical problems within the context of information technology. Students will develop deep theoretical and practical knowledge in specific areas so that they will have the intellectual and conceptual foundation to play leading roles in the development of the information technology industry.

Course Structure

PART A. Foundations for advanced information technology studies
These studies will provide an orientation to the field of information technology at graduate level. They are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field.

PART B. Core Master's study
These studies draw on best practices within the broad realm of IT application, theory and practice. You will gain an understanding of information technology real world IT problems and gain problem solving skills. Your study will focus on IT project management, software, network and systems areas.

PART C. Advanced practice
The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development. You have two options.

The first option is a research pathway including a thesis. Students wishing to use this Masters course as a pathway to a higher degree by research should take this first option. For students to be able to progress to HDR, this course must have a minimum 12 points of research.

The second option is a program of coursework involving advanced study and an Industry experience studio project.

Students admitted to the course, who have a recognised honours degree in a discipline cognate to information technology, will receive credit for PART C, however, should they wish to complete a 24 point research project as part of the course they should consult with the course coordinator.

It will equip you with the range of highly marketable, hands-on skills required in data modelling, and in designing, managing, monitoring and administering corporate database systems divisions, information centres and webenabled database applications.

The course combines academic study with Oracle certification training, and you will be encouraged to take the associated Oracle exams and become an Oracle Certified Associate. It is suitable for recent graduates who wish to study for a higher qualification and/or gain relevant technical and professional skills in database systems. It's also a strong course for practitioners looking to enhance their professional abilities, develop their careers, and update their technical skills, knowledge and understanding of state-of-the-art and emerging technologies.

Course content

The course addresses new technologies, and advanced theories and techniques, along with their application, implementation and integration with legacy systems. You will analyse new demands and the application of new technologies in the management of data and information resources, and examine emerging technologies shaping the way data is now processed, accessed, retrieved, structured and modelled.

Embedded into the course are these themes that will help you to develop skills in the use and application of specific area in the database discipline. One theme is related to database administration and the ability to deliver and administer web-enabled database solutions. A second theme is related to database application development, and the ability to deliver web-enabled information systems solutions. The third theme focuses on the role of data architect, and the skills and knowledge needed to organise and design data and manage projects in a way that harnesses potential emerging technologies.

Teaching methods include lectures, student-led activity and smaller, instructor-led groups. You are encouraged to gain greater understanding of topics through practical activity and the use of scaled down versions of real life scenarios. The Oracle training materials that we use will prepare you to take the Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) exams. Assessment usually involves a combination of exams and coursework, leading to a product such as a presentation, group investigation, technical solution, a piece of software or a research review. Exams are normally two hour long and take place at the end of the year.

Course Details

This course places an emphasis on the innovative design and construction of new homes, conceptualising prototypes of how we will live in the future and the exciting new materials and building techniques that are becoming available. 

You develop knowledge of housing design and are introduced to the role of CAD, BIM and model making. These are all developed alongside a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the housing provision for health, wellbeing and universal needs creating a learning experience that disrupts and challenges the concept of ‘home’ as we traditionally know it. 

Hosted by the School of Science, Engineering & Design this course has academic input drawn from across the University to consider housing design, materials and technology, the role of the home in health and wellbeing and in society, and methods of effectively managing projects and leading change. You learn about concepts of sustainability, design thinking, design processes and technological innovations and you are challenged to develop new ideas and approaches to the housing and homes for the future. 

This course emphasises group work and collaborative learning, and mixes practical and theoretical experiences. 

George Clarke’s social enterprise, the Ministry of Building, Innovation, Education (MOBIE), is kickstarting a fundamental change to the building industry and our courses have been designed to adhere closely to the modular building concept and advanced home construction principles of MOBIE.
