PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

This degree provides in-depth training for students interested in a career in industry or in research-oriented institutions focused on image and video analysis, and deep learning.

State-of-the-art computer-vision and machine-learning approaches for image and video analysis are covered in the course, as well as low-level image processing methods.

Students also have the chance to substantially expand their programming skills through projects they undertake.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The taught postgraduate degree programmes of the Department of Electronic Engineering are intended both to assist with professional career development within the relevant industry and, for a small number of students, to serve as a precursor to academic research.

Our philosophy is to integrate the acquisition of core engineering and scientific knowledge with the development of key practical skills (where relevant). To fulfil these objectives, the programme aims to:
-Attract well-qualified entrants, with a background in Electronic Engineering, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Computing and Communications, from the UK, Europe and overseas.
-Provide participants with advanced knowledge, practical skills and understanding applicable to the MSc degree
-Develop participants' understanding of the underlying science, engineering, and technology, and enhance their ability to relate this to industrial practice

Technical characteristics of the pathway
This programme in Computer Vision, Robotics and Machine Learning aims to provide a high-quality advanced training in aspects of computer vision for extracting information from image and video content or enhancing its visual quality using machine learning codes.

Computer vision technology uses sophisticated signal processing and data analysis methods to support access to visual information, whether it is for business, security, personal use or entertainment. The core modules cover the fundamentals of how to represent image and video information digitally, including processing, filtering and feature extraction techniques.

An important aspect of the programme is the software implementation of such processes. Students will be able to tailor their learning experience through selection of elective modules to suit their career aspirations.

Key to the programme is cross-linking between core methods and systems for image and video analysis applications. The programme has strong links to current research in the Department of Electronic Engineering’s Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing.

FACILITIES, EQUIPMENT AND SUPPORT

To support your learning, we hold regular MSc group meetings where any aspect of the programme, technical or non-technical, can be discussed in an informal atmosphere. This allows you to raise any problems that you would like to have addressed and encourages peer-based learning and general group discussion.

We provide computing support with any specialised software required during the programme, for example, Matlab. The Faculty’s student common room is also covered by the University’s open-access wireless network, which makes it a very popular location for individual and group work using laptops and mobile devices.

Specialist experimental and research facilities, for computationally demanding projects or those requiring specialist equipment, are provided by the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP).

You’ll study

You'll take the compulsory module Civil Engineering Design Projects. This module gives you the opportunity to work on real projects. You can choose between a renewable energy project or an industrial project. You’ll develop comprehensive and innovative designs that involve structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and water engineering, management, environmental and financial planning.

You'll also take the compulsory module Research Protocols for Science & Engineering which supports the dissertation project. You also have a wide choice of optional modules.

Following successful completion of the taught component, you’ll undertake a dissertation. If you’re on one of the specialist streams you’ll undertake a research project on a topic related to that stream. The dissertation can be linked to the industrial placement and worked on together with the industrial partner.

Accreditation

This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree.

Open Access

Home students can also choose to study through Open Access. This is initially a non-graduating route. You register for one module at a time and have the option to build up credits eventually leading to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc. You can take up to five years to achieve the qualification.

This option is popular with students in employment, who may wish to undertake modules for Continuing Professional Development purposes.

Home students who do not meet the normal MSc entry requirements for this programme are welcome to apply through the Open Access route instead.

Additional requirements

For candidates whose first language is not English, minimum standards of English proficiency are an IELTS score of 6.5. Applicants with slightly lower scores have the opportunity to attend the University's Pre-Sessional English classes to bring them up to the required level. Some exceptions to the above may apply to nationals of UKBA-approved Majority English Speaking countries.

The Design and Manufacturing Engineering MSc develops your knowledge and skills in mechanical engineering as well as materials and manufacturing engineering. You have the opportunity to undertake in-depth studies through your research projects.

This one year course is intended for honours graduates (or an international equivalent) in mechanical or mechanical-related engineering, maths, physics or a related discipline, eg automotive, aeronautical or design.

A two year MSc is also available for non-native speakers of English that includes a Preliminary Year.

Effective communication is an important skill for the modern professional engineer. This course includes sessions to help develop your ability, both through formal guidance sessions dedicated to good practice in report writing, and through oral/poster presentations of project work.

Delivery

The taught component of the course makes use of a combination of lectures, tutorials/labs and seminars. Assessment is by written examination and submitted in-course assignments.

The research project (worth 60 credits) is undertaken throughout the duration of the Masters course. Project work is assessed by dissertation and oral/poster presentations. You will be allocated, and meet regularly with, project supervisors.

The School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering is based in the Stephenson Building. It has both general and specialist laboratories and workshop facilities. These are used for training, course delivery and the manufacture of materials/components needed to support project work.

The Stephenson Building houses one of the largest networked computer clusters on campus (120+ PCs), which supports all of the specialist software introduced and used within the course (eg CAD, stress analysis, fluid dynamics, signal processing packages) in addition to the School’s own cluster (60+ PCs) used for instrumentation and data acquisition laboratories.

Semester 1 (October-January):
The first semester introduces the fundamental principles of new product design and development, advanced design and innovation techniques, and computer aid packages for design.

- Five taught units
- Includes coursework involving laboratory or small project sessions
- Typically each unit consists of 22 hours of lectures, may involve a number of hours of tutorials/exercises and laboratory activity and approximately 70 hours of private study (report writing, laboratory results processing and revision for examinations)

Semester 2 (February-May):
In Semester 2 you will study both technical specialist units and project-based units. You will develop your professional understanding of engineering in a research and design context. You will gain analytical and team working skills to enable you to deal with the open-ended tasks that typically arise in practice in present-day engineering.

- The semester aims to develop your professional understanding of engineering in a business environment and is taught by academic staff with extensive experience in industry
- Group projects in which students work in a multi-disciplinary team to solve a conceptual structural engineering design problem, just as an industrial design team would operate
- Individual project preliminary work and engineering project management units

Summer/Dissertation Period (June-September):
- Individual project leading to MSc dissertation
- Depending on the chosen area of interest, the individual project may involve theoretical and/or experimental activities; for both such activities students can use the department computer suites and well-equipped and newly refurbished laboratories for experimental work. Collaborative working

Semester 1 (October-January):
The first semester of our course allows students to choose from a range of fundamental and more advanced lecture courses covering the analysis methods and modelling techniques that are used in the simulation, design and manufacture of modern vehicles and powertrains.

- Five taught units
- Includes coursework involving laboratory or small project sessions
- Typically each unit consists of 22 hours of lectures, may involve a number of hours of tutorials/exercises and laboratory activity and approximately 70 hours of private study (report writing, laboratory results processing and revision for examinations)

Semester 2 (February-May):
In Semester 2 you will study both technical specialist units and project-based units. You will develop your professional understanding of engineering in a research and design context. You will gain analytical and team working skills to enable you to deal with the open-ended tasks that typically arise in practice in present-day engineering.

- The semester aims to develop your professional understanding of engineering in a business environment and is taught by academic staff with extensive experience in industry
- Group projects in which students work in a multi-disciplinary team to solve a conceptual structural engineering design problem, just as an industrial design team would operate
- Individual project preliminary work and engineering project management units

Summer/Dissertation Period (June-September):
The full time summer project gives students the opportunity to develop their understanding of aspects of the automotive material covered in the first semester, through a detailed study related to the research interests and specialisations of a member of the academic staff. The students will often be working as part of a larger group of researchers including postgraduates, research officers and undergraduates and as such have access to the state of the art automotive test facilities within the department.

- Individual project leading to MSc dissertation
- Depending on the chosen area of interest, the individual project may involve theoretical and/or experimental activities; for both such activities students can use the department computer suites and well-equipped and newly refurbished laboratories for experimental work. About this course:

This course will enable you to apply for Qualified Teacher of Learning and Skills (QTLS) via the Education and Training Foundation (formerly the Institute for Learning). Depending on your preference and prior experience, you can either specialise in English: Literacy, Maths, Engineering* or teaching learners with disabilities.

We will thoroughly prepare you for the practical demands of teaching in the FE & Skills sector within one academic year. The course will also provide you with 60 credits at masters level.

You’ll be based at the University for two days a week, where you’ll be taught in our specialist teacher training facilities. For two days a week, you’ll be on a teaching placement, and you’ll undergo a six-week block placement in February. You will also complete an alternative placement in a different setting which you are expected to have fulfilled before the course starts. This information will be relayed to you on pre-induction.

The University has been running automotive degree courses for almost forty years and is very well-established within the automotive industry. We have some 250 undergraduate and postgraduate students reading automotive engineering so are one of the largest providers of automotive engineering degree courses in the UK. We have excellent facilities in automotive engineering technology including an automotive centre with engine test facilities.

This pioneering programme consists of a number of “specialist” Masters awards with an expectation that students will have studied a STEM related discipline to a Bachelor’s level or equivalent, as opposed to a “traditional” masters philosophy aimed at students from an engineering background. The programme offers options with separate entry routes for candidates transitioning from ‘Near STEM’ and ‘Far STEM’ disciplines:The Far STEM route is for first degrees where statistical analysis was a dominant feature of their analytical studies. Students will spend one to two semesters studying appropriate Level 4/5 modules in the first year then joining the Near STEM cohort (e.g., chemistry or biology). The Near STEM route is for admission of relevant first degree candidates and whose programme would have made extensive use of applied mathematics to design and explain engineering and/or scientific concepts (e.g., physics or maths).

Building services engineers are responsible for the mechanical and electrical systems that contribute to people's comfort, health and productivity. They provide analytic and design skills to buildings of all scales and levels of complexity, from residential and commercial, to industrial and cultural.

With greater efficiency constantly being sought in the use of energy and materials (for environmental and economic reasons) there is a growing demand for a new generation of environmentally responsible buildings. Currently however, the field of architecture and engineering is facing a deficit of people with the right type of expertise. In response, this full time Masters course has been created to provide a route through which STEM graduates (or people with relevant experience) can align their skills with the needs of the profession.

Course detail

The MSc Building Services Engineering is suitable for graduates with degrees in technological subjects (such as mechanical, aeronautical, civil and automotive engineering), or maths or science graduates. Over the course of one year, you will study the following compulsory modules:

• Mechanical Services
• Construction Procurement
• Low Carbon Building Services
• Building Services Design Project
• Building Engineering Research
• Dissertation

Format

Input from industry practitioners as well as other interdisciplinary professionals is a key part of the course. Along with field trips to working sites, this will help you develop an understanding of how to apply the concepts and principles to real world situations and projects.

Through project work, group work, hands-on practice and theory, you will gain the skills needed to make a positive impact on the places where people live, study and work.

Much of the teaching will focus around a studio-based engineering design project under the guidance and critique of your tutor. There will also be traditional teacher-led classroom delivery supported by online materials.

Assessment

We use a range of assessment tools throughout the course, including exams, coursework, presentations, lab reports and portfolio development.

Careers / Further study

A career in building services engineering is likely to be varied, analytical and inventive. This Masters will equip you with the knowledge and experience needed to step into a wide range of roles, including Building Services Consulting Engineer, Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer, Sustainability Engineer and MEP Construction Engineer.

About this course

On this course you gain the knowledge the skills you need to work as an engineer, building on your existing degree in science or technology.

A rewarding career

Engineers apply scientific and technological principles to solve problems in a creative way. It’s a well-paid and rewarding career that is constantly changing with new developments in technology. And with a shortage of mechanical engineers in the UK, your skills will be in demand.

What you study

You can follow your interests to create the right programme of study for you. Initially, you take two modules in engineering principles. Then, with guidance from your course leader, you select from a range of technical modules covering a broad range of topics in mechanical design and analysis.

In addition to your technical modules, you also take an engineering management subject and participate in a multidisciplinary product development project with MSc students from a range of engineering specialisms. You develop an understanding of how engineering projects work and how they relate to the commercial world, as well as becoming part of our engineering community and learning to think like an engineer.

One third of your study will be an individual project and dissertation. You specialise in a technical area of your interest and choosing and carry out your own in-depth investigation into a particular problem. Where possible, this will be an industry-related problem.

Many of our academic staff are actively involved in research. Examples of recent projects include:
-Developing materials to improve insulation and temperature control in pipelines and refineries.
-Developing ultra-light solar and electric powered vehicles.
